Hiccup found himself in what appeared to be a massive feast hall, in fact, it looks like the same one that he witnessed in Helheim, sitting in a chair. For a brief moment, he was afraid that he had died and was now the personal property of Hel.
"Relax my boy, you're very much alive," said a voice behind him.
Hiccup looked up and saw standing there was Tahorn approaching him with an old smile. Hiccup was now even more confused he was standing in the feasting hall of Asgard and standing in front of him was a Dark Elf hermit, something was clearly off.
"Who are you?" Hiccup asked.
Tahorn smiled and then suddenly he began to grow until he was about 7 foot tall, a barrel-chested man with massive arms. He had close-cropped grey hair, while his beard is cut square, to accentuate his hardened, weathered face. However, the thing that sets him apart was the eyepatch that he wore over his left eye while his right eye was a deep dark blue.
"Odin?" Hiccup stared.
"My eyepatch gave it away, didn't it?" Odin chuckled.
"Wait, you were Tahorn?" Hiccup stared. "But you healed Ragnar and Fishlegs, I thought gods were supposed to interfere in mortal quests."
"The rule which can't be broken can be bent," Odin smiled mysteriously. "I reveal myself to you or your friends so technically you weren't getting the assistance of a god. Additionally, the only thing I did was heal your friends which is a somewhat grey area."
"I'm shocked that Snotlout didn't realise you were the hermit that helped us?"
"I'm good when it comes to disguises in between you and me my son has yet to inherit my affinity of wisdom, but I suspect that you're more curious on why I brought you here."
"I'm guessing has something to do with the wisdom I acquired?" Hiccup guessed.
"Yes, I imagine that it is quite overwhelming," Odin assumed.
Hiccup had to admit now that everything had calmed down he was now receiving a massive headache and it was only getting worse. Odin then touched the centre of his forehead, and his finger glowed and almost instantly, his headache vanished.
"That should give you some breathing space until you can handle the burden that has been placed on you," said Odin.
"I still don't understand why I gained the wisdom," said Hiccup. "All I did was sliced off my own leg to save Astrid."
"You are willing to make a sacrifice for someone who cared for, and the Eye responded to that."
Hiccup shook his head, confused. "But it was nothing like what you gave up, I can easily get a prosthetic to replace my leg you lost your eye forever."
"True, but you still showed wisdom and a lot of courage, something which Johann lacks," Odin explained. "You saw no other option than to sever your own leg and attempt to save your friends. Not many people would make such a sacrifice as Johann attested too."
Hiccup leaned back trying to process all this. "There was no other option if I hadn't done it Astrid would be dead."
"It would have been worthless, no amount of blood sacrifice would have given the eye up its wisdom. Johann's plan was doomed to fail, and we would have lost a brave warrior, who has a role to play in the future battle."
"Ragnarok?" Hiccup assumed.
"Possibly, assuming that you survive what is to come."
Hiccup didn't like where this was going. "You're saying that there is going to be a conflict before Ragnarok?"
"Yes, and determining on the actions of you and your friends Ragnarok were either be upon us or be delayed several centuries. However, the future is still uncertain, at least according to your mother."
Hiccup had briefly forgotten that his mother, Frigg, is Odin's wife making his stepfather.
"Frigg always did have good taste in men," Odin chuckled as if reading his mind. "Sometimes a rather envious with the children she produces. They always seem to appear in great turmoil and always restore order. It was one of these children that advised Henry VII to marry Elizabeth of York that uniting both the house of York and Lancaster effectively stopping the ongoing feud between both houses. Another managed to restore the English monarchy after it was ousted after the Civil War."
"That's certainly not in the history books," said Hiccup.
Odin chuckled. "Many of your siblings are never in the history books, like your mother they always work in the shadows trying to unite families and maintaining order. The British monarchy has always taken heavy hits, but it always recovers have you ever wondered why with so many other monarchies being abolished?"
Hiccup had to admit that it was rather a good question, Britain had one of the oldest monarchs in Europe. Throughout history that always been turmoil war succession after Henry I died, the War the Roses, the English Civil War, the ousting of James II and of course the abdication of Edward VIII.
"We've been protecting it," said Hiccup stunned.
"Very good, Johann told you about the King Midgard, right?" Odin asked.
"Yes, he wanted to prevent me from becoming king?"
"What he does not realise is that there is already a King of Midgard or rather I would say, Queen."
Hiccup's eyes widened. "You're saying the Queen rules over Midgard?"
"The Queen's heritage goes further back than William the Conqueror you know, she's also related to Alfred the Great and going back further to Charlemagne, therefore, touching a vast amount of Europe. The Queen's ancestors have touched and influenced everyone around the world, did you not think that was a coincidence?"
"Ragnar mentioned that the Norse Gods were more active in Britain, influencing its ability to trade to multiple countries as the Vikings did."
"And they have also attacked multiple lands performing raids, stealing treasures all of which links bank to their Viking ancestry."
"But multiple countries did that France… Spain…" Hiccup pointed out.
"And how many of them were as successful as Britain?" Odin asked. "Spain tried to conquer England with a massive armada, but it was destroyed. France had an absolute monarchy, but they're right in the divine right is what brought them down as did multiple monarchies like Germany and Russia. The only a handful of stable monarchies in Europe today have survived while others have perished. The Academy has stood guard over the British monarchy making sure that it survives, help it to adapt to the modern times."
"But Johann knows nothing of this?" said Hiccup.
"You're forgetting that he was born before William the Conqueror conquered England, back then it was a selected champion of the gods, but that all changed when my son conquered England."
"Wait, William the Conqueror is your son?" Hiccup stared bewildered.
Odin nodded. "Does that really surprise you?"
"But why did you support the King of Norway when he invaded?" Hiccup asked, confused. "I mean he was a Viking king?"
"Back then the Vikings started to convert to Christianity so it really did make any difference and deliberately honest we don't really care if mortals worship us or not. However, I saw something special within William, so I named him King of Midgard. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that he managed to conquer England, becoming the first Norman King and creating a royal line that carries on to this day."
"So why hasn't Loki told Johann any of this?" Hiccup frowned.
"I don't know," said Odin honestly. "I can never seem to figure Loki out, but it could be that he sees you as a danger."
"He has talked to me several times," Hiccup admitted. "But I only believe half of what he's saying."
"A wise precaution," Odin nodded. "Loki lies everyone, including his children, but there is a reason behind everything that he does. I believe that he wishes to wipe the Academy off the map to make it even harder for us to protect the monarchy. Things are precarious in this day of age alone, there was a time when there are more monarchies and republics, but after the World Wars the opposite is now true."
"Does the Queen know any of this?" Hiccup asked.
"Naturally, she does, and she is rather concerned with everything that has been happening recently."
"So, what happens now?" Hiccup asked.
"Loki will no doubt have other plans in the works so you and your friends must stay vigilant," said Odin. "You also need to begin work to try to unite the Academy as an attack will be coming, though when I am not so certain."
"The trying to unite with House Loki is next to impossible," Hiccup pointed out.
Odin gave him a gentle smile. "Nothing is impossible as long as you believe it is. Now I believe it's time for you to return to your friends, I believe they are quite worried about you."
Hiccup wanted asking more questions, but somehow he knew that any answer he would receive would be met with even more questions. Even as he thought it, everything around them began to fade.
Hiccup woke up and found himself in the infirmary in the Academy, which led to the question on how he got here and how long had he been out.
"Look who's awake," said a voice beside him.
Hiccup turned his head and saw sitting next to him was Ragnar. "Ragnar?"
"You gave us quite a scare," said Ragnar. Hiccup sat up, only to be stopped by Ragnar. "Don't move, you're still recovering."
"What happened?" Hiccup asked as he laid back down.
"Well, that's going to take some explaining," said Ragnar.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Ragnar then began to explain how he had managed to close Hiccup's wound with his healing magic. After which they had to find a portal that would take them back to Midgard, this time a more instantaneous route.
He also went on to explain that Queen Briar managed to use the incident and the willingness to crush the reputation of the Purists. The fact they were willing to work alongside a human and orcs practically destroyed their master race image.
"That was the week ago," said Ragnar.
"You mean I've been in bed for a week?" Hiccup stared.
"You had lost a lot of blood, we thought we were going to lose one point."
"So what are you doing back here in the Academy?" Hiccup asked curiously. "I mean, don't you have another secret mission to go on?"
"We got no idea where Johann is now, and you were the main priority. Besides, our main mission was to make sure that he did not gain the wisdom from the Eye of Odin and thanks to you, he didn't accomplish that. Speaking of which what is it like having the knowledge of the entire universe in your brain?"
"A headache," said Hiccup honestly.
"Somehow, I find it surprising."
"I don't know how else to explain it, but it's like my brain is an entire Cyclopedia. I want the finest certain subject I have to go through all the pages, and less than half of it makes any sense."
"I suspect it will be easier within time," Ragnar shrugged.
"That's what Odin said," said Hiccup and mentally facepalm himself.
"Wait, you spoke with Odin?" Ragnar stared.
Hiccup now had no choice but to tell Ragnar's entire conversation with Odin, especially with the whole thing of protecting the Royal family.
"So the Queen is the Queen of Midgard, I have to say pretty shocked," said Ragnar.
"You mean you didn't know?" said Hiccup looking rather surprised.
Ragnar had been on Midgard since the Victorian period, he was also Mimir's right-hand man, so Hiccup was somewhat surprised he didn't know any of this.
"No, but it's now starting to make sense," said Ragnar rubbing his chin. "I've been on several missions, and some of them involved trying to protect the Royal family, there are several attempts on Queen Victoria's life, and I was there with Mimir when he gave advice to George V on how to become more down to earth. Even the Queen is not safe, a man broke into her room in the 80s, and someone tried to assassinate her. Not to mention the other attacks on the Royal family."
"Do you think we should tell the others?" Hiccup asked.
Ragnar shook his head. "We should keep this to ourselves, for the time being, this is a well-kept secret and the need to stay as such. Though I will confront Mimir on this."
Hiccup sighed as he rested his head on his pillow. "I wonder I can go with one year in the Academy without going on a deadly quest?"
"I wouldn't count on it," Ragnar smiled and then his eyes looked over Hiccup. "Ah, I think it's time for me to take my leave, remember what we talked about."
Hiccup frowned and turned his head and saw entering the infirmary was Astrid. She just stood there looking at him. Obviously, she hadn't expected him to wake up.
"Good luck," said Ragnar as he left.
Hiccup wasn't entirely sure whether that he was talking to him or Astrid, but no sooner had the left that Astrid slowly made her way towards him. She looked down at him without saying a word, and then she hit him in the right shoulder.
"Ow!" Hiccup yelled, clutching his shoulder.
"That was scaring me!" she said.
Hiccup was getting sick and tired of getting hit by Astrid, especially when he was supposed to be healing. "It is always going to be like this, because…"
Astrid interrupted him by kissing him on the lips, and it felt as if his brain had melted in his skull. It wasn't a long kiss, but it was long enough for Hiccup to forget his name.
"I guess I can get used to it," he shrugged.
Astrid shook her head and sat next to him. "What gave you the crazy idea to cut off your leg to save me?"
"Because it was the only way to save you," he said simply.
"It's my fault, I should have been more on alert."
"Now don't go blaming yourself, I'm the one who can see into the future remember."
"And we had someone with super hearing and super sight," Astrid reminded him.
That was actually a good point, no matter how stealthy they were fishing been able to get the drop on Heather. "How did she not noticed their advance?"
"She says that there were a lot of animal noises in the woods and the thick trees hit them from her sight," Astrid explained. "She admits she probably would have been able to see their advance if she was on higher ground, but the time will be more concerned about you."
Hiccup was entirely sure whether he bought that explanation and he remembered what Loki had said about Heather betraying them. Though there had been the case, she would have had plenty of opportunities to do so.
"Anything else I should know about?" Hiccup asked.
"Nothing out of the ordinary," Astrid shrugged. "Though Gobber is busy making a new prosthetic for you."
Hiccup then suddenly remembered his dad and can only imagine his reaction when he discovered that he came home with one less leg. "How am I going to explain this to my dad?"
"Mimir is already on it," Astrid assured him. "Hopefully by the time you see me again he'll have calmed down."
"This is my dad we're talking about," Hiccup pointed out. "He can be extremely stubborn sometimes."
Astrid raised an eyebrow. "Stubbornness seems to run through the family."
Hiccup chose to ignore her comment. "And he's overprotective."
"I'm sure it will be fine," Astrid assured him. "Now I suggest that you get some rest, you've certainly earned it."
Astrid then kissed him on the cheek and left the infirmary.
Hiccup had millions of questions in his head, but he decided to follow Astrid's advice and get some rest. There was no telling what was going to happen over the next few years, but he had a feeling that there'll be little time for rest.
