Hey, just a quick note and another small chapter before the next long one.
I hope I can say this without sounding too know-it-all, but I've had a review saying that most authors use "" for speech marks and ' ' for thoughts etc and that my formatting is therefore wrong.
I'm a bit of a grammar nerd so this sort of upset me. Using quotation marks is a varied practice, however the format I use is also correct and is, as far as I can figure, more commonly used.
We use double quotation for someone saying something in the past tense, relative to the story. ie,
'Why are you here?'
'You said "come at three," didn't you?'
or
'What did our neighbour always say?'
'"Get off my lawn?"'
'No.'
'Oh! "Turn that music down before you lose an aux!" Classic.'
In fact, it's likely that if you opened a few nearby novels, some of them will follow " " and others ' '. These are both correct. Around me are;
" " - The Inheritance Cycle, Christopher Paolini
4.50 from Paddington, Agatha Christie
' ' - Harry Potter, J K Rowling
The French Lieutenant's Woman, John Fowles
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
If Only They Could Talk, James Herriot
Watership Down, Richard Adams
There's also an old format (Handmaid's Tale old) that doesn't use speech marks at all, which drives me mad.
I didn't expect to get this riled up about it but it bugged me to receive this review as I know my formatting of speech is correct.
Sorry guys, I just felt like I had to say this.
Also, Thank you for your support for this story! I'm amazed by how many reviews actually analyse and note on little pieces in here, like Bruce's arm. It really amazes me to have readers that read with eagle eyes and pick up on these things, and then comment on them to discuss. I'm always up for talking about these things, so don't hesitate!
'Nice suit,' said Batman, 'Thunder?'
'You bet.'
'This is Gordon's house?'
'This is the one,' I replied, and we sat down, waiting for him to come outside. When he did, he saw us and shut the door.
'Storm's coming.'
I chuckled barely noticeably at Bruce's remark.
'Who are you?' asked Jim Gordon.
'Thunder,' I said, voice low and smooth.
'Thunder it is, then,' quipped Jim, and nodded a greeting at the Batman. 'The scum is getting jumpy because you stood up to Falcone.'
'It's a start. Your partner was at the docks with Falcone.' Bruce was crouching on the stair railings.
'He told Falcone to bail,' I added, sitting on the steps below.
'Well, he moonlights as a low-level enforcer,' Jim sighed.
'They were splitting the shipment in two. Only half went to the dealers.'
Jim looked up at Batman. 'Why? What about the other half?'
'Flass knows,' I said.
'He won't talk.'
'Ha!' I murmured.
'He'll talk to us,' gruffed Batman.
'Commissioner Loeb set up a massive task force to catch you. He thinks you're dangerous.'
'What do you think?' We both considered him.
He looked over the rooftops and we tensed. 'I think you're trying to help.'
By the time he looked back, we were gone.
'Good to know you're not trying to shove me on the backburner,' I said.
'I have a feeling I'd get taken down if I did.'
'Flass?'
'He'll be on patrol.'
'Walking through streets pretending to be, you mean?' I asked.
'That seems more likely.'
We found him soon enough and waited on the outside stairs of a block building. He walked underneath us with falafel and I sprung the trap. He yelled as he flew up into the air.
'Evening,' I said bluntly when he came to a halt in front of us.
'Where were the other drugs going?!' demanded Batman, at the upside down Flass.
'I never knew. I don't know. I swear to God!'
'Swear to us!'
I let the cable slip through my fingers, ignoring the rain. He screamed as he went down. I stopped him just before he'd hit the ground, and pulled him back up again, wincing at his poor control. He'd pull a muscle if he continued thrashing around like that.
'I don't- I don't know. I never knew. Never! They-they went to some guy for a couple days
before they went to the dealers.'
'Why?' yelled Batman, grabbing his hair.
'There was something- Something else in the drugs. . ..something hidden.'
'What?!' we both growled.
'I never went to the drop-off point. It was in the Narrows. Cops only go there in force.'
'Do we look like cops?' Batman asked.
Deadpan, I opened my hand and let the cable slip through it.
'No-!' he yelled.
Annoyed, I stopped him just before he hit the ground and dropped him safely.
By the time he'd opened his eyes, we'd gone.
'We should tell Jim Gordon to hang Fass upside down next time he won't cooperate.'
'Hm! He'd appreciate that.'
'So, to the Narrows,' I sighed.
'You don't have to co-,'
'Oi.'
He shrugged, something that looked unnervingly "Bruce" for the Batsuit.
