Hiccup was once again, back in the cove. Dragon training had been going really well for him; Thanks to the unintended help of Toothless, he was able to find ways to defeat dragons without actually causing any harm to them.

As of this current moment, the reddish-brown haired boy was scratching his dragon best friend around the neck area. Toothless seemed to be enjoying it very much, tilting his head upward to the point that Hiccup took the chance and scratched him under his chin, causing the dragon to pause abruptly, then collapse to the grass floor, purring.

The scrawny teenager seemed surprised, staring at the Night fury before looking to his hands. Another realization formed in his mind.

Suddenly, rustling was heard, and the dragon rider jumped, alarmed. Toothless was still purring in satisfaction.

Hiccup lifted his forest green gaze, his sight advancing up from the fur boots to a bulky figure.

This person who caught them in a moment of their forbidden friendship was none other than Snotlout Jorgenson, son of Spitelout Jorgenson and cousin to Hiccup Haddock.

They locked eyes, cousin to cousin, and the first few words that broke the silence were-

"Hiccup, you just brought down a Night Fury!"

The Heir froze, "Well, yeah-this is the Night Fury I told everyone that-"

"This is the perfect opportunity to kill it! Keep it like that, I'll-" Snotlout was just about to turn back to the village when Hiccup called out.

"Don't!"

The larger viking looked back with a confused expression, "But why not?"

Hiccup paused. Oh boy, he didn't plan this. "Well-I-uh..."

"Cmon, don't tell me you're too chicken to kill it! Why are you giving it mercy?" Snotlout at this point was rather baffled. He didn't expect Hiccup to have that kind of reaction to the idea of killing the Night Fury. Why was he hesitating?

Meanwhile, said heir was at a loss for words. He couldn't think of an excuse. Hiccup couldn't say the truth either, or else he and Toothless would be in big trouble.

Suddenly, a roar was heard.

Toothless had gotten up, his light green eyes hostile as he watched Snotlout.

The Jorgenson was terrified, but covered it up pretty well. "It's back up, we gotta run to get weapons-!"

Before Hiccup could protest again, Snotlout ran off without turning back.

"Oh for Thor's sake...we gotta stop him bud." Hiccup turned to Toothless, then mounted the Night Fury.

They flew off to the sky, keeping a low profile as they tracked Snotlout before he reached the village.

Snotlout ran through the forest as fast as he could, running to reach the village when all of a sudden-

Claws grabbed him by the shirt.

"AHHHHHHH!" he screamed on impulse.

"Calm down!" went the voice of his cousin.

"Hiccup?!" Snotlout exclaimed in shock, and he finally looked up to see the Heir riding the Night Fury. "Wait, you're riding the-"

Hiccup sighed, "Yes. But hear me out here-"

Snotlout started to protest, "This is going against Viking tradition! We're supposed to kill dragons, not-!"

"I know. But I made a discovery, and I..I think-no, I KNOW that everything we know about dragons is wrong."

Toothless landed on a tree branch.

"They're food stealing monsters that killed hundreds of our kind!"

"And we've killed thousands of theirs!" Hiccup raised his voice, then sighed, "Look, just give a chance to see my point of view."

Snotlout frowned. He was having a mental battle. One side of him didn't want to find out, he wanted to tell the tribe of Hiccup's betrayal. The other was actually finding this pretty cool. Oh, difficulties, difficulties...

The Jorgenson finally grumbled, "Alright." and climbed the tree up to Toothless's back.

Hiccup looked back at his cousin, "Hang tight."

"Yeah yeah, I'm too amazing to die by falling!"

The Haddock rolled his eyes, and looked back to the front as Toothless prepared to take off.

Then they did.

The feeling was amazing. The wind blowing past them as they launched into the air, and then back down.

"Woahhhhhh!" Snotlout cried. The Night Fury was rather fast.

However, he couldn't help but enjoy the flight. Not that he was going to show that.

Hiccup laughed, "Whoo!"

Toothless warbled happily, not minding the extra weight.

"Great and all to be in the air, but how does this prove anything?" Snotlout asked as they came to a steady pace.

"Well, Toothless isn't dropping you or anything, is he? Nor is he bringing us to a flock of dragons waiting to eat us or something." the scrawny cousin replied.

Snotlout didn't reply. That was true. He didn't even question the fact that Hiccup named the dragon.

The flight went on for another round. Then, Toothless landed back on Berk.

As they dismounted the Night Fury, Hiccup looked at Snotlout. "Do you see what I mean now?"

Snotlout nodded, "Yeah. That was a pretty cool experience-"

Wait, what did he just say?

Lout paused suddenly, realizing what he just said.

Hiccup just simply gave a small smile, "Then what do you think of getting your own dragon?"

Next thing Hiccup found himself doing, was bringing Snotlout over to the arena, and looking over the dragon's cells.

Then he found him.

Hiccup pulled the lever, and out came a Monstrous Nightmare.

Snotlout whimpered very quietly as the red and black dragon growled, bursting into flame.

"Shh, it's alright.." Hiccup extended a hand.

The dragon looked at Hiccup skeptically, then it's pupils dilated and he calmed down. The flames died down as he pressed his head against the dragon rider's palm.

Snotlout watched, then came over when Hiccup gestured him over.

The scrawny boy used his other hand to encourage Snotlout to touch the Monstrous Nightmare's head.

Once his hand wasn't bitten off, Snotlout let out a small half sigh half laugh.

Even as Hiccup's hand went off the dragon's head, and Snotlout gave a slightly scared sound, the dragon didn't do anything. The aforementioned heir gave an encouraging look, and Snotlout took his hand away from his new friend.

Finally, he declared, "I'm going to name him Hookfang." All previous fear erased from his expression as he proudly looked at Hookfang.

Hookfang just snorted, like he didn't care.

Hiccup had a small smile on his face. He didn't expect his first ally to be his long time bully, but fate was rather artistic.

Author's note

On that note, thank you for reading and I will (maybe) see you all next chapter!
