Chapter 3...

{Jace's POV}

Isabelle turned to look at me with a mask of shock covering her face, she was met with a similar expression on mine. Hodge Starkweather - ALIVE. He had been the right hand man of Valentine Morgenstern.

The fact that Starkweather could have been alive all this time begs the question, could Valentine be alive?

We heard people starting to leave the meeting, it had obviously been concluded.

Isabelle shuffled over to me about to whisper something, yet she knocked one of the chakrams onto the floor.

A loud CLANG echoed throughout the hall and Izzy looked at me with regretful eyes.

There goes our shot of not being caught.

So I simply stood up and helped Isabelle with me, and stepped out from behind the weapons stand to see some familiar faces looking at us.

To be precise: Izzy's parents Maryse and Robert Lightwood, my parents Celine and Stephen Herondale, Jocelyn Fairchild and of course Alec and Jonathan.

"Sooo...anyone fancy some Taki's for dinner?"

{Clary's POV}

I turned and took my stance, I threw the knife forward with such force that only the hilt could be seen sticking out of the dummy's head.

I walked over to retrieve my throwing knife from the head of the sword.

As I pulled out my knife I looked closely at the runes carved into it, runes I had seen from my visions. The runes that nobody at Morgenstern Manor had been able to fully understand except myself.

There were none in the Gray Book even close to my own - but my runes gave me all the power and strength I needed.

Placing the knife back on the wall of weapons I picked up my kindjals, boy had it been a while since I had used these.

However, they felt secure in my palm, they felt powerful under my grasp. I stood in a fighting stance against the wooden dummy.

I swung my right arm in an arc cutting deep into its midsection. I then twisted to roundhouse it in the head, knocking it over. Then I leapt onto it and drove my left kindjal into the heart of the dummy.

I took off my training glove and noticed I was sweating hard, I must have lost track of time.

"Clary? Are you in here?"

Came a voice from the training room doors.

"Yes Amatis, over here."

Amatis Graymark peered down at the wooden dummy with a kindjal stuck in its chest and simply raised her eyebrows.

"Someones prepared for tonight's mission I see."

She joked and smiled.

"Yes, just getting some last minute practice in."

"Like you need it Clary, I would pay good money to watch anyone last more than 45 seconds in a ring with you!"

Amatis replied with a wink.

She wasn't wrong, Valentine had raised me to be the best, and anything less than perfection was never accepted.

As a result, training became my outlet, my source for anger and pleasure in equal measure.

At the age of 12 I beat my first trainer and my father kept giving me more. After my 10th trainer, he himself began training me. He taught me all of his tricks and moves. Until we were evenly matched. I could not beat him, and he could not beat me - he was the best shadowhunter of his generation, and I was the best of my generation.

"How long before dusk Graymark?"

I asked.

"You have about half an hour, I suggest you go prep yourself."

"Okay, I will see you in the hall in 20 minutes for my mission brief Amatis"

I stated. It may seem strange to some that a girl of 16 speaks to one of her elders in such a definitive manner, but for me I knew my ranking.

The only one who dared speak to me in an ordering tone was my father, everyone else knew I was above them, so they held their tongue. Knowing I could knock them on their ass in a matter of seconds if they pissed me off.

"Clary I layed out a new gear set for you in your room, try to not wreck this one eh?"

"No promises."

I smirked up at her, and then swiftly exited the room.

{Isabelle's POV}

I elbowed Jace in the ribs for making such a joke when we had just been caught eavesdropping in on a private institute meeting.

"Jace, Isabelle!"

Came the voices of our startled mothers in unison.

"By the Angel, you two know that you are forbidden to enter the hall when the Clave is in session!"

Exclaimed a very angry Celine Herondale.

"Well it's not like we didn't know that. But you guys have been in here for 3 HOURS, so we got curious"

Jace's charming voice answered, putting extra emphasis on the 3 hours. He had a way about him when he was getting himself out of trouble, making it seem like it was THEIR fault for taking so long.

"Isabelle I expect better from you, you know that we would tell you both anything of utmost importance-"

"Like Hodge Starkweather being alive."

I cut in before my father (Robert Lightwood) could finish. After the words escaped my mouth I bit my tongue - aware that I may have just provoked him further.

"I think it is better that they know,"

Alec said, giving me a brotherly smile.

"I agree with Alec, they were going to find out anyway - since we are the one going on the mission tonight"

Jonathan spoke up., the two older boys in agreement. Yet both mine and Jace's eyes widened at the sound of the mission.

"Hold up Jon, where have you gotten the impression that you four are going on the mission?"

Came a concerned voice from his mother, Jocelyn Fairchild.

"Well Imogen did say that she would need the best Shadowhunters on the mission. And us 4 certainly fit that description."

Jonathan replied, not a hint of doubt in his voice. I did see him share a small smirk with Jace though, both of them in agreement that we were the best for the job.

"Do not get excited just yet you 4, I think that Robert and I are the best for this type of mission."

Stephen stated a bit too loudly, staring daggers at Jace, everyone knew that Jace loved the hunt and would do almost anything to go on a mission.

A voice spoke up from the corner of the room, someone must have slipped in without us noticing.

It was Imogen Herondale, the Inquisitor.

"I will be the one to select who goes on this mission, son"

She spoke directly to Stephen. The only sound echoing across the room for the next few seconds was the tapping of Imogen's shoes as she crossed the floor.

"And as the Inquisitor I agree we need the best of the best here."

"See kids, my mother agrees that me and Robert should be the ones on this mission."

Stephen spoke confidently and with pride as he shared a glance with his parabatai.

I could feel my face had dropped, they had just dangled the chance of a dangerous mission in front of us and snatched it away. My disappointment was mirrored in the faces of Jace, Alec and Jon.

"Actually Stephen, I think it would be best for you to be accompanied by Jace and Alec. You and Robert are parabatai and so are Alec and Jace, a formidable team if I say so myself."

Jace looked like he had just received a brand new gear set for Christmas, and Alec was beaming at him. But Imogen was not done.

"And as for Jonathan and Isabelle you will be the perimeter scouts for these four, ensuring demonic activity is at a zero."

All us four teens were gobsmacked, to be sent on a mission by the Inquisitor herself was quite an honour.

Imogen took our silence as a sign to continue.

"You all have half an hour to get geared up and fitted with weapons, I will then give you further details."
