Chapter 9...

{Jace's POV}

Many rumours were spreading through the Institute the next day.

Hodge Starkweather's murder caused more questions about this mysterious shadowhunter.

Who was she? Where was she trained? And the most common one, will we see her again?

I knew I had to see the girl again, it wasn't a question for me. I didn't understand her, and I usually had no problem being able to read people. But with her, everything became fuzzy in my mind.

{Alec's POV}

Jace had been pretty checked out lately, I could sense something was up with him. I could feel it, one of the perks of parabatai (or downsides, depends how you see it) is that you could feel the emotions of the other.

Whenever I, Izzy or Jon saw him he was either lost in thought in his room ; or training. It seemed he never slept or ate.

But since the death of Hodge in the Sanctuary, he had been even more strange.

So being the great friends we are, me Izzy and Jon confronted him in his room.

"Yo Herondale," Izzy called before sitting on Jaces bed.

Jace walked out of his bathroom with just a towel around his waist, I blushed a little and turned slightly so he wouldn't see it.

"Put some clothes on man, we are your siblings for heaven's sake" declared an exasperated Jonathan.

"I believe you are the ones who are in MY ROOM" even at his small retaliation he headed back into the bathroom and came out some black cargo pants and a grey sweater.

"So is their a purpose behind this invasion of privacy?"he asked

"Yes there is. We want to know what's up with you? And don't you dare tell me it's nothing - Iz and Jon can sense it and they aren't even your parabatai." I was fairly demanding in tone. I hated it when Jace kept things from me - we were closer than brothers, he should tell me everything.

"Ughhh. By the Angel you guys are annoying" He countered with, rolling his eyes a little

None of us replied, we all just continued to stare at him until he finally spoke.

"Fine, but I haven't exactly told anyone yet. My father asked and I lied" we all shifted a little, Jace and his father were so close. This had to be something big for him to lie to his dad.

"Go on" Jon prompted

"When I ran after that girl in the Sanctuary, I did catch up to her. And we fought, but she won" I could tell it hurt Jaces pride immensely to admit that - putting a small smile on my face.

"She didn't hurt me though. She used a fighting style I have never seen before, it was like she wanted to beat me without actually hurting me." He explained

"Aw, Jace thinks the shadowhunter assassin found him hot so didn't kill him, how cute!" Izzy's voice dripped of sarcasm. Earning herself a tight glare from Jace.

"As I was saying, she had the opportunity to kill me even. But she didn't."

"But here is where it gets very interesting. As I was on the floor she drew a portal. I mean she took out her stele and drew one, she created it guys"

We all didn't know what to say, the only runes used by shadowhunters were the ones in the Gray Book. The fact that she could create something only Raziel had done sent chills down my back.

"Jace are you sure, only warlocks can open portals?" Jonathan's curiosity had spiked dramatically.

"Of course I am sure, I have never seen anything like it."

{Clary's POV}

It was about 6am when I decided I had, had enough of tossing and turning in my bed without getting any sleep.

I shrugged on some camo joggers and a black tank top to go for a walk.

One thing I liked about the Manor was how big the land was, we had about 7 acres all to ourselves. And it was heavily warded everywhere mind you - so nobody could track us or even enter without an invitation.

As I was walking, my mind kept wandering back to the boy. The boy with the golden eyes and the golden hair.

When I looked at him I didn't feel that urge to kill, he looked at me like he could see right through me. And for a second back there I had nearly faltered - he was the only person who had ever seen anything other than my cold, hard exterior.

When he had stared at me I felt more angel than demon. I shivered a little, that wasn't the case though.

I'm sure if he knew what I really was then he wouldn't look at me that way.

The only man capable of loving me was my father, that was what he had told me anyway. Even though I doubted that sometimes.

The cold air suddenly caught me in a gust of wind and I began to make my way back to the Manor.

{Time Skip}

Once I had re-entered my room I shrugged on some training gear, ready for an early morning session with my father.

However, as I passed the dining room I heard voices coming from behind the door, so I chose to listen in.

{Valentine's POV}

"As many of you may know by now, my daughter Clarissa was successful in her mission. Previous Circle Member Hodge Starkweather is now dead. Let that be a lesson to all of you."

"But that is not why I have brought you here, now is the optimum time to make my move against the Clave. The Nephilim are in disarray, associating themselves with downworlders - they have disgraced the Angel Raziel."

A murmur of agreement rippled through the group of shadowhunters I had arranged to attend this meeting, our common hatred of demon blooded creatures showing true.

"My attack against the Clave will centre around hiding the identity of Clarissa. If they ever find out what I did to her, they would have her killed. So at all costs she must remain secret. Clear?"

I darted my eyes around the room, daring anyone to stand against my word.

And then someone did.

"If Clary is our greatest weapon why not show her to the Clave. Let them cower in fear of the power we have." The one who spoke was Pangborn.

"A fair enough suggestion Pangborn, but in a game of chess the most powerful piece on the board is the Queen. You do not release the Queen first. You show the hand of the King'

Pangborn lowered his head in submission. I had always like having Pangborn at my side, on the occasion he was too opinionated mind you.

"And this is why we are going to hand Clarissa straight over to the Clave"

I heard gasps of surprise surround the room.

"If she is right under their noses they will never suspect a thing.

{Clary's POV}

I only managed to hear one sentence through the thick wall.

I stumbled back and hit the wall behind me as my father's voice said, "Hand her over to the Clave".

He was giving me up, he was sending me away.

Maybe he thought he had turned me into too much of a monster. He couldn't handle me anymore.

But what hurt the most, was he planned to give me to THEM.

I didn't stay to hear any more, I ran to my room.

Putting on my gear I grabbed my weapons, including Heosphorus and ran.

{Jace's POV}

The others were all stunned when I admitted what the girl was capable of.

It went against everything we had been brought up to believe, that Raziel was the only one with the power to create runes.

"I am sure there is an explanation, a shadowhunter cannot create portals" stated Alec, although I loved him he did lack the imagination a lot of the time.

"Alec, I have seen the things this girl is capable of. Just judging from her fighting technique anyone could tell that this girl is something else."

"I know Jace, it's just so absurd."

But I didn't find it absurd, I found it made me drawn to this girl. I felt a desire to see her again - and that was my plan for tonight.

So Clary misheard Valentine's plan, what will happen tonight when Jace goes searching for her.
