A/N: Here is the second chapter of this story! We find out in this chapter why Booth was unhappy to see Brennan. I just want to point out that I think I said in the author's notes for the first chapter that this story is set in Season 10 and it isn't, it's season 9. My bad! Apologies for any confusion. Thank you for all your lovely reviews, I hope you like this chapter just as much.

Disclaimer: I don't own Bones.

Time. Everyone is telling her she has got to give it time. But how much time? How much longer was she going to have to endure this agony? She had thought when Booth woke up that it would be the end of the pain, that he would be ok, and the healing could begin. But she had been wrong. His first words to her had shattered her heart and her world. He didn't want her anywhere near him and she couldn't understand why.

Her first thought was that it was her fault for not talking to him while he was unconscious. Because why wouldn't it be her fault? She causes everyone she loves in her life to leave her. But when she had asked the doctor about it, he had reassured her that it didn't really make much difference either way and certainly hadn't caused Booth's amnesia. The doctor had looked at her strangely when she had asked the question and she had felt a little embarrassed. It was clearly unusual for loved ones not to talk to coma patients. It made her feel as if she were adrift at sea, misunderstanding a societal norm as usual. She hadn't realised how much she had relied on Booth to be her anchor, holding her in place, helping her understand when she was doing something that wasn't normal.

After Booth's initial dismissal of her, she knew she had to persevere, so she had stuck by his bedside despite his request for her to leave. She had patiently explained that she was his wife, and they have a daughter together and that she would not be leaving any time soon. He had looked at her in disbelief but had not said anything further. He had been taken away for more scans and tests at that point and she had no further interaction with him as when he had been brought back, he was asleep. She'd panicked when she saw him, but the nurse reassured him he was fine, and it was normal- his brain still needed rest to repair.

Early the next morning, Cam arrived at the hospital accompanied by her neurologist friend Dr Hassan whom she had consulted with when Booth had first been admitted to the hospital. Booth had woken up just before their arrival and when Cam walked into the room his eyes had lit up and a smile spread across his face.

"Camille!" He said happily

Cam looked shocked. Dr Brennan had told her about his amnesia, and she hadn't expected him to know her.

"How are you Seeley?" She said with a small smile though the concern was evident in her eyes.

"Don't call me Seeley." He retorted with a grin.

Her response was automatic and before she could think about it, she said "Don't call me Camille!"

It was their little joke they had together, and it was encouraging that he remembered it, but it was too much for Brennan. He remembered Cam, but not her, his wife? She swallowed a sob and dashed from the room bursting into tears when she was through the door. Cam had smiled awkwardly at Booth and followed her from the room.

"Dr Brennan, I'm sorry I had no idea he would react to me in that way. You said he had amnesia."

Brennan shook her head and wiped at her eyes with her fingers. Cam handed her a Kleenex from her purse which Brennan took with a grateful smile.

"It's not your fault Cam. The doctor who assessed him when he first woke up says he's lost approximately the last ten years so it shouldn't have been such a surprise that he remembers you, you've known him much longer than that."

They both looked at the door to Booth's room when Dr Hassan emerged from it. Cam hadn't realised he hadn't followed her out when she went after Dr Brennan.

"I'm sorry, Dr Brennan. I haven't introduced you; this is my friend Dr Amir Hassan. Amir, this is my colleague Dr Temperance Brennan, Seeley's wife."

"Dr Brennan, it's a pleasure to meet you. I only wish it were under different circumstances, Camille has told me a lot about you." Dr Hassan smiled kindly at Brennan and she had to swallow to hold back more tears.

"Yes. What can you tell me about my husband's condition, Dr Hassan?" Her response was blunt and she knew she ought to make more of an effort with the doctor trying to help Booth but small talk and niceties were difficult for Brennan in normal circumstances and in this stressful situation, she was almost incapable of using them.

Dr Hassan glanced at Cam before returning his gaze to Brennan. She noticed that his suit was a finely tailored item and it was only then that she noticed how well groomed and handsome he was and she briefly wondered, if a little unkindly, if he was another of Cam's ex boyfriends.

"Your husband's latest scans are encouraging. The edema has gone, and the contusion has shrunk considerably and appears to be healing well. His brain function appears to be normal…"

He glanced at Cam again before Brennan prompted him "But?"

Cam nodded in encouragement and he continued. "His amnesia is concerning. The area of the brain with the contusion is responsible for memory and personality. Damage in this area can not only cause amnesia but possible personality changes also."

"What sort of changes?"

"Mood swings, he may like or dislike things that he didn't before, and he may have a shorter temper. Those are just a few possibilities in a very long list because everyone is different."

"But that will be temporary, like the amnesia, right?" Brennan couldn't believe what she was hearing. So not only could Booth not even remember her, he would be different too?

"No two people are the same, Dr Brennan. Yes, for the majority of people it is temporary, but others can suffer long term effects. It is hard to say at this stage which category Seeley will fall into. A lot of amnesia can be remedied with psychological therapy. Cam suggested I consult with your friend Dr Sweets and he has agreed to help Seeley with this side of his recovery."

Brennan nodded her understanding and thanked Dr Hassan before turning to go back into Booth's room. She never had any doubt that Sweets would want to help Booth. Even though she and Booth have had their issues with Sweets in the past, their relationship with him has grown to being more than a professional one and they now regarded him as a close friend. She couldn't think of anyone else she would rather help Booth than Sweets.

She stopped when she walked into Booth's room. He was laid in bed with his eyes closed. She knew he wasn't asleep, and he looked sad. Her emotions had been getting the better of her and she knew it couldn't continue. She had learnt enough about love in the past few years to know that when you love someone, you put them before yourself. She almost felt her long discarded walls snap into place as she returned her brain to one of rationality and logical thought. One not being led by emotion. She was going to put her own emotions to one side and do everything she could to help Booth.

Seeley Booth was confused as hell. Since he had woken up nothing made any sense. So much so that he wasn't even sure of his own name anymore. Who was he? He didn't really know. Was he still in the army or is it the FBI now? The FBI, definitely the FBI. That was how he met Temperance Brennan who had been sat by his bed since he woke up. Like everything else that was happening right now, he didn't have a clue why she was here. The last memory he had of her was her telling him he was stupid and that she hated him. That memory hurt more than it should. She had told him she would never work with him again but somehow, she must have done because why else would she be here? His head hurt and thinking was making it worse. He laid his head back and closed his eyes.

She said when he woke up that she is his wife, and they have a child. He had no idea why he had married this woman. She hates him and he is infuriated by her. Sure, he was attracted to her and when they first met, he had felt something for her and hoped that maybe they could have started dating. But all of that had disappeared when she slapped him in the face. It had made him so angry that he'd had no desire to see or work with her ever again.

He must have knocked her up, that could be the only explanation for why they are married. That didn't feel right to him though. She had looked upset before she left the room. Cam had come to see him, and it had made him so happy. He recognised her, he had memories of her that made sense. Seeing her made him feel like himself again even if it was just for a moment. Why would Brennan be upset about that? He could feel himself getting frustrated until he considered that he couldn't figure her out before in that short time they had known each other so why would now be any different?

The doc who came to see him just now hadn't told him anything different to what the other doctors who had been to see him had said. He had amnesia, it might all come back, it might not. He said a psychologist called Sweets was going to come to see him. What kind of stupid ass name was Sweets? And yet hearing it prompted a feeling in his head. It had been happening since he woke up. It was a feeling like when you walk into a room and you forget what you've gone in there for. It's teasing you in the back of your mind until you walk away, and then you remember. Only he wasn't remembering. What he was remembering were strange things though. Words kept popping into his head, and he didn't have a clue what they meant. Words like, phalanges, mandible, kerf marks. Like what the hell were they? And the name Christine wouldn't leave him alone. Who is she and what does she mean to him? He could feel sadness blooming in his chest. Would he ever know? Will he ever get everything back? How is he supposed to know who he is if he can't remember anything?

He heard the door open and quiet footsteps stopping just short of his bed. He opened his eyes to see her standing there again. She looked just how he remembered her, same wavy auburn hair and stunning crystal blue eyes. She was a little older maybe, but she was still breathtakingly beautiful. Even if every word out of her mouth seemed to piss him off.

"Hi" he said when she neither came any closer to him nor spoke to him.

"Hi" she replied and moved to sit back in the chair that she had seemed to be ever present in. For the first time, he noticed the blue brace on her arm and wondered what had happened to her. He also noticed her eyes were red like she had been crying. They were guarded though as if there was something she wasn't letting him see.

"Can I ask you something?" He'd figured that if she is his wife, then she is most likely to know the answers to most of his questions. Unless they aren't that close and then he had no idea who he should ask.

"Of course." She said and her eyes softened a little.

"What are phalanges, mandibles, and kerf marks? And who is Christine?"

Brennan's heart skipped a beat. He remembered something! She reached for his hand "Phalanges are these" she said as she stroked each one of his fingers while laying his hand flat on top of hers. She released his hand and reached up to his face "a mandible is this" she said as she stroked his jaw.

The things he had been remembering were bone stuff? Exactly how much time had he been spending around the bone lady? He remembered he had nicknamed her 'Bones' when they had worked together but she didn't like it. She dropped her hand from his face and Booth involuntarily reached for it to grasp it in his. Her touch was doing something to him. It was familiar yet unfamiliar. His heart rate had increased along with his breathing rate.

Brennan smiled when Booth took her hand, it was comforting. She continued her explanations for him "Kerf marks are marks on bone left behind by a bladed instrument and Christine is our daughter." She reached over to the table at the side of the bed. She picked up the picture she had brought in of her and Christine and handed it to Booth.

Booth glanced at her and she noticed he had tears in his eyes "She looks like you." He said while running his finger across Christine's face in the picture. "What about Parker?" He said suddenly. "Where's Parker?"

Brennan reached to the table again and handed him another picture. Booth's breath caught when he saw the picture. This is his little boy? He has grown so much. The tears that were threatening rolled down his face as he realised he had forgotten almost all of his son's childhood. "Can I see him?"

Brennan swallowed back her own tears, reminding herself of her vow to put her own emotions to one side. She shook her head "Rebecca took Parker to live with her in London, England. The last time you saw him was at our wedding a few months ago. He video calls you every weekend though."

Booth put the pictures down as more tears rolled down his face. He felt like he was grieving. His son who he remembers as a little pre-school age boy is now nearly a teenager and lives in another country, and he has a small daughter that he doesn't even remember. He grabbed Brennan's hand again and held on tight. Nothing made any sense, but she is here, and her touch is somehow giving him the comfort he so desperately needs right now. He laid his head back on the pillows and eventually fell asleep still holding onto his lifeline.

A/N: No Cliff hanger this time! So Booth remembers a little but they still have a bumpy road ahead with plenty of angst to come. Please review and let me know what you think!
