Chapter 2: The First Lady of District 12
Several weeks later, Peeta and I meet privately up in the living quarters of the mayoral residence. The district clerk directs us to sign the marriage license and then Peeta puts the poker in the fire, stoking it up. Presenting a piece of bread, he toasts it over the flames of the hearth before breaking off a piece and feeding it to me. I return the favor. The bread is filled with nuts and fruits.
Clad in my blue Reaping dress (Prim offered to take up Mother's wedding gown, but I declined, as I've always been more simple in my tastes), I smile weakly, nervous as Peeta takes me in his arms. Somewhere far, far away, I hear the holy man bless us as husband and wife. I hold back for a moment, my grey eyes solemn in the firelight. Tilting my head, I permit my….. husband to kiss me, my eyes fluttering shut as I return our wedding kiss, as we embark on the first moment of our marriage.
Married. I am married. I am Mrs. Peeta Mellark. The Baker's wife. The Mayor's wife. I will live here, with him, in the Justice Building.
When Peeta and I break this kiss at last, I breathe out, for Prim and Rory and the handful of people gathered to hear, "I love my husband." To Peeta: "I love you."
He beams. "I love you, Madame First Lady of District 12."
A year later, Peeta completes Mayor Undersee's partial term and then runs for reelection. He has proven extremely popular, even with people in the Seam, and I am pleased when my sister and brother-in-law now support my husband this cycle.
Peeta wins election in his own right easily, and several weeks later, he stands on the steps of the Justice Building, places his hand on the Treaty of Treason and raises his right hand. Head Peacekeeper Remus Cray swears him in.
"Repeat after me: I, Peeta Joseph Mellark, do solemnly swear…."
"I, Peeta Joseph Mellark, do solemnly swear…."
"…. That I will protect, and uphold the rights of every citizen of District 12…"
"…. That I will protect, and uphold the rights of every citizen of District 12…"
"So help you Panem?"
"So help me Panem."
"Congratulations, Mr. Mayor. Very best wishes."
Amidst the wild cheering, Peeta turns to where I am at his side. Beaming, he leans in and kisses me, the First Lady of District 12. His inauguration complete, he steps forward to the podium to deliver his inaugural address…..
