I have had some questions about how often I am posting. I live in the UK and I am a student, so I am aiming for about 1-2 chapters a day.

Also most of the POVs will be Clary and Jace as they are the central characters in my story.

Wow Chapter 8…

{Jace's POV}

The second I felt everything go dark I knew something was up - the Institutes security system was far beyond any ordinary technology.

This was a purposeful black-out.

I heard the black doors to my right burst open. I cursed loudly, I didn't have my night-vision rune activated, I was very literally in the dark. Rolling my eyes at the irony of it.

Then a horrific sound came from where Hodge was, a dreadful gargling and spluttering filled the room.

I bolted over to where the noise had erupted from and nearly tripped over something large at my feet.

I reached out in thin air hoping to catch anything.

To my surprise I caught hold of what was someone's shoulders. They were too low down to have been Hodges or my fathers.

Reflexively I tightened my grip and forced whoever it was to turn around and face me.

As soon as they turned around a gasp escaped my lips.

It was those same intense green eyes, captivating me. There were so many stories in those perfect orbs, loss and suffering and anger.

{Clary's POV}

I was hastily twisted around into someone's arms.

I was met with those pure gold eyes looking straight back at me. His eyes. They wouldn't fit on anyone else, he looked at me with such intensity it seemed to unlock a part of me I didn't know I had any more.

But then reality set in. He was an enemy with his arms on me, I had to get away.

I pushed hard against his chest, and he loosened his grip just enough for me to slip out of his grasp and start running out of the Institute. I headed for the forest on the grounds of the Institute.

{Jace's POV}

I had loosened my grip on her shoulders, surprised by her strength and she had bolted.

But I wasn't going to let her go that easy. I heard shouts from my father as I sprinted after the girl.

She was heading for the forest, clever girl. Heading for covered land.

She was very fast, so I pulled out one of my throwing knives and flung it straight for her leg. It caught her straight in the back of her knee.

She stumbled slightly and fell to one knee.

As I was nearing her location I saw her pull out the knife and stand to face me.

I unsheathed my seraph blade and aimed it straight at her throat. She was not getting away this time.

{Clary's POV}

He had the upper hand but I wasn't done yet. I whipped out Heosphorus at such a speed he couldn't prevent me from doing so.

I pulled the blade across my body into a defensive position.

My body had gone into survival mode - this was the woman my father had trained me to be.

He made the first strike as if to slice into my side, I blocked swiftly with Heosphorus. Then sliding onto one knee I swung his legs out from under him.

Although even on the ground he didn't give up, he kicked out at me and just connected with my bad leg. Sending a wave of nausea through me.

Ignoring it I scrambled back up to my feet and made as if to go for his side with Heosphorus. But at the last second I ran and jumped on top of him. Causing him to fall down, with me straddling his hips.

I had his arms pinned underneath each knee - he was immobile.

Normally in this situation I would have made a snarky comment and then driven the blade home into their chest. But with him I couldn't do it.

It was the way his eyes looked into mine - like he was really seeing. Like he saw Clary Morgenstern rather than the demon-blooded shadowhunter trying to kill him.

{Jace's POV}

She had the blade of her sword positioned at my chest. But I saw her hesitate, and I looked into her eyes.

"Who are you?" I breathed.

"Someone you don't want to know" she responded. Her voice sounded like it was betraying her - as if there was an internal battle going on inside.

The next words I spoke took me by surprise.

"I can help you" I told her

Her eyes glimmered slightly, as if nobody had said those words to her before. They probably hadn't.

But as quickly as her eyes softened, they hardened again. I could tell she was putting a guard back up - something I knew a lot about.

"I don't want your help. Try anything again Blondie and I will kill you." she spoke through a clenched jaw.

Then she swiftly leapt off of me and began drawing with her stele in thin air. I had never seen anything like it before.

I was too stunned by what she was doing to stop her.

I saw the rune she had drawn fizz and turned into a portal. This girl had just made a portal out of thin air. Another thing to add to her skill set.

She turned and looked at me before she stepped through, confusion in her eyes. I still couldn't clearly see her face due to the black leather hood she had casting shadows.

And the next second she was gone.

{Clary's POV}

Where the boy's face was previously it was now the window of my bedroom.

I stalked out of my room - still in my gear - and marched into my fathers office, with a lot of confidence.

"All taken care of father. Hodge Starkweather is dead." I stated in an accomplished tone.

He turned to look at me with a small smirk tugging on his mouth.

"My congratulations Clarissa. You have done well in my name, you are truly a Morgenstern."

"Thank you father"

"Now off to rest - we have much to discuss over our future plans tomorrow. The time has come to reveal myself to the Clave"

My eyes widened, was he really ready to reveal to the Clave that the most deadly man alive was still a threat to them. I wish I could be there to see the face of the current Inquisitor and Consul.

{Jace's POV}

After allowing myself one more minute to understand what had just occurred in front of my eyes, I jogged back over to the building.

All the power was back on and the Sanctuary was flooded with Nephilim. I burst through into the room to see Hodge's dead body be covered over with cloth.

So she had murdered him, I thought. But why, what interest would a rogue shadowhunter have in Hodge Starkweather.

Before I could dwell on my thoughts I was pulled into a tough embrace by my father.

"Jace are you ok? When you took off like that I got worried. It was her, wasn't it?"

"Yes it was her. But I couldn't catch up to her - she was too quick and then she just vanished"

I couldn't believe it - I had just barefaced lied to my father over a girl who nearly killed me.

Whoever you are shadowhunter, we will meet again soon. Sooner than you think.

Tell me what you think of Jace and Clary's first one on one fight!
