Pregnant.

That one word glared back at her on the stick. Andy knew she was but seeing it on the tiny screen confirmed it even more. She never expected to be in this position, thinking she was a career woman at heart. But knowing there was new life in her gave her a different perspective. Somehow everything fell into place and nothing was wrong. Well, the only thing wrong was the lack of relationship between her and the baby's father. It was a drunken hook-up between co-workers after his best friend's funeral. They had both wanted to forget the pain of losing something they knew so comforted each other in a way that satisfied them both.

Prior to the funeral, they had gotten closer with one another. Asking each other for advice, sharing meals in his office and near-death experiences due to their line of work. So, it was only natural; that after the wake, both having a little too much to drink, that they would end up in the same bed together pulling each other's clothes off like their life depended on it. She was on the pill so condoms weren't necessary but maybe in hindsight, it would've been for the best.

Andy knew she had to tell Robert sooner rather than later; not only because he was the father but because she couldn't be seven months pregnant and running into burning buildings whilst carrying thirty pounds worth of gear on her back. He was her Captain and he needed to know the reason why she couldn't be on Ladder or Engine in a few months. She estimated herself to be six weeks along and there was no doubt he was the father; he was the only man she had slept with recently.

"Andy, are you home?" Maya shouted as she jogged into their apartment. She had just been on her morning run before work.

"Yeah, I'll be out in a sec." She responded. Andy frantically hid away all evidence of the information she just found out. She threw the box in the trash, covering it with what was already in there and put the test at the back of the cupboard so that Maya couldn't find it. Once everything was put away, she headed into the living room where Maya was.

"You okay?" Maya enquired seeing how flustered Andy looked.

"Yeah, I'm good. Why wouldn't I be?"

"No reason, you just don't look quite yourself."

"Didn't get much sleep, that's all." Andy brushed her off, not wanting to reveal all.

"Okay, well I'm going for a shower and then we can go to work, yeah?"

Andy nodded whilst making herself busy in the kitchen. Her mind was full of the different ways to tell Robert that she was carrying their child.

Once she was at the station, the nerves grew. After the morning line up, she hid in the turnout room, pacing back and forth whilst mumbling to herself to get her speech perfect. She didn't want to mess up one of the most important moments of her life. She was never good with speeches, especially public ones, but this was unlike anything before. This would change the course of her life for good, as well as Robert's.

Andy was pulled out of her thoughts after hearing Sullivan bellow for her from his office. She sighed and braced herself for what was coming next.

"You wanted to see me, Captain?" Andy asked, walking into his office and closing the door behind her.

"The Californian Fire Department has been on the phone. The wildfires are getting out of hand so we have been asked to not only send supplies, but also personnel. So, I wanted you to let the team know." Robert spoke, leaning against his desk with his arms folded.

"Oh… okay."

"Did you expect something else?" He asked after noticing how confused she looked.

"No, no, no. No, I just… I'll let the team know for you." She responded before heading out of the office.

"Herrera, are you okay?" Robert spoke softly.

She turned around smiling. "Everything is okay." She replied. They hadn't spoken much since that night; it was only work-related talk that occurred between them. But Andy knew that had to change at some point as they were about to be in each other's lives forever.

Andy turned around to head out of the office for good but once again she stopped in her tracks. She gripped onto the door handle, looked up to the ceiling and spun back around to enter the office again. She closed the door behind her for privacy. "Robert, there's something I need to tell you. I… I am pregnant and it's yours." She looked at his face trying to gage his reaction. Robert stood there in utter shock, not believing the words that just came out of her mouth. "And I know it's definitely yours because there hasn't been anyone since, you know." She cocked her head hoping he would pick up on the memories of the night their child was conceived. "Say something, anything. Please Robert." She begged.

"I… I don't know what to say" Robert replied, "How long have you known?"

"Since this morning, officially. Though I've been feeling off for a couple of weeks." She spoke honestly.

"Are you keeping it?" He asked.

"Yes? Maybe? I don't know. And although its my body, my decision, you are the father and you get to have an opinion on this." Andy talked as she made her way closer to Robert.

"Okay" Robert looked into Andy's eyes, "We're having a baby?" He asked, smiling from ear to ear.

Andy couldn't help but reiterate those same words to confirm his statement. Robert instinctively took Andy into an embrace, beaming with joy. He, too, had never seen himself as a father. After his wife died, he thought he would be alone forever so now that there was a little person who shared his DNA was remarkable to Robert.

And just like Andy, it felt like everything was right in the world. They might not be together but they were now a family and Robert was determined to make Andy's life as easy as it could be, no matter what would happen between them and the baby.
