Series 2, Episode 26 ~ House of Payback
"FABIAN!" Camilla shouted as she watched her brother teeter on the edge of the chasm. Thankfully her shout had been enough of a warning for them all to pull back the beam enough to cause Fabian to lean back and Patricia grabbed his arm and pulled him to safety.
Panting they all looked at one another. This pushing method wasn't going to work not without them either losing the beam itself or losing a member of Sibuna.
"Hey, don't worry guys," Nina spoke up looking at them all, as Fabian reassured Camilla that he was fine, "we'll figure something out. We'll practice and get it next time. We're Sibuna right?" Amber nodded and Patricia looked hopeful, "Sibuna."
"Sibuna." They all repeated. Camilla's eyes on Fabian who was still looking at the Chasm in fear. Clearly and understandably he was shaken.
Fabian stayed back with Camilla as they all headed back to Roberts old office at the start of the tunnels. Amber and Alfie getting into an argument about her hair or something and Nina was trying to calm them down. That was until they all heard noises and Patricia hissed at them all to shut up. Slowly Nina crept forward to look through the peephole that showed the cellar. The girl let out a quiet gasp, and the twins looked at one another as they had an idea of what she saw. Victor had found the combination lock on the door and it was only a matter of time before he knew the numbers that granted him access to the room.
Nina looked back at them with a sigh of relief, the man must have left, "coast is clear." She told them causing them all to instantly relax – they were now pros at sneaking up to their bedrooms from the cellar so that part was not something they were worried about.
Camilla and Amber came out of Math's class and the blonde marched the pair straight to Alfie and Jerome. "Alfie, be a dear and hold this for me," Amber proceed to hand the boy her school bag, "I don't like it touching the floor," she explained simply at his confused look before she turned on her heel to go to the bathroom, leaving Camilla with Alfie and Jerome. Alfie watched Amber go looking bewildered as he now held her school bag. Jerome letting out a laugh as Camilla took the bag from Alfie who almost instantly dropped it to the floor, swinging it onto her shoulder with ease.
"Do you guys think Amber and I are compatible?" Alfie asked slowly as he gave Camilla a grateful smile.
"I don't think anyone is compatible with Amber," Jerome told him instantly, "except Amber."
"Maybe we're opposite ends of the batterie," Alfie mumbled.
"They do say opposites attract," Camilla told him, "I think she doesn't fully see you as a boyfriend yet... give it time Alf," Jerome let out a laugh and moved on down the hallway, Camilla watching Mara wait until he was away from the pair before running after him to talk to him. Whereas Camilla stayed with Alfie, it was easier to wait just for Amber.
Camilla's eyes followed Mara; she was curious to know what the pair were whispering about but she knew if it was important Jerome would tell her.
Amber walked out of the bathroom, with now freshly applied lipstick, cocking her head as she noticed Camilla had her bag but didn't say anything as she took the bag off her before looping her arm in Camilla's and the two girls headed off down the corridor.
"Amber! I want to break up!" Alfie called from behind them.
Camilla's eyes widening as the blonde turned both herself and Camilla around to face Alfie with such ease it was slightly scary. "No." was all she said simply.
"What?" Alfie demanded and Camilla had never wanted to be in a situation less, but Amber's iron tight grip on her arm was preventing the small protector from fleeing.
"no." Amber repeated with a smile, "See you in class." With that Camilla was dragged off to the student lounge giving Alfie a sympathetic look.
Weird couple things were happening all around, Camilla and Amber where sat in class waiting for Mrs Andrews to show up, Amber talking about some fashion school she had applied to for over the summer holidays and showing Camilla its website on her phone. Both girls looking up as Joy and Nina bumped into each other at the door, the awkwardness and tension could be felt by everyone in the room- though most people tried to pretend it wasn't happening. As Anubis House members, however, the two girls didn't even try to hide the fact, they were listening in. Joy saw their faces, she looked to Camilla and the girl knew she was thinking over Camilla's threat about her stepping in if Joy got in the way of Fabian's Happiness. With that, she turned to Nina with a brave smile.
"Hey," Joy started, "you and I haven't really spoken since... you know, Fabian and I had that connection."
Amber and Camilla both pulled faces at turned to look at each other at Joy's words 'connection' okay...
"had a connection..." Nina repeated clearly thinking along the lines of her two best girl friends two tables behind her, "by that you mean kissing my ex-boyfriend?"
"I feel bad about it-"
"Listen if this is you apologising-"
"I wasn't going to apologise." Joy said causing Nina's face to darken, "but I was going to say, I totally don't steal boyfriends. That's just not me." Camilla looked up and saw Fabian entering the room with Alfie, causing her to elbow Amber and jerk her head towards the door both of them seeing is confused face as he took in the scene, "so if you two are Fabiana-ing it again, then I won't let Fabian try to Jabian us anymore."
"Well," Nina seemed shocked at Joy's words and Camilla though she didn't agree with all of what Joy said couldn't help but feel a little proud of her friend for at least offering to back off a little. "Fabian and I are so not 'Fabiana' anymore. So, don't worry about it, Fabian's a free agent." With that Nina turned and took the seat next to Patricia, leaving Joy to sit next to Fabian who had no other choice than to take his seat unsure of how to react about what he had just overheard.
"How come your brother, is the one to find himself with love issues when you are clearly the better-looking Rutter?" Amber whispered to Camilla who couldn't help but smile at the girl's words.
"I think I have too much on my plate to add a relationship Ambs, if I was to get a boyfriend, he'd have to deal with the craziness of Sibuna and the fact he was dating a girl with powers," Camilla explained. Amber's eyes widened as she seemed to realise something but before she could tell Camilla Mrs Andrews walked in and started class.
Camilla looked over at her brother during their free period, he had tied a load of pen's together and it looked like he was trying to make a model something but what was unclear to Camilla. Amber was sat cross-legged on the couch next to Nina, whilst Camilla sat on the floor letting her play with her hair whilst the girl read over the potion essay on 'Nightshade; its uses in potion-making' that Victor had given her to write. Supposedly Mr Sweet had claimed if Camilla was doing extra classes within school hours, she had to do something that provided a grading or something. So now she had essays to write for magic classes.
Was she happy? not at all.
"Okay, Okay, Okay, Okay!" Fabian exclaimed causing the three girls with him to look up at him, "I think I've got it. We rig a counterweighted boom system that lifts up the beam and set it in place." With that Fabian showed them what he meant with his pen model on the table. "so, we simply lift it, swing it, and set it down." Fabian looked up at them with a grin to only receive confused looks in return. How they were going to set that up without Victor knowing was the first question going through Camilla's head, but clearly Amber had other ideas.
Getting to her feet she rounded the table and picked up the pen Fabian had used to represent the beam, "Why don't we just, lift the beam up on its end, and drop it down into place? To make sure it hits the mark I'm sure Camilla could find some spell or something to help guide it?" They all looked at Amber as if she was brilliant, "what? Did you all forget Cam had magic or something?"
"Cam what do you think?" Nina asked.
Camilla shrugged, "I could look for a spell in class but no promises,"
"I guess... that c-could work..." Fabian grumbled as he leant back in his chair in defeat, "I j-just didn't know m-magic could be involved in this."
Camilla saw through his stutters and patted his leg in sympathy. Fabian wanted to be the hero of this challenge to prove to something to Nina. "Too bad, magic scrooge. You may as well get used to all this magic nonsense as you're my brother," Camilla told him causing the two other girls to laugh.
Camilla was not surprised to see Victor humming away in the lab as he tended his plants, it was honestly the part of magic she assumed he enjoyed most potion making and herbology.
"I think I actually hate you," she announced to him as she waved the 10-page essay in his direction before trudging towards the workbench to throw it onto there for him to mark.
"I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that," was the only response she got from the man.
Camilla rolled her eyes and threw herself onto the squashy couch with a mutter of, "I'm not feeling very worky today,"
"Well if you don't want to work, we can finally discuss the little display you put on at the ball," Victor asked, looking over at her with his eyebrows raised expectantly.
The ball a topic Camilla had been hoping to avoid talking about with the man as much as possible. Camilla let out a sigh of defeated and raised her hands into the air to wave them about as she explained, knowing she looked like a child but not caring, "I am not going to apologise because we both know I have no control over my emotions when they come on all of a sudden and you don't realise how angry I was in that moment, I can't always control it!" at the end of her rant she got no response which caused the girl to sit up and look at the man with his baby blue gardening gloves on.
"I wasn't talking about the flashing lights..." Victor told her there was something in his tone which made her think there was something he wasn't telling her to do with the lights.
"What then are you talking about?" Camilla asked confusion inking its way into her tone.
"Don't you think its slightly strange that a thrash metal band suddenly knew classical music?"
"No?" Camilla all but squeaked.
"A modify memory charm is a dangerous high-level spell, Camilla." Victor warned, "it has serious lasting effects that if performed wrong can cause people to go insane." Camilla paled and gulped; she was just trying to help Patricia she didn't mean to hurt anyone. "There is a reason we start on smaller spells and build from there. Its to provide you with knowledge and the means to perform the more dangerous spells without causing pain to you, others or the Ma'at in the world! Class today is going to be you starting your next essay for me, explaining to me in detail why what you did was wrong."
Camilla couldn't help the loud groan of annoyance that left her mouth as she let herself fall back against the couch; this was going to be the longest hour of her life.
The Sibuna's were all in their clearing when she met up with them after class, Fabian and Alfie had somehow gotten a tree log standing upright ready for them to practice tipping the beam across the chasm.
"Cam, great you stand over there-" Nina pointed to the stool she had set up to represent the place the beam would fall onto on the other side of the chasm.
"Eh..." Patricia interrupted her as Camilla dropped her bag with everyone else's and pulled out her Grimoire, Victor's essay writing had meant she could look through some old books and scrolls and she'd found a more powerful version of her 'Motus' spell that might work to help them but she wasn't sure she'd yet to try it out. "Shouldn't Cam stand with us? She won't be on the other side in the actual tunnels."
Nina went a little red with embarrassment as she realised her mistake and nodded her head. Camilla taking her place beside them all.
10 times the Sibuna's tried to tip the tree onto the stool.
10 times Camilla muttered, "Phasmatos Motus," in order to guide the log.
1 time the spell worked, causing a nose bleed violently (she felt it go into her mouth and the metal taste she got from it was one she never wanted to taste again) this gave her control of the log as it fell, mainly to guide it to the stool.
The moment Nina signalled for them to stop Amber raced to her bag to grab her makeup wipes for Camilla, as Fabian rushed to his sister's side with a chocolate bar in hand for her. Camilla smiled gratefully at the two of them as she let Amber wipe her face, blood was not a look she wanted to go back to Anubis house wearing, "So out of ten times, the one time Camilla could work her magic we managed to hit the target," Camilla shot Nina a glare. She read the subtext between her words and didn't appreciate it.
"This is a lot harder than it looks," Camilla argued back with the girl though her menacing look probably wasn't as menacing with Amber dabbing at her face and her chewing furiously on chocolate, the sweet treat she could feel energising her but the spell was one that required way more magic than her normal 'Motus spell', "I don't think you realise that."
"Still," Fabian spoke up seeing Nina open her mouth to argue with Camilla, he liked Nina a lot and because he liked her, he interrupted, she could never win in an argument with Camilla. "10% hit rate is pretty..."
"Not great," Patricia teased causing Fabian to smile.
"Hurry Girl!" Camilla groaned as Nina looked around in worry as they both heard the voice; couldn't the blood spirit give them at least a week off? "this is not a game for children!" if it wasn't a bloody game for children why was the bloody spirit using children to complete the tasks to get to the mask. Camilla desperately wanted to shout something along those lines to the air but knew she'd look insane.
"There is not enough time to keep practising," Nina informed them glancing at Camilla asking her the silent question of if she could do the spell. Camilla nodded her head once; she knew it sap everything from her to do so but they needed to get the beam down. At Camilla's nod, Nina turned to the rest of the Sibuna's, "we'll sneak down now during lunch, whilst Vera is on her shopping run."
"It will have to be later tonight," Fabian stuttered slightly looking around at them all apologetically, "Joy asked me too... I've got to be a study buddy..." he trailed off.
"After lights out then," Nina bitterly spoke before turning on her heel grabbing her bag and storming back to the school.
The first thing Camilla did when school was over was rush back to the house to make herself a cup of tea. The chocolate had helped but nothing seemed to work as well as a cup of tea. She let out a small moan of delight as she took her first sip causing Eddie (who was making some extreme sandwich) to look up at her in amusement.
"I never got tea." He told the girl with a smile, "we are coffee drinkers across the pond."
"Coffee makes me sleepy," Camilla told him as she pulled a face, "I am under the belief that there is a tea out there for everyone. You just haven't found yours yet." She told the boy with a knowing nod of her head, putting her mug down and pushing it towards him, "try a classic English Breakfast tea."
Eddie took the mug and gave it a sip before spitting it into the sink, "your tea-making skills are awful,"
Camilla looked shocked and with one quick decisive motion grabbed a mug off the counter and threw it, Eddie. "You take that back you squirrelly Jerk!" she yelled at him fury raging in her eyes.
Fabian's widened as he wandered into the kitchen and stepped in front of the pair saying, "Okay we all have had a rough week, so let's just calm down. Eddie, you apologize for offending Camilla's tea-making skills and Cam you apologize for throwing a mug at his face."
Eddie and Camilla looked at each other for a second before the both burst out laughing. "Sorry Jerk," Camilla told him with a smile.
"Whatever you say, Nerd," Eddie replied with a bite of his sandwich.
Amber and Alfie were still laughing at the story of how Camilla had accidentally smashed Vera's favourite mug because Eddie insulted her tea-making skills as the Sibuna's crept down into the tunnels. Fabian, however, was looking at his sister in worry. She looked calm and confident, but the death-like grip on her Grimoire causing her knuckles to go white and the fact she kept pushing her hair out of her face told him she was scared she'd ruin this for them all.
They had one chance; they couldn't fail.
In fact, the twins were so worried about running the plan they missed the obvious signs that something was wrong – the first being the cellar door being unlocked, the second being the carefully placed cabinet too cast a shadow into the corner of the room. A shadow big enough to hide a man in.
Camilla watched as the Sibuna's grunted getting the beam into a horizontal position, once they had Nina looked towards Camilla. "You ready?" the girl nodded her head. "Ready? And GO!"
The Sibuna's let go of the beam and Camilla shouted, "Phasmatos Motus!" Using both hands to gather the air and imagine they were on either side of the beam guiding it down into the right place. Camilla closed her eyes as she once again felt the metal taste in her mouth and with a grunt her knees gave way causing her to fall to the ground just as the beam landed in place. Amber was the one to help Camilla up, holding out a flask of tea she had brought along for the girl as the rest of the Sibuna's celebrated.
Once she saw Camilla take the first drink of tea and her pale face got a little colour back into it (trying not to be grossed out at the fact Camilla used the sleeve of her jumper to wipe the blood from her face) Amber turned to them all, "Okay! So, who's going over first?"
The Sibuna's all fell silent. Camilla knowing, she wouldn't be the first one over because in the weak state she was in she probably would fall into the chasm.
"Wow! Don't all jump at once," Patricia spoke up, before squaring her shoulders and taking the first step onto the beam. "see its not all-" before she could finish her sentence she was cut off by a sharp pointy pendulum narrowly missing his face as it swung out in front of her. Maybe this wasn't going to be as easy as she thought.
