Chapter 2
Christa loved the winter months for all the cute jumpers, scarves and other cold weather gear! But on the flip side she absolutely hated being cold. Going out for lunch with one of her friends sounded great when they had arranged to meet in town but when she stepped out into the snow and felt the chill hit her even with all the layers she had on, well, she had second thoughts.
Securing her extremely cute earmuffs she resolved to head out and prayed that the weather report was wrong and there would be no more snow today.
Some guy ran past and waved to her whilst she fished her car keys out of her jeans pocket. Christa smiled to herself under her scarf, she enjoyed being recognised. That guy was probably a fan right? She thought to herself. She was an up and coming model after all, it was only natural to have fans.
"Oh that's better!" She sighed to herself, the heated seat in her car kicking in nicely, warming her legs and rear. The girl drove off carefully, wary of driving in snow.
Just as she got down to a junction an SUV tore right past her, skidding through the snow and almost clipping their front bumpers.
"Asshole!" Christa yelled, mainly to herself, she wasn't even brave enough to beep the car's horn at the guy. There was no telling what some people might do when fuelled by road rage, especially to a small and slender girl like Christa.
She scowled at the other driver, seeing the guy in what looked like a blind panic, wife yelling at him from the passenger seat and kids crying in the back. Christa watched as he sped off in a hurry, hoping not to come upon a crash if they went the same way as her.
God, some people just don't know how to drive! Fuming internally she yanked her auto into drive and made her way to the town close by.
Calming down as she drove, she started to sing along to the Christmas radio. By the time she pulled up and had parked semi neatly, just out of the lines- who cares?, Christa's mood had improved considerably and she was feeling festive once more.
"Breaking News-" emanated from the radio, cutting off Jingle Bells, but was itself cut off as Christa pulled the keys out of the ignition and pocketed them. She'd seen the news this morning, and this was just more riots probably.
The chill in the air was biting at the slim girl again as she stepped out of the high rise car park and out onto the street. Shivering, she trudged off to find the little café where she was meeting her friend.
The town wasn't as busy as she'd feared it might've been, this close to Christmas it was just the unorganised running around looking for last minute gifts. A siren screamed to life right behind her and almost gave her a heart attack.
"Jesus!" She breathed out, clutching a hand to her chest.
An ambulance tore past her and made it's way into town, siren blaring all the way.
"Christa!" A familiar voice called out to her from across the road.
Looking over she spied her best friend in the whole world and ran over to hug her, not even looking both ways as she crossed the street.
"Ymir!" Christa smiled up at the taller girl, letting her hand be taken as she was led to Rose Café.
As the pair sat in the cosy little café, Christa admired her friend's outfit. Even in the dead of winter Ymir refused to be done up like a mountaineer, instead braving the cold in tight fitting jeans and a crop top. Ymir was from Germany originally but had moved for her modelling career, where she had happened to meet Christa a couple years back and the two had been best friends ever since.
They had even done a lingerie shoot together, Ymir liked to get hands on and it had led to their online following shipping the fuck out of them. Christa was adamant however, they were just friends. Even if Ymir swung both ways, and maybe they had kissed just once to try it, so what? Just friends.
"Oh I'm going to have the chicken salad, please." Ymir's voice brought Christa from her day dreaming and she noticed their waitress had arrived and was now looking at her.
"Erm... Can I have the uhh..." Christa flipped through the menu, Noticing Ymir smirking at her she stuck her tongue out at her. "The turkey dinner please, Gabi!" Christa smiled sweetly at their waitress, reading her name badge as she handed back the menu.
Gabi took down the order and disappeared to the kitchen.
"What? I'm starving!" Ymir was still smirking at her, "You know I can't survive winter without nourishment!"
"What are you, a bear?!" Ymir giggled at Christa's pout, openly laughing when she noticed the discarded earmuffs were actually pandas.
The pair mindlessly chatted away whilst they waited, a couple more sirens audible in the distance but of no concern to the two ladies.
"Help!"
A shout from the kitchen of the café had both girls on their feet, the only other patrons were an elderly couple.
Ymir ducked under the counter and threw the door open, eyes going wide at the sight. Their waitress, Gabi, was being wrestled to the floor by what she supposed was the chef. A big man who looked to be in his forties. He had Gabi pinned and looked to be giving the young girl a hickey, or rather that's what it seemed from the angle Ymir was at.
"HEY! Get off her!" Ymir yelled as she got behind the guy and put him in a headlock to try pulling him away from the girl. "Christa go phone the police!" She yelled out the still open doors.
Christa obliged and ran back to the table to get her phone and dialled the emergencies.
"You motherfucker!" Christa held Ymir cursing and then what sounded like a howl came from the kitchen.
Ymir felt teeth dig in to her forearm. She cursed, trying to get herself away from this freak but he had rounded on her now, leaving Gabi on the floor sobbing.
Rolling out of the way she checked her arm, blood poured from the bite mark. The skin had been pierced pretty deep judging by the volume of blood and the surround had a nasty purple tinge like a bad bruise.
Grimacing with a pounding in her chest like never before she threw a right hook that connected to the man's jaw, sending him careening into a rack of dishes. They smashed all over him causing cuts and slashes but he didn't seem fazed.
Finally though, he was away from Gabi and Ymir caught sight of the poor girl. Lying in a pool of her own blood the girl's neck had a large gash that was spraying like a red fountain.
"Oh my God..." Ymir was frozen for a second but snapped back to the situation when the guy let out a howl, almost like an animal.
He made eye contact with Ymir and she could see his eyes had a glazed over almost white look to them. She scrambled back to her feet and wildly looked around the kitchen for anything that might help.
She dove to the corner where a fire extinguisher was sat. Hefting it into her arms she pointed the base of it at the man who was moving ever nearer.
"Fuck off or I'll smash your face!" Ymir was shaking but he wouldn't stop.
The chef reached for his next meal and as he did so Ymir let loose, One, Two, Three strikes with the metal extinguisher and he was down for good, head partially caved in.
"Christa...What have I done?" Ymir looked at her hands and dropped the fire extinguisher, speaking to herself.
Ymir felt sick to her stomach but that had to wait, Gabi was still on the floor.
She ran over, grabbing a dish cloth and pressed it hard against the young girl's neck.
"Don't worry, I've got you!" Ymir tried to reassure the girl and slowly lifted her to her feet, making sure to keep the pressure on her wound.
Gabi was brought out front where Christa just got off the phone, going pale at the sight of blood all over Ymir.
"What the fuck happened?!" Christa was horrified at the state of Gabi. The elderly couple had come over to help out though they moved like treacle.
Christa took over keeping a hold on Gabi as they sat her down and Ymir was tended to by the older man.
"Christa...I...I think I just killed someone..."
"It...Doesn't matter. It was self defence! Look at the state of her!" Christa was close to tears but she was going to be strong for her best friend.
"There that should hold till the ambulance gets here." Ymir thanked the old man for his help and sat back down next to Gabi and Christa with her head in her hands.
A few police cars with sirens blaring raced up the street, heading away from the middle of town.
The café inhabitants looked on incredulously as they all streamed past, until the last car pulled up roughly, obviously having slammed on his breaks but kept control on the snow.
A Police officer jumped out of the car and threw open the door to Rose Café.
"You all need to leave right now." He was a well built man with a neat undercut, he was drenched in sweat and what was possibly blood however and looked pretty haggard.
"Levi what the fuck are you doing! Get back in the car!" The man's radio sprang to life but he ignored it.
"Listen up! Oldies get in the car right now." The older pair nodded and stumbled out as fast as they could. "And you two ladies, I don't have room do you have transport nearby?".
Dumbfounded Christa just nodded, keeping the pressure up.
"There's three of us?" Ymir wasn't sure what the hell was going on at this point.
"Sorry to break it to you but that girl's a goner." Levi noticed as soon as he walked in the girl's chest wasn't moving and judging by the blood all over her she had been attacked like what he'd seen down town. Crazy fuckers practicing cannibalism.
"No she isn't!" Christa said, seeing Gabi open her eyes.
Almost instantly Gabi bared her teeth and lunged for Christa's neck.
"Holy fuck!" Christa cried out in surprise and then had to cover her ears as a gun was fired.
Levi had drawn his pistol and got a shot off before the girl could even move 3 inches. The bullet struck her in the chest sending her falling backwards.
"What did yo do!" Ymir yelled hysterically, verging on spewing right then and there.
"Saved your lives. Trust me we all need to go now. The streets aren't safe..." Levi ran his hand through his hair, it had been the worst of days. Riots, cannibals, killing...you name it. "...Something fucked up is going on, there's people attacking others for no fucking reason."
He glanced outside making sure his partner Zoe, was getting the oldies in the back of the car, they would need to squeeze up next to one of his men that had been attacked earlier. When he glanced back he almost had a heart attack.
The girl was back on her feet again, despite the shot through the chest, and was aiming for the taller girl this time.
"Shit! Move!"
Christa reacted first, diving into Ymir and clearing the way for the cop to take another shot.
The shot was clearer this time so he doubled down and aimed for the girl's head.
Firing once more he watched as the young girl's head opened up, spraying brains and blood all over the wall.
"Head shots only then...No wonder down town was so fucked..." He spoke to himself before looking to the girls on the ground one last time. "Good luck, I'm sorry I can't take you but get the fuck outta town". With that he left, jumping in the car and speeding off.
Christa openly bawled this time, laying atop Ymir on the cold floor of the café, watching as the blood from poor Gabi drained from her body.
"Christa" No response.
"Christa!" She jerked her head away from the gore and down to Ymir. "Let's go, we should follow his advice."
Nodding, Christa got up and helped Ymir off the ground.
"My car's closest I'll drive" Ymir took Christa by the hand and led her out the shop onto the deserted street and towards her little white car.
Howls echoed around them as Ymir unlocked the doors, the car beeping in response.
She jumped in the driver's seat whilst Christa slid around the side and got in. Just as Christa closed the door a bloody hand smacked against her window, causing both girls to jump in their seats.
"Ymir what's happening?" Christa shivered in her seat, warm jacket and panda muffs left forgotten in the café.
"Zombi-" Ymir began, starting the car and pulling out the space only to be met with one or two more people rushing towards them.
"Don't say Zombies they aren't real!" Christa cried, catching the dead white eyes of the thing right outside her window. "Ymir go go go!".
Ymir obliged and put her foot down, leaving the not-zombies in the snow. A fresh blanket coming down around them as she drove like a bat out of hell. Smoke billowing from traffic collisions and burning buildings visible in her rear view mirror.
