A/N: Hello, sorry for the delay in this chapter. I was ill last week so there wasn't a lot of writing that happened. I don't particularly like this chapter, maybe just the end (because of Surrera fluff), so it might not make a lot of sense or be any good. It is also based off 'Ice Ice Baby' because it's one of my favourite episodes and it worked with this story. As always, don't be afraid to let me know your thoughts, they mean a lot x
"My water just broke."
"Uh oh." Dean's face dropped upon noticing the newly formed puddle of liquid on the floor between the mother of his child's legs.
"Get me to the hospital, right away!" JJ demanded. She had been adamant about having a hospital birth with all the medication available to her since she had revealed that she was pregnant a couple of weeks ago.
"We can't. Roads are blocked with snow and ice. No one is able to move." Andy spoke as she walked into the beanery to grab the jar of pickles that had taken her fancy. At first, she thought it was just a stereotypical craving that all the books and movies mentioned, but soon enough she as craving them all the time.
"Well, I am not having this baby in a fire station. You need to give me something to stop this baby from coming." JJ retorted before a contraction overcame her.
"We're not doctors, JJ." Andy subtly reminded her. When the team found out that JJ was having Dean's child, they were shocked. His mother had wanted him to settle down with someone before starting a family but it seemed that the universe had other ideas. Andy was slightly jealous that JJ was having the perfect, healthy baby that she so wished to have but Robert constantly reminded her that once their daughter was born, she would beat those odds and live her life to the fullest.
Andy had taken JJ into the showers whilst Maya had called her Carina for tips on how to deliver the baby safely. Even though they had training in the delivery of babies, it seemed that all their knowledge went out the window when it came to welcome the latest firehouse baby. After she ended the phone call, Maya made her way into the show block where JJ was hunched over the sinks, bracing herself though her contractions.
"So, when is your girlfriend getting here?" She spoke as the contraction eased.
"JJ, she's not coming. She can't get here. But she's given me advice and apparently, a warm shower will help with the pain." Maya replied calmly guiding her into one of the shower cubicles.
A few hours later, JJ was led on the floor with Andy to the left of her and Maya down at the business end after becoming an OB for the day.
"Okay, JJ. One last push for me." Maya announced as she prepared to deliver the baby. Within seconds, JJ had given birth to a beautiful baby girl. Maya had wrapped her up in a blanket before handing her over to JJ.
They were both wrapped up in the adrenaline rush that neither of them had noticed how Andy had silently left the shower block with tears streaming down her face and her arms wrapped around her stomach. She had found refuge against the lockers hoping to stop the tears. But as soon as Dean and Vic came bouncing in to see the new baby, the tears flowed fast. Andy retreated into her bunk hoping to get some privacy from everyone. Robert had caught a glimpse of her walking into the bunk so immediately followed but was stopped by Vic's voice.
"Give her a minute, Cap." Vic spoke, still unaware of the relationship between the two of them. He couldn't help but glare at her before placing a hand on the door handle and opening it up.
The opened door revealed Andy hunched over the edge of the bed, gripping tightly onto the mattress to focus on the pain she was feeling somewhere else. She was trying her hardest not to let anymore tears fall but the feeling of Robert sitting next to her and placing his arm around her shoulders, only made them fall once more. She leant into his chest allowing the rhythm of his heartbeat to calm her.
Right from the start of her pregnancy Andy had just wanted everything to be perfect and normal. But then finding out that her baby had a hernia changed everything and she felt like she was the worst mother in the world for allowing her baby to be ill in the place where she was supposed to be the safest. It had taken weeks for Robert to convince Andy that she wasn't the one who caused this to happen.
By morning, the snow had cleared. Everyone who had taken refuge at the station made their way home and so did Andy and Robert. In the two months that they had officially became a couple, Andy had spent more time at Robert's house than she did at her own apartment, which she shared with Maya. She would only pop back there whenever she needed a book about fire safety or another pair of socks because she refused to do her washing at his. Thankfully Maya hadn't questioned where she was as Maya had been spending more time at Carina's. Though, that made Andy even more nervous because she didn't want Carina to accidently spill the beans on her relationship with Robert. Somehow, they had managed to keep their relationship out of the station and wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible.
Instead of heading to bed, Andy had hopped into the bath to warm herself up before spending the day sleeping. Robert had quietly walked past the bathroom door and heard her muffling tears once again. He made the decision to enter the room and asked her to move forward whilst he stripped off his clothes. He joined her in the water that was now at a lukewarm temperature. Andy was not resting against Robert's front and she allowed herself to truly relax as Robert hummed a tune whilst swirling circles across her stomach.
"Are you okay?" Robert asked softly, planting kisses along her shoulders and the back of her neck hoping to ease the tension he could sense in them.
"No" She paused, thinking how to explain her thoughts, "Since finding out about this baby, I've just wanted everything to be normal, including the birth. But that's not going to happen now. And helping JJ yesterday… I don't know, it just brought it home how this pregnancy isn't normal." She rambled on.
"Andy, no pregnancy is normal because there's no such thing. Remember, our little girl is a fighter and she will be okay. We all will." Robert reassured not only Andy but himself too. He had been having doubts about a lot of things but didn't tell Andy as he didn't want to put anymore stress on her.
"Well, you're definitely okay now that you aren't in the pathway of that dog." She joked.
"Hey! That dog brought back some serious trauma."
"I know, I know. But you're Sullivan, the Battalion Chief, you aren't meant to fear anything." Andy teased him.
"How did you even find out about the dog? You were with JJ the entire time." He asked.
"Oh, I have my ways." She lifted her head to face him just so he could see the smirk that adorned it.
Robert couldn't help but let out a chuckle. He never imagined they would be where they were now all those months ago. It was just a drunk, grief-filled hook-up that wasn't supposed to go anywhere. But by some type of twisted fate, they were now going to be in each other's lives no matter what would happen to their daughter or their relationship. But Robert didn't want it any other way.
"We should probably head to bed. This bath is now as cold as it is outside and it's very clear that you need rest." Robert announced as Andy finished yawning.
Andy nodded before standing up and getting out of the bath. She wrapped the towel around her body, leaving Robert to drain the bath.
By the time Robert had made his way into the bedroom, Andy was led in bed wearing one of Robert's crew shirts, as hers no longer made it over her stomach, and a pair of pj shorts. Robert carefully got into his side of the bed as he thought Andy was sleeping. However, once he got comfy, Andy moved closer to him and led her head on his chest. Robert wrapped his arm around her frame, letting his hand gently stroke her arm.
They laid in silence for a while, enjoying the company of each other, before Andy broke the silence: "I love you." She mumbled in her half-sleepy state.
"I love you, too." Robert replied quietly, kissing her forehead. Andy froze. She believed that Robert was asleep so wouldn't hear her late-night confession but his response shocked her. Yes, they had been together for two months but they had never said those three little words to each other before. This was now foreign territory but it felt right for both. This was now the start of something beautiful and they just hoped that their little girl would be with them to share it with.
