The school year officially started with the normal flurry of activities and both Rory and Logan worked to prioritize time together. Rory would often accompany Logan to the pub and where she would laugh at Colin and Finn's antics, but she found the female attention Logan received unsettling and while she trusted him, she often found herself wondering if she was enough for him. While they had officially been dating for a little over a month, she wasn't ready to have sex, but they did other things, and he didn't pressure her for more. Logan seemed to sense her insecurities and would do little things for her to let her know that she was all he wanted from coffee in the morning or meeting her after classes. For all of Logan's concerns that he didn't know how to be a boyfriend, he effortlessly settled into the role. On evenings, the couple didn't go to the pub Rory would occasionally cook for him, she had told him all about her mother's aversion for anything healthy and inability to cook anything. After Rory had started spending more time with the Hayden's she had become close to their cook who had been there for years. Louisa took time and taught Rory how to make basic items and over they years Rory had leaned more and while she was nowhere near a gourmet chef, she was good and could cook a variety of things. Rory was starting to learn Logan's favorite foods and liked to surprise him with a home cooked meal and they found they actually enjoyed cooking together. She was also amazed at how easy the relationship was, for the first time she didn't feel like she needed to change herself to be with a guy. Logan accepted her and she accepted him, outside the bubble of summer they were getting closer and learning more about each other each day.
Logan was sitting on the couch in her apartment and while he didn't technically live there, he spent almost every night with her. They had gotten into a routine of running in the morning and then Logan would lift weights in the apartments gym and Rory would do yoga or Pilates, and he had to admit she was more of a distraction to him when they worked out, then they would drink coffee, go to classes and in Rory's case go to the paper. This studious side of Rory was something he would have never thought he would find attractive but watching her as she bit her lower lip when she concentrated or how she would sometimes hum songs or mutter to herself we adorable and to him incredibly sexy. He wasn't at all surprised to discover that she was dual majoring in Business and Journalism. They were sitting in her apartment one evening and Rory was curled up against the edge of the couch reading a book for her journalism class, dressed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and he couldn't help but stare at her legs. While she read through the text, he was reading her old articles and he had to admit she had a way with words.
"Hey Ace," he smirked at looked at her. He chuckled as her eyes came back into focus on him and came back to the real world. "These are really good. You have a way with words."
"Ace?" she questioned unsure if she had heard him correctly.
"Yeah," he smirked and leaned towards her and placed a small kiss on her lips. "That what I'm going to call you for now on."
"Why?" she questioned as she studied him.
"You're the smart one," he replied with a smirk and got up to go into the kitchen. "You figure it out."
"Ace reporter!" she exclaimed as she turned to look at him with a smile.
"See I knew you were smart. Do you want a drink?" he asked as he grabbed a beer out of the fridge.
"Coffee," she replied. "There is still some in the pot."
He poured her a cup and added a little milk and spoonful of sugar just how she liked it. "Here you go," he told her.
She moaned as she took a sip. "Perfect," she told him with a smile. "Now I need to come up with a nickname for you," she replied with a thoughtful look.
"Master and Commander," he told her with a smirk.
"The movie?" she asked with a slightly confused look.
He gave her a devilish grin and took the coffee from her and set it on the table. "No that's what I want you to call me for now on," he murmured against her lips and then gave her a passionate kiss.
"Your ego does not need to get any bigger," she retorted when they pulled apart.
"Um hmm," he smiled and kissed her again. "You know you love my cockiness."
"Sure," she replied rolling her eyes and he moved to start tickling her. "Stop," she whined as she started laughing and tried to move away from him, but he held firm and she dissolved into giggles and soon tears were pouring from her eyes. "Please," she managed to get out between giggles.
"Please who?" he teased as he continued his assault.
"Cocky ass," she squealed as he continued the attack, "miscreant!" she tried again, and he moved to pin her down. "Fine!" she finally relented with a giggle. "Master and Commander."
He stopped tickling her but stayed where he was on top of her. "That wasn't so hard now was it?" he whispered huskily as he admired her flushed cheeks.
She pressed her leg up slightly into his erection, "something else it pretty hard," she whispered as she moved her hand down to rub against him.
"Rory," he moaned as he buried his head in her neck and started kissing and sucking there while his hands trailed up her shirt to feel her warm soft skin. The make-out session became even more heated and he removed her shirt and groaned at seeing her without a bra. He immediately attached his lips to her breast and started sucking and nibbling her moans fueling him even more. She removed his shirt and was working on taking off his pants when someone started knocking on the door. They tried to ignore it, but it continued.
"Mate!" they heard Finn yell. "I know you're in there!"
"He has the worst timing," Logan groaned not wanting to get up. He looked at her flushed cheeks and chest and groaned again when the knocking continued. "I'm going to kill him," he muttered as he moved off her and pulled his shirt back on and she moved to do the same.
"How did he even get up here?" Rory sighed as she ran her fingers through her hair. "I don't remember adding him to the authorized visitor list."
"It's Finn," Logan sighed as he opened the door. "What do you want?" he asked his Australian friend a glare fixed on his face.
"I need help," Finn stated as she pushed past Logan into the apartment. When he saw Rory, he let out a low whistle and turned back to Logan. "I see why you look so mad now. I hope I wasn't interrupting," he stated in an innocent tone what caused both Rory and Logan to glare at him.
"What do you need help with Finn?" Rory sighed as she picked up her coffee and took a sip.
"Well…" Finn started and focused on Logan and mouthed LDB. "Guy talk Love."
"K," Rory said as she stood up. "I'm going to study in the office."
"No," Logan sighed as he moved over to kiss her. "We will head to the pub and I'll come back with dinner."
"Sounds good," she sighed as she kissed him again. "You boys have fun."
"Bye love," Finn told her as Logan shoved him out the door.
Soon the boys were settled into a booth in their favorite pub waiting for Colin to show up.
"What's up?" Colin asked as he slid in next to Finn.
"Well," Finn sighed but paused when the waitress returned with glasses of scotch for each of them and gave Logan a flirtatious wink that Logan ignored. When she walked off Finn started talking again. "I talked to Harrison about the even for tomorrow night. He has a problem with Rory coming because he issued the invite to her last year, but she told them she wasn't interested."
"Seriously," Logan asked with a raised eyebrow and took a sip of his drink.
"Yeah so the option is to go tomorrow and get more members on board with reissuing the invite and then she can be initiated," Finn told them wearily already knowing that Logan would not be happy about this development.
Colin sighed and took a sip of his own drink. "And some of the girls are not happy with her attending because of you. I think some hope that if she isn't there you may slip up…"
"That is not going to happen," Logan growled. "I am not risking what I have with her for some random one-night."
"We know," Colin answered. "But these girls… they are pissed that she jumped the line."
"There was no line," Logan sighed, and his friends let out a scoff. "Okay maybe they thought there was one," he relented. "But that was before I met her."
The guys continued to talk about the problems with getting Rory initiated and tried to figure out who they could get on their side. After hearing that she was invited last year and didn't accept it would make things trickier.
The next night Rory sat in a dorm listening to her source drone on about illegal downloading and she tried to stay engaged but it was hard. Finally, not being able to take much more she went to the bathroom and encountered a blonde that looked slightly familiar to her dressed in a ballgown and had a gorilla mask. She followed the girl out and watched as she got into a SUV yelling "In omnia paratus!" and Rory was intrigued. Abandoning the music story, she headed back to the YDN archives and started researching, stumbling across the Life and Death Brigade and a connection to the Hutzbergers. Well this is interesting she thought to herself. She soon discovered that not a lot was written on this society, but it seemed that the Gilmores were a part of it at one time as well as the McCrea's. I wonder if this is where Logan is tonight when he said he was going out with the boys… She printed out all she had found along with her notes and headed back to her apartment. As she got ready for bed, she left out all the research on the coffee table to confront Logan with the next day.
Logan woke up the following morning with a headache. He hadn't drank a lot the previous night, he needed to be sober while trying to convince other senior members of the LDB to reissue the invite to Rory and also fending off the advances of women hoping to get him to cheat. Colin was right, these women were not happy about Logan's new taken status and especially not by someone like Rory who was the complete opposite of everyone he had been with in the past.
Getting up he grabbed his phone asking Rory if she wanted to grab lunch and when she said yes, he jumped into the shower to get ready. A little over an hour later he was knocking on her door and when she opened it, he immediately noticed that she looked upset.
He placed a soft kiss on her lips and then pulled back to study her. "Is everything okay?" he asked.
"Where were you last night?" Rory asked and then sighed. "That came out harsher than I meant," she said as she noticed the hurt flash in his eyes. Pulling him into the apartment and closing the door she walked over to the couch and paced slightly, and he studied her. "I know you were going out with the guys… and I trust you I just…" She paused and when she looked at him, she could see his confusion, but she didn't know how to talk to him about this. "In omnia paratus," she stated as she looked at him and saw the surprise flicker in his eyes.
He moved over to the couch and sank down studying her and she gestured to the papers she had on the table.
"I was working on my story last night and went to the bathroom where I was a blonde in a ballgown carrying a gorilla mask. I followed her, cause you know I'm curious and she got into a SUV that looked a lot like Finn's and yelled in omnia paratus before she was told to be quiet by a voice that sounded like Colins and pulled into the vehicle." Rory sighed and sank down next to him angling her body to look at him. "So, I did research and found the Life and Death Brigade that has connections to both the Gilmore's and the Huntzbergers. I know it's a secret society and you aren't supposed to talk about it. I guess I'm… I'm just hurt that you kept this from me."
Logan studied her and saw the confusion and hurt in her eyes. "I didn't want to," he sighed as he ran his hands over his face and took a deep breath. "I was trying to get you in, I was surprised you weren't already a member but then we found out you didn't accept the invite last year it made things difficult so Colin, Finn and I were trying to convince the other senior members to reissue the invitation. I didn't want to keep this from you…"
"What do you mean I was invited last year?" Rory interrupted confused at what he was saying.
He studied her for a moment and saw the confusion in her eyes. "The guy who was in charge of sending out the induction invites last year said one was extended to you, but you didn't show to the designated location for the kick-off event and when he approached you later, you told him you weren't interested."
She shook her head, "I never got invited to be a part of a secret society last year and no one approached me about it either."
Logan pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and scrolled through some pictures to find one of Harrison. "You never met this guy last year?" he asked as he handed her his phone.
Studying the picture for a moment Rory tried to place where he looked familiar from before she started laughing. Logan gave her a confused look and she tried to control the laughter and took a few deep breaths. "I recognize him and the only place he invited me to was his bedroom. He didn't like me saying no and tried to kiss me… and I think I may have broken his nose when I introduced his face to a wall."
"Seriously?" Logan asked slightly amazed that she would have done something like that.
She shrugged and handed him back his phone. "It was a couple of weeks after school started and I was at the pub with my roommate Janet. He tried to dance with me, and I said no and went to the bathroom. He cornered me when I walked out, he was drunk and tried to convince me to go with him, I laughed he got mad and tried to kiss me, I moved the sort-of slammed his face into the wall behind me. The grandfathers and dad were insistent that I learn to take of myself, so I started self-defense classes in high school… I should probably start that again."
Logan started laughing uncontrollably as he thought about this information. Harrison probably didn't extend the invite because he was embarrassed. He typed a quick message to Colin asking him to find out if Harrison had a broken nose or anything at the beginning of last year. "This changes things Ace," he told her as he pulled her towards him. "I didn't want to hide it from you but when he said you declined the invite… but if he never invited you it makes getting you in easier."
"I want to write a story about it," Rory told him as she studied him and saw his weariness. "I know it's supposed to be a secret, but an article can only make it seem more mysterious and exclusive. I'll leave out names and locations and you can read it before it goes to print. And even if I don't get an inside exclusive, I can still write an article based on what I found," she stated as she gestured to the research.
He sighed and leaned back on the couch. "I'll talk to the guys. But for now, let's get food, I'm starving."
"Okay," Rory said with a small giggle and leaned towards him. "But first I did not give you a proper hello." She leaned into him and placed a kiss on his lips and ran her tongue over his lips asking for entrance. They kissed for minutes until they broke apart for air and her stomach growled.
He laughed and placed a chaste kiss on her lips. "Let's go feed the beast."
Over the following few days Colin was able to confirm Harrison did have a broken nose but there were differing accounts as to the reason, his story was that he received it from the boyfriend of a girl he hit on, the rumor was he received it from a girl who didn't welcome his advances. Logan told both Colin and Finn Rory's version of the event and both laughed and stated Harrison deserved it. None of them were happy about Rory wanting to write an expose but they agreed that her way allowed them to have some control over the narrative and they could blame this on Harrison for not inducting her the previous year.
They planned to have Rory meet them at the pub where Harrison and some of the other senior members would be with them and she would give them the information that she had and confront Harrison about her exclusion last year, Logan, Colin and Finn couldn't wait for this turn of events since they all wanted Rory included.
The night of the ambush arrived, and the three men sat at a corner booth with the other LDBers talking about having Rory join. Harrison was still a firm no and didn't think Logan dating her should change that the others were leaning on siding with Logan since he also had the support of Finn and Colin and with Logan taken and preoccupied with Rory it would allow them to receive more female attention.
"Hello boys," Rory cooed as she walked towards the group and Logan stood to give her a kiss.
"Hey Ace, what are you doing here?" he asked trying to keep up the act.
"Well," she drawled out as he sat back down pulling her next to him. "I was hoping you and your friends would like to comment on an article I'm writing."
"Article?" Finn asked with a grin. "Is it about the hottest bachelors on campus?"
She gave him a mischievous smile, "Nope, it's on the Life and Death Brigade and since you are all in it…"
"Were in it?" Colin asked in a surprised voice.
"Yep," she sighed as she studied them all and focused on Harrison and saw the man squirm slightly in his seat. "And according to my research I should have also been ask to join since my family was one of the founders but I guess my invite was lost… but anyways," she sighed and looked at the group. "Since I'm not in it I figure it will make a great expose. I already have the blonde in the ballgown, the license plate on the black SUV, in omnia paratus, catchy slogan by the way, the Huntzbergers, Gilmore's, McCrea's and Hayden's were in it, and a bunch of other things." She flashed a large smile as she studied the men at the table seeing their surprise at her words. Focusing back on Harrison, a look of disgust formed on her face. "But seeing who some of your members are… I guess I should be happy I wasn't invited last year. By the way, Harrison… how is the nose? I heard that I broke it last year."
Harrison moved slightly uncomfortably in his chair and saw the looks from the other members. "I don't know what you're talking about…" he stammered as he felt all eyes on him.
"Hmm, really?" she questioned as she reached for Logans scotch and took a sip. "But then again you were drinking that night and wouldn't take no for an answer… you sort of deserved me slamming your face into the wall. Hopefully, it taught you a lesson… No really does mean no," she shrugged her shoulders and then focused on the rest of the group. "I want to attend one of your events, I'll write a story keeping your names and location out of it and in return I won't say anything to my grandparents, either set, about my… exclusion last year or the overzealous advances of one of your members. I'll leave you boys to think about it." She quickly stood. "Colin, Finn I'm sure I will see you later," she stated and then leaned down to kiss Logan again, "I'll see you tonight?" she questioned and at his nod she walked away from the table about out of the pub.
"So, Harrison, want to tell us what she was talking about?" Colin questioned in a menacing tone.
"You didn't issue the invite?" Robert one of the other members asked as he focused on the man.
"Well," Harrison started and then looked at the group. "She broke my nose," he tried to defend.
"Only after you wouldn't take no for an answer!" Finn retorted. The table all glared at Harrison knowing that if she was already a member there was no way this story would have ever been a consideration.
Logan sighed, "she is going to write the article no matter what. If we give her what she wants…"
"She's your girlfriend," one of the other members stated. "Can't you convince her not to write it?"
Logan, Colin and Finn all laughed. "Not a chance," Logan replied and took a sip of his drink. "When she gets her mind set on something there is no way of changing it."
"Fine, I'm in," Robert sighed and looked at the others who all reluctantly agreed as long as they got to see the article before print.
Logan stood up and finished off his drink. "I'll let her know you agree."
He made it to the newsroom and smiled when he saw Rory talking with Doyle and decided he would have some fun. As he walked into the room, he saw Doyle's eyes widen and he muttered he's back. Rory hadn't seen him yet and heard her ask who and then smile when she noticed him.
"Doyle, my friend," Logan said as he extended his hand, and the other man shook it. "Your looking very, very well, how ya been?"
"I've been great, Logan. Great to have you back," Doyle stammered.
"Yeah well, I stayed away as long as I could, but the Yale Daily News called to me," Logan replied as he sent Rory a smile when she walked over to her desk.
"Oh, sure. So, how's everything? How's the family?" Doyle asked with a hesitant look.
"Everything's fine, the family's the family…" he replied with a haughty tone and Rory could tell he hated it when people used him as a way to talk about his father. "Ah, my desk. Beautiful," he stated as he sat down trying to change the subject.
"Um, you know, Logan, I didn't know exactly when you were coming back, and I gave out the beats," Doyle stated nervously.
"That's fine, Doyle, I'll take whatever you've got left," he said with a sigh, placing his feet on the desk.
Doyle nervously shifted from one foot to the next. "Actually, there's none left."
Logan gave him a smirk. "Perfect, just the one I wanted. Relax, Doyle. I'm just here for the pretty picture in my father's head. I'm not going to be any trouble at all."
"Oh, Logan, please. You, trouble? Stop. We're just glad to have you here," Doyle fawned in a slightly high-pitched tone.
His eyes narrowed, and he took a small breath before replying. "Careful, boy, you might hurt yourself, kid. Better get back to work, right boss?" he stated in an irritated tone. "Rory, nice to see you," he told her with a smirk. "We need to talk later…"
Doyle quickly walked over to her desk, "You know Logan? How do you know Logan?"
Rory looked at Logan and rolled her eyes, "yes well…"
Doyle cut her off and continued in a hushed tone. "That guy's a real piece of work. He took last year off with a bunch of his friends. He was going to sail Daddy's yacht around till he sank it right off Fiji. They spent six months gallivanting and partying and God knows what till Daddy sent one of his planes to bring him back. I've spent two years kissing Logan's butt."
"Don't you mean ass?" she asked with an irritated tone that Doyle didn't catch.
"Whatever," he replied dismissively. "Guess it's time to pucker up again. Man, I hate those kind of guys."
"What kind of guys?" she asked confused at where this was going.
"Those privileged, white males," he replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Doyle, you're a privileged white male," she retorted getting irritated with this conversation.
"Well, he's more privileged. And way more whiter," he stated with a huff. "But you never said, how do you know him?"
Rory sighed and studied the editor and glanced at Logan who was giving her an amused look. "We are friends Doyle."
"What?" Doyle exclaimed and looked between the two of them with a panicked look before quickly walking off to talk to another reporter.
Rory gathered up her things and walked over to Logan and saw the look of hurt in his eyes about her saying they were friends but got up to join her.
As they walked out of the newsroom Rory pulled him the side. "I told him we were friends because we didn't want to tell out families yet. You said Mitchum likes to come into the office, do you really think Doyle would keep quiet about us dating?"
Logan sighed and wrapped his arms around her. "No, your right. Anything that could get him into Mitchum's good graces the man would attempt to use."
"I'm not trying to hide us," she told him as she caressed his cheek. "And I can't wait till he finds out, and if you want him to know I will walk back in there and tell him…"
"No, your right," Logan sighed as he cut her off and placed a soft kiss on her lips. "But I did come here to tell you the article is good. You will be getting more info soon."
"Okay," Rory replied as she hugged him. "Now what do you want to do now?"
"Coffee?" he asked as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and led her off.
