Kavaraa walked up to Kormel's door but paused before knocking, she wasn't sure how to approach this Kormel hadn't been to Tatooine in years and he had hardly spoken to her since he found out. To be fair that was pretty normal for him, Kormel seemed like a quiet person but she was worried it was more than that she thought back to when she went back to house Thul. She hadn't been ready for it back then, she nearly let her anger get the better of her Kavaraa imagined her path would have been a lot different if he had lost it that day. Still Kormel was so reserved Kavaraa had no idea how he was going to react to Mos Espa let alone how he help find the temple, maybe she was reading into it too much he said it was a long time ago.
As Kavaraa hung outside the door pondering these questions it suddenly slid open causing her to jump back in fright as Kormel came out of the room
he frowned at Kavaraa "Um master what are you doing?" Kavaraa did her best to look professional
"oh uh i was just coming to see you" she looked away awkwardly "um i was just a little worried since this is uh ya know your home planet" well that's one way of telling him they had arrived
Kormel looked away "well uh I can't say I'm looking forward to it but ya know there are more important things than my nervousness" Kavaraa was impressed he was doing well at separating himself from the mission
Kavaraa smiled "well uh that's good cause we've arrived in Mos Espa" Kavaraa saw Kormel's expression drop when she said 'Mos Espa' "oh uh is this?"
Kormel answered quietly "my home town yeah" damn it she knew they should've gone somewhere else it was just so convenient to land here.
Kavaraa stuttered "um sorry I uh didn't know I went through something similar on Alderann I know it's tough" Kormel nodded looking away from her, she didn't want to put Kormel through this facing the past was always tough
"it's ok I was kinda expecting it I think I'm prepared" Kavaraa smiled he seemed ready at least like he'd mentally prepared himself for it.
She gestured for Kormel to follow leading them out to meet Theron, they had arrived on Tatooine towards the end of the twin suns day cycle so would have to wait until tomorrow to actually search in the wastes. Theron had suggested going to a cantina just mainly to have a break and Kavaraa had to admit they had been going pretty full on for weeks, they made their way across town to a bar Theron had 'apparently' gone to years ago and was quote 'the best cantina on Tatooine'.
While Theron was searching for it Kavaraa noticed Kormel stop behind her, she turned to see him staring at a large building not moving.
Kavaraa walked up to him "um Kormel? are you ok?" after a few seconds Kormel broke out of his daze
he turned to Kavaraa "this is it this is the cantina where my dad worked" Kavaraa gasped she had to be careful here Kormel could be going through so much right now
Kavaraa put a hand on his shoulder "Kormel we can leave if you want dealing with this stuff can be tough" Kavaraa once again was reminded of House Thul but that wasn't nearly as bad as this.
Kormel shook his head "no actually I want to go in, uh see if it's the same as I remember" Kavaraa wasn't sure he should do that and gave him a worried look "don't worry Kavaraa I'm ok I promise." Kavaraa was about to press it but thought she had to trust him.
Kavaraa conceded "alright but I'm gonna be right there with you I know what it's like to face this" Kormel nodded as Kavaraa gestured for Theron to follow her
Theron sulked "I would've found it in another 5 minutes" bless him he could never find things in the ship either
Kavaraa smiled "oh yeah sure it took you three years to find me I give that bar a few days" Theron continued to sulk as they walked into the cantina, the scene was surprisingly, bright full of life it seemed very respectful some would say high class. Kavaraa turned back to Kormel "uh is this like you remember" Kormel had a bemused look on his face
Kormel chuckled "not in the slightest it's so much brighter I can see my hands when I hold them up" Kavaraa was confused he seemed to be enjoying it she thought this place would bring back bad memories. She supposed with the extensive refurbishments it probably was like a new place, they made their way up to the bar Kormel tried to get the attention of the bartender and after about 5 minutes he turned to them
Bartender smiled "sorry about that my fellow I didn't see you there" Kavaraa was not expecting this at all
Kormel stammered "u-uh hey I w-was just wondering I haven't been here in a while has this p-place been refurbished it looks so clean" the bartender stroked his chin
"um maybe a while back the place was closed for a bit due to illegal activities and then my boss bought it to make it into this fancy joint" Kormel nodded seemingly taken aback
he turned to Kavaraa and Theron "I guess there is some justice here" Kavaraa smiled as Theron ordered them all a round. They sat in the bar and relaxed for a little while, Kavaraa didn't remember the last time she did this everything had been so full on lately it was nice to sit back in the company of friends. After everything that had happened with Kyradia she was trying her best to keep her friends close maybe things weren't so bad.
After the drink Kormel asked if they could leave he had seemingly seen what he wanted to and they got up to leave.
While leaving a Duros waiter bumped into Kormel and promptly apologised "sorry sir I do apologise I uh should be more careful" Kormel was stood there stunned Kavaraa had no idea why but he looked like he'd just seen a ghost
Kormel stammered "um have we met before?" the Duros squinted at him
he looked around uncomfortably "uh I don't think so I need to get back to my shift" Kavaraa frowned this seemed bad did Kormel know this guy
Kormel continued "maybe you've met my friend Jactren Hartful" that was his surname, Kavaraa thought she should intervene if this went any further
the Duros frowned "I uh I don't think so" he shuffled off quickly before Kormel could say anything else.
Kavaraa tried to walk over to Kormel but he left the cantina without a word, she did her best to catch up once there was no crowd seeing Kormel staring off into the night "Kormel are you ok? what was that about?" Kormel seemed to notice she was there but didn't turn around
Kormel sighed and quietly said "that man killed my dad" Kavaraa gasped oh god that was terrible "and it's not even that I saw him again after all this time that made me mad" he paused composing himself "it's the fact he didn't even remember his name my dad was just another person in his way" he turned to face Kavaraa she could see tears welling up in his eyes
Kavaraa took his hand "Kormel I'm so sorry that must've been awful to go through I know how you feel" Kavaraa wanted to help but she had no idea how to
Kormel sighed "no no you don't" he kicked at the sand as he spoke
Kavaraa shook her head "no trust me I do my parents died when I was young I understan-" before Kavaraa could finish Kormel interrupted her
"NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND KAVARAA YOU JUST DON'T" Kormel shouted "I knew my dad for 7 years I remember who he was, the guy who would sometimes overcharge for drinks for the drunks hoping they wouldn't notice to give me some extra money for parts to fix up my terrible swoop bike. The guy who no matter what went down at work would always be there to cook dinner, he taught me how to be a good person and is the reason I didn't give up on this damn quest. He was the best person I knew and you didn't even know your parents you couldn't possibly know what I'm going through so stop trying to act like you do." Kavaraa was completely shocked she had never seen Kormel this angry or even this emotional
Kavaraa didn't know what to say "It's not like that Kormel" tears were streaking down Kormel's face
"tell me ONE thing specific about your parents and then I might believe you" Kavaraa stammered trying her best to think of something "yeah that's what I thought" Kormel turned and walked away into the night
Kavaraa stood there stunned she felt angry but also she knew he was right she had been trying to apply her situation to him to make him feel better it looked like it'd just frustrated him though.
She saw Theron exit the bar seconds later looking worried "hey I heard shouting are you ok" Kavaraa felt the guilt well up inside her, she hugged Theron tightly as she could trying her best not to cry "hey it's ok I'm uh sure whatever it was was uh nothing" she felt like such a failure she'd been pushing Kormel away and she didn't even know it
Kavaraa took a deep breath "Theron am I a bad teacher?" maybe she'd just got lucky with Nadia to be fair Nadia had done most of it on her own, was she even ready to take on a new padawan did she make a mistake.
Theron did her best to comfort her "I don't think so sweetie I think you just rush into things you kinda get overexcited and ya know go for it without thinking of the consequences" she guessed Theron had a point this whole trip was on a whim
Kavaraa wiped her eyes "I upset Kormel Theron" Theron nodded sympathetically he didn't look too surprised which made her worried she'd been really obvious about it "what do I do I messed it up"
Theron put a hand on her shoulder "honestly just level with him don't act like the Jedi Basen'thor, act like the awkward doofus I fell in love with that side of you is a lot less intimidating and well impulsive" Kavaraa nodded maybe she did give off the wrong impression she'd been trying so hard to be the Jedi Basen'thor and she wasn't even really a proper jedi anymore.
Kavaraa let herself calm down "thanks Theron I really needed that" Kavaraa looked around "I'm uh gonna go find Kormel" Theron nodded she really had the best husband ever
later…
it took a little while but eventually Kavaraa found a small workshop on the outskirts of Mos Espa where she sensed Kormel. She could see the lights were on and she crept up to see Kormel working on a swoop bike, it looked about a quarter done and very dusty lets hope this was more therapeutic than functional.
Kormel looked up to see her and as soon as he did he almost shrunk down "um hi" he looked guilty but he shouldn't feel that way he had a point
Kavaraa perched herself on a table "whatcha working on" she was told to be the awkward doofus so she would be
Kormel gestured "uh bike" as he put a hand on it a large cloud of dust flew out of the engine, Kavaraa gave him a raised eyebrow "I told you it was terrible it's still only like a quarter done" Kavaraa chuckled at least he had a hobby. Kormel looked at her the regret clear on his face "I'm sorry, I was angry and I took it out on you that was wrong" he seemed to be a little more confident now he'd let that out but still seemed nervous
Kavaraa sighed "no Kormel you were right I was trying to apply my situation to yours it must've sucked" Kormel shyly nodded "can I tell you something Kormel" he repeated the motion "90% of the time I don't really know what I'm doing I'm just hoping I can do what I can to help the galaxy" Kormel looked surprised "I may be the Jedi Basen'thor but a lot of the time I don't feel like I deserve it, we all make mistakes and I've made my fair share. I'm impulsive, stubborn and really have to try to control my anger I'm just like everyone else please don't think I'm some jedi gospel because I'm not. We all don't know what we're doing but as long as we try our best we can at least say we tried and where's the harm in that"
Kormel smiled "that's reassuring I'm just so worried I'm going to mess up and I won't be worthy" Kavaraa got up and gave him a big hug
a few seconds later she let go "we all make mistakes Kormel it's how we learn from them that counts and I think you'd learn the right things considering how much you think about it" they both chuckled in the garage Kavaraa was so pleased Kormel wasn't mad she really needed this right now. She looked to the bike "hey Kormel how about we take this back with us you can fix it up in the ship" Kormel's eyes lit up
"really Theron won't be mad?" Kormel said excitedly
Kavaraa folded her arms "it's my ship you think he has a say" Kormel chuckled she hoped Kormel felt more comfortable around her now she just worried she'd alienated other people with her Basen'thor act…
