"Why?"

He was expecting a 'yes' but instead, Olivia questioned his proposal.

"...What?" Fitz asked, confused.

"Why now all of a sudden? Don't get me wrong - I'm touched, I really am but.. Why ask me now?"

"Because I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you? Why would you even ask me that?"

"Don't get so worked up. I'm just trying to understand because up until an hour ago we were barely even talking to each other."

"I get it but that doesn't mean we loved each other any less than before." He said, deciding to get back up on his feet. "I-- Tell me why you don't want to marry me."

"I never said that I didn't want to get married to you Fitz. Of course I want to be your wife someday but honestly I just don't think now was the best time to propose. Not while we are still trying to move on from that fight we had. We were literally avoiding one another for two days straight and now you're asking me to marry you.. I--" She turned the stove off then stepped forward to take his hands in hers. "I feel like our fight has pushed you into doing this and I don't want that. Yes we've made up but we're still not in a good space, I think. You say you trust me but for every minor thing involving Chad you're going to have a big reaction. I don't want him to have any further impact on our lives and our happiness. And I don't want you to allow him and his actions to get to you or to cause friction in our relationship." Olivia brushed her thumbs over his knuckles. "I do want to marry you Fitz and if you ask me again in maybe a few weeks or whenever after we've sat down and talked honestly about our feelings regarding this whole Chad situation, and we've come to a clear understanding, then I'll give you the biggest and loudest yes. But for now let's just get back to being us and let's work on our communication and comprehension, and our stubbornness because we should never have allowed one argument to push us into avoiding each other and not talking. I hated not seeing your smile waking me up these past few mornings."

In silence Fitz gazed into her eyes. Taking in everything she had just told him. "You're right. I do still want to punch him in his face and I'm gonna have to learn not to get so triggered when it comes to him. And okay yes, I'll admit, in some way our fight had sort of pushed me into proposing. So I'm sorry for the impulsive proposal, but the idea of losing you just fucking scared me. Although, if you must know, I am actually a hundred percent ready to be your husband, that's a fact. I mean I genuinely can't wait to marry you. I just-- I shouldn't have allowed him into my head like that. You deserve better than a rushed proposal.."

"So at least you now know that next time I'm going to need something a lot more fancier with great effort and planning involved." She joked.

"Oh for sure. I'm going all out baby."

"I can't wait."

"Just for the record, I heard every word you said and the thing is, I really do trust you entirely. It's him that I don't trust. I don't know what lengths he's willing to go to in order to get to you and I just want you to be safe."

"Forget about him. You're the love of my life and that's not gonna change - not now, not ever. Plus how can I not feel safe when I've got you around." She said with a wink.

"I love you and I'll always want to protect you even know I know that you can take care of yourself. So maybe I should learn to listen more instead of trying to take control of every situation.

"I appreciate that babe. And I love you too." She smiled and stepped into his muscular arms. "So tell me Mr. Grant, just how long have you been carrying that ring around?"

Fitz smirked and pecked her lips. "A while."

"Oh yeah?"

"Mhm, I kept it at the office because there was no way I was gonna let you stumble upon it."

"Oh is that so? By the way, can we just agree now that whenever we eventually get married in the future that I'll go by Olivia Pope-Grant?"

"And why can't you just be Olivia Grant?" Fitz asked playfully.

"It sounds lovely but the name Olivia Pope is well known and that surname has quite the reputation in the court of law. Also, OPG rolls nicely off the tongue doesn't it?"

"You know what else I'd like to roll off my tongue right now?" His naughty smirk said it all.

Olivia buried her face in his chest, laughing. "You're actually so nasty. Everything I just said and that's your response?"

"I heard you and I'm really turned on right now."

"Well I need to finish cooking." She tried to brush him off but failed. Fitz picked her up and set her on the countertop. "What do you think you're doing?"

"I wanna eat."

"Which is why I should be cooki--" Fitz kissed her feverishly.

"Not talking about food." He said with lust in his eyes as they broke the kiss.

Olivia smirked, "Take me upstairs."

"Yes ma'am."

So maybe the proposal didn't quite work out. But Fitz was about to have her screaming 'yes' for a whole other reason.
