Chapter 2

Jade was quickly taken up to L&D. She was forced to change into an ugly, uncomfortable hospital gown and wear a fetal heart rate monitor on her nonexistent baby bump. She was laying in the hospital bed with Beck sitting next to her in a chair, as they waited for the doctor to check her over.

"There's no fucking way I'm pregnant. These people are crazy." Jade said to Beck, still in complete denial.

"Jade, we saw the ultrasound. And we can hear the heartbeat right now. If that doesn't mean you're pregnant, then I don't know what does."

"God, Beck, of all the times you could've picked to be calm, you really had to pick right now. How the hell are you not freaking out about this? We're not even 19 years old yet and we're gonna have a baby!"

"What's the point of freaking out? It's not like freaking out will magically make this baby disappear. We are having a baby, whether we're ready or not."

Jade was about to counter when the doctor walked in.

"Hello, Ms. West. My name is Dr. Lauren Walters. I'm the on-call OB-GYN. The nurse told me she did an ultrasound and discovered you're 38 weeks pregnant." The doctor the introduced herself as she walked in, and then sat down on the stool in front of the bed.

"So she says. I still don't think there's any way I can be pregnant. I don't look pregnant, I haven't had any symptoms, I haven't ever felt the baby move, and I've still had a few periods in the last 9 months."

"Well, I can definitely confirm that you are pregnant. I looked at the ultrasound, and it's definitely a baby. Not to mention the fact that you're having consist contractions, as shown by the contraction monitor, and your baby has a steady heartbeat, as shown by the fetal heart rate monitor. The only thing I'm not to sure on is how far along in your labor you are. I'd like to check cervical dilation, if that's alright with you."

Jade hesitantly nodded, as she brought her knees up closer to her chest, and spread her legs slightly. The doctor quickly did the exam, and confirmed what Jade was in denial of.

"You're 9 centimeters dilated. One centimeter to go, and you should have your baby soon. I need to go prep the delivery team. I'll be right back. Press the call button if you start feeling the urge to push."

The doctor quickly left, leaving thick tension in the room.

"I can't be a mom." Jade whispered to no one in particular.

"Babe, you're gonna be a great mom."

"No I won't, Beck. I didn't exactly have the best role model, and we literally just found out about this baby. We're ridiculously unprepared."

"I know you say you don't like little kids, but I know you secretly do. You're amazing with kids, in your own special way. And this kid will be ours. Half you and half me. This kid will love you." Beck reassured, placing his open palm on Jade's stomach, where the baby was. He then placed a kiss on her forehead , and her lips. Jade reciprocated the kiss, but then pulled away when more pain ripped through her body. At the tail end of the contraction, she felt a weird pop and then a gush of liquid.

"Beck, I think my water might've just broken."

"Really? How can you tell?"

"Because I just felt a pop and a gush of liquid, and I'm assuming that's what it feels like when your water breaks. Just press the call button."

Beck pressed the call button on the side of the bed like Jade told him, and then ran his hand through his hair; a tell-tale sign he was nervous.

"I can't do this, Beck. I'm not ready to have a baby. I can't." Jade rushes out, tears welling in her eyes.

"Baby, you can do this. You are the strongest, bravest, most amazing person I know. You can do this. You are gonna give birth to our beautiful baby. You can do this." Beck assured, staring into her eyes to make sure it sunk in.

A few minutes and another, more painful contraction later, the doctor and a couple nurses came back into the room. They started prepping the materials for the birth, and it was not calming Jade's nerves.

"You pressed the call button. Is everything alright?" One of the nurses asked Jade.

"I think my water broke." Jade responded.

"Ok, Ms. West. I want to check your dilation again." Dr. Walters said.

Jade nodded, giving her consent. The doctor quickly checked Jade's dilation, and then removed the bottom half of the bed and raised the stirrups.

"You're fully dilated and I can feel the baby's head. Have you felt an urge to bear down with any of your most recent contractions?"

Jade looked at the doctor with a confused face.

"Have you felt an urge to poop? Sometimes the urge to push can come in the form of an overwhelming urge to poop."

Jade nodded, a blush creeping up her cheeks.

"Ok, that's good. It means your body's ready to have this baby. On the next contraction, I want you to try pushing. Just bear down, as if you were pooping. It's ok if you do poop, it's perfectly normal."

Jade nodded again, being unable to talk, seeing as another contraction was creeping through her body. Once Beck noticed she was getting another contraction, he offered her his hand. She gripped onto it as if it were a lifeline. She bore down with all of her strength, squishing Beck's hand in the process, and felt the most intense pain she'd ever felt in her life.

"Good, Ms. West. The top of the baby's head just came through. You can feel it, if you would like." The doctor said, giving an encouraging smile.

Jade shook her head, feeling as if she was unable to move, due to the immense pain from the contraction. Jade pushed again, feeling the same burning pain. She pushed two more times until the contraction ended.

"The very top of your baby's head is right there. You're not crowning yet, but you are very close. You're doing very well, especially considering this is your first baby."

Jade gave a weak smile, still trying to catch her breath from pushing. Beck gave a reassuring kiss to the top of her head, and lightly squeezed her hand three times. This was their wordless way of saying "I love you."

When Jade felt another contraction, she pushed again, 5 times within the contraction. She felt an even greater sense of burning between her legs.

"You're baby's head is about halfway out. You two will be parents very soon."

"I can't do this. I don't want to do this. I don't want to be a mom. I can't." Jade slurred out, tears falling down her face.

"Baby, you can do this. You are doing this. You're doing amazingly. You're gonna be an amazing mom." Beck reassured, yet again.

"I don't want to keep the baby."

"Um, why don't we talk about this after the baby's born? Just focus all your energy on getting this baby out." He said, not really wanting to have that conversation while the baby's head was halfway out of Jade's body.

Jade pushed through two more contractions, and before anyone knew it, a screaming baby was being placed on Jade's chest.

Everything from then on was a blur for Jade. The last thing she remembered was staring down at the screaming baby. After that, everything was dark.
