However, she need not have worried because Kara's mother immediately stepped forward and hugged her. Lena stood still for a moment but then returned the hug – hesitantly, but she did and found that it actually felt good even though she did not know Kara's mother yet. No sooner had Lena pulled back from Kara's mother, did her father gave the Luthor a hug as well.
"So, you're the one Kara's been talking about so much for the last year", her father was saying as he stepped back from Lena to look her in the eyes.
Upon hearing those words Lena's heart clenched but when she found his gaze she saw that he was smiling and her chest felt a bit lighter.
"Ah, yeah, I guess so", my god, what was wrong with her? Her well-trained eloquence was gone and she was a bundle of nerves. "What did Kara tell you?"
Kara's mother gave Lena a gentle smile and grasped her shoulder, "That you are an amazing friend, a brilliant scientist and that you have been using all your family's resources to do good and help the DEO and Supergirl."
Lena stared, lost for words and then she looked around at Kara who was still standing by her side, smiling broadly.
"Kara, you…", Lena stammered, not daring herself to speak and unable to express what she was feeling. "I don't know what to say. I never thought…Thank you", Lena finally managed to say and this time it was her who hugged the reporter tightly.
"I was only telling the truth", Kara giggled as she returned the hug.
"She most definitely was telling the truth", Mon-El said and Lena looked around at him in surprise. He too was smiling, "The way you helped me escape my mother's ship and saved the planet and then you made it possible for me to return here. Without you I would have lost Kara forever."
Yet again, Lena was left speechless as she stared at Mon-El. "Thank you, Lena", he said and, to her utter surprise, also gave her a hug.
"Mon-El, I…I never intended for you to have to leave but…", she faltered, feeling guilty and remembering how much his departure had hurt Kara.
"But there was no other way to save the Earth", he finished for her, "and it was me who pressed the button and not you, Lena", Kara added, touching her friend's forearm.
Lena, truly touched by their understanding and kindness, said, "Thank you. I'm very glad I was able to help you come back", she added to Mon-El.
"Me too", he said with a smile and walked over to give Kara a quick kiss before going to the kitchen.
"So, are we ever going to get to say hello to Lena or are you going to keep her to yourself all evening?" said a deep voice.
James, Winn and J'onn had come over and each shook Lena's hand as they exchanged 'hellos'. Even Maggie had come over to say hello. This probably surprised Lena the most since she knew that any Luthor was no favorite of Maggie Sawyer's and the two women had had some unpleasant run-ins. So Lena smiled at Maggie and took her hand when the detective extended it.
"Alright, everyone the turkey is done!" Mon-El's voice came out of the kitchen.
"Oh my god, you got a handsome, nice guy that also cooks?" Lena burst out uncharacteristically playfully, surprising herself.
Kara and the others stared at the Luthor for a moment and Lena's heart seemed to miss a beat, fearing that she'd said something terribly wrong, but then all of them burst out laughing.
"I didn't know you were that funny, Luthor", Maggie chuckled and inclined her head appreciatively.
Lena breathed a sigh of relief which Kara noticed and quickly rubbed her back to reassure her friend. The reporter was well aware that this situation was something Lena was not used to and felt rather nervous about. So she wanted to be there for her best friend and support her in any way possible to make this the best Christmas she'd ever had.
