Series 2, Episode 19 ~ House of Crushes
Camilla glanced at the scene quickly, the roof was coming down and coming down quickly. "Guys I suggest you run," she told her friends before she took a deep breath "MOTUS!" she screamed her hands shaking as she felt the strain of the roof pushing against the wind she was controlling to try to keep it up for her friends. Camilla could feel the blood as it poured from both nostrils but she didn't care as she watched Nina, Amber and Fabian crouch and run under the roof, all of them hearing the creeks as it fought against Camilla's magic and its want to go down, as well as the grunts as Camilla, fought against it.
"Camilla come on!" Fabian shouted the moment they were all free. Camilla let the spell go and the moment she did she collapsed to her knees as dizziness overcame her, but she knew she couldn't stop. Crawling as fast as she could under the wall, though it wasn't fast enough from the screams Amber let out in fear.
Camilla closed her eyes her energy depleting. It was hard to even think about moving let along actually do it.
The three on the other side of the space all looked at one another in fear, she was deathly pale causing the blood coming from her nose to look eerily crimson.
"CAMILLA!" Amber sounded petrified as she saw the girl's movements slow down. She was going to be crushed. She had used up her energy trying to keep the roof from crushing them just to be crushed herself.
Before Camilla could do more than lift her head, she felt two hands wrap around her wrist and with a grunt Fabian pulled his sister out from under the wall just mere seconds before it would have crushed her.
The twins collapsed to the ground in a heap. Camilla's knees giving way as All her energy was sapped from her. Fabian clinging to his sister as if making sure she was really alive.
"You are so stupid." He spoke into her hair, his voice thick, his eyes watery.
"I had to... make sure you guys got through," Camilla mumbled her eyes shut, feeling someone wipe away the blood from her face, "plus I knew... you're my big brother, you'd save me..." she told him looking up at him weakly causing a watery chuckle to leave his mouth but he refused to let go of his sister.
"Being brother and sister means being there for each other, even when one of you is being an idiot," Fabian mumbled to her causing a small weak chuckle to bubble from her lips.
"Look..." Nina panted as the roof rose again, pointing to the symbols on the floor they had all thought where decoration earlier. The ones Camilla had named the gods for. "there is some sort of pattern."
"cross the grid with step or hop. Follow the sequence; do not stop. All must complete the hopscotch test before the ceilings stay's at rest." A recording of Robert's voice was heard.
"Well, least Robert was nice enough to give us a verbal clue this time," Camilla mumbled from Fabian's arms.
The boy looked up from where he and his sister where sat leaning against the wall, looking at the other two girls, "I can't hopscotch to save my life..."
"Well Fabian... you just might have too," Nina sympathetically told him, watching how Camilla's grip tightened on her brother at her words.
Camilla couldn't lose her brother, just like how Fabian couldn't lose his sister. The twins to one another, so much being said silently between them that Nina couldn't interpret.
"I was the school hopscotch champion two years running," Amber told them all confidently, flicking her hair behind her shoulder as she turned to the tunnel. With almost sheer perfect precision Amber started hopscotching, though within seconds of her feet touching the tiles the creaking sound was heard and the roof started to slowly start it decent down.
"AMBER!" The three called out. Camilla trying to get out of her brothers' arms to help the girl but in her weakened state his grip was too strong. Thankfully Nina rushed forward and pulled the girl back. The moment they were on the edge of the tiles the roof started to ascend back into the ceiling.
Amber clutched onto Nina who was more than happy to clutch back onto her, "but I did it right, you saw me!" Amber told them all as they all watching the ceiling rise up.
"It was pretty much textbook," Nina muttered confused.
"It's obvious that Ancient Egyptians didn't know a thing about hopscotch." Amber sassed.
"These aren't numbers anyway," Nina said pointing to the markings on the floor, "look they're like animals. Is that a duck?"
"it's actually a goose, it's a symbol of Geb, the God of the Earth." Camilla groaned as Fabian helped her to her feet, her arm going around his shoulder as she leant on him.
Nina glanced at the pair, knowing that anymore exploring was now done for the night with Camilla being in the weak state she was in. "Ambs take a picture." She told the girl who instantly got her phone out and did just that.
"Let's call it a day," Fabian said to them as he and Camilla slowly made their way across the room, "Camilla needs to regain her energy back..." Amber nodded as her eyes looking at Camilla with worry.
"Evan if we do learn the sequence to this," Nina groaned looking at the tiles, "what about the chasm? How do we get over that?"
"Well we all know what Pink Power ranger would do, she'd long jump it, or pole vault it, or would she javelin it?" Amber added causing a chuckle from the twins.
"Amber your just listing sports," Fabian told her with a smile.
Camilla grabbed the girl's arm and weakly said, "We deal with one thing at a time. I'm sure there are clues around the chasm telling us how to cross it."
"How many more traps are there going to be between us and the mask?" Nina asked franticly, causing eye rolls from the twins. The last thing they needed was someone losing their shit around dangerous traps. "ten? A hundred?!"
"A thousand! A hundred thousand!" Amber added on quickly, panicking slightly.
"Amber, your now just listing numbers!" Camilla told her, though her voice was weak and croaky they all heard her causing them to fall silent.
"Sorry, I list things when I get anxious," Amber mumbled. Fabian and Camilla took the silence to mean they were leaving and slowly the two lead the way out.
None of the Sibuna's where surprised Camilla crashed in Fabian's room that night, nor where they surprised when Fabian was extra overprotective the next day. His sister had almost drained herself using magic and gotten herself crushed because of it. Thankfully Camilla's energy had been restored with her sleep, and other than looking a little on the paler side she seemed as good as new, though for once she wasn't complaining about Fabian hovering around her. She was more than happy to have a twin day; she wasn't the only one who had the horrible realisation of what life without the other twin would be like and it was something only Fabian could understand.
After breakfast, Camilla pulled Fabian to one side, "I have something to show you," she whispered as Alfie and Jerome wandered past laughing, "you have first period free right?" Fabian nodded causing her to smile, "perfect, grab your stuff and we'll go now."
Of course, Fabian had a million questions as to what Camilla had to show him, which only increased tenfold when she proceeded to walk him across the grounds and into the woods. Camilla paused as she got to her favourite place in the school the lab, her bright smile was contrasted by Fabian's very confused look as all he saw was a greenhouse about to fall down at any minute.
Camilla turned and saw Fabian's expression, causing a smile to appear on her face. "Trust me, okay, I know you want to know more about my magic classes, well that's what I'm doing," she told him holding a hand out to him.
Fabian glanced at his sister and let out a breathtaking her hand. He was curious about her magic classes and after last night he wanted to know more so could help out when things got as bad as it did last night.
Camilla let go of Fabian's hand as she pushed open the door, wanting to see his reaction as he stepped into the lab. She turned around just in time to see Fabian follow her inside, his worried look slipping away into one of complete awe as he glanced around. "Welcome to The Lab." Camilla grinned causing Fabian to look back at her with a chuckle.
"This is amazing."
"I know right!" she laughed, dropping her stuff off by the coat stand, before jerking her head towards the comfy couches in the corner indicating to Fabian to go take a seat whilst she went over to the tea station to make them tea.
As she turned back around with two steaming mugs, she saw Fabian reading her Grimoire a serious look on his face, only looking up as she sat down next to him. "what's that look about?" she asked softly, his serious expression slightly freaking her out a little.
Fabian took the tea off his sister and turned so he was facing her on the couch, pushing the Grimoire her way to see him looking at the spell-casting lore page she had written weeks ago. Victor having finally agreed to move onto potion. Camilla having had enough of reading about the history and theory of magic and the man agreeing they could move onto something more exciting. "I think you overdrew from your magic last night..." he told her worried, pushing her book her way. Camilla glancing down to see written in her small neat handwriting;
'Mage/Protector's draw from magic stored within them. If they overdraw from this when casting, the lack of energy will then be taken from the Mage/Protector's life force. Which can in some cases kill the Mage/Protector.'
Camilla glanced up at Fabian and saw his clenched jaw, knowing the last sentence was what had him so worked up. Camilla picked up the book and shut it, before throwing it onto the table in the middle of the seating area. "Fabian I'm fine..." Camilla tried to reassure him, grabbing his hand.
"You could have died Cam," Fabian softly said, his voice breaking.
"But I didn't." She told him with a smile.
"You did so much more magic last year, with Rufus... how come that last night was too much for you?" Fabian asked trying to understand what was going on.
Camilla sighed she had asked Victor a similar question when they had first started classes. The girl leaned over and put her cup down before pulling her amulet out from where she had tucked it under her shirt. "I was given this by my Guardian on prom night. Unknown to me, he had embedded 80% of his magic into it, so when we were dealing with Rufus, and me and Nina were making the cup I siphoned its magic so I wouldn't burn up. I did it subconsciously."
"There is no magic left in it?" Fabian asked softly, knowing the answer before Camilla shook her head.
Fabian dropped the subject then, getting up to explore The Lab with curiosity, Camilla laughing as he took a whiff of the potion Victor and Camilla were currently working on, "Don't you miss the moments when we believed that anything and everything was possible?" Camilla asked her brother, looking at him across the room.
"you mean before the gods gifted you magic and we started to protect the world?" Fabian joked with a smile.
"Life always seemed easier than, before there were consequences and danger..."
"We still have each other, and that will never change," Fabian told her causing the biggest smile to grow onto her face glancing over at him to see an equally as big smile on his face. Even when they believed in the impossible the twins always stood side by side, and now when they knew magic was real but the danger was still real- the one thing that stayed constant was they still stood together, side by side, no matter what was thrown their way.
As Fabian and Camilla wandered into study hall, Patricia storming away from Eddie who was on the phone, stopping them to look to Camilla, "please don't say you're like Joy and think that idiot is cute!" she demanded of the girl, causing Fabian to instantly look uncomfortable.
Camilla looked to Eddie who waved at her as she looked his way and she happily waved back before looking to Patricia, "Honestly? I think he is the hottest guy you've hated so far..." which wasn't untrue, but not the answer Patricia wanted as she scoffed and walked off, leaving Fabian and Camilla to go back to whatever they were doing.
"I don't for once understand why Frobisher-Smythe would have to make everything so," Amber said as she led the Sibuna's from the girl's hallway to the stairs, they had all just gotten in from school and decided to re-group and try figure out what was going on. Fabian informing both girls about what had happened with Camilla and her overexerting herself and what that could do, causing Amber to insist they all kept something sugary on them in case Camilla needed a pick me up ever – thus part of their reasoning for heading downstairs.
"Amber!" Nina hushed her as Fabian leaned over the bannister to see if anyone was downstairs.
As he shook his head to say no one was there Amber continued, "As I was saying, doesn't an impossible quest actually have to be impossible?"
"Em, I'd say that's a basic requirement." Nina laughed.
"Sure, but wouldn't it be fun for once to have an easy quest?" Amber asked.
"I said it last time, it's meant to get harder not easier when it comes to these things," Camilla told them all causing Amber to pull a face in her direction.
"All I'm asking is for something that doesn't involve death and matching amounts of doom!" Amber told them as they wandered into the living room.
They were all sat relaxing when Camilla saw a tearful Poppy run down the stairs, causing her to jump up and run after her, "Poppy, what's happened?" she asked the girl who turned in surprise to see Camilla there.
Within seconds the small girl had launched herself into Camilla's arms. Camilla looked around and saw Fabian looking her way, and she nodded her head upstairs to say she was taking Poppy up to her room, causing her brother to nod.
Camilla didn't say anything to Poppy until they had reached the bedroom where she sat next to the girl and asked again, "What's happened?"
"I heard Jerome and Mara talking about my dad being in prison," she said softly, picking up the teddy Camilla had on her bed and smiling slightly as the head wobbled – clearly, she wasn't the only one who used her teddy as a place to hide something. "so, I went to talk to Mara..."
"she told you about the letter?"
"You knew?" Poppy looked up in shock causing Camilla to shake her head.
"I know of it; I've not actually read it," Camilla explained, causing Poppy to look confused for a second but Camilla didn't push it.
Poppy glanced around at Camilla's little section of her room, smiling as she saw the same prom photo of her and Jerome her mum had framed in a frame on the desk next to one of Fabian and Camilla, well it was mostly of a goat but the two twins could be seen in the background laughing. "What's your dad like Cam?" Poppy asked causing the girl to raise her eyebrows.
"My dad doesn't acknowledge I exist." Camilla said simply causing Poppy to look surprised, "I was blessed with the worlds greatest brother though, so I don't mind."
"Am I being too pushy, with this thing with dad?" Poppy asked in a small voice.
Camilla wrapped her arm around the girl and shook her head as she pulled her to her, "no way. Your dad wants to get to know you, he wants to be a dad. What I would do to have my dad be even the smallest bit interested in me. Every little girl deserves the chance to have a dad to look over them. They are a girl's number #2 support system, after a girl's big brother." Poppy smiled but it didn't quite reach her eyes causing Camilla to sigh. "there is something else, what is it?" she asked.
"it's the P.I Jerome hired... he's hounding him for money he doesn't have. I can't help but feel its all my faul-" Poppy paused as she saw the mischievous smile creep onto Camilla's face, "what have you done?"
"I may have paid off the P.I..." she told Poppy quickly.
"You paid off the investigator? Why would you do that."
"he knew who I was, he thinks I'm Jerome's girlfriend, and I thought Jerome would rather be in debt to me and pay me back than a P.I. whose fees will just increase every week he is waiting to be paid." Camilla explained, before smiling at Poppy, "Plus my little sister needed to know who her dad was, in a roundabout way the dude delivered." This caused Poppy to smile brightly and launch herself into Camilla's arms again hugging her tightly.
"You're up to something," Jerome said as he watched Camilla walk back into the house after dropping off Poppy at her own house. He had watched the two come down the stairs earlier with bright smiles on their faces, though Poppy's red eyes had shown she had been crying sometime before.
"I'm always up to something," Camilla simply told him before walking around him and back to her room, Amber had messaged her about them trying to figure out the hopscotch riddle – plus she had raided the kitchen so Camilla had snacks in case they needed them.
The 3 other Sibuna's where sat cross-legged on the floor looking at the photo on Amber's phone when she arrived in the room. Camilla sat down next to Fabian who instantly put an arm around her and pulled her closer, as if making sure she was still okay and well, Camilla put her head on his shoulder as he spoke, squeezing his hand to reassure him she was okay. "the first task was so easy, well relatively speaking."
"How are we ever going to figure out the right sequence?" Nina asked them all in despair, as she looked at the photo on the screen. They needed to figure this out, their lives were on the line.
