"Ra talk"
"Percy/Ra talk"
Chapter 6 I put on the armor of God
The baboon was going crazy, like lit his tut with a lighter. Yes I know what I said, Ra was rubbing off on me. Anyway Khufu swung from column to column, bouncing along the balconies, overturning pots and statues. Then he ran back to the terrace windows, stared outside for a moment, and proceeded to go berserk again. Muffin was also at the window. She crouched on all fours with her tail twitching, I could tell someone or something was coming.
"Perhaps it's just a passing flamingo," Sadie suggested hopeful.
"I have a suggestion."
"Not now Ra." I thought.
"But this is important.
"Later." I roared as we ran to the glass doors. At first I didn't see any problem. Then water exploded from the pool, and two enormous creatures, were thrashing about with the crocodile. At first I could not make out what they were, only that they were fighting Philip two against one. However they disappeared under the boiling water, and Khufu ran screaming through the Great Room again, bashing himself on the head.
"Longnecks," Carter said incredulously. "Did you see those things?"
"I did but I wish I hadn't." I said pulling out Riptide's pen.
"That will not help. The metal of your weapon will not effect them." I did not want to believe him as I watched the croc get attacked. I watched as one of the creatures was thrown out of the pool. It slammed into the doors right in front of us, and Sadie jumped back in alarm. It was that moment I saw the thing had a body like a leopard's, but from the neck up. It was green and scaly and at least as long as the rest of its body. It's head was like that of a cat. When it turned its glowing red eyes towards us, it howled, showing a forked tongue and fangs dripping with green venom.
I wanted nothing more than to bust the doors open and kill the monster. But I could not rick the lives of the kids. The cat-serpent jumped back into the pool to join its companion in beating up Philip, who spun and snapped but seemed unable to hurt his attackers.
"We have to help Philip!" Sadie cried. "He'll be killed!" Sadie reached for the door handle, but Muffin growled at her.
"Sadie, no! You heard Amos. We can't open the doors for any reason." Carter said.
"Percy please." Sadie cried looking at me. I turned away from them. Any creature of water was supposed to be under my protection. But I could only turn my head disgusted that I was without option. The old crocodile turned. For a second his pink reptilian eye focused on me as if he could sense my concern. Then the cat-snakes bit at his underbelly and Philip rose up so that only the tip of his tail still touched the water. His body began to glow. A low hum filled the air, like an airplane engine starting up. When Philip came down, he slammed into the terrace with all his might.
The entire house shook. Cracks appeared in the concrete terrace outside, and the swimming pool split right down the middle as the far end crumbled into empty space.
"No!" Sadie cried. But the edge of the terrace ripped free, plunging Philip and the monsters straight into the East River. I walked away needing options.
"I—I recognized them, Sadie. Those creatures. Come on." Carter said dragging Sadie past me back to the Library.
"Where?" Sadie demanded, but he ran straight back to the library. Carter marched up to the shabti who'd helped us before.
"Bring me the…gah, what's it called?"
"What?" I asked.
"Something Dad showed me. It's a big stone plate or something. Had a picture of the first pharaoh, the guy who united Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom. His name…" His eyes lit up. "Narmer! Bring me the Narmer Plate!" Nothing happened.
"No," Carter decided. "Not a plate. It was…one of those things that holds paint. A palette. Bring me the Narmer Palette!" The empty-handed shabti didn't move, but across the room, the statue with the little hook came to life. He jumped off his pedestal and disappeared in a cloud of dust. A heartbeat later, he reappeared on the table. At his feet was a wedge of flat gray stone, shaped like a shield and about as long as my forearm.
"No!" Carter protested. "I meant a picture of it! Oh great, I think this is the real artifact. The shabti must've stolen it from the Cairo Museum. We've got to return—"
"Not the worst thing I've been apart of." I said deep in thought.
"We might as well have a look." Sadie said. The surface of the stone was carved with the picture of a man smashing another man in the face with what looked like a spoon."That's Narmer with the spoon," Sadie guessed. "Angry because the other bloke stole his breakfast cereal?" Carter shook his head.
"He's conquering his enemies and uniting Egypt. See his hat? That's the crown of Lower Egypt, before the two countries united."
"The bit that looks like a bowling pin?" Sadie asked.
"You're impossible," Carter grumbled. I rolled my eyes not really into the bit.
"He looks like Dad, doesn't he?"
"Sadie, be serious!"
"I am serious. Look at his profile." Sadie said arms crossed. Carter decided to ignore her. He examined the stone like he was afraid to touch it.
"I need to see the back but I don't want to turn it over. We might damage—" Sadie grabbed the stone and flipped it over.
"Sadie! You could've broken it!"
"That's what mend spells are for, yes?" Sadie stated.
"Thalia more and more." I said to myself.
"Well even we need one of her."
"Shut up." I growled. We examined the back of the stone, and I had to admit I was impressed by Carter's memory. Two cat-snake monsters stood in the center of the palette, their necks entwined. On either side, Egyptian men with ropes were trying to capture the creatures.
"They're called serpopards," Carter said. "Serpent leopards."
"Fascinating," I said. "But what are serpopards?"
"No one knows exactly. Dad thought they were creatures of chaos—very bad news, and they've been around forever. This stone is one of the oldest artifacts from Egypt. Those pictures were carved five thousand years ago."
"So why are five-thousand-year-old monsters attacking our house?" Sadie asked.
"Last night, in Phoenix, the fiery man ordered his servants to capture us. He said to send the longnecks first."
"Well…good thing they're at the bottom of the East River." Sadie said trying to reassure herself.
"I wish you had not said that." I said as Khufu rushed into the library, screaming and slapping his head. Carter told the shabti to return the Narmer Palette, and both statue and stone disappeared. Then we followed the baboon upstairs. The serpopards were back, their fur wet and slimy from the river, and they weren't happy. They prowled the broken ledge of the terrace, their snake necks whipping round as they sniffed the doors, looking for a way in. They spit poison that steamed and bubbled on the glass. Their forked tongues darted in and out.
"Agh, agh!" Khufu picked up Muffin, who was sitting on the sofa, and offered me the cat.
"Well cat unless you got a plan we are in trouble." I said tossing the cat to Sadie.
"Mrow?" Muffin looked up at me.
"It'll be all right," Sadie promised, trying not to sound scared.
"Sadie," Carter said. "They've found something." The serpopards had converged at the left-hand door and were intently sniffing the handle.
"Isn't it locked?" I asked/said thinking someone was a real idiot. Both monsters smashed their ugly faces against the glass. The door shuddered. Blue hieroglyphs glowed along the doorframe, but their light was faint.
"I don't like this," Carter murmured. The monsters smashed their heads against the glass again. This time a web of cracks appeared. The blue hieroglyphs flickered and died.
"AGH!" Khufu screamed. He waved his hand vaguely at the cat.
"Get out of here." I ordered trying to summon some of my powers but of course Ra's symbol burned, but I could not let that stop me. Carter then surprised me. He tugged a strange sword from one of Amos's wall displays. The blade had an odd crescent-moon curve and looked horribly impractical.
"You can't be serious," Sadie said.
"Unless—unless you've got a better idea," he stammered, his face beading with perspiration. "It's us against those things." The serpopards struck a third time, and the door shattered. We backed up to the foot of Thoth's statue as the creatures stalked into the great room. Khufu threw his basketball, which bounced harmlessly off the first monster's head. Then he launched himself at the serpopard.
"Khufu, don't!" Carter yelled.
But the baboon sank his fangs into the monster's neck. The serpopard lashed around, trying to bite him. Khufu leaped off, but the monster was quick. It used its head like a bat and smacked poor Khufu in midair, sending him straight through the shattered door, over the broken terrace, and into the void. I leapt from my spot and rolled under one allowing me to grab its leg and bring it down with me. The other hissed at me but it did not know poison was unless against me. I got to my feet and round house kicked the second one in the face. However I did not see the other one get up and grab me. It then threw me against a statue. I really did not realize till then that I was still weak from my last fight. And with me useless the others would die. I hated this, hated being weak. Unable to save those I needed to.
"There is but one way Percy."
"Okay Ra what is it?" I asked in defeat.
"Since we are almost one. You must call upon me and you will a power you've never known."
"Okay Ra let's do this." I said.
"Fulfill your duty." Everyone looked at me as an aura that resembled fire appeared around me. I got to my feet and raised my marked hand high and out from the sun disk erupted a phoenix like creature that flew around before clashing into me, encasing me in fire. When it cleared I had to admit Ra was right. This power was like nothing I knew. I wore a suit of Armour that resembles a falcon complete with razor sharp talons and claws.
"Whoa, I never felt anything like this." I said with my voice mixed with Ra's.
"However since this is our first time in this form you do not have complete control or access to my full power."
"Well this will be enough for know." I smirked. Everyone looked at me amazed by my new form. The serpopards came toward me but to me they looked like they were running at me in slow motion. I raised my arms and blocked their attack.
"Our turn." I smirked as I threw them against a wall. They were dazed for a minute before they came again. "It is unwise to go against the Pharaoh." I said waving my hand. Fire erupted from it and then created a sword from it. I took hold of it and held my ground. As they attacked again I cut one up the chest and knocked the other down with the flat side of my sword.
"Mrow!" Muffin said. The two red-eyed monsters bared their fangs. They forgot about me as they raised their heads and prepared to strike the cat. Then an explosion of dry air blasted through the room. It was very powerful, it knocked Carter and Sadie to the floor. I was no effected by this, but the serpopards stumbled and backed away.
"So you show your true self." I said as I looked who now saw before me. She was a woman—small and lithe like a gymnast. Her jet-black hair was tied in a ponytail. She wore a skintight leopard-skin jumpsuit and the cat's pendant around her neck. She turned and grinned at Sadie.
"About time," she chided. She turned to me. "And you," She pointed to me. "We will have a talk later."
"Ah Bast missed me." I just rolled my eye's thought i doubt they could see my eyes. The serpopards got over their shock and charged the cat woman. Their heads struck with lightning speed. But Bast leaped straight up, flipping three times, and landed above them, perched on the mantel. She flexed her wrists, and two enormous knives shot from her sleeves into her hands.
"A-a-ah, fun!" The monsters charged. She launched herself between them, dancing and dodging with incredible grace, letting them lash at her futilely. One then managed to knock her down as the other almost got a kill shot at her but I appeared over her blocking the attack with the side of my weapon in its mouth.
"No one hurt her." Ra said. I pushed the monster back and kicked the other one back and held out my hand. She looked at me and then held surprise in her eyes almost like she wanted to kiss me. But I snapped her out for the trance. "Talk later fight now." We fought back to back almost in perfect sync which had to be because of Ra. But even truly we managed to threaded their necks together. When we stepped away, the serpopards were hopelessly intertwined. The more they struggled, the tighter the knots became. They trampled back and forth, knocking over furniture and roaring in frustration.
"Poor things," the cat woman purred. "Let us help."Bast ready her knife and I encased my sword in fire. In a flash and the two monsters' heads thudded to the floor at her feet. Their bodies collapsed and dissolved into enormous piles of sand.
"So much for my playthings," the woman said sadly. "From sand they come, and to sand they return."
"Tell me how much that isn't different from the gold dust the others die in." I smirked. We turned towards the kids and they looked at us like superheroes. "However before I knew what happened Bast hugged me.
"I missed you." She said almost crying, I knew she meant Ra.
"It's good to see you to Bast." Ra said. "There will be time for talk later. But now we must leave."
"Right Carter, Sadie, we should leave. Worse will be coming." Bast said letting me go. Carter made a choking sound.
"Worse? Who are you two? What are you two? How did you do that?"
"All in good time." Bast stretched her arms above her head with great satisfaction. "So good to be in human form again! Sadie, can you open us a door through the Duat, please?"
"Um…no. I mean—I don't know how." Sadie tried to say a loss for words. Bast narrowed her eyes, clearly disappointed.
"Shame. We'll need more power, then. An obelisk."
"But that's in London," Sadie protested. "We can't—"
"There's one in Central Park." I said.
"I try to avoid Manhattan, but this is an emergency. We'll just pop over and open a portal." Bast said agreeing with me.
"A portal to where?" Sadie demanded. "Who are you, and why are you my cat?" The woman smiled.
"For now, we just want a portal out of danger. As for my name, it's not Muffin, thank you very much. It's—"
"Bast," I smirked.
" I should have known." Carter said as if he wanted to smack himself. "Your pendant," Carter pointed to the pendant around her neck."It's the symbol of Bast, goddess of cats."
"Correct Carter" Bast said.
"I thought it was just decoration but that's you, isn't it?" Carter asked.
"Wow Sherlock." I smirked as the armor disappeared from me.
"Now can we get going, while we can still make it out of here alive." Bast asked. But the look in her eyes told me she wanted answer from me about her Master.
"I wonder if she wants us to brush her."
"Okay that one I draw the line." I thought at the old pervert.
"What she's a cat."
"You are hopeless." I rolled my eyes.
Okay I hope you liked it. Please review and I will continue to write this more. Also if you want to see the Percy's Ra armor look up Ja-kal armor.
