A/N: Had this idea the other night...instead of the Twelve Days of Christmas, it's the Twelve Days of Captain Canary. Basically just a CC oneshot every day for the twelve days leading to Christmas, the final one to be posted on Christmas day along with all my other Christmas-themed oneshots. I can't guarantee anything in this fic, only that I have some ideas...so enjoy! Also, I should have posted this yesterday but I got sidetracked, so you get two today.
Disclaimer: If I owned LoT, Len wouldn't be dead and Captain Canary would have been more than casual flirting and one kiss. So basically no, it's not mine.
Day 1: Legends Never Die
He wakes up at night. Every night.
Sometimes he'll scare himself awake, his nightmares will be so bad. Other times he curls into a ball in a rare display of vulnerability and has to be shaken awake, just to stop the nightmares. Still other times he can't fall asleep at all, or if he does it's in restless fits broken by periodic spells of wakefulness, most of which is spent trying to convince himself that they're just dreams.
Her presence helps. Her presence always helps. It doesn't keep the nightmares away, but most of the time they're less violent if she's with him, which at this point is every night.
The rest of the team knows they disappear into her room together at night and can only guess at what happens behind closed doors. Mick thinks his friend has finally gotten the guts to start sleeping with her; Amaya says no way, they're probably just training or something before going their separate ways. Ray's guess is the closest; he thinks they're together, but not in the way Mick is so content with believing, and that there's some other reason for the two sharing a room.
Sara doesn't know if they're officially "together" or not, but all she cares about is that he's alive and he's hurting. Leonard is little better off; he doesn't know what their relationship is at this point, only that it's definitely more-than-friends.
The nightmares started the moment Leonard was back on the Waverider. First night back he woke up in the room he'd been assigned (Sara had taken his when Amaya had permanently moved into hers), screaming her name. She'd materialized in the doorway a few moments later, having heard his screams, to find Leonard sitting up in his bed with his face hidden in his knees, a position she never thought she'd find him in. Without a word, she had gone over and coaxed him back to her room. He'd slept much easier after that.
This pattern had repeated itself for about a week before Leonard gave up and basically moved into Sara's room. It hadn't changed much in his absence, just a few things of Sara's being added. His nightmares continued, but every time he woke up Sara was there.
Now, Sara watches him sleep, though he's restless and she knows he's dreaming again. It's only a matter of time before he wakes up.
Still, she studies him. Even with whatever nightmare is currently playing through his head, he is much more tame while asleep. Softer, somehow, without the usual rough edges he presents to the team on a daily basis. Sara likes seeing this side of him, the vulnerability that she suspects no one but his sister has ever seen (or at least, seen and lived to tell the tale). She knows he hates that these nightmares are his weakness, but she likes it - it reminds her that he's human like the rest of them.
Leonard wakes with a start, though he's not screaming as he sometimes does. It takes a moment for him to get his bearings; when he does, he realizes that Sara's arms are already around him. He relaxes into her embrace, a casual sign of trust that speaks volumes about how far their relationship has come since he materialized on the Waverider that day with little memory of what happened after the Oculus exploded.
"Same as usual?" Sara murmurs eventually.
Leonard nods, closing his eyes. "A variation at least. One of many."
Sara runs her hand down his side; he's just in a T-shirt and pajama pants, the way he normally is, and it's not even strange anymore for her to see him in anything other than his usual jacket. Leonard, whose eyes had reopened, closes his eyes again at her touch, enjoying it more than he probably should.
"This can't be easy for you," Sara says.
Leonard opens his eyes to raise an eyebrow at her. "You think? Constant nightmares about the Oculus aren't exactly a picnic."
"I know," Sara sighs, "but that's not what I meant."
Leonard meets her eyes, rather easy to do while laying side by side on a bed. "What did you mean?" he asks, genuinely confused.
"I mean...this, letting me see the side of you that you never allow anyone to witness," Sara explains. "It can't be easy for you to let your walls down like that."
If only you knew how many still stand. "It's not easy, but it's not hard either," Leonard says. "Not with you. Anyone else and they'd be dead by morning, but you...putting aside the fact that you could totally kick my ass while we're both asleep, there's just something about you that I trust, more than I trust my own best friend."
They fall silent; neither knows quite what to say now, though both of them have words on the tips of their tongues. It's just a matter of figuring out how to say what needs to be said.
"We're not friends, are we, Leonard?" asks Sara.
Leonard considers this, then replies, "No. We're more than that."
Sara meets his icy eyes with her own softer blue ones. "Then what are we?"
"I don't know," Leonard replies honestly. "But I do think I'd like to find out."
And in the space of a heartbeat their lips meet, and though they're already touching Leonard still pulls her closer, craving more physical contact in a way he's almost scared of. And Sara's emotions are about the same; she doesn't fight when he pulls her closer, instead melting against him, into the kiss. It's all tongue and teeth and filled with so many emotions, the unspoken words between them suddenly unnecessary.
They pull apart when both realize they forgot how to breathe, and lie still with their bodies entwined, breating hard and both not quite believing the kiss they just shared was real.
"So. That happened," Leonard remarks.
"Yes it did," Sara replies.
"I liked it," Leonard says. "I liked it a lot."
"So did I," Sara says, and smiles. "Maybe even enough for an encore."
Leonard smirks. "I believe that can be arranged."
And their mouths connect once again, and this kiss is as firey as the last one. Sara can't help but think that for someone who calls himself Captain Cold, Leonard and his kisses are quite warm.
And this time, by some unspoken agreement, they don't stop. Leonard's shirt is the first to come off, and both gasp at the sudden skin-on-skin contact. They pause and stare at each other.
"Do you want this?" Leonard asks. "Us?"
"Yes," Sara says simply.
That's the only answer he needs.
Suffice it to say, his nightmares cease for the rest of the night.
...Was not sure where that was going to go until it went there. But it did go there, so ta-da. Hope you enjoyed...Day 2 will be up tomorrow! Please leave reviews!
