I'd basically always known Mrs. Hamilton's. I've never really remembered my parents or not, they probably weren't coming back for me, so I didn't worry about it. Everything was always the same there. You did chores and that was all.
But one day when I was about nine or ten, somebody new came to the boy's orphanage next door. I remember we all tried to see him, but he was too sneaky and got into too much trouble. After his first week, I decided there were other things to do, so I went back to doing chores. Mrs Hamilton noticed how hard I worked and gave me a few garlins as a reward.
I made my way to the shops when I was met by Mellony.
"I hear you have some coins," Mellony announced and held out her hand. "Give them to me."
"Go away! I earned them," I snapped back, and because I was so focused on Mellony, I didn't see the other kids come out of the alleys. One of them pulled my hair and the other one punched me in the gut… and they stole my coins.
I try not to cry, but that time I burst into tears. I felt somebody's hand on my shoulder and looked up. I'd never seen this boy before and here he was, trying to be my friend.
"That wasn't very kind of them," he said as he pointed to Mellony.
I shook my head, "I-i-i-it wasn't. I worked hard for those."
The boy held out his hands, and they were full of garlins. "I worked hard for these, want to share?"
"I don't even know your name…"
"Call me Sage! Who are you?"
A big smile broke across my face. "I'm Fiona, thanks for er coming. I don't have many friends."
Sage laughed, "What a coincidence, neither do I. You can be my friend, for a price."
My smile washed away, and I scowled as hard as I could. "What kind of price?"
"I haven't decided yet if I'm being completely honest," he might've been joking but I couldn't tell. "Come help me snag more garlins, and then we'll talk about what you owe me."
I didn't have any better option. I'd never stolen before, but Sage gave me a few tips and pointers. It didn't take very long for me to discover that I was actually really good at stealing, so Sage and I would team up whenever we could, and celebrate our victories with some baked treats we bought with our stolen money.
Sage became my very best friend. We spent every day together making plans for a future together and stealing things so we could afford that future together. We wanted a nice house with a big garden with two seperate sides so we could decorate it the way we wanted. As time progressed, I realized just how badly I wanted to spend my future with him. I wanted to live my life with Sage.
I wanted to tell him how I felt, that he was my very best friend. I searched everywhere in the orphanage, but nobody knew where he went or what happened. I stopped asking about him and assumed he must've died or ran away.
Either way, it meant that he hadn't cared enough about me to tell me where he was going. I did my best to forget him, until five years later.
Five years later I learned that Sage had never been his real name; my best friend was Jaron, and he was the king now.
He was king and he hadn't bothered to remember my name. I cried into my pillow that night when I realized that. Jaron, Sage, whoever he was never cared for me the same way that I'd cared for him. He was continuing his life with somebody new now, somebody that wasn't me.
And I'd foolishly joined a mission to save her.
