"Get a grip on yourself, Luthor", the hissed into the silence of the empty office.

Not that it was completely impossible to spend time with Kara in such a way, in fact they'd done these things quite often, but around Christmas Kara's whole family had come to National City and they would be staying for the whole week including New Year's Eve. So, Lena was sure that Kara would spend all her free time, outside work and Supergirl duties, with her family and friends.

This thought made Lena smile sadly. On the one hand she was happy for her friend but on the other hand she longed to be part of this family, to feel as loved as she imagined Kara felt. She had never known the unconditional love of a true family as Kara always described it and even though she had experienced more love and care over the last year, Lena still felt like an outsider whenever she spent time with the group around Kara. Even when she was alone with Kara, Lena sometimes felt like she wanted let go and display her soft interior but could not at most times. And the worst part was that Lena thought she knew why she could not even show her best friend all she truly was. She was afraid – afraid of not being enough, afraid of revealing herself and of being left behind, afraid of the pain of loss she only knew too well.

Sighing deeply and swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, Lena got up from her chair and went to get herself a glass of Scotch. She took a sip and savored the taste of the liquid as it went down her throat. When she returned to her desk she saw that she'd received a message from Kara. Instantly, Lena's heart leapt with excitement – Kara had not forgotten about her despite having her hands full with work, Supergirl duties, Christmas and her family's visit. The CEO set down her Scotch and opened the message.
