Chapter One:
Long has it been since he felt any kind of peace with himself. Long has it been since things were simple and he had no burdens on his shoulders. Even with a new family, in a different land, all that he was before still haunted him. The memories would never go away. Neither would those scars that used to be hidden by his wrist wrappings. No matter what he did, there would always be pieces of the man he used to be.
Thanks to his son however, he has learned to accept this. Up to this point, he has told the boy a good bit of the truth. That they are gods and that they have a great responsibility on their shoulders. That the god that he himself used to be was not all that righteous. This land of the Nordic gods had much in common with his Greek homeland. One being the fact that the gods here are also just as vile as the Olymians. Because of this,, despite only dealing with three of them, He resents them with all hate he can muster. Specifically Thor. He sees much of his vengeful old self in him. At least from the stories of what he had done. How that god of thunder would end the life of any giant on sight regardless of the threat they posed. Much like who he was known as back in his homeland: The Ghost of Sparta. How he hated that name. Even the talking, annoying, yet intelligent head knows that title.
It does not help that he still sees her spirit sometimes when going about Wildwoods. Even after uncovering his Blades, ready to accept the past, Athena still torments him. Still, at least she shows up at times when the boy is not around. The exiled Spartan is still not ready to give him the full story. While he did tell the boy that he is from a far away land in Greece called Sparta, and that he made a deal with a god that cost him his soul, and that he killed many who were deserving and many who were not, and that he killed his father, that is still not the full story. When he and the boy are both ready, He will know the truth.
The boy had always been a unique person. His faculty for languages was unmatched by any other mortal according to Mimir. Despite being the son of a fearsome warrior, he was more passive than his father, yet fierce where it counted. Through most of his life he has lived sick and helpless. Due to the truth of his nature being kept from him for so long, he grew ill at one point and felt that he would not be able to leave his own bed ever again. Since the death of his mother and the journey to fulfil her last wish however, he would not live like that for long. Soon he would become a skilled warrior and fight alongside his father whom he had not been too open with for most of his life. In the past he loved his mother more, but as their journey went on, he grew to know and understand his father. That he was agod and that his father's past was a complicated and nealy unforgiving story.
Even at the end, he learned his mother had a secret of her own. She was one of the Jotnar. The giants. His mother, who was apparently Laufey the Just, was indeed a giant. Therefore making the boy one as well. Even Kratos had no idea. His one question however, the one that regarded the wall that had images of their entire journey. The wall the giants carved due to them knowing all that would happen. The writing on said wall addressed him not as his name Atreus, by Loki. This name is what his mother apparently wanted to call him the day he was born. Kratos wished for him to be named Atreus. She must have called him Loki to the Jotnar. Why? This could not be answered yet. It's clear the mother had a plan in motion. What would his destiny be? Would it result in the fall of the Aesir? All of Midgard? Hopeful not. If he did have a big part to play in what was to come, the boy wished for him to be on the side of good. He had to. He had to be a better god than the Aesir ever were.
Odin's ravens appear every now and then. It is not a problem for the two gods. However, everytime Kratos sees them, he grows a cold expression on his face. He thinks about how Fimbulwinter was caused by him. That Ragnarok will happen sooner. That he most likely will have to deal with more gods of this land. He has effectively caused the end of the world again. It is like reliving the events of his attack on Mount Olympus all over again. He wagers that he will have to come to terms with that soon. The best he can do is make sure his son does not fall in the same shoes as his old self. Should that happen would his failure be complete.
After the first few weeks of Fimbulwinter, the boy felt exhausted already. And it didn't help that this was meant to go on for a total of three years. For most of what spare time he could have, he'd write in his journal about everything that had happened. Their journey, the foes they've bested and how to defeat them, bits of Jotnar Lore they have discovered and more.
One thing that many would agree on is that the two gods are formidable. No matter what they faced, they always came out on top. Their determination, power, and especially, weapons are the key to their victories. Kratos' weaponry makes for a wide variety of deadly attacks. His main weapon, the Leviathan Axe, is for sure, one of the most powerful weapons he's ever used. Fused with the screams of nearly twenty frost trolls according to the Brok and Sindri, the two dwarves who forged it, the Axe delivers its power in every way. From frost beams to explosions, to frost boosted strikes and even the ability to recall the weapon, Kratos sees that he uses it as much as possible to avoid his other choice of weapon. That would be the Blades of Chaos. His great burden and a relic of his past. The two fire knives of death were once a part of him forever. Now he can remove the chains at any time. These days however, due to the vast growth of Hel walkers which cannot be harmed by the Axe, the Blades must be used more often. The Spartan also carries his guardian shield, a tool of defense which he can retract at will. This allows for extra breathing room so when he truly needs the shield, he can make it spawn in an instant and use it to his will. The boy also carries his own little arsenal. With his Talon Bow, quiver, and knife, he can deliver much accuracy into his attacks. Even more so with his two types of arrows. Light Arrows which deliver the power of the Light of Alfheim, and Shock Arrows which can electrify any enemy and stun them greatly. Kratos has always appreciated a partner in battle and his son fulfills that role in great fashion.
Hel walkers have plagued the lands for years. Since the disappearance of the Valkyries, Helheim has been overflowed with the souls of the dead. Without the Valkyries, who decide who shall be taken to Valhalla, the hall where those who die in glorious combat reside, Hel is overwhelmed with the dead. As a result Hel cannot contain them which gives way for those souls to become beings of ice and plague Midgard. In a way, Hel is becoming Midgard. And the fact that the long winter grows by the day does not help. Due to this, Kratos must use the Blades more often.
One day, it was another long afternoon exploring the Lake of Nine. It was amazing what valuable resources that could still be found along the beaches despite all of it once being underwater for years. After some time collecting resources from the Mason's Channel, the boy noticed the light in the sky. Mimir, the talking head attached to Kratos' belt, noticed it too.
"What is that?" The boy asked. Unsure of what was about to happen.
"Ready yourself" His father told him in his deep voice.
"Yes father." The boy said in response. Whenever his father told him that, he meant it. He knew that he truly had to be ready for anything that comes forward. As he did the light became brighter it spread beyond the Lake of Nine. It seemed to be shining to all of Midgard. As it became bigger, it also became so bright that neither could see anything even each other. It all happened so fast. Both the boy and Kratos felt as though they'd pass out. In a matter of seconds, they did.
Elsewhere
It was a day like all the others that came to pass. Council meetings, talking amongst friends, and an afternoon spent bending practice. Aang was exhausted as always, but he didn't really mind. He knew at the end of the day he;d be able to spend quality time with his friends. Especially Katara. She always found a way to make him feel loved like no other. Ever since she found him in that iceberg they've both found ways to make each other happy. Whether it was through comforting them when they were grieving for the loss of their loved ones or simply having fun together. At the end of the war, they became something more than friends. Of course everyone that knew them personally knew that this would happen. It was just a matter of time.
Zuko was now Firelord of the Firenation and has worked hard everyday since then to restore the honor of the fire nation. It was his primary focus due to the importance to keep peace between the other nations. 100 years of the Fire nation waging war on the rest of the world as anyone would expect has left a negative impression on it. It would take a long time to return things to how they should be, but in the end it'd be worth it. Many times when he would sleep at night, the young fire lord would contemplate how everything had gone the way it did. How he had gone from a banished prince who would hunt the avatar for the rest of his days to a powerful, wise firelord and a friend of the Avatar. Not that he would complain, but still, sometimes it would still surprise him even after all this time. His uncle Iroh was unbelievably proud of him. He stuck by him through all of his struggles and cared for him in a way that his cruel father never did. For that, Zuko was eternally grateful.
Toph of course was the same as ever. Headstrong, powerful, and fierce. Traits the average human would ot expect to see in a young blind girl, Oh would they be surprised. Her will to fight was admirable. Her earthbending skills were unmatched. She had amazing friends, respect among her fellow Earth Kingdom respidence, and above all else, she was the first person to meta bend. Such a feat could not be performed by any other bender. Not even Aang or any of the avatars of the past. This feat put her on the map. Soon, she would start a school for metalbending. Reasonable, if this skill was possible, she did not want it to die with her. She wanted it to live on. Though all of her life was great at this point, there was one thing that bugged her. Her relationship with her parents. After the war, she tried to come back to them and see if they would accept who she was and that she was not a young helpless blind her anymore. Things went south and the parents did not learn anything. They tried to contain toph yet again by putting her in a metal box, but this of course did not end well for them. Little did they know that she could metalbend. After Toph ripped the cage open, she was furious. Her outburst towards her parents was so aggressive, she could have brought the whole house down on them. She vowed to never see them again. And so far that has not been a problem. She had others who cared for her and due to this, she was happy without her foolish parents. If they could not get it, then they had no say in her life anymore.
The non benders of the gang, Sokka and Suki, have had quite the relationship. They cared for each other immensely. The fun they had together both made them not even care about anything else. Ever since Suki literally beat the misogyny out of Sokka, he changed for the better. He saw that anybody can be a warrior and along the way has shown to have unique smarts and skills. By now, he has mastered the way of the boomerang from his home, the Water Tribe, way of the Kyoshi Warrior from the Earth Kingdom, inventing things to gain an aerial advantage, and way of the sword from the Fire Nation. Of course in other areas of skill and intelligence he lacks in, but at the end of the day, his friends and family wouldn't have it any other way.
Aside from Azula, who broke out of her mental institute a year ago, no one dared to cross any of Team Avatar in battle. All of them had skill from which all would not dare to challenge. Aang being the Avatar, he had mastered all four elements and the Avatar State. Airbending is clearly his best element as he uses it for agility and it's how he handles most situations effectively. Waterbending has been little challenge for him especially due to Katara teaching him how to. Though earthbending was a bigger challenge for him, Aang has been exceptional in the martial art and even toph has become impressed. Firebending is the only one he is cautious to use. Especially around Katara after the accident still. Even so, his mastery in all of them has made him the first avatar to do so. Even more so, he now has the ability to energy bend. Which means he can take peoples' bending away like he did Ozai. Katara has mastered water bending to a tee. No other waterbender could match her. Not even her master Pakku. She can bend the water in plants as well. The ability to bloodbend has been outlawed because of her. She made it so that the technique would be seen as a criminal act. Ever since Hama, she saw blood bending as something to fear and made Aang promise that if she ever uses it again, to take her bending away for the safety of others. Aang of course didn't want to, because of her gifts. They were too important to just take them away, but Katara managed to get a promise out of him eventually. Hopefully, they'll never have to worry about that ever. Toph's earthbending of course was the best all around and she has perfected her metalbending. Not much can be said about that. Zuko, learning the ancient way of firebending from the dragons has found a peaceful, yet powerful way to firebend and can redirect it. Sokka and Suki have also proven to be smart and tough in battle. Together, they were unstoppable and no one could match them.
That of course would change very soon. One night, in the Southern Water Tribe where Aang, Sokka, and Zuko were at a council meeting, Katara noticed something about the weather. It was becoming colder. At first she thought this was nothing as it was the South Pole. Why wouldn't it be cold? But then when a large snowfall came in, she realized that something was wrong. The sky became darker and the cold became so unbearable that not even their winter coats could handle it. The council felt it as well and all of them went outside to see the problem. Aang found Katara near the building and ran over to her.
"What's happening he asked. You thinka blizzard is coming in?" he asked.
"No. This never happened before. This… This is something else."
It was at that moment where a loud CRASH could be heard throughout the entire village. Yeah, this was not normal and something big was happening. Aang took his glider towards the area the crash was heard as Katara created an ice stream to keep up with him the best he could. Finding the area of impact took nearly ten minutes when suddenly they found two figures lying in a large crater near the front gate. One was a large, muscular man with large muscles, bald head, red tattoos, and pale white skin. The other was a young boy with red hair, and a bow. Both had very odd looking armor that didn't look like anything from any of the four nations. Katara in her caring nature when to see if they were alive, but was cautious, the big one looked dangerous and could very well be an enemy. This being the case, she went to the boy first. Her hand rested upon his chest and felt a heartbeat. He was unconscious. Suddenly, his eyes stirred open and saw Katara's face.
"Who are you?" the boy asked almost in a threatening manner. He then reached to grab his bow and draw an arrow from his quiver.
"Hey! Take it easy. I was just making sure you were alright!" Katara told him.
The man then woke up. Eyes wide, he ran towards the boy to stand in front of him and got ready to fight the young waterbender. The gauntlet on his wrist then formed a shield out of nowhere.
"Leave us." the man said in the deepest voice Katara ever heard.
"What's with you? She just wanted to help you guys!" Aang said now at Katara's side.
"We do not need your help. Leave before I am forced to kill you both." the man warned them.
'Don't you know who this is? The Avatar? Strongest person in the world?" Katara told them as she pointed to her boyfriend.
"I do not know who you are and I do not care. I will fight and kill if need be." he responded in his deep tone clearly not backing down.
"Father, wait!" the boy said as he turned to Aang and Katara. "Where are we anyway? Is this Helheim? Alfheim? Or are we still in Midgard?" He asked.
"What are you talking about? This is the South Pole. This isn't whatever the hell you're talking about! Calm down. I don't want to fight you." Katara responded.
"If you fight, you will fail to succeed." the man said.
"How are you so sure?" Aang asked the man.
The man looked to his wrists and had a gentle grip on one of them. "Everyone does," he said.
Katara and Aang looked at each other confused on who this man was. He clearly did not fear them. He was determined to protect his son as well.
"Alright look. Clearly this has been a misunderstanding. You guys seemed to be in shock. How about we all calm down, go inside and talk? I think this could do us all some good." Aang said. Ever the peacekeeper. Even now.
"Father, let's give them a chance. They don't even know half of the stuff we're talking about. I think they're trustworthy." the boy reasoned with his father.
The man thought about it for a long moment. He was not very trusting due to his past.
"Fine. But the moment I suspect any trickery, do not say I did not warn you. Understand?". The man asked the boy. The boy nodded in response.
Aang sighed in relief. "Okay. Now that we've all calmed down, allow us to introduce ourselves. I'm Aang. This is my girlfriend Katara. What are yours?"
The boy spoke for his father. "I'm Atreus. And this is-"
"Kratos." The boy was cut off by another voice.
"Who said that?" Katara asked.
"Brotha, could ya hold me up so I can say hello?" the voice said.
Kratos reached to the back of his belt and revealed a head with glowing eyes, two horns, beard, and blue writings on his forehead that couldn't be read to either bender.
Aang and Katara, eyes wide, were kind of freaked out by this site as anyone would expect.
"The fuck is that?!" Katara asked in shock.
"Hello lad, madam. I'm Mimir. Smartest man-er head alive." Mimir said cheerfully.
"Oh, well okay that's not normal. How are you alive?"
"Vanir Magic. Tis a quite a helpful thing ya see. Pleasure to meet ye both."
"Uhhh, you too I guess." Katara said.
"Yeah…. Well how about we introduce you to everyone hm?"
"Wait." Kratos told the couple as he reached behind his back in search of his weapons. They weren't there. "My Axe and Blades are missing."
"We didn't see an axe on you. Or any blades." Aang told the Spartan. The large man looked to the side and saw two blades with chains attached. He looked at them for a few moments. He seemed as though these blades were a burden. Yet he chose to wear them nonetheless. This is what it seemed to Katara and Aang at least. Mimir knew what these Blades meant to Kratos. The burden that they are. Slowly, he wrapped the chains around his wrists, and once he was done, put the Blades onto the back of his armor. Kratos then walked out of the crater and motioned for Katara and Aang to move.
"Step aside". He commanded. The couple complied, but confused as to why he made such a command.
Kratos then extended his arm wide as if he were ready to catch something. Suddenly, the ground shook and a rumble could be heard. In the distance a glowing blue object was coming in fast and in the blink of an eye, an axe came into his hand with a loud smack. The impact barely made the Spartan flinch. The axe had a unique design. It wasn't like a normal weapon from any of the nations. The blue and gold patterns in the blade, the curved, long handle, the blue glow of the two runic emblems that seemed to contain power. It indeed looked to be a powerful weapon.
"Whoa!" The couple exclaimed in union. "How'd you do that?!"
"Runic magic." Atreus replied. Aang at this point was really puzzled. Magic was never considered a thing in the human world. Just bending. Yet clearly they aren't benders.
"Well how bout you tell us more about it inside where it's warm. It's freezing out. And about those blades. I've never seen those before. Are they a family heirloom?"
"No! Nor will they ever be." the spartan shouted out of nowhere. This of course confused the couple even more, but decided not to push anything.
"Um, okay. Well come on and meet everyone. It's better than being out in the cold." Aang told them.
And so father and son followed the two benders to their home, but little did they notice the change in the environment. For, what could be seen in the far distance was the corpse of Thamur the giant. A sight could only be seen in the Nordic world. Soon this would all come into revelation as two worlds were now becoming one. Soon, both the Ghost of Sparta and the Avatar would have to face what comes ahead. For Ragnarok is coming.
