At first, Robin doesn't even notice the slight change in Barney's behaviour.

It's not the flirting that gives it away. It's not the way he orders a Dirty Martini and hands it to her, a sparkle in his eyes and a smile on his lips.

No, it's something much less obvious.

It's the way he says her last name. "Scherbatsky," he would greet her every night at MacLaren's, air and lust woven between the consonants and vowels.

Her own name suddenly sounds to her like a song, like a surge of waves, like fifty-year-old scotch poured over ice.

It's mesmerising.
