A/N: Hey, hope you're all doing well. Thank you so much for the feedback on my last chapter, it means a lot. I hope this one lives up to your expectations. Also, I just wanted to add that Robert is now Battalion Chief and Jack is Captain, not Maya, mainly because I think he deserved it more but also so this story works out. And I have yet to decide about whether Ryan is dead because I'm unsure if he's going to appear in this story yet. Anyways, hope you enjoy this chapter. Let me know your thoughts.
Andy was now halfway through her pregnancy. Everyone at the station knew that she was expecting but they didn't know that Robert was the father. And no matter how many times they asked her, Andy never revealed that it was him. It was mainly due to not wanting to end either of the careers but also because they didn't want to become the gossip of the station.
But that didn't stop them from having late night conversations about their baby. Andy would always make the time to head into his office, at around 3am when everyone was sleeping, so that they could talk. Their conversations usually started with talking about the baby but it soon changed to talks about their childhoods and other random things that came to mind. They were very clear that they wanted to raise their child together as co-parents, not realising that either of them had feelings deeper that stretched beyond just friends.
Andy had taken the day off work for her 20-week anatomy scan. If this was a normal situation, she would've just taken the afternoon off but both she and Robert agreed that the team might've caught on if they had both take the same time off work. So, they agreed that Robert would work as normal and then when it came time for the scan, he would go and pick her up to arrive at the hospital together.
Andy hadn't seen her baby since her 12-week appointment and Robert had only seen the ultrasound picture that Andy had given him, which now adorned his fridge. When Andy found out about where he had put the picture, she joked about it being such a cliché movie moment. It never occurred to her that Robert could be such a family man but she was liking the chance at knowing the softer side of Robert. No one else had that privilege, only her and soon their baby.
Robert had made the short journey to Andy's apartment, which she shared with Maya. He had just about remembered the way there from his last visit, when he unexpectedly turned up at her doorstop to celebrate her medal of valour award after the Aid Car crash. Once Robert had pulled up in a parking space, he dropped Andy a text to let her know that he was there/ Shortly afterwards, Andy climbed into the car and they set off for the hospital.
Upon their arrival at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Robert and Andy swiftly made their way o the waiting room on the labour and delivery floor. They were looking through the magazines that were scattered on the coffee table, noting how much baby gear they still needed to get. A few moments later Dr Helm called Andy through to the consulting room. Being an intern, Helm had to work on different specialties and this time, it was obstetrics and gynaecology which wasn't something she was particularly interested in but she needed to round out her education. Andy followed Helm into the room with Robert trailing behind her, both filled with anticipation of what was to come.
Andy had followed the instructions Helm had given her and now she was led on the bed, with her top scrunched up under her breasts. Robert couldn't help but smile at the small curve that adorned her stomach. He couldn't quite believe that there was new life inside of her; life that they both created together.
Helm had placed the gel on Andy's stomach quickly followed by the probe and soon enough, the parents-to-be were staring at their child whilst the sound of the heartbeat filled the room. Joy was plastered on both their faces but Helm's was reading different.
"What's wrong?" Andy enquired after glancing over to the intern.
"I'm not sure. Let me go and find Dr Deluca." Helm responded in a calm manner, not wanting to upset her patient. She quickly put down the probe and exited the room to page Dr Deluca.
Andy immediately turned to Robert who had instinctively grabbed a hold of her hand to let her know that he was there for her. Helm re-entered the room with Dr Carina Deluca following behind. Once she took notice of the people in the room, she knew how personal this would become. Her relationship with Maya had just started but all her conversations with Maya made her feel like she knew both as if they had been friends her entire life.
"Chief Sullivan, I didn't expect to see you here." Carina spoke as she sat on the stool by the ultrasound machine.
"Um… he's the baby's father. But please don't tell anyone, especially Maya." Andy replied.
"Don't worry, patient confidentiality" Carina smiled, "Right, let's look at this bambino." She continued, placing the probe on Andy's stomach just like Helm had done previously. Carina stayed quiet for some time which didn't ease Andy or Robert at all.
"Is… is there something wrong?" Robert asked. Carina remained silent as she studied the ultrasound image.
"I guess that's a yes." Andy stated nervously.
Carina stopped the ultrasound and wiped the gel off Andy's stomach. "It appears that your baby has a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. We will have to do a more conclusive ultrasound in a few days but it is likely that your baby has it."
"What is this Congenital Diaphragm… thing?" Robert asked in shock.
"Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. CDH for short. Your baby's diaphragm has failed to form correctly so the abdominal contents have herniated into the chest cavity, which has resulted in the lungs from developing properly." Carina explained as Andy began fighting back the tears. Robert gripped onto her hand even tighter as the words escaped Carina's mouth.
"Will the baby be okay? After they're born?" Andy questioned.
"There is currently a 50 per cent chance of survival at birth but we won't know until we do a further exam. I'm sorry this isn't the news you were expecting today but I will do everything I can so your little girl has the best chances."
"It's a girl?" Andy asked through the tears that were now streaming down her face.
"Yes, she is" Carina smiled, "You are free to leave, whenever you're ready." Carina said as she walked out.
"I…" Andy couldn't find the words to describe how she felt.
"Hey, hey. It's okay. I'm here." Robert spoke softly pulling Andy into an embrace as the tears continued coming. When the day started, it was filled with joy but after their half an hour appointment, they were feeling nothing but sadness. Their daughter was sick and they didn't know what was going to happen; they now faced the unknown.
