Chapter 1 - Forsaken Son

Iroh was having a pleasant day, despite it being rainy. He actually enjoyed the rain, particularly how it made the outside world smell nice, and how the raindrops lightly tapped on the roof of his home. That was the way he was; Iroh enjoyed the many little things about life, like the weather, animals, places, people, and even the household chores he did around his home. For example, getting groceries, which was what he was preparing to do.

Iroh lived in a two-story house, on his own private property. The house had a Japanese architectural style, was surrounded by a courtyard with several large trees, and was guarded by a large gate and wall. Having gotten his umbrella, Iroh went out the front door his house, closed the door behind him, locked it, and then went walking through the courtyard. Humming a merry tune to himself, he opened the gate, went through it, closed and locked it, and then started walking down the sidewalk.

Iroh was man of fifty years of age. He had a bald head, pale skin, a brown beard that was slowly turning grey, and orange colored eyes. Despite his age and short stature, he was actually surprisingly muscular. His clothing at the moment consisted of a dark red rain hat, a dark red raincoat, black pants, and dark red boots. His umbrella was black, and had tan Japanese floral print on it.

A few minutes of walking on the sidewalk, and Iroh made it to a bus stop, where he boarded a bus that rolled up to it after a few minutes. The bus then doors closed, and drove on into the city of Musutafu. There, Iroh got off at another bus station and, after a couple more minutes of walking, he made it to the grocery store. There, he spent an hour collecting groceries he wanted, and then paying for them at the cashier. He then left the grocery store with the groceries in a bag, but then he stopped and paused.

His hearing picked up the sobbing of a child, and he began following the noise of the cries. He then came upon the crying child, who was sitting near. The crying child was a boy, about six years old. He had dark red hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. His clothing consisted of a grey t-shirt, a blue rain jacket, black pants, and blue and red sneakers.

Iroh felt pity for the child, and asked, "Hey, are you alright, young boy?"

"My mom's gone…" the little boy cried. "I can't find her…"

"Oh dear…" Iroh replied, his tone concerned. "Uh… maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?"

The little boy sniffed, and said, "She has white hair…"

"White hair." Iroh said to himself, trying to remember if he saw a lady with white hair in the grocery store. "White hair… I'm sorry, but I didn't see any ladies with white hair, except ones that were old enough to be your grandmother. How about I take you home?"

"You would?" asked the little boy, his tone hopeful.

"Sure thing. Where do you live?"

"In a big house down the street."

"I'm afraid I'm going to need a little more than that. Maybe I can find it with your family name…"

"Toshiro…" The boy replied innocently.

Iroh chuckled and replied, "No, no… your last name."

"Oh… Todoroki…"

"Todoroki. Okay, let's see if we can find the home of the Todoroki's."

The boy, Toshiro, got up and began walking with Iroh, who put the umbrella over both of them. They began walking down the city streets, with Iroh deciding to check the local neighborhoods for the boy's home. If the boy was left around the grocery store, his house might not be far from there. That was what Iroh was hoping for at the moment.

"What's your name?" Toshiro asked innocently.

"Iroh." Iroh replied, his tone friendly. "Nice to meet you, Toshiro."

"Same here, sir."

As they continued walking, Toshiro became gradually less afraid, and chatted with Iroh as they walked. Little did Iroh know, that this young boy whom he made friends with, would later look to him for advice and support…

What Iroh learned from Toshiro's chattering, was that his father was Endeavor, the number two pro hero. So, finding Endeavor's home was actually pretty easy, now that he knew who the boy's father was. He also earned that Toshiro had brothers and a sister, and he had an older twin brother named Shoto, whom his father liked a lot. Another thing he learned was that Toshiro had a fire quirk, but was having a hard time controlling it. He couldn't really create fire to a large degree, only small flames of white fire from his fingers or hands.

It had stopped raining, and Iroh was able to walk without holding the umbrella, despite it being overcast. Soon, the two came to the Todoroki household. Unfortunately, upon heading through towards the house, they heard a loud and angry yelling from a male voice, then crying from a female voice.

"That's my dad…" Toshiro spoke, his tone worried.

Iroh stepped in front of Toshiro protectively, wondering if it was a really good idea to return the boy to his parents. If there was abuse going on in the household, he wanted to keep the boy from getting harmed. But Iroh was quirkless, one of the rare people who never really developed a quirk. And even if he did have a quirk, he wouldn't be able to use it; there were certain rules and guidelines to follow.

The door opened, and a girl came from the house. She was thirteen, and she had white hair with flecks of crimson, fair skin, and turquoise colored eyes. Her attire consisted of red reading glasses, a peach colored t-shirt, blue pants, and black flip-flops.

"Hello… can I help you?" The girl asked, her tone nervous.

"Hello…" Iroh greeted, trying not to sound tense. "I brought your brother back…"

Iroh moved out of the way, revealing Toshiro, who was standing behind him.

"Toshiro!" The girl yelled, running up and hugging her little brother. "Are you okay? Where were you? Mom said that you ran away!"

"I didn't run away, Fuyumi…" Toshiro replied, his tone worried. "I just couldn't find her…"

"What's going on?" A gruff voice asked from inside the house.

The door opened, and Endeavor, the number two pro hero, appeared. He was tall, with a muscular build, had crimson colored hair, and turquoise colored eyes. He also had a beard and mustache that appeared to be made of fire, and his clothes consisted of a black t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and black boots. Upon seeing his son, a shocked look came upon his face.

"Toshiro…" Endeavor spoke, like he hadn't seen his son in a long time.

"Dad!" Toshiro yelled out, racing to hug his father.

However, his father didn't respond to the hug, and instead walked over to Iroh. Iroh felt both a mix of dread and anger, as this man clearly ignored his son. The feeling got worse when Iroh noticed that, through the open door of the house, there was a woman kneeling the floor, crying. The woman had white hair…

"Thank you for bringing my son back." said Endeavor, his tone showing no emotion.

"Sure thing." Iroh replied.

"I expect that you want some kind of a reward or something."

"No need for a reward; I'm a father, so I know how it feels to worry about your son when he's lost."

Endeavor grunted, and then turned around and said, "Fuyumi, Toshiro, let's go inside."

The daughter, Fuyumi, went back inside, a worried look on her face. As for Toshiro, he stayed outside for a few seconds to speak with Iroh.

"Thank you for bringing me home, Mr. Iroh." said Toshiro, his tone grateful.

"You welcome, Toshiro." Iroh replied.

"Will I see you again?"

"I don't know. Probably, but you never can be to sure…"

"Okay. Goodbye sir…"

"Goodbye, my young friend…"

"Toshiro! Get in here, now!" Endeavor called out.

"Okay!" Toshiro replied, before running to the house.

The door closed, leaving Toshiro standing outside. With a sad sigh, he began walking away. There was definitely some turmoil going on in that house, and poor little Toshiro was going to affected by it at some point. Iroh hoped that he would see the boy again, or maybe become a friend of the family, just so he could watch over him.

Iroh did have a son before, but he died in an accident a long time ago. His wife soon followed, due to heartbreak. Iroh would've died as well, but he felt that needed to live his life, and not be grieving forever. In fact, it was grieving that killed his wife, so he didn't want to be next! And Toshiro reminded him a lot of his son, which is why he wanted to help him…

He didn't know if he would see the kid again; only time would tell…

It turned out that Toshiro was actually abandoned by his mother, who couldn't take the fact that he looked so much like his father. Because of this, Endeavor beat her. Not only that, but she had kept him separate from his brothers and sister, just like Endeavor was doing with Shoto. The only difference was that she was doing it because, she didn't want Toshiro to hurt his siblings. But Toshiro wasn't like that; he would never hurt his brothers or sister. Shoto was different though, as Toshiro was jealous of him.

Because Toshiro couldn't properly control his quirk, his father deemed him a failure, and moved on to Shoto. And Shoto proved to be the 'golden child', so to speak, as he had both his mother's ice, and his father's fire. However, the training that Endeavor put him through was more of abuse than training, and his mother would often rush to her son's aid.

And Toshiro would be left alone; his parents didn't care for him. The only ones who actually cared for him were his siblings, and Iroh. Toshiro hoped he would see Iroh again, as he liked him, and thought he was a good guy.

Seven Years Later…

A lot had happened over those seven years, but what happened a few days after Toshiro was brought back, was a defining point. Toshiro's mother had scalded Shoto with boiling hot water, which ended up getting her put in a mental hospital. As for Shoto, he forgave his mother, and blamed Endeavor for driving her to it. So, a hatred for his father grew from there. As for Toshiro, having grown up without any attention from his father, who gave it all to his older twin brother, a hatred for Shoto had developed. The hatred was one-sided, as Shoto would often try to be nice with his brother. But, the niceness was only met with disdain…

Things were tense in the Todoroki household from then on; A war from all sides was being raged, with only Fuyumi and Natsuo, one of the other brothers, being the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Shoto would go after Endeavor, Toshiro would go after Shoto, and things were just a mess. There was almost no peace in the household, and it was driving everyone over the edge!

There was, however, one peaceful moment that occurred, and that was Toshiro's birthday.

One thing that Toshiro showed interest in was katana wielding. Having seen a samurai movie on TV one night, he began emulating the sword movements. Soon, most days he would pretend that he was a brave warrior, and would wield anything that looked like a sword as one. Brooms, mops, sticks, they all became swords to him, and he would pretend to do different sword fighting moves!

One day, while he was fiddling with a broom and pretending it was a sword, his quirk activated and it burnt the broom! Endeavor, after putting the fire out, became convinced that wielding a katana was how his son could use his quirk. And that gave him an idea on what to give for his son's thirteenth birthday.

…..

"This is for you." said Endeavor, handing a wrapped box to thirteen-year-old Toshiro.

Toshiro had grown into a young teenager, and still looked pretty much the same; He had dark red hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. However, he was now taller, leaner, and little bit muscular. At the moment, his clothing consisted of a dark blue t-shirt, black sweatpants, and he was barefoot.

Toshiro, who was sitting at the dinner table, tore the wrapping off the box and opened it. Inside, it was a katana! It had a red guard, a white handle, and it was in a black sheath. When Toshiro pulled it out of the sheath to look at it, the blade was a silver color.

"That is not a toy; it's the real thing." Endeavor spoke, his tone showing no emotion. "I went to a blacksmith, and had that sword custom made for you. It should help you produce fire, as you can use it as a channeler for your quirk."

Toshiro then held the sword in both his hands, and activated his quirk! Suddenly, the sword blazed to life, with white fire coming from the blade! Fuyumi and Natsuo, who were sitting at the table with Toshiro, looked on in amazement! After half a minute, Toshiro turned off his quirk, and the sword returned to normal; if he did it any longer, he probably would've burned the house down!

"Wow! This is awesome!" Toshiro spoke, his tone excited. "Thanks, Dad!"

"I've also hired a trainer to teach you how to wield that." Endeavor replied. "He's comes tomorrow afternoon, so you better be prepared."

"Oh don't worry! I will!"

However, Toshiro's excitement faded when Shoto stepped into the room. Due to what was going on between him and his father, Shoto mostly kept himself isolated from his family. He would train with Endeavor, but it was only so that he could prove himself better than his father.

"Why aren't you training?" Endeavor asked, his tone rough sounding.

"I'm getting some water." Todoroki replied, getting a glass for the cupboard. "Nice katana, Toshiro."

As he watched his brother, the feelings of hatred resurfaced in Toshiro's mind. He may not have a fancy quirk like his brother, but he was going to prove that he was better than him! Toshiro would show them, he would show them all! He wasn't a failure; just because he couldn't control his quirk like his father could, didn't mean that he couldn't do what they could!

He would become a hero, an even greater hero than his twin brother and father!

The next day, during the afternoon, the sword trainer came to teach Toshiro how to wield a katana. To Toshiro's surprise and delight, it was Iroh.
