From the time Hiccup turned four years old and was blamed for the twin's destruction prank to the time he turned fourteen years old, he been falling in depression for ten years.
No one talked to him about his depression because he keeps it to himself. The only ones who knew about him feeling depressed were Gobber, Alistair and Ingrid Hofferson.
Gothi knew something was wrong with him because of he would be sent to her for his wounds from accidents, but didn't tell her how it happened.
They still suffer from dragon raids.
When a dragon raid happened, a Terrible Terror from his mother's nest would hide and watch over him incase a dragon went after him and would defend him against the other dragon.
The dragon would then bow their heads at Hiccup recognizing him as the Dragon Soul and friend and listen to his commands.
Any villager that saw the dragon flee from Hiccup would say that he got lucky and that he wasn't worth the effort to be killed only making him feel depressed about himself.
He spent everyday doing the same thing, wake up alone in his house, eat breakfast alone, go to the Forge to work. Work until noon and eat lunch, then go to the Cove to be alone and stay out of the village so that no one blames him for something that happens to the village.
They never made him feel welcome to the village. He just felt like they would be better off with him gone for good out of their lives.
He sighs sticking a sword in heater to heat up the blade for hammering down. After hammering the dent out and making it smooth and sharp, he sticks it in the barrel of water to cool down and harden.
Gobber looks outside to the sun to see it already noon and looks over at Hiccup and says "hey Hiccup, it's noon, why don't you take a break and go have lunch?"
Hiccup sighs and ask "are you sure, Gobber?"
Gobber smiles "Hiccup, you been working here since this morning for at least three hours. Go get some lunch before your stomach starts growling."
Hiccup nods his head and takes off his apron and heads home to his house to make himself lunch.
After Hiccup left the Forge, Gobber sighs "I wished he would open up to how his depression is."
Hiccup walked past a couple of houses to see Tuffnut and Ruffnut ran past him smirking at him and knew they setup a destructive prank to destroy the village and have the villagers blame him for it like always.
He opened the door to his house and closed it.
He walks out back to their storage seller and grabs a fish. He walks back inside and shuts the door and begins defilaying the fish.
Five minutes later, an explosion goes off setting a house on fire.
(In the village)
The fire brigade team and villagers rush grabbing buckets of water from the well and dumping it on the flames.
A half an hour later, the flames were put out and Stoick sternly scowls "who set the house on fire?"
Ruffnut and Tuffnut laughs "it was Hiccup! We saw him walk past us smirking. Probably for the fun of destroying the village."
Stoick scowls "I've had it with that boy! Everytime he leaves the house or the Forge, something blows up, because he decides to lash out against the village. He screams "HICCUP!" As loud as he can making everyone cover their ears.
(In the Haddock house)
Hiccup set his fish on a plate and begins eating it when he hears his father yells his name and sighs "everyone blames me for everything that happens in this stupid village."
Ten minutes later, Stoick opens the door and yells "what is wrong with you, setting houses on fire or wanting to destroy the village for revenge! I stuck you in the Forge, so you would stay out of trouble! By tonight I will have something to straighten you up and make sure you can't cause trouble anymore!"
Hiccup sighs listening to his father rant about him destroying the village for revenge.
After Stoick leaves the house to go clean his supposedly mess, Hiccup leaves the house and heads into the forest to wail in depression at being blamed for everything.
He makes his way down to the Cove and pulls out his sketch book and begins drawing dragons being playful with each other.
He stops drawing a dragon and begins drawing ways kill himself. Hang himself, poison himself, stab himself, set his house on fire with him inside his room. Cut himself and bleed to death or jump off a cliff and drown in the sea.
Soon a Terror that he named Sharpshot came to check on him to see him upset and croons softly and nuzzles his ribs trying to comfort him.
Hiccup sighs "nothing makes me feel better being on this island, Sharpshot."
Sharpshot claws in the dirt "I will stay with you until you feel better."
Hiccup picks up Sharpshot and places him in his lap and begins petting him.
Soon they both fell asleep in the Cove.
Two hours later, Hiccup stirs from his nap and thinks about his life and wanting to leave Berk to escape from the pain of sadness and loneliness.
He looks around to see the sun setting and gets up and sends Sharpshot away to safety and heads back home feeling more depressed than ever and thinking of ways to commit suicide or finding a way to leave Berk forever.
When he makes it halfway through the forest to his house, he hears the horn being blown signaling a dragon raid and says "great a dragon raid, just when my live couldn't get any worse!"
He runs out of the tree line and down the hill to the Forge to help Gobber with sharpening weapons to fight dragons.
Gobber sighs "I heard what happened after you left here, Hiccup. Are you feeling okay?"
Hiccup smiles "yes, I'm fine after going to my secret place of comfort to be alone."
Gobber sighs "are you sure, because I don't want to lose you Hiccup. Your like my own son since I basically raised you from four years old."
Hiccup sighs "I know, Gobber and you also kept me sane, and so I wouldn't fall apart in my depression."
Gobber curious ask "why don't you talk to someone about your depression?"
Hiccup sighs "they will only gossip about it and then one of the children would bullied me more about my depression."
Gobber sighs sadly "oh Hiccup."
About an hour later, the dragon raid was over and everyone was tired and sore from the raid.
Fires were put out and villagers were cleaning up the village and seeing what could be saved and what was destroyed.
Hiccup ignored the complaints about the dragons destroying their homes as far as he was concerned, no one knew what he does in his secret Cove with his guardian Terror named Sharpshot.
About eight o'clock, he helped shut down the Forge with Gobber. Putting out the boiler and cleaning up the work space.
Afterwards, Gobber tells him "why don't you head home, Hiccup because your father still mad at you for that house fire, that the twins destroy?"
Hiccup sighs "how do you know it was the twins that set the house on fire?"
Gobber laughs "they were bragging about it to Snotlout, Astrid and Fishlegs while dropping off their weapons for repairs after they told your father that it was you that set the house on fire."
Hiccup sighs "and neither one of them could tell my father that it was the twins who set the house on fire? Oh yeah that's right they are all friends that hangout together and leave me out!"
Gobber sighs "Hiccup, one day, karma will pay them back. Don't give up on hope that your life will get better. Promise me, Hiccup?"
Hiccup sighs "I promise to never give up hope."
He leaves the Forge to head home, but thought better to go camping out in the forest to get away from the villagers.
He walks home and climbs up the side of his house to climb in his window on the roof and grabs his blanket and pillow and climbs back through the skyline when his father calls "Hiccup? You up there?"
Hiccup ignores him and leaves heading into the forest to go to his secret Cove to camp. He scowls "those idiots blame me for everything they do to destroy this village and Astrid and Fishlegs don't even stick up for me! They're no better than the other three because they're a gang and I'm the outcast!"
He entered his secret Cove and collected a few sticks and puts them in a teepee and uses to rocks to ignite the wood. He walks over to the lake and fish out a fish with a small spear his height.
Soon he hears a croon and turns around to see a black dragon with green eyes, eighteen feet long with a wingspan of twenty feet wide and Sharpshot and smiles "Sharpshot, what are you doing here?"
Sharpshot claws in the dirt by the fire 'I came to bring you a brother and another dragon friend. He was injured in the raid'.
Hiccup sighs "okay then" and looks at the black dragon and ask "are you hungry bud?"
The black dragon growls signaling he was too close for comfort.
Hiccup walks over to the lake and spears a fish and offers the fish to the black dragon.
The black dragon sniffs the fish with gummy gums and Hiccup ask "toothless? I could of sworn you had-"
The black dragon snatched the fish out of his hand and eating the fish "-teeth."
The black dragon looks at Hiccup and smiles a gummy smile at him.
Hiccup reaches out to pet the black dragon only for it to growl at him, so he holds out his hand with palm up and turns his head away closing his eyes.
The black dragon closes his eyes and touch his snout to Hiccup's palm purring.
Hiccup smiles "I'm going to call you Toothless."
Toothless purrs softly at the name, Hiccup gave him.
Hiccup laid down on his pillow next to the fire and covered himself up with his blanket and says "Toothless, tomorrow, I'll take a look at your injury when we have light to see, is that okay with you?"
Toothless nods his head yes and lays down next to Hiccup closing his eyes.
Hiccup stares at the stars in the sky "I really want to leave this island and live with dragons."
(At the Haddock house)
Stoick stoke the fire waiting for Hiccup to return home to tell him the news before he takes the men on another quest to hunt for the nest. Two hours later, he decides to head to bed and search for him in the morning.
(In the Cove)
Next morning, Hiccup woke up and sighs and gets up and goes to the bathroom in an out house made within a tree. Then spears two fish from the lake and share one with Toothless then takes a look at his injury to find a sprain wing bone and says "your grounded until this bone heals, so how about I bring you fish at night?"
Toothless nods his head in approval and takes a nap.
Hiccup leaves walking back to the village.
Twenty minutes later, he exits the tree line to see the village and sighs "another day in a horrible village where no one wants you around" and makes his way down to the Forge to get started on work and act like he was never born in the village.
He begins heating up the boiler. While the boiler heats up, he begins sharpening weapons that need sharpening.
A couple minutes later, Stoick sternly calls his name "Hiccup. I have two things to tell you."
Hiccup sighs "what do you want dad?"
Stoick smiles brightly "I was going to tell you that after I left yesterday frustrated with you setting a house on fire, I setup a marriage contract with the Hoffersons to make sure you can't get into trouble anymore and that I'm leaving on another nest search."
Hiccup gasped "you setup a what?"
Stoick smiles "a marriage contract with the Hoffersons. You and Astrid are to be married after you both turn fifteen."
Hiccup sighs "why would you do that for? And how could you get them to accept it?"
Stoick smiles "I offered to provide all three parts of the marriage contract and to make sure you don't blow up anymore houses. So I suggest you start getting to know Astrid Hofferson before you both turn fifteen years old."
Hiccup sighs "I've had a crush on her but she would never give me a chance to talk to her. How did you get her parents to sign the contract?"
Stoick smiles "Alistair and Ingrid Hofferson were thrilled about the marriage contract between you two, but Astrid wasn't thrilled until I offered her a little extra after the wedding and I'm not telling you what it is!"
Hiccup sighs "great, I'm engaged to Astrid!"
