Authors Notes:
Hey guys so far I am loving these reviews *screams of excitement*. I am so glad you guys are loving it so far and I really hope that you guys continue to enjoy it. Here's some info about me so that makes me, well… me. I am from a small town in Ontario, Canada. I love theatre, music, and obviously Harry Potter. I am an amateur writer and I just noticed that I really love these Time Turner fics and wanted to put my own spin on it, while using inspiration from amazing fics like Debt of Time. I also really loved the idea of putting music in it. So that's just a bit about me and I wanted to quickly respond to some reviews.
Beetlejuicee: It's actually not Mia like Mya but it's Mia like Me-Uh. I named her this because of Euphemia (even though they didn't know each other yet) and honestly because I've always thought Mia would be a good nickname for Hermione other than Mya. Thank you for the comment. It is very appreciated.
Megcoco18: So I totally get it, it has been done before but after the Holidays the differences between my fic and other fics will really start to show. Alterus Belandio was just something I came up with. I will be using Latin spells in the future but I completely forgot about the Latin elements in spells when writing it. If it bothers people in the future I would be willing to change it but if not it was just an error in judgement.
Gp: Shhhhhh...Spoilers lol :)
Kanishka: Awww thank you so much, this review literally made my day.
CallaRose4ever: I know it swear I won't use it too much, but yes she has elemental powers and I thought Frozen 2 would have good songs for that. Music is a big part so I recommend you all listen to the songs while reading and the songs will get more frequent so if you don't like it now I wouldn't continue… Thank you so much for your review though.
AEdmo13: I started crying when I read your review thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to post that
HoneyDukesCandy: Thank you so much you are so sweet
For everyone asking if this will be a HermionexSirius fic...yes it will be. She will be with other people as well, not just Sirius. But yes eventually Sirius and Mia will get together. I hope that helps everyone sleep at night, but yeah I love Sirius and Hermione even if they weren't the same age at this time. It's not that bad if you think about it, look at Remus and Tonks. A big age difference, but Tonks is not that much older than Hermione. If you haven't also read Remus and Hermione fics, those are pretty great as well.
As much as I wish I did, I own nothing but the story line.
***TW: Trauma, Panic Attacks***
Before I start, my Beta and best friend Rhi, is having brain surgery today and we stayed up all night trying to finish this so I could ask you guys if you could please keep her in your thoughts today. She is my editor and the most amazing best friend I could ask for. Su while you are reading this please keep her in your thoughts and understand if we missed some spelling and grammar mistakes. Anyways, it may be awhile before I can get another chapter out because I don't want to put too much stress on her while she's recovering. We love you guys so much and hope you enjoy!
September 8th, 1991
Mia woke up with excitement and nerves flowing through her. Her first quidditch practice was today! Sure, she had practiced with James and her dad many times before, but this was her first real quidditch experience. She quickly got dressed for her classes and prepared for the day. Remus had gotten out of the hospital wing the night before, and he could tell she was nervous.
"You know, I don't need heightened senses to tell you're nervous." He joked, putting an arm around her shoulders as they headed to the Great Hall where they were meeting James, Sirius, and Peter for breakfast. "From what I heard you can fly very well, and you have the accuracy needed to catch the snitch. Besides, we will be at practice to watch you, and we'll be with you every step of the way." He said, giving her hand a squeeze before stepping into the Great Hall.
"Still doesn't make it any easier. I mean, I will literally be the youngest seeker in a century. All the pressure is on me. If I fail, everyone will know." She said, squeezing his hand a little tighter and giving him a small frown.
They entered the Great Hall and started walking towards the Gryffindor table. "Mia!" James yelled, waving her over with a stupid grin on his face. Remus and Mia walked over, and she sat beside him, giving him a hug.
"You nervous?" James asked.
"Terrifed, but I'll get through it. You'll be there to watch, right?" Mia asked, smiling at her brother.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world. Remus and Sirius will be there too, maybe even Peter." James promised his sister.
"Even if I suck? You won't leave right? Pretend that I don't exist? Pretend I-"
"Mia! Godric! You need to realize how much of an insanely talented quidditch player you are!" Sirius told her, giving her a look saying 'listen to me i'm right!'. "You wouldn't be the youngest seeker in a century if you couldn't catch the bloody snitch. Besides, it's only a practice. Gail will make sure you're in shape for the match against Ravenclaw this weekend. Now you got this okay?" Sirius told her, basically demanding that she better get some self confidence really quick or he'd make sure that she'd regret it. Yet somehow it made her feel so much better.
"Thank you Sirius, that was really weird...yet somehow helpful." Mia told him genuinely.
*Line Break*
The rest of her day was pretty normal. DADA was somehow more boring than the day before, and Professor Newcombe told her that "You, Mia, are one of the best pianists I've ever heard. You pick up the material so fast, you'll be playing Mozzart in no time." That comment elevated Mia's confidence in her musical ability 'Maybe I can do this' Mia said with a smile.
Mia changed into her practice robes, grabbed her broom, and walked out towards the pitch. She could see the team starting to stretch, she saw Gail, Fabian and Gideon as well as a few others. She started walking over to the red headed twins but was stopped by Gail's instructions.
"30 laps around the pitch for warm up!" Gail yelled to the team. The team quickly mounted their brooms while Mia scrambled to get on hers. She quickly mounted her broom and noticed James, Sirius, and Remus watching her from the stands, grinning like idiots. She started lapping the rest of the team, passing the twins multiple times.
"Oi! Potter! No need to show off yeah?" She could hear Fabian yell.
"Fab, you're just jealous a first year can out fly you. Nice work Mia!" Gideon yelled with encouragement.
"Oi you idiots. Less talking, more flying. Just for that you'll be doing another 10 laps Prewitts!" Gail yelled at them. "The rest of you dismount and we'll be starting on drills!"
Mia looked at Gail as though he was a different person. 'Guess some people really take quidditch seriously'. They ran drills for the next two hours, going over scenarios. Mia was drenched in sweat by the time practice was over.
"Guess you don't work out too much, eh Potter?" Gail asked. Mia shook her head in response. "You should probably start running"
"Running?" Mia asked in confusion.
"You know… cardio?" Gail said, looking at her as if she was out of it.
"I'll start running with her." Gideon volunteered. Mia looked at him, surprised.
'Why would he help me?' Mia asked herself.
"You will?" Mia asked gratefully.
"Of course what are friends for?" Gideon told her. "We'll start after the next game so you aren't too sore to play?"
"Sounds good to me." Mia said with a smile.
"Great, now we need someone who can make a book of all our plays." Gail announced, looking for a volunteer.
"I"LL DO IT!" Mia heard Sirius yell from across the pitch, starting to run towards them.
"Sirius Black, right?" Gail asked the long raven-haired boy.
"Yes sir, that's me," Sirius said.
"Well I was kinda talking about a player so…" Gail's voice trailed off, and Sirius slumped his shoulders in disappointment.
"I'll help him," Mia told Gail.
"Really? You'll make the plays?" Gail asked her in disbelief. "No offense but you've been playing quidditch for what, all of 2 days? What makes you think you can?"
"I wouldn't be making the plays, Sirius would. He probably knows more about quidditch than you could ever know in a lifetime. What am I doing then, you may ask? I'll be telling him our players' strengths and weaknesses, so he can make plays accordingly. You may think i'm some girl who knows nothing about quidditch and just happens to be fast and able to catch a snitch, but I am so much more than that, got it?" Mia told Gail angrily.
"Woah! Mia, I didn't mean anything like that! I just meant that you haven't been playing that long, and you need to focus on training and school. I just didn't want to overwhelm you." Gail told her apologetically.
"Sure," Mia said, rolling her eyes.
"Mia, I honestly think it was a mistake. I don't think he meant anything by it. Honest." Gideon told her, putting an arm around her shoulder and rubbing her arm to try and calm her down. She felt a blush creep to her face, heating her cheeks at the gesture. Gideon seemed to notice this and smirked at her pink face.
"Fine. Gail, I am sorry. Now can Sirius and I make the playbook or not?" Mia boldly asked, challenging him to say no to her.
"If you think you and Black can do it, go for it. Just make sure it's good." He said, looking her in the eye. "Okay that's it for practice, be ready for our game on Saturday!"
Mia started walking to the change room for a shower when she heard Gideon call her name.
"Mia!"
"Yeah?" Mia asked, remembering his arm around her, and feeling a blush creep up her cheeks again.
"Meet me out by the lake tomorrow at 5:30 for a run, okay? We'll be doing this for a while so get used to it." He said patting her shoulder before heading to the men's change room with his twin. Mia lost her train of thought at his slight touch, before coming back to reality.
"Wait! Isn't that during dinner?" She yelled at him, and he stopped, laughing at her observation.
"5:30 in the morning Potter and not a minute later!" He told her, still laughing slightly. Fabian gave her a pointed look as if it was obvious.
"In the morning?!" She practically shouted in frustration. "Even the dead are still asleep then!" Gideon walked back over to her with a grin on his face.
"Tell you what Potter, it is an hour and a half of running, then you need to shower, get dressed, and get to breakfast. So if you want to do it later we can, you'll just miss your first class and most of your second. Now McGonagall loves me and wouldn't mind me being late, but I doubt Pearson would be very forgiving." Gideon informed her. Professor Pearson was hard enough and she didn't need to get on his bad side.
"Nope, nope not a problem. The tree by the lake right?" She said, agreeing immediately to the outrageously early time. "Will I need anything?"
"Just dress warm okay? It gets rather cold that time of day." He told her. "I'll meet you there." He said, jogging away. Mia headed to her own change room to shower before she saw the boys again in the common room.
Mia entered the common room, her hair still wet from the shower, when she was quickly enveloped in her brother's warm arms.
"I am so proud of you, sis. You out flew the Prewitt's. THE PREWITT'S! Their speed is legendary." James told her, still holding her tight in his embrace. He let go, and immediately she was pulled into another hug with Remus and Sirius.
"I knew you could do it," Remus told her warmly.
"You were brilliant! Guess we should get started on that playbook after dinner huh? So then it's ready for Saturday's game." Sirius told her.
"As long as I'm back and in bed early. Gideon wants me to start running with him at 5:30 in the morning!" She told them, finally being released from the boys embrace only to see their shocked faces.
"Wow, Gideon means business," Sirius remarked
"Yeah, no kidding. Anyways let's eat, I am STARVING" Mia told them.
"Okay well I'm done, Mia you ready? We can head to the library and make the plays." Sirius suggested after stuffing his face with an incredible amount of food. Mia nodded, grabbing her bag following Sirius to the library. Mia was excited. She hadn't had the chance to see the Hogwarts library yet and she couldn't wait to see if it was as magical as well...a magical library could be.
"So, why'd you agree to help me?" Sirius asked her, but before she could answer he smirked and said. "Couldn't resist my charms?"
"No, I couldn't stand your whining if Gail had said no. Besides you're my friend, why wouldn't I help you?" She said with a confused smile.
"I just mean, well, you seem closer to Remus and James. Besides, don't you study like crazy?" Sirius asked her.
"I don't study all the time. I do have a life outside of the world of academics. I play quidditch, hang out with Lily, hang out with you boys, I read for fun." She listed off. Sirius still looked unconvinced. They turned a corner and were met with 2 large doors. Sirius grabbed the handle, opening the door, and gave her a slight bow.
"Ladies first," Sirius said with a merciful grin.
Mia stepped inside and could hardly contain her gasp. She looked around and saw what looked like an endless amount of shelves, holding books of all different shapes, colours, and sizes. Books were flying through the air being returned to their proper places on the shelf, 'Magic to keep the book organized? I'll have to ask dad about that to see if we can implement those spells at home' She stood for a moment too long with her mouth agape, and Sirius had to shake her shoulder for her to come back to reality.
"Are you okay? That shock of all the books getting to you? Are you going to faint? Let me know so you don't fall on me." Sirius mocked, dramatically fanning himself before falling to the ground in a fake fainting position.
"Oh make fun all you want! Maybe I'll go tell Gail that I decided not to help you and he can get the twins to make the playbook." She said dramatically, turning on her heel to leave the library.
"Mia, wait! I'm sorry please don't leave, I won't make fun of your book obsession anymore. I promise!" Sirius begged, standing up and following her. Mia stopped just short of the door, and Sirius thought she might leave until he heard her laugh.
"You didn't think I would actually leave, did you?" She asked, trying to calm herself down.
"Well...I-I-uh I mean yeah." He said. Mia could've sworn she saw his cheeks go red with embarrassment. She lightly punched his arm and started walking over to a study table. When he didn't follow she turned around.
"Are you coming?"
Sirius nodded and walked over to the table. The two spent the next 2 hours building up a book of plays and strategies that works with each player. Mia hadn't known her teammates all too long, but you can understand a lot about a player from one practice. Mia let out a yawn and realized that it was almost curfew.
"We should head back, I have to be up early tomorrow," Mia told him. He nodded and helped her pack up her supplies, walking her back up to the common room.
"I had a lot of fun Mia," Sirius said. "The plays we made were pretty good, you guys are going to kill Ravenclaw this weekend."
"I hope so…" Mia said, not feeling all that confident. Sirius seemed to notice this and grabbed her shoulders, turning her body to face him. When she wouldn't meet his eyes he tipped her chin up to meet his eyes.
"Mia you are an amazing quidditch player. You wouldn't be the youngest seeker in a century if you weren't any good, oh yeah, and I've seen you on a broom and catch small objects in the air. You are amazing, you have to learn to understand that okay? Own your awesomeness." Sirius told her.
"Thank you, Sirius, as random and weird as your bits of encouragement are, they always make me feel better," Mia said with a smile. Sirius had a sarcastically sappy grin on his face before he told her:
"I'm always here for you Mia. Always."
The two walked into the common room and Mia got some well-needed rest after putting up silencing charms, preparing for her early morning run with Gideon the following day.
September 9, 1971
Mia awoke with a groan, she was very well aware of the time and was not happy about it. '5:30 am, no one in their right mind is up this early'. She quickly dressed in a light blue hoodie, grey sweatpants, and some trainers. She quietly left her dorm and the common room, heading towards the lake to meet Gideon. It was still dark out but she could see the thick fog building up surrounding the lake. She could see a tall figure leaning against a tree.
"Gid?" She whispered loudly. She could see Gideon turning around, he was dressed in a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and grey trainers.
"Mia? Why are we whispering?" Gideon said in a normal tone
Mia saw a look of amusement flash across his face.
'Why am I whispering?'
"I have no idea." She said with a smile. The two stood together awkwardly before Mia asked. "So what now?"
"Well, now we run. Try to stay at an even pace, and remember to breathe. If you need to take a break then pace it. For example, run for 10 minutes, then you'll walk for 1, then repeat. Got it." They started running side by side awkwardly, after a few minutes Mia started to get bored. Her muscles were burning and she was starting to break a sweat, the cool air soothed the burn of her legs. She stopped for a moment to catch her breath, Gideon continued on until he noticed she was no longer there. He jogged over to her, jogging in place while he talked to her.
"If you're tired you need to walk, it will only make it worse in the long run. You are doing great. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth." He patted her back and she started running once again.
Gideon was very patient with her throughout the run. He would stop to walk with her once she started walking. They talked about quidditch and the plays that she and Sirius made, he told her about his sister Molly and his nephew Bill who had just turned a year old. She told him about her parents and the library at home, and he laughed at her excitement over the books. He told her about Fabian and how close they are.
"I thought I lost him you know? Last year he was hit with a bludger, he fell 20-feet from his broom. Once he hit the ground I thought he was gone, what people don't get is that twins have a connection so...I could feel some of his pain." They had stopped running without even knowing it. She heard his voice break on that last word and she felt it.
"I get it Gid, really I do. I couldn't imagine if anything happened to James." She really couldn't, even if they weren't really twins it didn't matter, it felt like they were.
"You know, I actually forgot you and James are twins. I mean you have the same hair and the same eyes, but you two are completely different." He said with a smile.
"Yeah, when you're me it's hard to forget he's my brother. I mean honestly, the way he brags about my achievements is humiliating." She said recalling the hat stall and when she made the quidditch team. She was suddenly aware of the cool air hitting her, she shivered and wrapped for arms around her to stay warm.
"He's just proud of you," Gideon told her putting an arm around her shoulder to warm her up.
"I get that, but I'm just trying to fit in, being a 15-minute hat stall and the youngest seeker in a century really doesn't help me blend in." She explained. He pulled away from her, grabbing her shoulders, looking down into her eyes. She couldn't look away from him and got lost in his eyes.
"Why would you want to blend in when you were born to stand out? You are a quidditch beast, the smartest person I've ever met, and you are one of the most caring people I have ever met." He said looking deep into her eyes.
"You're just saying that." She turned to walk away but he suddenly caught her arm, turning her back around to face him.
"I swear I'm not Mia, I would never lie to you. You are one of the brightest and most amazing people I have ever met. It is time you understand that I want you to repeat after me." He looked at her determined to get her to understand and see what he saw in her.
"I, Mia Elizabeth May Potter…" Gideon waits for her to repeat him.
"I, Mia Elizabeth May Potter," She repeated
"Am an amazing, intelligent, talented person," he continued
"Am an amazing, intelligent, talented person," She repeated
"Who can do anything they believe," he went on
"Who can do anything they believe," she copied
"And will be one of the best quidditch players Hogwarts has ever seen." He finished
"And will be one of the best quidditch players Hogwarts has ever seen." She repeated. "Is that it?"
"That's it." He was still looking into her eyes, they looked at each other for a long time. They only broke eye contact when Gideon inhaled a sharp breath. "W-We should probably get back to the castle, breakfast will start soon and I'm sure you need to get ready." He was still looking at her. She didn't want to leave but he started leading her back to the castle. He walked her to the entrance of the girl dormitories, giving her a small smile before quickly retreating to his own dormitories. When she walked through the door she saw Lily just waking up.
"Where were you this early?" Lily said with a yawn
"Nowhere. Nowhere at all." Mia said with a smile before heading to the bathroom for a shower.
September 11, 1971
When the day of the game finally came, the team gathered in the Gryffindor tent for a meeting before going onto the pitch. Mia nervously pulled her hair into neat dutch braids as she listened to Wood go over plays she and Sirius had made. Gail had been pretty impressed with the playbook the two had made and agreed to use it for the game to see how well the plays worked. Just as she was pulling an elastic around the end of her second braid, Emily Jones, one of the chasers and the only other girl on the team, came up and sat beside her.
"Excited?" Emily asked her.
"Mostly," Mia replied. "I'm a little nervous though."
"That's okay. Everyone is nervous for their first game" the chaser admitted. " I got on the team in my second year, and I wasn't the best player. But I've had 5 years on the team now, and I have to admit I feel like I've gotten a lot better. You show a lot of promise Mia, you'll be good for the team."
"Were you this nervous during your first game?" Mia asked as her hands started shaking.
"I don't actually remember my first game, I was hit by a bludger, I was in the hospital wing for a week," Emily said with a shrug, before getting up and leaving with the team to warm up.
Mia didn't notice Gideon stay behind as he saw her begin to shake. He carefully moved to stand behind her and hesitantly put his hand on her arm. When she didn't seem to notice, he grimaced and moved his hand over her back, rubbing slow circles across her back and murmuring encouraging words.
"You're okay love, you can get through this. You're going to do great on the pitch"
Mia was hyperventilating. She felt as though oxygen wasn't entering her lungs. As the world blurred around her, she had an endless stream of thoughts running through her head; all the ways she could mess up, get hurt, and disappoint everyone. She could barely hear Gideon's words of encouragement, but they broke through the barrier of her overwhelmed mind. She was starting to resume a normal breathing pattern as James, Sirius, and Remus came into the tent looking for her.
The boys entered the tent, Remus immediately noticing something wrong. He rushed to Mia's side, sharing a look with Gideon before turning back to his best friend. He saw her eyes gain clarity and saw her glance around before her eyes snapped to his, a questioning look within them. He shook his head subtly and nodded his head towards Gideon, a small smile gracing his lips. She looked up and met Gideon's eyes, giving him a weak smile of gratitude before wrapping her arms around Remus and, to his surprise, burying her face in his chest.
"So…. What was that?" James questioned.
"Seriously?! That's all you have to say?" Remus snapped. "Your sister just had a panic attack for Godric's sake!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't-"
"No. You can see her struggling. She was practically choking on her own breath!"
"Remus, calm down. He didn't know" Sirius reasoned.
"That's no excuse! She was obviously suffering, and he just stood there! She's his sister! He should be trying to comfort her!"
"Remus, stop. I'm fine" Mia whispered. "I need to go, the game's about to start."
"Mia, are you sure you should even be playing?" Gideon cut in, concern written on his face, "I've never seen anyone have such a bad episode"
"I'm okay Gideon. Let's go" Mia reassured, walking out of the tent and running onto the pitch, leaving the boys staring after her in shock. She mounted her broom and turned to see Gideon doing the same. They flew 5 laps around the pitch before joining the rest of the team in getting into position.
As the coach blew the whistle and threw the quaffle, Mia readied herself. She leaned forward slightly, arching her back and tensing her muscles. As soon as she was allowed, she zipped up to get a better view of the full pitch. Her eyes flicked across the pitch, and she was momentarily distracted as she heard cheering and saw a sign in the Gryffindor stands. 'GO MIA' was held up by James and Sirius, each having a word as they screamed and cheered for her. Remus was beside them looking embarrassed at his friends making such a scene but smiled at Mia when he saw her look at him. She smiled back and snapped her eyes back to the game before her.
The game was in full swing; Beaters were smacking bludgers back and forth, chasers were battling for the quaffle, and Gail Wood just looked bored at his post by the goals. The score was already 40-0 with Gryffindor in the lead. The Ravenclaw chasers had gotten the quaffle a few times, but never managed to get it past Wood.
Mia noticed a flash of gold swirl around her head before it zipped off towards the ground. Mia directed her broom downwards, picking up speed as she chased the Golden Snitch. The Ravenclaw chaser noticed what she was doing and started to follow her lead in chasing the walnut-sized ball towards the turf. It was a fast-paced race towards the golden prize, and they were getting very close to the ground. Mia noticed and pulled on her broom, stopping herself right before she hit the pitch. The other seeker wasn't as fortunate and hit the field hard. He sat up and shook his head, clearly dizzy but seemed otherwise okay.
Mia glanced around nervously, worried she had lost her tiny target when something hit her in the head. Eyes closed from the hit, she quickly snapped her hand in front of her as a reflex and felt something drop into it. Mia opened her eyes and saw a beautiful golden ball sitting in her palm. She had caught the snitch.
Over the weeks leading up to Halloween, Remus decided to talk with Mia about her panic attacks, which was a hard conversation.
*Flashback to the Day After the Quidditch Match*
They sat down in a back corner of the library where they knew they would have privacy since no one ever came this far into the library. The pair sat down, Remus across from her.
"So how long have you been having panic attacks?" Remus asked her in a serious tone. It took her a moment to answer but Remus didn't seem like he wanted to rush her. He took one of her hands in his own and rubbed slow circles on the palm of her hand.
"I-I honestly don't. I just get up in these situations where I can't stop thinking about failing and letting everyone down, that's usually how they start." She explained, tears threatening to spill down her cheeks.
"Is that what happened when you were in the hospital wing with a burn?" He asked her softly, she tried to answer but couldn't find the words so she simply nodded, a small tear sliding down her cheek. Remus ran his thumb along her face, wiping away the tears. She finally found some courage and continued,
"I-I'm just afraid of failing, I don't want to let anyone down, James especially. All he does is tell people how amazing I am, they look to me, to see if what he says is true. I-I can't mess up or I'll disappoint everyone." She said finally letting out a sob. Remus quickly pulled her into an embrace, rubbing circles in her back.
"You could never disappoint us, Mia. James, Sirius, and I are already proud of you. Sure you had some problems before the game but once you were out on the pitch, there was nothing stopping you. James doesn't mean to put that pressure on you, all he does is talk about how proud he is of you, and how great of a sister you are, it gets annoying actually." He said with a small laugh. "But really Mia, I know it feels like a lot, all that pressure. But the three of us will never expect anything from you other than being who you are." With those words she sobbed into the crook of his neck, feeling supported and better about her panic attacks.
"Will it ever go away?" she sniffled into his neck.
"Honestly Mia, I don't know. What I do know is that it will get better, and if you ever feel a panic attack coming on find me, or Gideon, or Sirius and James. I'll tell them how to get you through it." She finally looked up at him, her eyes puffy and red but Remus didn't care. She gave him a weak smile which he returned.
"Thank you, Remus"
"You don't have to thank me, Mia. I'm here for you, whenever you need, one letter and I'm there. You know that." She knew that now.
Around the end of September was when Sirius and James started tormenting Severus. It was little charms to turn his hair different colours and to make his face blue. But it angered Severus, which in turn meant angering Lily. Not that Lily ever blamed Mia for anything Sirius and James did, but Mia would always hear the complaints about her brother. James was definitely in the wrong but it still hurt to hear one of her best friends speaking ill of her brother.
The quidditch team had two other matches, against Hufflepuff and Slytherin. They easily beat Slytherin, all their good players had graduated last year, making them easy targets. Hufflepuff was a little harder to beat, as their seeker was strong and Mia had a difficult time catching up to them. She had to do a deep dive towards the ground and the Hufflepuff seeker pulled up too early, allowing Mia to catch the snitch.
Her and Gideon continued to run almost every morning. She was getting faster and could keep up with him now. They talked about their lives, quidditch, and just little things about themselves. She learned that he preferred tea to coffee and that he never put sugar in his tea, only honey. She told him that she loves the smell of old books, and can never stand when people "dog-tag" their pages instead of using a bookmark. They had become great friends, but there was something about the way he looked at her like he just got her.
October 31st, 1971
As much as the group were excited for Halloween, it was disappointing to know that they couldn't go to the dance until their third year. James and Sirius decided to sneak Mia up to their dorms to hang out for the night. They decided not to dress up, seeing as they weren't going out, they didn't see a point.
Euphemia and Fleamont sent a lot of chocolate and candy to share with their little group. With the bag of sweets in her hand, James and Sirius quickly snuck her up to the dorms. They'd been working for weeks to try to figure out how to sneak her past the wards and with Remus's help they'd finally been able to do it.
They sat around the room all night playing exploding snap and taking turns trying Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. Even Peter was having fun, over the weeks she hadn't really gotten close to him, but she could really see what the boys liked about him. He was unapologetically funny. Sure he was shy but whenever he saw the opportunity to make a joke he took it. He said he'd been having some trouble with transfiguration so she offered to help him, and she told him to meet her in the library before dinner the next day. Mia returned to her dorms after a great night with the boys, put up her silencing charms, and prepared for another sleepless night.
November 1st, 1971
Mia's day had been pretty normal. She was headed to meet Peter in the library until she saw Sirius and James hexing Severus in the hallway. They were sending multiple stinging jinxes his way, taunting him with that awful nickname. 'Snivellus, honestly, it's a horrible name, besides they couldn't have come up with anything better?' Mia thought, disgusted. She couldn't watch it anymore. She had to do something, but before she could, she saw Fabian and Gideon approach the boys.
"Oi! Enough you two!" Gideon yelled at them
"Seriously do you want to lose house points?" Fabian asked them coldly.
"What would Mia say if she saw you like this?" Gideon asked them seriously. The boys didn't reply.
"I'm all for a little pranking but this is just cruel," Fabian said with a disapproving look.
"Leave him now, or we're gonna report you to McGonagall. I'll also let Mia know, and I'm sure the two of you will have howlers waiting for you in the morning." Gideon threatened. The boys quickly left, glaring at Severus and giving him a look that said 'you got lucky this time, watch your back'.
Mia walked, and as Severus ran to the library, she swiftly followed him. She didn't know why, but she knew she had to help him. She opened the door and saw him running towards the back of the library where she and Remus had been just a few weeks before. She watched him grab a book off the shelf and sit in the corner of the room. She walked up to him, unsure what to say.
"Severus?" Mia said quietly, she saw his eyes bolt up. He slammed his book shut and started to leave. "Please don't leave, I want to apologize."
He stopped, scoffed, and turned to face her.
"Apologize for what exactly?" He asked her impatiently, looking for any excuse to leave.
"For watching, for not doing anything. James may be my brother and Sirius one of my best friends, but what they do to you is wrong. I remember that day on the train when you sat with us, and I remember wanting to be your friend. My brother insulted you because of your house and that wasn't fair. What I'm trying to say is I'm sorry and I hope you can forgive me." He looked at her, confused for a moment before he spoke.
"There's nothing to forgive, I never blamed you. Black and your brother are ignorant, small-minded people. Just because I'm a Slytherin doesn't mean I'm evil. He only thinks that because he saw a group of Slytherins insult Lily. I didn't say anything mostly because it would only make it worse for her. But they don't get that." He explained, she'd never seen this side of Severus. He was so… patient and so shy.
"If it makes you feel better the hat almost put me in Slytherin, the only reason it didn't was because of James. When I told him, he was mad, him and Sirius. I had to lie to them saying it was because I had "Black Blood" that the hat wanted to put me there. But really it's because I'm cunning, ambitious, and I would excel in that house." She confessed. She had never told anyone she lied to James, not even Gid or Remus. He looked at her wide-eyed.
"Really?" He asked in disbelief.
"Really. I want to be friends Severus, you and I aren't that different you know? Lily, you and I could study together, even though we don't need to but I really want to try Severus. Please don't hold my brother's idiocy against me." She asked him. She had been thinking about reaching out to him for a while. Lily always talked about him and how smart he is, how well him and Mia would get along.
"I wouldn't do that. You're nothing like your brother and I-I would like that. Lily and I usually meet here every Thursday so if you want to join us…" He said
"I would love to." She gave him a hug and he immediately stiffened under her embrace, but slowly relaxed into it. She was glad she was able to make up for her brother's mistakes with Severus. The two talked for a few more minutes before Severus left to study in the Slytherin common room. Mia sat in her chair, pulling out her book, waiting for Peter's arrival. Little did she know that a rat had been watching her and Severus, and he was not happy.
