So let the story begin :)

The sun hadn't yet shown its round face in the atmosphere, but the little rays that peeped, bestowed brilliance, and shined upon the pearl white snow flakes. The trees stood starkly in the winter morning like x-rays of their summer selves, only in reverse; black on white. They looked forlorn in the frigid early morning, with already the short winter daylight making its way through the clouds.

The street was decorated like a birthday cake, frosting everywhere. And how fitting, to Hillary the day of Christmas was like a gift. She sucked in the cold air and felt it enter like a tonic. But this year, it was different. As she made her way down the street she reached a place very familiar to her - their house.

The house was long and narrow, only twelve feet wide at the front, but it stretched some thirty feet back like a giant shoe box. It was two stories high and had a one story extension at the rear for the kitchen. The wooden framed sash windows were propped open with sticks and the brick work, perhaps once a jaunty yellow, which now looked dirty with lack of care. A small rose garden had been planted in front, and although it had obviously once been carefully planned and loved, it was now riddled with weeds, popping out from the snow covered ground.

Hillary's heart ached seeing their house, which was once filled with love and joy, in such a condition. Still ignoring the fact, she went inside.

Dirt and dust had worked in complete sync to cover the furniture, floors and walls.

"Our beloved house..", she heaved a sigh in regret, "Everything has changed."

Standing in the middle of the front hall, she closed her eyes and recalled back all the past year's memories.

Flashback :

Winter had already arrived then. The afternoon sun emitting soft sunrays, and sky decorated with clouds just like cream on a Christmas cake looked down at the snow covered earth. Indeed it was the day when the holy Jesus was born, and the atmosphere had adorned itself to celebrate it. The day was illuminated with that special cold, pale light only winter's Sun could give, and the rain from last night made everything glow with a really slippery ice. It was clear that if it rained again, it would fall snow instead of water from the sky. It was the perfect day for staying home and celebrating Christmas and that was what the lover duo were doing.

"Hillary? Where are you hiding?" The brunette was hiding behind the cupboard like a 7 year kid would do while playing hide and seek. Hearing the blunette call her name after not getting any trace of her, she giggled in amusement, but gave no answer to him.

Deliberately, not searching further, he played along. "Okay then.. Ishould probably return the gift that I bought. I don't think Hils will like it anyways."

"Kai.. No! Give me my gift." Getting out of nowhere all of a sudden, she almost snatched the gift out of the blunette's hand, while he only smirked at how childish she still was.

"Christmas gifts should not be opened at this hour Hils."

"With you by my side every minute feels like Christmas and I will open it." Saying the words casually Hillary opened the box, only to find a watch.

"A watch?" She curiously looked at her lover, seeing his gift preference. His reflex was faster than she expected, as if the dual haired Russian knew the question was coming his way. "Don't you like it?"

"Of course I love it. No matter what you give me, be it costly or cheap, a watch or a ring, it doesn't matter. Because I already have the most valuable and rarest thing in the world, you." The brunette gave him the answer he was longing to hear for.

"Today, on the day of Christmas, I wish that we get to be with each other all our lives andbeyond." Holding her shoulders, he contentfully spoke, "I wish the same."

"Still I have a question."

"Ask away." The brunette asked the question which was pondering in her mind for a while, "Why a watch? I mean it could be anything else too because you know I already have a plenty of them."

"Hils, because time is the most valuable thing in the universe. Everything, money, jewellery, wealth all can be gained by anyone if one tries hard, but no one has ever been able to control time. Man always had to abide the rules of time. And our love is just as precious as time, so I bought this watch for you Hils." With a soft smile on his lips, he explained his intention of gifting that watch, listening to which her ruby orbed glistened with happiness and admiration for her lover.

"Aww Kai, every moment I find a whole new reason to love you all over again." Her feathery soft lips rested on his cold yet soothing lips, for which the blunette was longing for like an eternity. Showering their love, it felt like soft rain on a summer evening to her. To him it felt like an explosion of the best flavors in the universe all at once mingling together and creating the best taste and sensation he'd ever felt. Her hands embraced his neck and his to her waist, increasing the sensuality of their kiss. Hillary let out a soft sound, letting him know she was enjoying every second of it, falling in a more deeper love. Finally running out of oxygen, they parted.

"Look Kai, it's snowing." She joyfully exclaimed.

"You like snow don't you?"

"I love snow. Come on let's go out and play."

"Those were days.." Bearing a broad sad smile on her face, she carefully opened the door of the library with the keys and went in.

"It's sure needs a cleaning job." Saying that, she began cleaning the library by herself.

Lights on the trees under fallen snow

You get a bit closer when the winter's cold

Now I can't wait 'til you're by my side

All of the best gifts, you just can't buy

Wherever you go, you light up the room

I hope that you'll make it back home soon

'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you

The sun had hidden under the horizon and the evening, letting out a purplish blue luminesce, shone upon the entire hemisphere. The crescent moon, accompanied by its thousands of fellow stars could make one jealous, but then again it was all temporary. The aroma of cape honeysuckle had filled the entire biosphere, soothing the chills that one could get. The streets were all magnificently decorated with colourful lights and Christmas carols could be heard from the nearby church.

The library, which some moments before was covered with dust and spider webs was now as good as a newly renovated one. Not a single sign of dirt could be found, courtesy of the magical hands of Hillary. Multicolored lights decorated the perimeters of the windows on the bottom. The pine sweet smell of the tree ghosted through the room, mixing with the oaken oven scents. The star-flash of tinsel glittered brightly and ribbons of flame danced in the hearth of the fire, that was lit in the fireplace. They chased away the burglar-black wall shadows and the brunette sank deeper into the couch on which she was sitting. Though warmth of the flames had heated up the room, she felt herself cold. The Christmas tree flashed and flickered with its dazzling lights. An angel was perched on the top, glittering with its flash-silver lustre. Her ruby orbs drifted up to the angel at the top of the tree. It reflected like river-light, stirring up her memories.

Getting up, she took out a small box from the nearby shelf and opened it. The watch that the slate haired Russian had gifted her was still as good as new, with not even a single scratch. She took it out and carefully placed it on her wrist.

"Merry Christmas Kai."

Saying the three golden words of theirs, she reassured him, "Don't you worry. I'll soon reunite with you." For a normal couple, 'I love you' was considered as the golden love words, but for them, it was different. Everytime she faced any problem, those three words were always there to cheer her up. It was their way of expressing love, simple yet unique.

She got up from her seat and stood by the window, gazing at the light snowfall outside.

"Kai.."

Flashback:

The spring came with a gentle spirit, as one who realises that warming up softly often brings the best results to the heart and soul. There are vestiges of winter, yet also the promise of warm summer days ahead.

There was a strange playfulness in nature, in the night skies, woodland and soil. The time of plenty was coming and the joy of coming abundance energizes the air. Even at the time of the moonless night, there was a new warmth, inviting the lips to smile. The greenness of the grass is soon to be echoed by the trees, while the flowers promise their rainbow garland to our Earth. No sign of the moon was to be scene in the jet black sky, only a few twinkling stars were the only source of light.

The brunette was sound asleep by the side of her beloved, a single candle lighting up the room. A sudden call from her family was thing that interrupted her.

"Who is calling at this time?" Hillary tiredly tried to get up, but was stopped by Kai who pulled her closer, preventing her to receive the call.

"Don't."

"Kai let go of me. It might be an important call." She pleaded.

"Nothing important. Get to sleep." Kai shrugged off her words and embraced her more tightly and by the time the phone stopped ringing.

"Urgh Kai." Getting irritated she pushed him aside and was later shocked to see the caller id. "A call from my father?"

"What does he needs now?" The blunette was annoyed by the interruption in their sleep.

"Hello Dad."

"Hillary why didn't you pick my call. You should.." Sensing the amount of tension in his voice she didn't let him speak anymore, throwing a question at him.

"Dad wait. What's the matter?"

"Your mother is severely ill. Her temperature is rising every minute."

"What? Okay I'm coming."

"Be quick. " With that her father hung up the call.

"What did he say?"

"Kai my mother's severely ill. I gotta get going." Saying this she got out of the bed and began changing her clothes.

"At this hour?"

"Only option now." Without letting him say anything further, she grabbed her coat and rushed out.

The wet, desolate streets of the city rested in silence as the starry black sky wept over it. The water in the portholesshimmeredby the glow of the bright, yellow street lamps. The small, green trees on the roadside swayed as the strong breeze hit them.

Above a faded zebra crossing, a traffic light frantically changed colorsseeming rather like a disco light. The tensed brunette walked through the side of the road, constantly worrying about her parents. She was engrossed in her own thoughts not being able to hear the sound of the horn the truck was giving. Seeing the bright front lights getting closer, she got back to her senses and immediately turned back. It was too late. She felt her body go numb, not being able to move a single inch, but a pair of strong hands grabbed her and threw her out of the way. The truck rolled over, lights swirled like crazy catherine-wheels and the noise of the metal being bashed over the concrete walls was almost deafening.

Hilary's POV:

The moment the truck hit the walls on the side of the street, I assumed I was dead. I tried to open my eyes, but couldn't. I liked to be unconscious rather than awake but the moment when I was awake I feared, the fear that was stuck in my mind. I could taste the coppery blood pooling in my mouth, but then realisation hit me.

No..Kai..! Kai!!

I rushed to the site, which by now was crowded by quite a few people. Making my way through them, I saw him. Kai. Blood oozed out of his motionless and almost lifeless body. The stationary structure which seemed like a statue lay still flat on the rough concrete road. There was almost no signs of life in him and his once well structured and angelic façade was now as pale as the ice. fragile heart had stopped functioning yet his eyes were filled with vengeance and hatred and seemed to be around so as to hunt down that reckless driver who took his precious life away from him. The strong stench of the fresh blood seeped into my nose. Thick, concentrated and chilli like fresh blood poured like rainwater from his head to form a pit of horrifying picture. It was my worse than my worst nightmare. The siren of the ambulance which whizzed down the road was what broke my trance. I rushed to him and felt myself broke into a million pieces.

"Kai!!" I screamed on the top of my lungs, the range my vocal cord could go till and felt my tears flowing like a waterfall from my eyes. As the paramedics arrived, one of them put his perfectly calm and still hand beside his sharp and pointy nose.

I didn't want to know the answer but gathering all my courage and wiping my tears, in a broken voice I inquired them, "Is he...?"

"Miss he is still breathing but it's too slow. We need to rush to the hospital immediately."

Somehow I nodded my head. Kai, he is still breathing. I can still save him.

His immobile body was placed on a stretcher as strong and paramedics with visible and bulging muscles lifted him up onto the ambulance.

"Miss, are you related to the victim?"

I nodded my head slightly.

"Then you must come with us." Again, I replied with a nod. I felt my vocal cord stop it's functioning, allowing no word to come out of my mouth.

Normal POV:

Within fifteen minutes, the ambulance reached the hospital. The blunette was already admitted to ICU and the doctors were trying their best to help him recover.

The brunette was sitting on the steel bench kept outside the ICU cabin with eyes blankly staring at the ground. It was as if she was a living dead, she had life but her heart was stolen away, cut into a million pieces and thrown away. Occasionally her eyes pondered on the glass door of the cabin, hoping to get any news. Fortunately, her wish was answered and a middle aged doctor came out. She jolted up from her seat and impatiently questioned him.

"How's Kai?"

"And you are?"

"Hillary Tachibana, his girlfriend."

"Oh. Miss Tachibana I'll be very honest with you. He has a major injury on his brain with 3 broken ribs, the left leg bone badly broken and also he lost a lot of blood. It's already a miracle that he didn't die on spot and is still alive. But I'm afraid it won't be long. He cannot be saved. We've done our best but he has a very short time left."

Hillary blankly stared at the face of the doctor with no expression at all. But trying her best to keep her to her senses, she inquired, "Can I meet him?"

"You can." Without any further talk she rushed into the cabin. Her heart bled seeing his condition. The Russian blunette was lying among an all white atmosphere, covered till the chest with a white bed sheet. His hands were heavily bandaged and connected to a number of machines. The monitor portraying his heartbeat was slowly beeping making it clear, he won't survive long. Beneath the oxygen mask his fragile breaths were seen and the brunette quietly sat on the stool kept beside the bed. In an almost inaudible voice she called out,

"Kai?"

To her surprise he heard that and his tired eyelids opened a bit. He somehow opened his oxygen mask and in a tired voice, he smiled and spoke,

"Hils.."

"Kai." Leaning her face against his hand, she sobbed seeing his condition.

"Don't..cry Hils. Yu..you have to live."

"How will I leave without you Kai? You're my lifeline." She pleaded.

"Hils I..I know I won't live long."

"Stop saying such inauspicious words." Slamming back at him, waterworks bursted out from her eyes.

"But Hils, listen. When I'll be gone don't mourn for me. Promise me you will fulfil our dream of seeing the world together. Promise me you won't cry for me."

"How Kai? How? It was the dream we dreamt together. Won't you live to fulfil it? Won't you live to fulfil our dream of having a family, having kids and staying together all our lives?"

"Death can't part us away Hils. We will reunite."

"But when?"

"Once you live your dream. We will meet again in next life, even after death. Promise me.." His words were interrupted by a trail of coughs, indicating his time was limited.

"Kai I need to call the doctor."

"No. Promise me Hils."

Sobbing she said, "I promise you Kai I will not cry and I will live to fulfil our wishes, until you come to take me with you."

"I will come..don't you..worry." Uttering the words, the last bit if life in his body escaped. His eyelids which now became heavy, fell. His lifeless hand fell from the grasp of the brunette. The monitor which was once pointing the rate of his heartbeat was now displaying a single straight line. Noticing it the brunette closed her eyes, letting the tears come out infinitely.

"Kai look I've not shed a single tear since then and I have visited the places we dreamt to visit once, only I couldn't have a family. Without you that's impossible. We'll unite at the netherworld. The time has come Kai." The brunette who was still standing by the closed window with a expressionless façade, now smiled truly from her heart.

In a moment the world became snow-globe, one of those Christmas time ornaments that when shaken up, the flakes could be seen swirling in unseen currents. Hillary watched the blizzard from room, it came with nature's determination, that primal force that conquers until its energy is released. She swiftly exited from the library room and walked out of the house into the blizzard.

Frosted air forced it's way into her lungs and stung her eyes. But she didn't care at all. She kept walking forward in the all white storms. She found a strange familiarness in those wind one would find painful. Open her eyes which had gone blurry by the snow, she found a source of light.

"Kai.." As she muttered the three lettered word, she saw an image in front of his eyes. The figure was almost invisible in the snowstorm, but two amethysts glistened among those. A hand was extended towards her and the bells of Christmas were ringing to bid them goodbye. It was the greatest sound winter could offer. She gladly accepted the hand and closing her eyes with a broad, contented smile on her face, she let herself fade into nirvana. Any other person would call it a hallucination, but she knew it was him. Her love. He had come to fetch her and free her of all sorrows. She was made for him and him for her, their reunion was inevitable.

I wanna hold you while the bells are all ringing

Want you to be here while the angel's singing

Days are perfect when I got you near

My only wish is you here

Wherever you go, you light up the room

I hope that you'll make it back home soon

'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you

Wherever you are, you brighten the moon

I hope that you'll make it back home soon

'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you
