Chapter 44…

{Jace's POV}

It was about 11am when Clary finally appeared at the top of the stairs, and it was all I could do to stop my jaw from dropping down to the floor.

She was dressed in Shadowhunter gear like me, except hers had been modified.

In truth I had seen this exact gear before - but seeing Clary always took my breath away. Moreover, Clary generally seemed more confident in gear anyway, similar to how she felt more comfortable in a training room rather than her own bed.

The sleeves had been cut off at the shoulder which left her arms exposed.

However it did not make her look vulnerable in the slightest, being able to see the newly drawn runes on her arms made her look powerful and determined.

If I looked at her arms properly I could see the lines of lean muscle surrounding her bone, the strength in something so small always astounded me.

"Are you ready then?"

I asked as Clary reached the last step.

"I will be, once we have retrieved all the weapons from the Guard then I will be ready."

Clary answered with clarity, her tone was much more serious than it had been this morning. Which I knew meant that she was mentally preparing herself for the task at hand, planning an assasination on your father could not be easy.

"Well then, off to the Guard."

And I gestured for Clary to lead the way, before realising that she probably had no clue where to go, so I slipped out the door first and began on the road to the centre of the city.

{Clary's POV}

The walk to the Guard was short, thankfully Jace didn't ask any questions on the way there. I was using this time to clear my head, trying to wrap my head around what I was asking of myself, and of Jace.

Previously in my life I had never had to worry about anyone but myself, but now things were different.

I had given myself to Jace, and him to me.

As we approached the wide oak doors I caught at Jace's sleeve, causing him to stop in his tracks.

Looking him into the eye I asked,

"I haven't given you a choice in this at all, if you are not willing to do the task I will totally understand. I can go alone an-"

"Clary. You have asked nothing of me that is too great, even if you hadn't asked me to go I would have volunteered anyway. We are a pair now, wherever you go I will not be far behind."

Fuck Jace and his perfect way with words.

I cursed in my head, outwardly I replied with a grateful smile and bent my forehead towards his.

"Together."

I breathed, and we parted.

Although as we walked into the Hall we would brush shoulders as we walked - the slightest touch reassuring me.

Once we had entered the room properly I was startled. I had expected there to be only ones I knew in the room to see us off, however there must have been at least 200 Nephilim in the room.

Glancing to my right I gave Jace a questioning look, he just shrugged in response.

Clearly as shocked as I was that there were so many people in the room.

Obviously noticing someone, Jace caught my hand and led me to the front of the room where a large group of people stood murmuring quietly.

I realised that I knew all of them instantly, and they all went quiet once they saw Jace and I.

"What's going on?"

I queried to no one in particular.

"The Consul decided to take your advice, these are Nephilim from Institutes across the globe. They are here to fight, at your orders."

Imogen explained briefly, standing next to her son Stephen.

"Hold up, what do you mean 'my orders'?"

I fired back quickly.

Before she could open her mouth to answer, a woman appeared at my side.

"Clarissa, she means that you are the one that recommended that I invite Nephilim back home to fight. What they do now is on your orders, I will direct them during your absence. However I will need instructions from you now to do so."

Consul Penhallow spoke from my side, and I couldn't believe my ears.

This woman had resented me when we had first met - to be specific she had called me a 'filthy half-breed'.

I was completely baffled by what was happening, so I turned to the other's again.

"Well, what am I supposed to do? Tell them that they could face a painful death if they follow my orders?"

I saw Jon's mouth quirk up at the corners.

"I see no amusement in this."

"You see, sister I do. You are a natural born leader, and yet you do not see it. Devise a plan to aid the Nephilim here, so that whilst you are with Jace we can continue."

It was times like these I really pictured Jon as my brother - his words seemed to speak to me so clearly, like wiping away fog on glasses so I could see the picture as a whole.

I matched his grin evenly,

"Well I do have a few ideas…"

I let my voice trail off at the end to allow my mind to think before I next spoke.

"I will need a map of Alicante and the demonic borders you have in place."

I announced, consequently the Inquisitor gestured to the table in the middle of the room and she started making her way through the crowds to the table.

I followed in her stride as she cleared the pathway, when we passed the other Shadowhunter's in the room they all looked at me and would fall silent mid conversation.

Until everyone's attention was on me.

Gulping at being the centre of attention in such a large room, I moved opposite to Imogen by the table. I had always hated having people watching me, especially when they were gawking like they were now.

I decided to just keep my eyes on Imogen, so my eyes wouldn't wander.

Precisely, she reached to the centre of the table and pressed down sharply, all of a sudden a massive mapping of blue lines sprung almost out of the table.

I had nearly fallen backwards. I was so shocked by the map becoming 3D.

"Clarissa, this is a map of Alicante. As you can see, surrounding it is a transparent blue wall ; and the wall is made of sectors, meaning they are controlled independently of the others."

Imogen briefed me, although I heard her words my mind was transfixed on the map and I was analysing the advantages and disadvantages of it.

Finally it came to me.

"So it's possible to take down certain sections of the barriers and not others?"

I looked up through my eyelashes at Imogen, and she nodded sharply in response.

A small smirk was playing on my lips, and a smug feeling ran through my body.

"Then I propose that you open 3 sectors, allow demonic blood to pass through those 3 points."

I heard a large murmur of gasps from behind me, and someone called out worriedly,

"You mean allow the creatures to waltz into our city? Are you mad?"

I was unable to resist the urge to roll my eyes, sometimes Nephilim lacked thought and were definitely too quick to judge.

"If you take down 3 equally spaced sectors to be disabled across the circumference of the wall then the demons will all focus their numbers into those three points. Therefore, split your soldiers into 3 squadrons and the demons can all be controlled at these areas."

Once I had finished speaking I dared look to the people around me, with a tinge of joy I saw that they were beginning to understand my plan.

{Imogen's POV}

I was beginning to be rather fond of the Morgenstern girl, and when she explained the method behind her plan of madness I couldn't stop a small smile creeping onto my lips.

Even if she had learnt her cunning methods from Valentine, the plan she had just enacted was nothing short of brilliant.

"But why let them in anyway? The invisible boundary will hold, it has for millenia."

I did not know who the voice belonged to, but I saw Clary's face stiffen with an underlying frustration before she whirled around to where the voice had come from.

"It has held against one or two demons, yes. BUt you have NO idea what you are up against if you think your weak barrier will hold against thousands upon millions of demons, not to mention greater demons. This approach is the best solution - if not then the demons will eventually force entry and your city will be attacked from all sides."

Whether people liked it or not, Clary sounded so much like her father. She was a born leader, as Jonathan had said.

Yet the question that still remained was whether she would lead the Clave into victory over her father, or leave it in ruins because of a great defeat.

Hope you guys liked this chapter.

You haven't really seen Clary take on a leadership role so here it is!
