Chapter 36…

{Jace's POV}

The last thing I remembered was taking Clary's hand to go through the portal.

Then everything went black.

My head was banging when I woke up.

Opening my eyes with a start, I was staring into the pale blue eyes I knew belonged to my parabatai.

"Jace, you okay?"

Came Izzy's worried voice from my other side.

"Yeah, just got a headache."

Creasing my brows in confusion, I asked,

"Where's Clary?"

The two looked at each other uneasily, not settling my nerves at all.

"Is she ok? What's wrong?"

"I'm fine. You on the other hand…"

Her distinctive voice called out a bit away from me.

Standing up slowly, I saw she was crouching at the edge of the Lake.

"What do you mean?"

After a moment's pause, Clary stood up and began walking over to us whilst talking,

"This is Lake Lyn."

"We gathered, what does that have to do with anything?"

Alec questioned rather impatiently.

"Jace drank some of the water before I got to him. Which means the water is in his system"

Izzy's face suddenly drained.

"I remember now, we learned it in school. The water of the Lake has mystical properties, if you drink it…"

She looked at me worriedly.

"If Jace is not seen too, then he will go mad with hallucinations."

Clary stated, speaking as she usually did, factually.

"Standing right here you know"

I spoke, irritated that they were talking to me as if I were some child.

"Precisely why we need to get to Alicante as soon as possible. In around 2 hours you will be stumbling."

Clary spoke, and gestured for us to follow.

Alec fell into stride beside me and Izzy hurried up to Clary - probably wise, as Clary didn't have a clue where she was.

Idris was a second home to shadowhunters, yet once again Clary was an exception.

I was starting to realise that there were probably a lot of rules and regulations Clary was an exception too.

{Clary's POV}

Truth was, I was worried about Jace.

I knew first hand what the effects of the Lake had on a person, it was agonising after a while.

Which is why I was grateful when I heard Isabelle's voice from my side - keeping my mind off it.

"Clary, do you actually know where you're going?"

She asked jokingly.

"Not a clue."

I winked at her.

"I'm hoping you know how to get to Alicante, we need to get there as quick as we can… for Jace."

I mumbled the last part as I glanced back to watch him with Alec, he looked fine for now.

"I do, Clary do you think he will be ok?"

Izzy asked from the perspective of a concerned sister.

"Faster we get there the better."

Was all I could think of saying to her.

{time skip}

Throughout the first 2 hours I was very grateful for Izzy's constant chatter.

Yet all I wanted to do was go and help Jace, even from in front of him I could hear his breathing become more ragged.

But I knew I had to distance myself from Jace, as whenever I was near him I wanted to be with him.

I wanted to touch him, to be in his embrace again.

No Clary.

I would tell myself every time, I had to get Jace out from under my skin.

"Clary can you see that?"

Izzy asked, pointing out some random building in the middle of nowhere.

It seemed to be surrounded by many smaller buildings.

"Yeah, let's head that way."

We arrived there within a couple minutes and I felt my heart beat slow.

The little buildings weren't 'buildings'. They were gravestones.

We slowed down as we went under the arch that led into the small cemetery.

There was a plaque with bold writing on it.

"Izzy what does it say?"

The girl squinted her eyes and after a moment responded.

"The cemetery of the disgraced."

She replied in a deadpan tone.

Instinctively my hand flew to the hilt of Heosphorus, this place gave me the creeps.

"This must mean we are about 1 mile from Alicante, let's keep moving."

Alec said from behind me and Izzy.

Following his suggestion we made our way through the winding path in between the graves.

I was about 5 meters from the end when I saw something that caught my eye.

Curiosity got the better of me and I slipped off the path to have a closer look.

Ice rushed through my veins when I made out the words.

Clarissa Adele Morgenstern

August 1991 - December 1991

Beloved Daughter and Sister

Ave Atque Vale

Then the weight of it came crashing down on me.

Even when I was a mere few months old they had decided I was disgraced.

I was put here because I was the daughter of him.

{Izzy's POV}

I saw Clary waver off the path slightly and thought nothing of it.

Until I glanced back and saw the girl was frozen stiff.

"Clary? Clary, what's wrong?"

She still didn't move.

Sharing a wary look with the others, I moved to stand beside Clary and see what she was entranced by.

Shock ran through me like a lightning bolt.

I covered my mouth with my hand to suppress a gasp.

Flickering my attention to Clary I saw the girl was staggered by her grave.

"Everything okay up there?"

Jace's voice pierced through the silence - making Clary snap out of her reverie.

"Yes, it's nothing."

Clary replied - glaring at me with startling pale eyes.

Her gaze told me that this was not a matter she wanted the boys to be aware of.

Deciding it was wise for my own safety to obey, and I swiftly fell into step beside Alec on the path. With Clary just behind me.

{Jace's POV}

I knew that whatever the girl's had seen was not 'nothing'.

But determined it was best not to push the idea.

Fortunately I fell into step beside Clary - leaving Alec and Izzy in front, chattering away.

They were probably as excited as I was, Alicante was home. And it always felt good to be home.

On the other hand, Clary would be hesitant about entering the home of her people - considering it wasn't really hers.

Suddenly something caught my eye and I lit up.

"Clary, look there."

She followed my hand and her eyes widened when she saw them.

"Beautiful."

I heard her whisper softly.

"What are they?"

"Those are the demon towers. They ward Idris off against demons."

It was clear that she was in awe of her first glimpse of the city - yet in her expression there was an undertone of worry. Which I assumed most would not have picked up on.

"Clary, are you ok?"

I queried gently.

"Fine."

She responded curtly.

Being a little taken aback by her harsh words, I opened my mouth to retort.

When a strange sensation gripped me, and I felt my knees buckle.

{Clary's POV}

I knew I was being rude, but I had to keep my contact with Jace as minimal as possible.

Unexpectedly I felt Jace crumple to the floor beside me.

Lake Lyn. The water.

I had been so sucked up by what I had just witnessed that I had almost completely forgotten that Jace was in desperate danger.

Kneeling beside him I turned his face towards me.

"Jace, can you still hear me ok?"

I demanded.

"Yes. But legs, so tired… need rest…"

He sputtered out.

Hearing Izzy and Alec now with me made me less tense.

"No, Jace you need to stay awake."

"Mhm."

He mumbled back.

I took that as a yes.

Now talking to Alec and Izzy I spoke with clarity,

"The Lake's properties are spreading. They will reach his head soon. That is when his hallucinations will begin - we need to get him to an Infirmary as soon as we can."

The other two just nodded and helped me haul Jace back to his feet.

With one arm over Alec's and one over mine, Jace stumbled forwards.

We broke out into a run - with Izzy ahead of us.

~ time skip ~

We had been running for almost 10 minutes when the gates of Alicante loomed up in front of us.

"Alec, where do we take him."

I asked breathless - carrying Jace had been no simple task.

"We have family friends who can help."

"Who?"

I asked impatiently.

"Helen and Aline."

Following Alec's directions we wound our way through the city - sticking to the outskirts as much as possible.

Though there were not many people out - they were all in the Guard.

As it was currently in session.

So the only Nephilim who would be out would be the younger shadowhunters, the ones not old enough to attend the meetings.

After a short few minutes we reached a grand house.

Sprinting up the steps, Izzy knocked on the door sharply.

Soon, a tanned girl with long black hair opened the door.

Her face erupting with shock the second she saw Jace.

"By the angel"

Were the words she breathed before ushering us all inside.

Sorry for that cliff-hanger folks!

When I am back from my holiday I will be releasing multiple chapters at once for you.

Stay safe, see you all soon !
