======CONTINUATION INTO PART III======

[The scene resumes at the Building and Loan establishment. Chip is signing papers with a room full of the board of directors.]

"Thanks, Chip; I think that's all we will need you for. I know you're anxious to make it to your train," The Chairman said.

Chip stands up. "I have a taxi waiting downstairs." He said, packing his briefcase.

"I want the board to know that Chip gave up his trip to Europe to help straighten things out here these last few months. Good luck to you at school, Chip." The Chairman said.

"Good luck, Chip." Everyone collectively chanted.

"Now we come to the real purpose of this meeting, to appoint a successor to our dear friend Mr. Oakley." The Chairman said.

"Mr, Chairman, I want to get to my real purpose for this meeting. I claim this institution is not necessary to this town anymore. Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I make the motion to dissolve this institution and turn its assets and liabilities over to the receiver." Fat Cat said.

"Fat Cat, you dirty, contemptible...I'll wring his neck!" Monterey Jack shouted as others restrained him.

"Chip, did you hear what that hairball just said?" Monterey Jack said in outrage.

"Mr. Chairman, might I add that it is too soon after Mr. Oakley's passing to make such decisions." A member said.

"Mr. Oakley died three months ago. I second Fat Cat's motion." Another said.

"Very well, I'll ask the two executive officers to withdraw. But before you go, I'm sure the whole board wishes to express its deep sorrows at the passing of Mr. Oakley." The Chairman said.

"Thank you very much." Monterey Jack said.

"It was his faith and devotion for this organization that has kept us going for so many years." The Chairman said.

"I'll go further than that. I'll say the public Peter Oakley was the Building and Loan." Fat Cat stated.

"Oh, that's fine coming from you. Considering you probably drove him to his grave." Monterey Jack snarled.

"Peter Oakley was not a businessman. That's what killed him. Oh, I don't mean any disrespect to him. God rest his soul. He was a chipmunk of high ideals, so-called. But ideals without common sense can ruin this town. Now you take this loan here to Ernie Bishop, you know, that fellow that sits around all day waiting for someone to ask for a ride in his taxi. I happen to know the bank turned his loan request down, but he came over here, and it was accepted. Why?" Fat Cat explained.

"Well, I handled that, sir. You have all the papers there. His salary, insurance, I can personally vouch for his character." Chip said.

"A friend of yours?" He asked.

"Yes, sir." Chip said.

"Uh-huh, you see, if you shoot pool with an employee here, you can come and borrow money. What does that get us? A discontented, lazy rabble instead of the thrifty working class. And all because of a few starry-eyed dreams like Peter Oakley who stir them and fill their heads with impossible ideas." Fat Cat explained.

"Just a minute. Now hold on a minute. You're right when you say my father was no businessman. I know that. Why he ever started this place, I'll never know. But my father was a better animal than you ever will be. Now I know I've wasted your time, but I want to say this before I go. This town needs this institution for those who are turned down by his banking institution. " Chip said as he grabbed his stuff and left.

[Outside the meeting room.]

"That was telling him, Chip, You sure put him in his place." Monterey Jack said.

"What happened? We heard a lot of yelling?" The assistant asked.

"We're being voted out of business. You know, easy come, easy go." Monterey Jack said.

The Chairman then exited the office and approached Chip.

"Chip, you did it. They voted Fat Cat down. However, there is one condition." The Chairman said.

"What's that?" Chip asked.

"The board has voted for you to be the Executive secretary and replace your father in leading the business." The Chairman said.

"Oh no, I couldn't. Monterey Jack can run the business, can't he?" Chip asked.

"You can keep him on. The only way this works is with you, Chip." The Chairman explained.

[The scene fades.]

Dale sighs. "I know, I know he didn't go. Such a shame Chip couldn't pursue his dreams of adventuring. However, I believe he did a good deed by keeping that business open." He said.

"That's right. Not only that, but he gave his school money to his brother, Harry, and sent him to college. Harry then went on to become a football star. Made second-team, All-American." Joseph explained.

"Yes, his family must have been so proud of him. Whatever happened to Chip?" Dale asked.

"Chip got four years older awaiting the return of his brother Harry to take over the Building and Loan," Joseph explained.

[The scene transitions to Chip and Monterey Jack at the train station. Monterey Jack is sitting on a bench. Both away, the arrival of a train.]

"There are plenty of jobs around for those who like to travel. Look at this. Here. Venezuela oil fields. 'Wanted, an animal with construction experience.' Here's the Yukon, 'Wanted, an animal with engineering experience." Chip explains, demonstrating the job advertisements.

Before Chip continues to read the next want ad, the train horn blares.

"There, she blows." Chip said.

"You know what the three most exciting sounds in the world are?" Chip asked.

"Breakfast is served. Lunch is served. Dinner is served." Monterey Jack said, patting his stomach.

"No, Monterey Jack. Anchor chains, plane motors and train whistles." Chip said with a chuckle.

"Peanut?" Monterey Jack said, offering the paper bag to Chip.

Harry and his wife Ruth greet Chip and Monterey Jack.

"Why is it the great explorer Chip," Harry said, hugging Chip.

"And it's the Professor." Chip replied, patting Harry's back.

"It's good to see you, brother and you too, Monterey. Where's mother?" Harry asked.

"At home, making dinner. Come on, let's go. Everyone has been waiting to see you." Chip answered.

"Well, hold on just a minute, I want you to meet someone. This is Ruth Dakin." Harry said.

"I prefer Ruth Dakin Harry if you don't mind." She said.

"Huh?" Monterey Jack said.

"Well, I said I had a surprise on the telephone. Here she is, my wife." Harry said.

"Well, I'm proud of you, brother. Congratulations." Chip said, shaking his paw once more.

"Say, Harry spoke about your father giving him a job, and I think we'd be delighted to look into it," Ruth said to Monterey Jack.

"Oh, well, come along. I'll tell you more about it.

Monterey Jack and Ruth continue walking. Harry and Chip hang back.

"Um, Ruth was speaking out of terms when she said about taking that job. You've done a good job holding down the fort for the last four years. You know what, let me just grab the bags and will talk more about this after." Harry said.

Harry ran off back to the train while Chip stood there in disappointment.

[The scene fades to Chip, Monterey Jack, Harry and Ruth, along with many other family members and friends posing for a group picture.]

"Hold it, hold it." The cameraman says.

He then tapes the picture. Everyone cheers and gathers to head back inside to continue the party.

"Oh boy, oh boy, oh, boy. I feel so good; I could spit in Fat Cat's eye. And I think I will. I'm going to spit in his eye. What did you say?" Monterey Jack slurred.

Chip shook his head, chuckling at his antics.

"Maybe I better go home. Have you seen my hat?" Monterey Jack asked.

He turns around, and Chip removes his hat from his head and holds it. He spins around.

"Oh, thank you, Chip. Now, which one is mine?" He slurred.

"The middle one." Chip replied.

Monterey Jack took the hat and put it on. "Now, if you'll point me in the right direction home. Will you do that for me, Chip?" He slurred.

"Sure, it's down here and right that way." Chip said, pointing.

"Thank you, old Building and Loan pal. Huh?" Monterey Jack slurred.

Monterey Jack began to sing 'My Wild Irish Horse' as he began stumbling home. However, he tripped on the way out and knocked over a bunch of glasses.

"I'm all right. I'm all right. Who put that table there anyway?" Monterey Jack said, stumbling back to his feet and walking away.

Chip snickered as he lit a cigarette and pulled out his travelling brochures—chip's mother then came out and kissed him.

"That's for nothing." She said.

"Hi, ma." Chip replied.

"What do you think of her?" Mrs. Oakley asked.

"She swells, isn't she?" Chip said.

"She'll certainly keep Harry on his toes." She said.

"Yeah, and out of Bedford Falls too." He sighed.

"You know, Gadget is back from school for three days now. You should visit her." She said.

"Maybe, I will. Care to point me in the right direction?" Chip asked.

His mother pointed him in the right direction, and Chip proceeded to walk and then turned around and went the other way.

"Good night, Mrs. Oakley. Chip said.

Chip then went for a walk to the town centre, stopping to gaze his eyes at the small town's many sights. He then is confronted by Tammy.

"Well, hello Chipper, I mean Chip. What brings you into town? Where are you headed?" She asked.

"Oh nothing, you know me, just probably going to end up at the library." Chip said.

"Oh, Chipper, don't you ever get tired of reading?" Tammy asked.

"Yes. Say, what are you doing tonight?" Chip asked.

"Nothing. What do you have in mind?" Tammy asked.

"Let's go up to Mount Bedford and take off our shoes and walk through the grass, watch the sunrise and go on adventures. It will be great!" Chip rambled excitedly.

"Grass? Climb a mountain? Have you gone mad, Chip? It's 10 miles to the top of that mountain." She said.

Animals that gathered in the background began to laugh at Chip's ridiculous intentions.

"Alright, fine. Suit yourself." He said, storming off.

Chip then walks to Gadget's house. He paces the front of the home as she watches him from her bedroom window.

"What are you doing down there, picketing?" She asked.

"Oh, hello, Gadget. I just happened to be passing by." Chip said.

"Yes, so I've noticed. Have you made up your mind yet?" She asked.

"How's that?" Chip asked.

"Have you made up your mind?" She responded.

"About what?" Chip asked.

"About coming inside. Your mother just phoned to say you were on your way to pay me a visit." She said.

"My mother just called you? Well, how did she know? I didn't tell anyone I was coming over here." Chip questioned.

Gadget then ruffled her hair and rushed downstairs to the front door. She put the 'Buffalo Gals' record on the gramophone and opened the door.

"Well, are you coming in?" She asked.

Chip stood there and struggled with the gate. He kicked it, and it opened. He walked over and entered her house. She led him to the living room, where they sat down on the couch. The song came to the point where they both once sang it before.

"And...dance by the.." She began to sing, and Chip just looked at her oddly.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah." He said, waving his hat, then looking at his watch.

"It's nice about your brother Harry and Ruth, isn't it? Gadget said.

"Oh yeah, yeah, that's wonderful to hear." He said with a sigh.

"Don't you like her?" Gadget asked.

"Well, of course, I like her. She's a peach." Chip said.

"Oh, is it just marriage, in general, you're not enthusiastic about, huh?" She said.

"No. Marriage is all right for Marty and Harry and Sam and you." Chip said.

"Gadget, Gadget!" A female voice called.

"Yes, mother?" She said.

"Who's down there with you?" She asked.

"It's Chip Oakley, mother." Gadget answered.

"Chip Oakley, what does he want?" She said.

"I don't know. What do you want, Chip?" Gadget asked.

Chip pointed to himself. "Me, not a thing? I just came in to get warm." He said, standing up.

"He's making violent love to me, mother." Gadget said.

"He better not be. Sam Wainwright is expected to call you tonight from New York." She said.

"What does your mother mean? I didn't come here, to-." He began to say.

"What did you come here for then, Chip?" Gadget asked.

"I don't know, you tell me. You're supposed to have all the answers. You tell me." Chip demanded, raising his voice.

"Why don't you just go home." She said.

The phone rang in the background.

"That's where I'm going. I don't know why I came here, to begin with." Chip said.

Chip exits the house. Gadget answers the phone to speak the same. Chip returns to get his hat back. He then speaks with Sam on the phone. Gadget and Chip eventually fight and then kiss in the end. Both fall in love and plan to spend the rest of their lives with each other.
