Sinnoh. Region of myths, legends, and ancient history. A region split into two parts in many different ways. Mount Coronet with an average altitude of 2100m above sea level and splits Sinnoh in half, extending from the cold and unforgiving wild in the north to the sandstone shores in the south. It is a labyrinth of caves, tunnels, mountainous highlands and foggy mountain passes. The mountain chain is intricately linked with Pokémon's and humans alike.
Climate is another factor splitting the region. While due to Mt. Coronet rain is seemingly equally distributed over the east and west parts of Sinnoh excluding Great Marsh and the surrounding wetlands which have been formed based on folklore by the abundance of Quagsire's dancing for rain.
The east is generally portrayed as the more touristy area with milder winters, warm summers and large cities while the west and especially the northern parts of westerns Sinnoh are cold and harsh. Snowpoint City is home to the highest snow days per year throughout our world with a whooping 209 days a year.
I am from a small village just north of Floaroma Town but south of Eterna forest. It is not a big community if we would include the grazing Tauros and Miltank we might reach a count of 200. It was a 30min drive to Floaroma and I took it everyday to go to school. Trainer school to be exact.
Yeah. Just like so many of my peers I want to be go out into the world and become a Pokémon Trainer. I didn't have the illusion that I would be good enough to join the conference and have a shot at the Elite Four and the undefeated Champion Cynthia, just like so many of my classmates.
If I am going to be honest, I didn't want to become a Pokémon trainer originally. I did quite a lot of research on the different types and their respective strength and weaknesses but none of them caught my interest.
Becoming a generalist also didn't catch my attention it just seemed like so much work. If I am going on my journey I would want to specialise in a type or in a common theme amongst my Pokémon.
During our time at school, we got introduced to many varieties of Pokémon's. Mainly first stages and the occasional fully evolved Pokémon. I quite enjoyed lessons on their biology and maybe I will pursue this interest after my journey.
It was the week after my 16th birthday and two weeks after our Trainer License Exams. I passed quite well in the upper 10th percentile. Normally people start their journey from 12-13 onwards and keep going till there are around 18 or early twenties.
I just didn't see the point of leaving home so early and I wouldn't have been able to possibly travel with my friend. Currently I am looking over a sheet we have been given which lists the potential "starter" Pokémon we could choose from. Only around a dozen trainers are being selected to receive the Sinnoh starters and most of them get quite far in the career. The application process is said to be brutal though and that just didn't make me want to apply.
I looked onto the list.
Shellos, Starli, Bidoof, Kricketot, Burmy, Zubat, Geodude and Shinx.
Shellos is just goofy looking and I am abut creeped out by it if I am honest. Starli seems great and Staraptor can kick some serious butt but they are said to be very active needing much engagement. I would prefer a Pokémon which is more relaxed and grounded. I gave a short smirk.
Bidoofs are … unique. Very versatile but they seem to be on the lower end even for normal types. Their evolution Bibarel is goofy looking in a fun way and seems to enjoy lazing around. A maybe?
Kricketot and its evolution are kind of weak even for bug types but their melodies are supposed to be soothing and might make good background noise for naps. I will take it into consideration.
Burmy nope. Had an infestation of them 2 years ago creepy little things.
Caves and even some dark forests are plagued by hordes of Zubat's. I am quite smitten with them even when so many see them as pests. Golbat is supposed to be pretty cool but I read that Crobat's are hard to train and have vicious streak. Seems like work.
I gave out a groan why do so many Pokemons do that. Can't they just stay in their lethargic and mostly serene first stage mood. Grandma sometimes swears I must have been a slowpoke in my last life. Seems like a nice life. Lazing on a beach and walking at a slow pace throughout the region. What a dream.
Rock types are sturdy and are relatively passive excluding the Larvitar line. Even a Steelix has more chill than a Tyranitar no idea why they are not classified as Dragons. Geodude's evolutionary line is known for its heigh defensives and powerful but slow attacks.
I am sorry Shinx but you seem like such a normie choice. Like every girl will try to go for one that means a lot of competition and nasty looks if you mange to score one. Troublesome.
Glancing at my clock I saw that almost an hour has passed, and I have still no idea and the submission date is tomorrow. My head fell on the desk and I groaned. Why is it so difficult? Can't they just give us one? I exhaled blowing some loose notes away.
Maybe if I would know what I actually want out of this journey I might know what to pick. I spun around my chair and looked at the map of Sinnoh on the ceiling, directly above my bed. First GYM is going to be Eterna City. After that I really want to explore parts of Mt. Coronet instead like 90% to just quickly go through it. Maybe I will find a Chingling. That would be cool. Its screeching might cause problems though but I bet we can find a reasonable solution to that problem.
From the mountains I can either go to Hearthome and get my back handed to me by Phantina. Ignore Hearthome and go to Veilstone. Or I head north towards Snowpoint. Hmmmm.
I don't fancy my chances against Fantina at all she is after Volkner the most difficult and most notorious for crushing peoples dreams and aspirations for joining the conference. Veilstone will just be filled with people and noise. Nah. Isolation and freezing temperatures it is. After that I could ttake a boat to Sunnyshore and see what I do from there. Volkner and Fantina are definitely my last attempts if I get that far.
So immediate GYMs are Grass and Ice. Sorry Zubat and Geodude but no this might cause to many problems. I should kick Kricketot out as well but the heavenly napping songs. Should I really risk it. What did Grandpa say no risk no reward?
… Kricketot congratulation you are going to be my partner. I am pretty certain that has never happened since the inception of the Trainer School. I circled my choice and put the paper into my bag. Looking out of my window I saw the sunset bathing the farm and surrounding land in soft red and orange tones. Some Dustox were stirring near the trees probably getting ready for their nightly adventures.
Already? Grabbing my camera hung by its strap near the door I headed down the stairs and out of the front door aiming for the trees. Max my grandpa's Tauros saw me and followed me. Ever since I can remember Max was always watching out for me. Might has something to do with the fact that I was brought to the farm at the same day his young's hatched. Since that day Max became my silent guardian when I headed into the small woodland behind the farmhouse to take snaps at the Dustox performing the aerial dance during sunset.
Photography was amazing. The ability to capture emotions, intent, beauty and horror in an image is in my opinion one of the most powerful ways of communicating. My grandparents often tell me, that during my travels I should make photos and send them to them as a way to tell my tale.
What tale would they tell? A simple story of ambition? The realisation to fight against insurmountable odds? The classic tale of the underdog? Or a story of exploration? So many potential tales and I will only know the final answer after I experienced it.
I stuck around for around one hour or two observing the beautiful dance. The grace and elegance in their simple display was unmatched even by the most acrobatic maneuverers I have seen during televised contests. That is something I want to do. Show the world the beauty of simplicity.
You don't need grand ambitions or dream amongst the stars. Just following the road of life might yield surprising results. As it grew colder and a thick fog started to seep in I headed back inside and upstairs into my room.
I let gravity do the work for me and plunged onto my bed. A loud creaking sound echoed through my room. Tomorrow would be the day. Sinnoh here I come.
The smell of breakfast woke me up. Dragging my arm with all my willpower towards me to stare at the time nearly made me fall asleep again. 7:39am 11 minutes before the bus would be here. Perfect timing. I don't want to brag but over the years of living with my grandparent I was able to optimize my morning routine of showering, brushing my teeth and eating a health breakfast in 10 minutes and 32 seconds making me leave out of the front door just as the buss pulls up.
The door opened and I gave the driver a smile and headed inside. So much chattering. I guess the excitement runs high. Sitting down at my usual spot in the 7th row next to the window, I wanted to enjoy my moments of peace before the cacophony named school would begin when a girl with a slender built, around 5 foot 4, brown hair bound in a ponytail and green eyes plopped down next to me. Grinning from ear to ear.
Victoria … Annoying, loud, troublesome, want to become a normal type specialist Victoria. My best friend. Received the nickname Hurricane Victoria from my grandmother as she left chaos in her wake. I always chuckle at that name.
"Hey sleepyhead. Ready for the big day?" I gave her a tired look. It is to early to deal with the bubbly personality of hers.
"Come on. Don't leave me hanging. We are best friends. Are you ready?" She thrusted out her hand balled into a fist into the the air whole loudly proclaiming her last question.
Ugghhhhh
"Yes." Was my half-asleep reply. Victoria shook my shoulders.
"Hey don't you dare go back to sleep!" Her face grew secretive. Oh, boi here we go. In a hushed whisper she asked the question most people knew a week ago.
"Which Pokémon did you choose. Tell me. Tell me now." I gave her a half-lidded glance and let my head slump against the window mumbling some words which weren't audible.
Victoria gave a huff crossed her arms and started to pout. She seems to have forgotten this hasn't worked since 5 years. Cute though.
"Well thank you for asking. I choose Bidoof."
"What a surprise. Must have taken you ages to decide." I gave her a teasing grin. She countered with a stare trying to look intimidating and the rest of the ride was spent with her telling me about the unique quirks of the Bidoof line and what team she wants to build around her starter.
Victoria was quite knowledgeable about the whole teambuilding aspect and specialist training. Her mother and her father were both trainers who manged to beat all 8 GYMs and her mother was ranked 8th out of 24 during her conference attempt. Her father has opened a herb shop which some of the higher ranked trainers like Aces regularly visit so I assume he worked with the Aces for some time.
Arriving at Floaroma's School for Pokémon Trainer, unimaginative I know. I grabbed my backpack, hoisting it over my shoulders and headed for my classroom. Dropping my choice sheet into the box and sitting down at my desk waiting for the day to begin.
Today and tomorrow, we would have all school day to familiarise ourselves with out partner which we should hopefully receive today. The excitement was touchable in this room. 27 students impatiently awaiting to meet their partners. Our teacher Mr. Barbic entered the room and checked the submission box first giving a small chuckle. He turned around and spoke.
"It seems that Dale has finally graced us with his choice" Some sniggers but they know me since 1st grade I always turn in last. He then looked at my sheet and blinked. Once. Twice. Looking up from it at me, giving me a questioning glance before continuing.
"We will assemble in the auditorium in 5 minutes and I will call out your name and you will step forward towards the Pokémon species you have selected and make a choice don't worry we have a surplus to make sure everyone has a choice."
I do not believe they have a surplus of Kricketot's. There is always one. A bell rung and students jumped from their seats practically ready to storm to the auditorium. We got told to pair up and walk in a line orderly towards the hall. The formation was left intact for as long we were in the field of view of our esteemed teacher.
All hell broke loose as we went around the corner. Students started sprinting, pushing and stumbling towards the room where their partners await them. Victoria and me where at then end as it didn't make any sense to be first but ehh who cares.
We made out ways to the hall. It was a large room with 6 league standard battlefields. At the far end of the room stood group of rangers surrounding them was a plethora of our starter Pokémon's. Excitement rang through most of them and many especially the Shinx seemed overjoyed.
Only one Kricketot though. It looked sad. As if knowing its chances of being picked were slim. It shook its tiny head making the antennas collide and producing high keyed notes sounding mostly like a xylophone but there was a melody hidden in it.
Taking up a spot a bit away from the main bulk of students I continued to observe the Kricketot. It seemed to produce that sound every time someone of the big group would look in its directions. It got some glances but was quickly overshadowed by other Pokémon's.
Its antenna started to lower themselves and sadness seemed to emanate from it. I got you buddy. I think I made a right choice. Let's see. I hummed a slow copy of its previous melody. The reaction was immediate. Antenna shot up and his tiny head swivelled searching in the main group for the one humming. I chuckled. Humming louder it turned towards me and out eyes met.
How should I describe this feeling? It seems like I have found my partner. One look into its eyes and I knew we would be inseparable. I jumped happily up and down creating a new melody and a ranger turned around and gave me a searching look before it gave way to curiosity and relief I think. He walked over in my direction.
He was a young adult with brown hair, blue eyes a muscular build further emphasised by his tight clothing and on his head was a old style cowboy hat some people wear when riding Tauros.
"You seem quite interested in our little friend. I have to say I never expected someone to go for him. Sadly, Kricketot's seem to be not in popular demand. Why did you choose one?"
Is he asking out of interest? Trying to see if I play with the little guys feelings? What is his angle?
"To be honest I think they are kind of sweet and their musical ability might aid in helping others in the team."
"Their weak strength doesn't bother you at all. You will not be able to take him into anything more than the 4th GYM battle."
"That is just plain insulting while the little guy would be a at a disadvantage. I have seen Minun's in conference matches while not the same typing if he wants to fight and we make it that far he will fight."
I gave him a cold stare.
"Objectifying Pokémon based on their combat ability seems pretty stupid to me. Becoming a renowned Trainer isn't the only career option that could stem from a journey. His songs might be great in calming down children or such I decide to teach, or they could be used to lure scared Pokémon's into the open. Reducing a Pokémon's worth just based on their potential poor combat performance is not the kind of person I want to be. In the end I will decide how I want to go through Sinnoh and no one can tell me what partners I should choose."
His faced brightend up.
"Interesting choice of words. I will keep an eye out for you." With that he turned away and went back to other rangers. I continued focusing on Kricketot listening to its song and humming along. A voice piped up. Mr. Barbic has arrived and silence the chattering.
"Everyone we will start in the order of most popular to leas popular species. Get ready."
Shinx, Starli, Shellos, Geodude, Bidoof, Zubat and then Kricketot. The poor guy seemed to immediately get very anxious. I continued humming its song which seemed to calm him, I really hope it is him but based on a cursory glance I think he is.
Everything went kind well. When Victoria went up and was tackled to the ground by one overzealous Bidoof I think I just observed a match made in heaven. Both seem to have infinite reserves of energy. She almost glowed in happiness and gave me smile when she seemed to realise that only Zubat's and the Kricketot were left.
A quick headcount ensued, and her mouth fell open. I gave her smirk. During the Zubat pick others seemed to pick up on that I wouldn't choose a Zubat. Some chattering begun.
Then it was my turn. I walked towards the little guy still humming its tune. He seemed to vibrate in absolute joy and excitement. I went into a crouch and slowly reached out with my hands. Stopping a couple of centimetres before Kricketot. After he gave a small nod, I picked him up and sat him on my shoulder, where he hummed happily this time imitating me.
Both of us joined the crowd again and Victoria and her Bidoof gave me a look.
"While you will have no normal lessons for the upcoming days, I urge to use this time wisely and get to know our new partner. Have fun everyone." With that immediate challenges were thrown left and right. Time to head away.
Leaving the hall, I picked up his Poke Ball from the rangers and headed straight to the yard which housed a nice willow tree under which I started to make myself comfortable. Kricketot sat in my lap as I leaned back against the tree and looked up at me. Sunlight shone through the leaves bathing me and my new partner in warm golden rays.
"So, time for Introductions, I guess. I am Dale your new partner. My current goal is to earn two badges and after that we will see. What about you?"
The little man seemed to over the moon to have been picked and is just clapping his antenna together producing what I guess is a happy sound. I chuckled. The rhythm was fast but the sound soft it blended in perfectly with the swinging willow branches.
After a couple of moments, he chirped.
"Ready to talk?"
He nodded. Peculiar.
"So as you can not talk give me a low sound for no and a high sound for yes okay?"
A loud note rung from his antenna.
"Great. You are a boy, right?"
High.
"Do you want to travel?"
High.
"Do you fight?"
He looked sacred and gave me a low sound not meeting my eyes.
"Hey little man no problem we do things our way. We will travel how we want. You do not have to fight if you don't want to. My only goal is to travel around Sinnoh while getting badges sounds nice it is not our biggest goal."
He jumped at me almost teary. Arceus almighty, how do other people treat you. I held him tight and said in a soft voice.
"It is alright. We are partners now. Buddies. Friends. We will find something."
It took me several minutes to calm him down reassuring him that I won't leave him for the next best Pokemon. What did people tell you? Our piece and tranquillity were soon after destroyed as an energetic Bidoof and her even more energetic Trainer appeared. Crashing through the slowly swinging willow branches.
"DALE! There you are. Bidoof and I were looking for you. A Kricketot. You are indeed the most surprising Trainer of this school. How did you decide on it? You want to battle? Look at my adorable partner." The words and questions shot out of her mouth at supersonic speed.
Kricketot jumped to me side hiding himself from Hurricane Victoria. Such a smart guy.
"Hey Vic. Just thought I would suit my style. No, I don't want to battle the little one is still about surprised at today's event. And yes your partner is adorable indeed but mine cuter" I scratched him with two fingers on his back. Happy bug noises emanated from him. I would classify it as purring just for bugs.
She smiled.
"We can agree to disagree on that." She plopped down next to me and her Bidoof went onto her lap.
"So, what are your travelling plans?" There seemed to be hint of nervousness in her tone. Must be from all the excitement.
"I plan on heading from Route 205 into Eterna Forest and then try the GYM in Eterna City. From there I want to explore Mt. Coronet and head north to Snowpoint after that I have no real idea. Sounds like adventure though.
Victoria was silent for a couple of moments seemingly debating with herself. When she spoke again her tone was soft. I enjoy the sound of her voice. On of her redeeming qualities.
"You mind me tagging along?" I shrugged. She seemed down for a moment before I spoke.
"Sure why not. Would be kind of cool travelling together." Her smile turned up to an 11 and all the tension seemed to leave her.
"Great you want to come over at the weekend so we could do some last-minute shopping and such?"
I glanced towards Kricketot.
"What do you think partner. Wanna go shopping with me, Bidoof and Vic?"
Happy bug noises ensued. I take that as a yes. Victoria continues sitting next to me and Kricketot giving her Bidoof many scratches and head pats.
"See you in time for the buss Dale. Bidoof and me have training to do."
"Sure same here have fun."
She left but not before turning back halfway through the willow branches and giving me a big smile. My heart started to race.
Troublesome woman. I lay down on the ground and put Kricketot on by stomach.
"What should I do? I am fairly certain she like me." Approving sounds and a nod came from my partner. Even he seemed to realise it. Hurrican Victoria subtly is not your strength.
"I mean I do like her as well. Not just as my best friend. Would it be a mistake? If it goes wrong will the friendship stay?" Kricketots antenna hit me slightly in the face. And he started to puff himself up creating various noises and hoping up and down.
I am not a master in mime interpretation, but I think he is telling me I am thinking to much. I gave him some head pats.
"Look at use two we have met for 2 hours and you are already my self-named wingman. How about you show me your moves and I will see what we can do with that. The little bug seemed excited and jumped from my stomach onto the grass and wabbling a few feet away.
First, he hit his two antennae together and created a loud almost growl like sound which is actually pretty intimidating for his size. I gave him a nod. I can work with growl. He seemed to glow as if storing energy must be Bide. Situationally useful. Nodding again the glow receded and its antennae hit repeatedly against each other while his body started to vibrate. Many small little green lights surged from him and homed in on a waving willow branch snapping it off. Struggle Bug. While a special move it would have to do till, he evolves.
"That was amazing I didn't know you can perform Struggle Bug. If you ever want to fight this would make things easier for you."
Kricketot gleamed at my attention.
"What about a nickname?" Very happy bug noises.
A name for the little guy. Hmmm. I gave him a look over. Nothing physical immediately caught my attention. He is a small musician. Maybe something truly ancient.
"Mozart (shakes head), Beethoven (head shake) … Bach … (happy bug noises). Bach it is. Maybe you will also become a famous musician." Again, Kricketot gleamed at my words. Such an adorable little dude. I took out my book about Sinnoh's Pokémon and their distribution a heavy book. I opened the page showing Route 205 and Eterna Forest.
"This is a book showing other Pokémon we might encounter on our journey. I unfolded the picture list of Pokémon commonly found on those routes. Any of those seem good as teammates?"
He looked at me unsure if he was allowed to voice his opinion.
"Bach you are the first one of the team. That means you will have known me for the longest time giving you some decisions in what we are doing. As I said it is OUR journey. I made a vow that I will specialise in the type of Pokémon with which I started out as or we focus on a unifying theme that would be music and sound. Give me a high note for music or a low one for bug types."
Bach sat down and seemed to be deep in thought. Several moments later he gave me high note. Focus on music and sound using Pokémon it is.
I had several ideas. Circling Pokémon that would be known for the sound-based abilities. Chingling and Jigglypuff were the choices on the upcoming routes with Jigglypuff being very hard to find on Route 205 while Chinglings would be rather common around Eterna City.
Kricketot's antennae pointed at Jigglypuff. A fairy it is. I patted his head and checked the time. 20 minutes before schools over.
"You want to see if we can find Vic and observe some battles?"
Bach gave a acknowledging buzzing sound and I took him back onto my shoulder and off we went. Entering the hall again I saw many have stopped battling and are currently crowding around a fight. Victoria saw me and excitedly waved her hands.
"Dale you are ready for a fight?"
I glanced at Bach sitting on my shoulder. His head swung side to side before buzzing in acknowledgment. Here we go.
"Count me and Bach in." I headed towards an unoccupied field and sat Bach down crouching before him.
"We don't have to win. I don't care how it goes as long as we tried our best. Alright?" I held out my fist and received a bump back from his antennae.
"Lets go Bach."
My partner wabbled with surprising accuracy and speed in front of me. Victoria and her Bidoof stood opposite of us.
"Don't think you will win this like the training fights. This is me and my starter and we won't go down without a fight." She gave a determined smile that made my heart flutter for a bit. Never change Vic. Never change. I clapped twice with my hands against my cheeks and the Game was on.
"Ready!"
"Set!"
"GO!" Both of us said at the same time.
"Bidoof Tackle Kricketot. We have the advantage in speed." Bidoof surged forward heading straight for Kricketot. I was observing his reaction towards the oncoming Pokémon. No signs of retreat or fear. Good.
"Howl and try to step aside." Antennae hitting together producing a predatory growl making Bidoof lose some speed out of reflex, but he was still heading for Bach. Sidestepping clumsily Bidoof's Tackle didn't hit home.
"Follow up with another one don't let them think."
"Struggle Bug"
Again, Bidoof went for Bach but this time swarming green lights flew into his attack whirling up some dust which didn't seem to deter Bidoof has he tanked the hit and continued onwards this time hitting Kricketot and pushing him backwards via the momentum.
"Struggle Bug followed by Bide. Show them what you can do." Bidoof picked up momentum again aiming a Tackle yet again at Bach, but the Struggle Bug seemed to hold him back this time. Possibly accumulated exhaustion. Bach started to glow. Time was ticking.
"Growl and follow up with Tackle. We nearly got them." A miscall.
"Brave it and return it twofold." Unleashing a growl at Bach who seemed to focused to be distracted, with another Tackle Bidoor surged forward notably slower. Timing was most crucial. The glow around Bach seemed to reach its Zenith. In the last moment the Tackle hit home. Pushing Bach nearly out of bounds. The glow intensified and a small shockwave was unleashed towards Bidoof.
"Evade try to jump over it." Vic's Pokémon seemed to exhausted though and was swept out of the arena by the power of its doubled Tackle.
"Dale and Kricketot are the Winners." I walked towards Bach and picked him up he seems alright if not a bit bruised. Not the sturdiest little thing. Victoria ran over to her partner and praised him for his performance. He seemed to recover quite quickly.
"Do not think next time will be the same." I like your determination Vic. "I will challenge you even more during our travels. There will be not a single unused moment during our journey." She declared boldly and loud enough for most people to hear.
… Silence. Then chattering picked up again. A groan nearly escaped me. Hurricane Victoria strikes once again. I wanted to face palm. Did you just declare in front of this gossiping crowd that both of us are gonna travel together? The rumour mill is going to be crazy. While not unusual especially for younger trainers we are 16 and hormones do as hormones want. Controlling the behaviour and responses of so many of my classmates. Also am I the only one who thinks the 2nd sentence could be misinterpreted.? Or are that my own hormones speaking?
I received some thumbs up from some bois. Great.
"Let's go Vic. The bus is nearly here." Great save. Absolutely not suspicious at all. Bach gave of what I assume is a chuckle. Traitor. She gave me nod and off we went. Leaving a gossiping auditorium behind. Well, we only have to deal with this for the next week. It should be fine.
The bus ride was more chaotic than usual. Mainly attributed to most people having their Pokémon sitting of their lap. Bach did the same and I gave him some scratches trying to find spots that he likes. I found one spot. Directly between its antennae. He almost melted and gave very happy buzzing noises. Vic seemed very contemplative while Bidoof was fast asleep.
Arriving at the farm I wished Vic good evening and told her I was looking forward to the weekend. A big smile appeared on her face. I decided to stay home during the next couple of days spending my time showing Bach around. Saying thank you to the driver as I left, I headed towards the farm.
My grandparents and Max were outside waiting for me. Both seemed initially surprised seeing Bach on my shoulder, but grandma almost seemed to remember something. Did mom choose a similar Pokémon or made an unusual choice? Bach seemed intimidated by Max at first, but I got closer and stroked Max's back while he inspected the newest member of the family. He gave an approving huff and went back to the herd.
Grandpa signed that they are so happy for me to meet such a wonderful little guy. Signing back that he and I and also won our first battle drew some chuckles from both of them. Grandma gestured to the house and I followed. In the kitchen a feast was awaiting us.
I learned some interesting facts about Kricketot's. They are no vegetarians. Surprising, they are not the strongest of Pokémon. What would they hunt? I assume Metapod or the cocoons of the Wurmple line. Bach also seemed to have a black hole for a stomach making both of my grandparents give some small chuckles. I signed a bit about my plans over the week, meeting Victoria on the weekend and my initial plans for teammates.
Both were very interested especially when I talked about the idea to have a team based on musical Pokémon. Grandpa also gave me some advices to maybe include Pokémon which like to dance, and I could try this tactic during Contests. Never thought about joining a Contest but I found several ribbons showing wins of my grandfather and my mother.
After a filling dinner I wished them a goodnight and mentioned that I might try to show Bach, the dancing Dustox. But first he would see my room. I took him upstairs and opened the door to m room.
My room was maybe 18 square metres and was entirely wooden like most parts of the house. There was enough space for a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and chair just in front of a large window looking towards the edges of the forest. Kricketot jumped immediately on the bed on hoped up and down.
He was such a happy Pokémon what a 180 from what he has been during the selection ceremony. I grabbed my camera and asked if he wanted to join me, but Bach seemed busy building his nest out of some clothes that laid on the ground and putting them on my bed. I wished him good nest building and headed outside.
The cool evening air greeted me. Max already started to come over for the almost nightly ritual. I patted him on the back and headed towards the forest. Dustox were starting to stir and buzzed in excitement. Their buzzing was deeper than Bach's but not as melodious.
I managed to get some nice shots of two Dustox playing around with their Silver Winds before it got to cool for me to just remain outside. Heading back upstairs I saw one of the cutest things.
Bach had built himself a nest at the headend of the bed mainly composed from trousers and socks. A quiet melody echoed throughout my room created by his slightly twitching antennae. Taking several photos and checking for their quality I felt tiredness creeping in and got ready to go to bed. I tried not to disturb Bach and went to sleep.
Dreaming of our journey. Bach, me, Vic and here Bidoof against the world. A great dream.
The weekend approached quite soon and currently I found myself sitting next to Vic who shot me a glare and mumbled something of "lazy boys". It might have had something to do with me waking up 10 minutes ago with Hurricane Victoria nearly kicking in the door to my room. I went about my usual morning routine including a sassy commentary by Victoria. I dressed in blue shorts and a button up shirt while Vic wore a nice green summer dress.
No, I didn't stare … for too long.
We made it on time to the bus. I don't know why she is complaining. The annoyance at me quickly ebbed away and Vic was brimming with excitement.
"Have you made any thoughts about what to buy? I know I still need Potions, some Antidotes, Paralyse – Heals …. "Her list continued. This is gonna be along but fin day. "Ohhh and maybe we can look at some clothes?" She gave me a slightly nervous gaze with the last question.
"Yeah sounds good I want to look a for some training journals as well and I think you forgot Poke Balls on your list." Vic seemed to check her mental list and the change in her expression showed I was right.
"Good catch Dale. What would I have done without Poke Balls? By the way … Did you tell your grandparents that we would travel together?"
"Yop."
"How did they react?"
"Grandma seemed happy and told me that she can sleep soundly knowing I have another friend with me, and grandpa seemed to already know that we would travel together."
Her face seemed to turn slightly redder with my last comment and she gave a small giggle. Bach seemed as caught by it as me. So similar already. A smile must have show on my face and Vic seemed to brim with happiness.
"My parents reacted similarly. At first both were like no you will not travel with a boy and I thought they would forbid me to journey with you. Then I told them it would be you and mysteriously calmed down. Like no more questions asked. My mom seemed weirdly happy. Weird isn't it?"
Nope. I met her parents and over the years they seemed to think of me as the only worthy male in her daughter's life. Completely ignoring the fact that I am the only one. Her mom seemed to think since we stayed friends from childhood and stayed friends even when we turned 12 and beyond, we would definitely become an item. She always threw some not-so-subtle hints and always seemed disappointed when I am over, and nothing has changed.
I can vividly imagine her face when Vic told them we would travel together. A shudder run through me. Troublesome woman. Not that I wouldn't like to become one, but I am just uncertain. I don't want to risk the wonderful friendship but maybe I do think to much about it. No risks no rewards.
I definitely know from where Vic got her pushiness and lack of subtlety from. Her mother already seemed to scheme with my grandparents. Troublesome. The bus reached Floaroma and we left at the stop for the mall. Bach was with me sitting on my shoulders humming a slow and steady melody and Vic's Bidoof now named Rusty due to its small rust coloured tint was walking next to her.
As soon as we entered Hurricane Victoria emerged and the shopping spree begun. The first shops we visited were medicine shops. I bought 12 Potions, 5 Paralyse – Heals and a small variety of herbs but I guess Vic's dad will supply us with some from his stock when we head off on Monday.
Next where some shops for Pokémon food and I had quite a good discussion with one clerk a previous Bug - Catcher about the dietary and care requirements of the Kricketot line. He additionally sold me the newest edition of "Fantastic Bugs and Where to find them" trying to convert me to a Bug – Catcher for half price. Neat.
Vic left me alone to buy in her words "Girl supplies for long journeys" and I gladly left her alone with that. I took a small stroll through the mall and decided to have a nap near a spring well while Bach played in the water.
I was woken up rather roughly by a small punch to my shoulder. I opened my eyes and Victoria stood before me. Arms crossed and giving me a deadpan stare. Bach was still happily buzzing near the well.
"I can not leave you along for a small moment. Without you trying to get some naps in. Dale why are you so difficult?"
Difficult? I would describe myself as rather easy going. Maybe it is a Victoria thing. I looked at my watch and snorted. A moment my backside. 45 minutes. A good nap time. Picking up Bach we headed to the clothing stores for Trainer's.
Looking around the male section I found some shorts, jeans and hiking trousers my size and picked them up. I added 8 pairs of socks. 4 thick and 4 regulars. A couple of button up shirts and a warm looking jacket were added to my pile. With my clothes I walked around trying to find Vic. I found her holding two pair of shorts and seemingly comparing them molecule by molecule.
"Hey Dale, which one do you think would suit me." She held them out towards me. One was a rather short pair of shorts which couldn't cover more than her upper thighs, while the other one was longer but more baggy reaching towards her knees. Hmmm.
"I think both might work for you. But we are travelling northwards do you really think they are suitable for the weather?"
"Silly Dale I already picked my winter clothes; those are for the journey to Eterna city and clothes I can wear in the Pokémon Center. So, which one?"
If I am honest to myself, I really like her more in dresses. As a friend I should go for the longer variant but what if become more? Is this a test of some sorts? This is mental.
"I think the shorter one is nice, but you might want to consider wearing leggings or whatever it is called below. Else you might get cold." A diplomatic approach. Answer with a counteroffer.
She seemed to mull it over and hung the longer pair of shorts back to their place getting 3 more of the shorts. That seems to have done the trick.
"Thank you Dale I thought so as well. You are kinda helpful didn't expect that from you. Ohhhhhhh. That is a nice jacket you picked there. The colours suit you well. Now let's pay up and look at some camping supplies."
I gave a nod and Bach chirped approvingly. Good that you have my back.
We went and paid a rather hefty sum for our clothes and then headed through the mall to a camping supply store.
"Oh yeah by the way. Mum invited you to dinner today she also stated she might give us tents. Isnt that great?" Vic piped up while we browse through the different types of camping cookers. My suspicions were cranked up to an 11. Giving us a tent? Why do I feel this sense of dread? Dinner sounds nice though, but I am not certain what ploys will come my way.
"Yop sounds good, do you think they mind me taking Bach with me?" My partner was happily bopping his head up and down.
"Don't think so they will love this cute little guy." She went to scratch Bach between his antennae and he made a low happy buzzing sound.
We decided on getting a medium sized cooker and enough fuel to get us to Eterna city. We split the cost halfway. Checking the clock we had around 30 more minutes before the bus back to the village would arrive.
Vic decided on getting ice cream and sitting in front of the mall waiting for the bus. I got a scoop of mint and a small scoop of ice cream made for Pokémon for Bach. Never though that existed. Vic got a oran berry flavoured one and Rusty had the same as Bach.
We sat at a bench before the mall eating in amiable silence. Only disturbed by the slurping noised of Rusty and high frequency chirps coming from Bach. Then Victoria spoke up.
"I still can not believe in two days we are leaving." She took a deep breath. "To be honest Dale I didn't think you would actually leave but you told me about your plans and they sound pretty good. I just have one question. What do you want to get from this journey?"
A small breeze flew through the main street making flower beds dance to its rhythm. The scent of blooming flowers was all around us.
"I am still not certain. I think winning a few badges and participating in a contest might be pretty sweet. My goal is mainly to travel and explore every nook and cranny of Sinnoh after that I might go to another region. Personally, I think many give this journey to much attention. It will be our time to explore and learn on our own, experience new things and meet new people. Forcing such experiences will not help us later on. I just want to explore our homeland with my best friends."
She gave me a long look and her smile returned full force.
"That sounds pretty good. I am glad you allowed me to join you. I feel it will be quite the adventure."
The bus arrived and I took out my Poketech and texted grandma that I will have dinner at Vic's house with her parents.
The ride was quiet both Bach and Rusty seemed tried. I led my head slump against the window and watched the passing wilderness appearing sleepy. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Vic scooting a bit closer to me and giving me some quick glances. Then she let her head "fall" onto my shoulder. Kricketot buzzed in happiness and I made no move to show that I uncomfortable. Her smile became brighter as she leaned her head against my shoulder and her cheeks seemed to become redder.
Maybe I should aske her sooner than later. She seems to know what she wants. If she believes that much in it why shouldn't I. How about in Eterna forest. Maybe near a lake hoping for some display of the local bugs? Sounds good. During the rest of the ride, I was in a half-awake state thinking about the possibility of Vic and me being an item. Seems like a nice thing. I enjoyed her closeness. Sensing her rhythmic breathing I wished this moment could last forever.
Reaching the village and her stop I noticed that she fell asleep and gave her a soft shake. She woke up very dreamy looking. Her expression changed to full on embarrassment when she realised that her head is still leaning on my shoulder. I gave a chuckle and picked up most of our shopping heading outside.
Vic joined a few moments later. Looking more composed. We walked towards her house, a similar wooden building as the house of my grandparents. Vic went in first calling out.
"Mom. Dad. Dale and I are back from Floaroma."
"We are in the dining room, sweetie." Called out he voice of Victoria's mum. Vic showed me where I can put down my and her shopping. We headed into the dining room Rusty and Bach hot on our heels. The rooms was rustic and old fashioned but beautiful in its own way. A large table made from mahogany was filled with many pots and pans. On one side of the table sat Vic parents leaving the other two chairs next to each other for us. Sneaky.
"Evening Dale. I hope you enjoyed the shopping trip and got most of your supplies. It is a long track from here to Eterna. I also hope Vicky was good company she was quite excited this morning." Her mother said. Vic gave a huff and sat down and her father shot me smile.
"I see you have chosen a Kricketot as a starter. A rather unique choice wouldn't you agree? How comes you went for this cute little guy Dale?"
"Originally it was a spur of the moment decision. I had a vague idea of forming my team from Pokémon linked to making music and grandpa added that I might include ones that like to dance. Then I saw Bach during the selection and puff. Partners on first sight." Bach exploded in a buzz and hoped excitedly up and down humming his tune. Telling the story from his perspective.
Vic's dad always seemed to understand what Pokémon say.
"Sounds like a fascinating story. Bach? Named him after an ancient composer? Seems like you made a good choice. Reminds me when I started my journey back in Sunnyshore."
Sunnyshore. The birthplace of my dad. Vic's father has travelled with him for some years before they separated, and he vanished. One day I will find out more about him.
Dinner was a nice affair. Victoria's mum mainly asked about the the shopping trip giving me grin when it was mentioned that I helped picking out some of her clothes. Her dad discussed with me in detail about the route we are planning to take.
He was quite curious about my thought process behind it and seemed to like mu unusual approach. Additionally, he gave some ideas for partners and some tricks in how to deal with Pokémon specialising on sound. He didn't tell me to much stating that personal experience will beat any advice he could give me.
After dinner Vic dragged me upstairs into her room wanting to talk a bit more about our plans. Her room was very similar to mine furniture wise. She was as messy as me clothes laid around the floor and I made an effort to ignore the various bras lying around.
Vic kicked some clothes into a corner and let herself fall onto her bed. I took her desk chair and observed the photos plastering her wall. Many are of herself and her parents. Some though were of us. They seemed to be all in their separate corner from the other pictures.
One caught my attention. It was our first day in school. My untameable spik blue hair stood out next to Vic's smooth brown ponytail both of us seem to laugh into the camera. I spun around on the chair looking at Victoria. She was laying on her bed glancing towards the ceiling with a big smile on her face.
Using my feet, I pushed myself forwards rolling closer to the bed and made a exaggerated jump onto the bed. She gave a small squeak as I landed but started to laugh afterwards. Both of us laughed for several minutes.
Her eyes got that dreamy glaze again.
"You ready for all of this?" I spoke up, rolling on my back and looking at the ceiling.
"I think so. It is very exciting. … Dale I have heard from some people at school that Sara and Mike will also travel together apparently they are dating. What are your thoughts?"
Nervous about the possibility? Her tone suggests that she is scared of a possible rejection. What to say? I think I like her more than a friend. Possibly since we were 14. Her glances towards me and her beaming simile have increased since last year. Is she testing the waters? I should probably say something to calm her down.
"Hmmm I think it would depend on the couple, don't you? The journey will be at least two years on average which is a long time to be together just by themselves. Many things could go wrong" I glanced at her some tears were forming in her eyes. "But I think if you believe enough in it and both give their best it has a high chance to succeed. Dating wise I cannot answer, no experience there."
I gave her smile and a chuckle. She seemed to calm down a bit, but her posture still showed some anxiety. Should I let the Mewoth out of the bag? Maybe a reassurance.
Slowly I moved my left hand towards her right. When my fingers toucher her palm. Her head immediately turned to me. I continued looking at the ceiling. Our fingers intertwined and I could feel her relax. I stared to slowly rub my thumb over her knuckles. I heard some sobs from her and hold her hand thighter. We stayed like this for some time. Slowly she seemed to calm down. Her smile was different. Almost as if she is relieved by my action.
Looking at my watch I realized the time. Half past ten. Quite late. I started to slowly release my hold of her hand and sat up.
Vic game me long look and surged forward pulling me into a deep hug. Our heads were next to each other and she started to cry into my shoulder. Seeing her so vulnerable didn't feel right for me. After a moment I used my arms to pull her closer letting them rest on her back and giving her gentle strokes.
Her face lifted from shoulder and I looked into her now red eyes. She spoke with a slight hiccup in her voice.
"What are your thoughts …. About … about us?"
I should give her a good indicator that I am more than fine with it and also give her a mystery to look forward to.
"It would have always been us. Just wait till Eterna Forest. But what are your thoughts?" I held her close again as even I started to get emotional. We stayed like this for a couple more moments neither of us wanting to let go.
"I have to go Vic. Take a bit of time to think. I will wait for you on Monday. Looking forward to your answer." I let go of her and headed downstairs. I picked up my shopping and a sleeping Bach and wished a good evening towards Vic's parents. Loud steps coming from the stairwell stopped me in my track and a pair of arms flung themselves around me. A voice whispered into my ear.
"Good night Dale. See you on Monday." The the arms let go and Victoria run back upstairs. When I turned around, I saw her mother giving me a smile of success and a knowing look, she mouthed in a hushed voice.
"Took you long enough."
Her father gave me a nod and a smile, and I headed outside into the cool night.
Sunday passed away pretty fast. Most of the day I spent packing and stuffing my stuff in a Silph&Co Backpack which uses a similar method to a Poke Ball to fit more into it. Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, 4 cantina bottles of water, enough clothes so that I could change everyday for two weeks. A map, compass, magnifying glass, cutlery and plates, some stationary including a small notebook which I will use to record results of training. Rations, Pokefood and snacks. A solar charger for the camera and Poketech and finally my camera. All in all, the backpack didn't weight more than 8 kilograms. Not sure how the do it.
The other part of the day was spent lazing with Bach near an old oak tree thinking about our upcoming journey. I told him what happened between Vic and me yesterday and buzzed in excitement. Best wingman I could ask for. I came to the decision that I will ask her officially to be my girlfriend at a small lake in the middle of Eterna Forest. Based on my research a swarm of Dustox and Masquerain lives there and perform nightly dances over the lake. Think it would be a nice spot.
Vic send me some messages over the day telling me of her progress packing up. She seemed even more energetic than normal. Bach was also very excited I showed him some videos of Jigglypuff's, and he seemed to look forward having one with us.
During the last couple of days, he came more out of his shell and showed a quite boisterous attitude. He enjoyed listening to some of my music and even tried copying it with his antennae. It is a work in progress.
My grandparents are incredibly happy for me. In their opinion it is important for a young man to find his own way in the world. They and the money left from my parents are enough to support me for at least 4 years. Even when I would be wasteful with spending.
Apparently, my parents made quite a lot of money before both vanished.
Monday arrived. To surprise Vic and to allow me to rub it in for years to come I woke up far earlier than normal. M grandparents were away maybe tending the Miltank and Tauros. Lifting Bach onto m shaoulder and fastening the backpack to my back. I walked out towards her house.
I sat down on a log in the garden and waited.
"I will be right back. Have to wake up the sleepy head." Echoed the voice of Victoria. The door opened and she came out.
Shoe wore the shorts with leggings as I have recommended showing of her thighs quite well.
… Stop staring.
She wore an unzipped jacket showing a green blouse with flowers. The leggings vanished into ankle high hiking boots coloured in a dark green. A weird combo but who am I to judge. Her hair was kept in her usual ponytail. Cute though.
She walked straight past me. I smiled and spoke with a teasing voice.
"My, my already leaving without me." She spun around and her mouth hung wide open.
"YOU ARE AWAKE?" Vic screeched.
"Yop." I answered popping the p.
"I thought you like your sleep. Couldn't wait to see me hmmmm?" Yes. But I will not tell you. Bach bopped his head up and down.
"Good morning to you as well Bach."
"You ready Vic?"
She gave me a snort.
"I was born ready Dale."
My grandparent moved up the street and her parents walked out of the house. Rusty slowly made his way out of the house as well. He seems kinda sleepy.
I could see two small boxes in the hands of my grandparents. They gave one to Victoria and another one to me. Opening the box I couldn't believe my eyes.
A Pokedex. I grabbed both of them in a hug.
Amazing. Victoria did the same and then hugged her parents. We slowly made our way to the path leading onto Route 205. At the sign we wished our goodbyes. Tears were flowing and Bach played a uplifting melody.
Then we begun walking. Our journey has begun.
Following the path, we got taken into a small woodland which would later join up with the mountainous path of the 205. Bach and Rusty run around and inspected everything they could find. I spotted some Wurmple in the trees observing us and I gave them a wave.
We followed the path for a couple of hours when we deceide to stop for a brake. We found some tree trunks on the side of the path and after checking them for any Weedles we sat down. Bach and Rusty vanished into the bush and Vic and I were left alone.
She sat close to me. Closer than usual. She spoke up in a soft voice.
"I gave it some thought. You didn't seem to give me a direct answer, but your action said differently." Her hands reached out for mine and our fingers interlocked again. I like this feeling. I stared to rub her knuckles and back of her hand with my thumb. We were content to just stay like this for a moment.
She scooted closer to me and spoke again. Letting her head rest on my shoulder.
"You are clearly planning something. I am still uncertain what though. Any hints?" Her voice was timid and there was still some lingering anxiety, I guess. Glancing at her I saw uncertainty in her posture. Slowly I moved my face closer to hers and gave her a quick peck on her cheek.
Bold move man. My brain seemed to short circuit not believing I really did that. I heard some buzzing of Bach in the distance and an encouraging sound from Rusty. She seemed to freeze for a moment. Face reddening. Her arms flung themselves around me and she hid put her head against my chest.
"I take that at as yes. Don't make me wait to long." She still held me tight. I really start to enjoy that feeling. Staying like this for a few more moments before we separated, and our Pokémon appeared back from the undergrowth.
Continuing along the meandering path Vic and I talked about out next team members. She found my idea of adding a Jigglypuff to my team incredibly cute and couldn't wait. Vic wanted to add a Buneary and if she is lucky a wandering Zengoose to her team.
I told her travelling along Route 205 would take at least a week, but we can spend more time looking for her and mine next team members. She said she wouldn't want to impose to much. I mentioned how rare Jigglypuffs were and she felt better afterwards she didn't seem to want me to wait to long for her to find her teammate.
I told her I would scurry around Route 205 with her for months if we don't find it. Nothing pushes as us. The next conference is in a year and a half enough time for her to get eight badges if she trains hard.
At sunset we saw the sign indicating the transition form the path onto Route 205.
"We should make camp around here and tomorrow we can stand in earnest. Looking fur Jigglypuff and a Buneary will be like finding the needle in haystack."
"Sounds good. You want to start cooking and I build up the tents?" Asked Vic.
"Sure."
I started to unpack the cooker and got ready to chop some ingredients. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Victoria reddening furiously as she read a note and took out a collapsible tent. TENT. As in singular. Troublesome mother. I got out my camera and took a few shots of Vic trying to set the note aflame with her gaze alone.
She turned around and words just tumbled out of her mouth.
"I am so sorry Dale but it seems like my parents made a mistake and gave us a single tent which can fit around 3-4 people." A mistake hmmmm. Her face was crimson. I stood and walked over to her. Putting my hand on her shoulder.
"We will find a way. You can go in first for changing clothes and such and I will be second. Sleep wise I think we can find a way so that all of us are comfortable." I gave her a soft squeeze. Being vague and including our Pokémon into the sleeping arrangement seemed to calm her but there seemed to be still some … fear?
"Vic. Are you afraid of something?" I changed the location of my arm and grabbed her in a hug.
"I … I … I am just uncertain. I still can not believe it really. I don't want to scare you away. Not after finally receiving an answer." Tears started flowing. I sighed. Thank you, Momma Storm. I sat down and motioned for her to sit next to me. Glancing at me for a moment she laid down before me and put her head in my lap.
I started to slowly stroke through her hair. While she started to calm down. Rusty and Bach joined her at her sides and nuzzled themselves into a hug. The tears became fewer and the sobs started to recede.
"Tori … " A nickname I use very rarely if at all. "What makes you think you can scare me away if I have known you for around 14 years of life by just sleeping in the same tent."
I continued stroking through her hair. So soft. A small sobby giggle escaped her.
"Pretty pathetic isn't it?"
"I don't think so." I stopped and looked into her eyes.
"I think it shows that you care. A pretty sweet gesture. You have nothing to be afraid of. If 14 years of Hurricane Victoria haven't scared me away the following years wont either. Trust me."
Rusty and Bach voiced out their opinions on the matter and Vic started to giggle again. A sweet and soft sound. She dusted herself of and stood up.
"Thank you Dale. I mean it. I … Thank you."
She headed back towards the tent and it started to assemble itself. It was definitely large enough for 4 people spacious enough to giver her space during the night. I think that might be the most important point. Letting her initiate contact.
If she is afraid, I can calm her down but I shouldn't appear pushy or else she might become more anxious. I continued staring at her as she wandered around the tent and observed it.
She is so beautiful. Well we found our first obstacle to work against. I focused back on the cooking and 30 minutes later Vic and I ate soup while Bach nibbled at some jerky and Rusty ate regular Pokefood.
I cleaned up storing the equipment back in their correct spaces while Vic headed into the tent laying down her sleeping bag and mat. I joined her a couple of minutes later, but she hasn't placed her stuff down. She looked space out.
I plopped my stuff down on one end expecting her to do the same. When she spoke up.
"Dale … would you mind if I put my stuff next to yours? Bach and rusty can sleep on the other side if they want." There is the bold girl I like. Her anxiety seemed to be mostly gone.
"I don't mind but I warn you I move in my sleep." I gave her a grin and Bach fumbled through my clothes dragging a trouser, two shirts and a boxer short to the other side of the tent building his nest.
Vic started laughing.
"I will head outside, and you can go change alright?" Receiving a nod, I crawled to the exit and was embraced by a cool breeze. I closed the flap behind me and started to think.
I hope she isn't uncomfortable with that. I see that she really likes me and I do really like her. That stunt though could have set us back quiet a lot. How to go further from here and my plans for training Kricketot.
I will still let her be the main initiator except for smaller things and when she grows comfortable with the new situation things can change. When did she start feeling like this? I know it increased since last year, but it was there beforehand. Was it wrong of letting her stew on it for so long?
Is that the cause of her anxiety? After years of maybes finally receiving a yes and now being scared of losing the new status quo.
It always surprises me how detached I can think about such things. Grandma told me that I got that from my dad. Grandpa always grimaced at that. I heard the sound of the flap being unzipped and Victoria stepped out in oversized shirt and baggy jogging trousers. Her hair was not in her usual ponytail and is now reaching a couple of centimetres past her shoulders.
She stood next to me and followed my gaze into the dark thicket of the trees.
"Anything interesting?"
"No just thinking."
"About … About us?"
"Yes. Thinking about how lucky I am to have met you. Thinking about where we go from here trainings wise and emotionally. I share some of our fears you know?" She gave me a questioning glance and came closer to me.
"I think I started to realise since when you must have felt that way. There is an uncertainty in me that I cannot live up to what you …" She placed her hand around my mouth.
"Shhhhhh. You could never disappoint me. You are calm, collected, even a little bit lazy. I knew when we started middle school what I wanted. … It is getting late let's head sleep we have many things to do."
She wandered back towards the tent. My gaze following her. She opened the tent entrance and motioned for me to come as well. I followed. Hopping into my sleeping bag I wiggled out of my trousers to the great amusement of all. I was probably creating my best Wurmple impression. Storing the trousers next to me I got ready to sleep. Turning onto my side I faced Vic doing the same.
I gave her a smile and closed my eyes.
