Comment: This was inspired by the flashback at the beginning of 3x20! This is set before and then after Barney is hit by a bus on his way to the hospital to see Ted. Please enjoy and review! :-)
He answers her call on the first ring, asking, "What are you wearing?"
She rolls her eyes, ignoring the question. "Ted just told me about the Bruce Springsteen tickets."
"Pardon?"
"Ted wanted to take me to a Springsteen concert last year. You tore up the tickets so he wouldn't mess with the 'date-time continuum'."
"Oh, did I? I do so much awesome stuff, I can't remember all of it," he informs her.
"You owe me," Robin insists.
"Fine. What are you op to Friday night, Scherbatsky? Drinks, dinner, show on me?"
"... What show?"
He lights up at her indirect agreement. "I'll see what's on."
"Okay," she says and hangs up.
He finds it hard to keep the impossibly happy smile off his face that afternoon. Until Lily calls him from the hospital.
Later, Robin's the last to leave Barney's hospital bed. They've given him medications to help him sleep, and as he's slowly drifting off, he says her name.
"Yeah, Barney?"
"I might not make it this Friday..." he half-jokes, and her heart breaks a bit.
"I'll let you off the hook for now," she smiles bravely. "Get better first, okay?"
He's already asleep when she bursts into tears.
