Blank Gaze
Author Notes: Time for depression with a hint of shredded hearts as we're diving into a series i haven't seen in YEARS, and to this day I still don't know how i feel about it. There were some parts of the series I absolutely loved.
Others...well, it kinda made me cringe and uncomfortable about certain characters and plot(Still hate German after all these years to where I still deny his existence.) But regardless there was one scene that still brings a tear to my eyes at the mention.
One that's absolutely Perfect for the holidays- or at least my mood, but be prepared for my own tweaks and changes to this horrible tragedy! If you don't have a box of tissues do not read. I do not own Garo.
3rd P.O.V
"Why? Why did you come back! I told you to get somewhere safe." Within a matter of hours the lively, peaceful place he called home was reduced to ashes and rubble. The wonderful family of four who took him in was gone. Three of them nothing but dark gray silhouettes in the ground.
The only survivor barely able to move as her body is crushed by broken debris from the Horror attack. He knew the life he had been living up till now was too good to be true, still he prayed and worked in the hopes he would never have to fall into such an agonizing misery. However, this was to be expected.
It seemed Leon found himself time and time again being played with by the jaws of fate. "I'm sorry. I-didn't want to leave you to fight on your own." The moon shown high overhead, being his only way of seeing the damage done by the wretched monster.
Snowflakes gently landed on his already chilled skin but he hardly noticed. Due to fighting the Horror and running for help the teen was on an adrenaline high. And even if that wasn't the case, he didn't give a shit for how cold he was out in the start of what looked to be a harsh winter.
Right now the only thing the ex knight was concerned with was the girl in his arms. "Lara...stay with me!" His vision was failing as tears tried breaking free. But he held them back. He had to stay strong and do what he can to save her.
Lara laid in his arms, already crying as bruises and cuts covered her skin. This was the first time she had ever felt such excruciating pain, she could feel her energy depleting. Still she offered him a smile as she tried raising her hand to reach his.
The moment his crimson gaze took notice he gingerly took her hand, interlacing their fingers together. "This isn't what you're meant to do. There's somewhere you need to be Leon." Immediately shook his head. No. He didn't need to go anywhere-he didn't WANT to.
Not when the most important person in his life was dying right in front of his eyes. Before Lara met him, Leon's world was full of darkness with hellish nightmares to go along the never ending search for revenge. He was a blind sighted fool who kept to himself unless when fighting a Horror.
"I'm not going anywhere. I told you before this is my home now. You are where I need to be." He's changed. For once in his life he was in a position where he obtained happiness-had something valuable to love and protect.
A whine is heard from behind the couple as Lara's loyal dog limps their way. Panting as he lays right next to Leon to nuzzle his owner. That brings a small smile to the warrior's face. "It'll be just us three. Together." It was a dream both humans wanted, more than anything else.
But Lara disagreed, refusing to let her beloved have such delusions. She had known...from the moment she stumbled upon him in the forest he was special. And had desired to get to know of him. Much to her surprise that she found herself falling in love, ecstatic when he felt the same.
However, her biggest fear since growing attached to him was Leon one day leaving. To move on to greater things then some isolated village in the middle of nowhere. So many times he had stated that he had no intentions of abandoning her. He was more happier by her side then anywhere he's traveled for all of his life.
Never in any of her wildest bouts of imagination had she guessed that it would be her leaving him. "Goodbye...my beloved traveler. May we one day meet again. And next time, maybe you can take me with you?" With those final sentences, Lara eyes fell into a hazy glaze.
Her body fallen limp against her lover's chest. She had breathed her last. "Lara?" Gently he shook her, not wanting to believe her to be gone. She didn't move. Being no more then a corpse being manipulated like a doll on a string.
His canine companion howled in misery as the tears at the edges of his crimson eyes fell. Landing on her cheeks. "No..." The crunching of footsteps alerted Leon of company. "Please Lara-don't leave me!" His cousin Alfonso arrived, looking at the scene with a pained expression.
Despite his greatest effort to honor his kin's pleas, the prince donning the Garo armor wasn't fast enough. He had failed to save the one light that brightened Leon's existence. Shame and remorse filled his being as he held back tears of his own.
There was nothing he could say or do as he watched the broken man tremble with silent sobs, resting his head on the dead girl's shoulder in a vain attempt to hold in his pain. Frustrated at himself Alfonso clutched one of the remaining wooden beams.
Cursing the heavens for the never ending suffering his cousin had to undergo. Grief struck both men all while the snow continued to fall. As if trying to hide away the damage done. The wind slapped through their layers, but they paid it no mind. Their hearts were too far gone to care at the moment.
After what seemed like an endless amount of time passes, Leon carefully lifts up his lover's body. "Alfonso." The blonde prince immediately turns his gaze to his cousin, only able to see his back. "Yes?" Though he tried there was no deciphering the low tone coming from Leon.
"Can you tend to my furry friend here?" Blinking, Alfonso glances down, his gaze softening as he spots the dog he had seen with the trio earlier that day. "Of course." While both man and canine are distracted Leon walks off, tightening his grip on his precious cargo as he finds a proper place to bury her.
Awful whispers hits his ears. Numbing his senses as he keeps marching forward. His eyes as blank as Lara's, unable to grasp the reality he has now fallen into. Still he struggles, forcing one foot in front of the other.
When he finds a suitable spot he digs a grave with his bare hands, ignoring the sharp aches that trickle through his arms. Mentally and physically exhausted he pushed on even when salty crystals fall through his eyes once more.
The moon continues to move along with him, giving light to accomplish his task. It isn't long before he sighs, before carefully putting his precious companion into her final resting place. A bark catches his attention as he begins the grueling process of covering her body in dirt.
Many times Leon stops, sobbing as he feels his heart shatter into a thousand pieces. Lara's-now Leon's four legged companion licked the brunette's arm, trying to give what comfort he could. It is many attempts before the warrior is finally finished, panting as he rises from his kneeled position.
Dirt, sweat, snow and blood coated his form. The dog by his side has a good portion of his furry body wrapped in bandages. Both of them were broken and battered from this defeat. Lives were lost and though the monster responsible for all this was dead, there was no satisfaction gained from it.
At least they had each other. "Her death-their deaths, won't be in vain. I won't allow it." A cold nose is pressed against his tanned hand, another whine coming from the injured animal. Just by being there, a small warmth kept Leon from losing himself in the harsh cold night.
To be continued
Author Notes: So winter depression is a thing that I made up and am just going to use for this years theme or holiday season of ideas. This scene after all these years after rewatching it brought some salty tears of my own out.
