"Everyone ready?"

"Yes sir."

The North Pole was unusually busy for the middle of June. Elves were rushing all over the place, Double and triple checking everything to make sure it was perfect. For today was quite the important day, it being the first time in nearly four-hundred years that a new Santa had been selected. And whenever a new Santa was chosen, it was the job of the number two elf to go and personally make sure that he was indeed going to be a good fit to take over the position.

The head elf Bernard turned away from watching the elves rushing about to face the elf standing beside him.

"Are you sure you're ready to do this."

The other elf laughed and shook her head. "Of course I'm ready for this B. I've only done it every other time this happened."

He let his face morph into a small smile before an expression of concern crossed over his features. "I know you have, it's just that-"

"B listen to me." She cut him off, lifting a finger to his lips to make him stop talking. "I know you're worried, but trust me. I know what I'm doing. Curtis will be able to manage to position of number two while I'm gone, and since I'm also head of child monitoring I know a lot more about what life is like outside the pole than a lot of the other elves here. Besides, I'll only be gone for 16 years at the most, and I'll be sending in constant updates. I'll be back before you know it."

Bernard let out a sigh once she removed her finger. "Okay just, be careful alright?"

She laughed again. "I will be, I promise."

"All stations are go number two! Time to get going!" An elf shouted.

"Be right there!" The female elf shouted right back before turning to Bernard one last time. "That's my cue. See you in a few years B." She quickly stood up on her toes to peck the worried head elf on the cheek before running off.

"Yeah." Bernard said, watching her go. "See you in a few years."

Despite all her reassurances, he couldn't quite shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong.

Everything was running smoothly. The teleport was quickly programmed without a hitch, location set and ready to go. Only thing left now was to step up to the teleport, power it up, and she would be directly transported to the home of the newly selected Santa Claus.

Quentin, the elf in charge of research and development, came up to the number two elf with a smile.

"You've got everything you need right?"

"Yes Quentin. I've been through this before I know what to do."

"Alright then." He nodded at her, before turning to the elves at the teleport controls. "Power it up, elves. We're set to go."

The machine began to whir and glow as it powered up, and the female elf was quick to step on the platform. The feeling of being about to teleport still being as familiar and exciting as all her previous trips. That is, until something started to feel slightly off.

"That's not right", she muttered to herself before calling out to Quentin, the smallest note of panic evident in her voice. "I think there's something wrong."

But before she could ever hear the elf in front of her reply, the north pole disappeared from her sight, and everything went black.
