I don't own Divergent. Any recognizable character belongs to Veronica Roth.

Harmony was already awake early when her mother came into her bedroom. She was french fishtail braiding her hair so that it didn't get in her way when she chose the warrior faction.

"You're up early." Harmony's mother spoke and a soft voice. Her ocean blue eyes were as gentle as ever. "Are you ready for the ceremony?"

"Yeah, I am." Harmony's chocolate brown eyes memorized her mother's face. She knew she might never see the woman who had raised her once she defected to Dauntless.

Together the two women left their home, former home for Harmony, to make their way to the choosing ceremony. Harmony and her two friends sat together on the bus. They followed the rules and didn't talk about their test results but all three knew they wouldn't see each other for a long time.

What seemed like minutes later Harmony was walking into the hub with her mother and best friends. Her mouth felt impossible dry and she felt her heartbeat in her throat. This was it. Soon all sixteen year olds would choose their faction and either make it in said faction or become factionless.

Harmony sat with her mother in the amity section. Her brown eyes were focused on the five bowls. It was Erudites turn to host the choosing ceremony.

Jeanine Matthews began with the usual speech about the choosing ceremony and what it stood for. She then began calling names. Harmony zoned out until they called Grace.

"Grace Summers." The redhead got up from her seat and made her way down to the podium. To the bowls. Jeanine handed Grace a knife. Grace slit her hand and held her bleeding hand over a bowl filled with soil. Amitys bowl.

"Amity." Jeanine called out. The Amity section clapped as Grace made her way back to their section.

Jeanine cycled through more names. Harmony's eyes caught sight of Thomas's. He gave her a reassuring glance. He knew she'd be choosing before him and knew she would transfer about a year into his friendship with her.

"Harmony Lyra." Harmony snapped to attention. Had Jeanine already cycled through that many names?

Harmony stood up and made her way down to the podium. She could see a new knife waiting for her. This was it. This was the start of leaving behind everything she knew.

The dark haired sixteen year old took the silver gleaming knife from Erudites leader. With a deep breath she cut her hand and held it over her choice. The burning coals that represented Dauntless. A sizzling sound was heard as her blood hit the hot coals.

"Dauntless." Harmony heard the Dauntless faction go into an excited uproar as she walked to her new factions section.

"Welcome to Dauntless!" A dauntless born said as they clapped her on the back with a wide grin. Harmony sat next to a transfer wearing blue and a dauntless member.

The ceremony continued with Thomas choosing Abnegation. That choice surprised Harmony. She'd been so sure he'd join Candor, and if not Candor then Erudite at the very least.

There was no more time to think about it. The choosing ceremony was over and it was time to run. The Dauntless sprinted till they left the hub and kept sprinting. Harmony ran as fast as she could with her new faction. Her braid flew behind her in the wind with every stride she took. She climbed with practiced ease up to the train tracks where she waited for the train.

The train was fast approaching and soon every Dauntless member and hopeful member ran alongside the train. Harmony watched some members jump onto the train and quickly realized that if she wanted to make it into Dauntless she'd have to do the same.

Pushing herself faster Harmony leaped at the train cart nearly missing it and pulled herself in. She panted as she'd never had to keep up the brutal pace while running before. She sat on the floor her back to a wall as more people jumped on while some missed the train entirely and were now factionless. She'd made it for now.
