The Mummy Groom: Return of the Shadow Games

Chapter 2

Marik glared down at the item within his hand as it glittered subtly in the bright sunlight filtering in through the nearby window. His sister had been plagued with several nightmares throughout the week that left her a mess. He had never seen his elder sibling so shaken, which in turn affected him more than if someone had struck him over the head. Her sudden start nearly caused him to have a heart attack as she sat upright with eyes that shot about the room. "Ishizu?" He might as well have shouted her name with how she flinched but it was enough for her attention to focus on him. "I'm right here, sister, it's alright." His hand gently grasped her own as her breathing leveled and her eyes cleared from the fog that had settled over them.

Their gazes rose as the third sibling, Odion, gently placed a tray of food next to her on the bed. "I went ahead and made enough for everyone." His lips lifted into a warm smile as she insisted that the brothers went first and earned a soft protest when he instead placed one of her favorite pastries upon a napkin then placed it within her hand. "Please, Ishizu, you must regain your strength if your predictions are true." He felt his stomach twist with worry when he spotted Marik's gaze honed on the Millennium rod. The youngest had not left their sister's side nearly all week, save for the occasional trips to the washroom or when a customer asked for him directly. Odion did not blame Marik for his distaste for the item. Their father had not been a kind man to any of the siblings and just the sight of the ancient relic made them loathe the man more.

"How many times must I have to tell you?! Our family holds a sacred and distinct honor that none can compare to!" The man's open palm met the desk, earning a flinch from the woman before him as she attempted to cover Ishizu's ears from his harsh tone. She ushered her to the other room but did not see that the young girl remained within the hallway to listen. Her father, the man who was head of their clan, would surely not quiet for a while yet and something told her to remain nearby. "We have not allowed another soul to run this museum that wasn't of our bloodline, as in accordance to the ancient ways! Our original duty was to protect and ensure the secrecy of where the great pharaohs of old were laid to rest. I don't need to remind you that thanks to the rise of tomb raiders and treasure hunters our clan is nearly extinct! Those greedy savages desecrated several sacred places and have killed hundreds of us!"

Her mother's words, which she could not hear fully, asked if it was not better that the inheritance were to pass to their daughter and a loud impact was sounded when his clenched fist met the desk surface. "Please, dear, she is of flesh and blood. Marik is still far too young to understand the traditions and his siblings tell me that he wishes for a life out of the shadows."

"I will not allow it! Tradition is something I will not break!" His voice caused Ishizu's skin to crawl as he moved around the desk and grasped her mother's shoulders roughly. "I cannot pass our legacy to anyone else but our male heir! Marik is my true son so he shall be initiated instead of that wretched girl and outsider that you brought into this clan!"

Shame filled her chest, hurt filling every fiber as he began to place blame on her mother's lineage. A hand rested upon her shoulder that drew her attention to the person who had discovered her and felt her lip quiver slightly as Odion knelt next to her. "Brother," she sniffled softly. "If I had been born a boy, then would father wouldn't be as angry with mother?" Alarm crossed his features but he quickly collected her in his arms. To find his older sister on the verge of tears was enough to worry him but the words she had spoken caused the seeds of anger to fill his chest. Their eyes widened as the door swung open. They had been found! Odion quickly released Ishizu, nearly causing her to stumble as she met the opposite wall, and cried out when she spotted her father standing over her adopted brother's unconscious form, a golden relic she recognized that was used during ceremonies from her studies of the ancient texts, clenched within his grasp. "O-Odion!" Her hands trembled as she shook his shoulders, begging for a response, and felt a chill slip down her spine when she spotted the laceration behind his head that matched with the edge of the rod her father held. "Why, father?! Why have you struck Odion?! He didn't do anything wrong!" Fear pierced her heart when she spotted the blazing embers that were her father's eyes and flinched when he pointed the rod's eye in her direction.

A much smaller shadow stretched across the carpet, causing all to freeze when a voice heavy with sleep called out to them. His eyes widened as he took in the scene before him and he hurried to his siblings' sides. Adrenaline pumped loudly through his veins when he spotted the wound upon Odion's head and felt his being practically explode with heat when he spotted the unshed tears swimming in Ishizu's eyes. His head craned backward as he turned his gaze up towards their father, who had quickly taken a step backward. "Father?" The siblings felt as though ice slipped down their spines when the door behind the man towering over them swung inwards, revealing their mother's unconscious form upon the floor with a marking similar to Odion's that was upon her cheek.

It had been a mixed blessing when the man had passed away, leaving the siblings and their mother to see fit to the clan's needs. Their mother had been the guardian of the Millenium necklace while their father the Millenium rod, which were handed down by birthright to the true Ishtar legacies when their mother had too passed. Marik, though, resented the rod and his first deed as head was to have the cursed item buried with his father's corpse. The necklace that now hung around Ishizu's neck was now their sole heirloom besides the museum. Under Marik and Ishizu's guidance, their clan had now dispersed to the far corners of the globe in search of what they each desired. They still kept in touch with the Ishtars and there were many that would stop by to converse.

And here they were, the only family Odion has known, with their bloodline causing difficulties for them that might even threaten their very existence. He was not directly involved but he would do everything he could to ensure the safety of his siblings. It was the least he could do to repay them for all that they had done for him. His hand raised her own when she had yet to take a bite into the pastry he had passed her. "Please, Ishizu, we cannot let it go to waste."

. . . .

It had been agreed that Atem would stay with the Mutou family, at least until the already wild rumors around town would calm, but that did not mean he was away from Tea any more than he could help. He would ensure that she had slipped into sleep peacefully, depart for the nigh, then return early enough to start the fire so that her home would be warm upon her waking. It had been a week now with this routine but the town was still antsy about the newcomer that he would often resort to as minimal interaction with the townsfolk as possible. Even when he had been properly introduced and the proper paperwork that claimed he was a Mutou refused to satisfy many of the older citizens. He was particularly weary of the female population that took every opportunity to present themselves before him. They had somehow caught on to their separate appearances in practically one day, much to both of their displeasure, but Atem gracefully handled each encounter. Being a former pharaoh had helped him learn several skills that were proving useful in this less extravagant yet more fulfilling lifetime. The time difference here though was much different then that of Cairo and the temperature often left him sitting before the fire for a bit longer than he liked to chase away the chill that always seemed to enter his bones during his minimal exposure to the elements no matter how quick or the number of layers he donned. His gaze slipped from the dancing flames to the sleeping girl behind him as the cold receded from throughout his body.

The second he had stepped inside the residence this morning he could feel a piercing gaze that threatened to burn him. It was still dark, meaning Tea would still be asleep for a few more minutes at least, but a soft sound caused his heart to quicken. A whisper in his ear made his step to quicken as he hurried towards her bedroom and came to a sudden halt when he found her standing before the open window. An area rug the color of mint leaves matched the chiffon curtains that made the canopy bed and there were two simple honey stained dressers on each side of doorway he was in but his attention was locked on the figure who had yet to move. Her head tilted in his direction as he called to her softly, the long sleeved nightgown hugging her figure catching the pale moonlight as she took a step towards him. Alarm filled him when he spotted her glazed eyes as she took another step. He entered the room as worry filled his chest when her barefoot met the bedpost and her expression remained slack. She was not one to be clumsy, nor had a history of sleepwalking, so why this happening? The faintest of glimmers caught his eye when her body bent oddly…was that a thread wrapped around her wrist? His hand rose instinctively to steady her as she tripped on the carpet and flinched as the Millennium puzzle around his neck flashed brilliantly, revealing that the threat was also wrapped around her other appendages and felt ice slip down his spine when he spotted one wrapped around her slender neck. Anger began to fill him as the gaze from before returned along with a malicious presence that cause his blood to grow cold. A snicker filled his ears as her body jerked unnaturally forward until they were mere inches apart. Seeing her like this, with no sparkle in her eyes or grace in her step, was killing him as the threads tightened and moved her in an almost mocking dance around him as the snicker came again. His hands rose to her shoulders as he rested his forehead against her own, his amethyst eyes searching her own for any sign that she was in pain but found none. They were as empty as the desert was vast. He silently apologized to her, asking for her forgiveness as he tightened his hold, and called upon the relic around his neck to sever whatever was attached to her. In a wave of energy radiating from the golden pyramid, the threads snapped and disappeared in wisps of smoke.

He had quickly caught her before she could fall to the ground, relief filling him when he found her sleeping soundly, and quickly moved to the parlor where he had placed her upon the chaise he himself had occupied the previous day then turned his attention to starting the fire so as to keep her warm. Standing, his eyes briefly rested upon her sleeping form as she shifted slightly, then made his way to the bedroom. All that had happened no more than an hour ago but his skin still prickled with unease as he entered the room. His expression grew serious as he crossed the room and closed the window with a click. There wasn't any sign that it had been opened from the outside, no traces of foul play either, but that didn't mean something couldn't have slipped inside. Amethyst eyes combed every corner of the ceiling and every shadow that lingered within the room as the remaining traces of whatever had been present flickered then dissipated as if it had never been there to begin with.

A violent sneeze from the other room nearly caused his hammering heart to skip a beat as he jumped slightly from the sudden loud sound and he hurried to the parlor as he heard her call for him. Relief filled him when her sparkling cobalt eyes met his own as he knelt next to the chaise, one of her hands cupping his cheek. "Did you move me out here to make sure I would stay warm?" She playfully booped the tip of his nose with her fingertip, earning a blink. "You're sweet, but I would have at least liked to have changed before you saw me in this."

Her hand swept downward in reference to her nightwear but he deftly caught it and pressed his lips against the pulse point in her wrist, stating that it didn't matter to him what she wore and that she was always beautiful to him. She made to cover herself with the blanket that rested along the backing of the chaise but he deterred her with a soft smile. "Do not hide, Tea, it would be a shame for a beauty such as yours to be hidden away." Atem's lips lifted into a satisfied smirk when her face tinted red before she bashfully hid it within the blanket. His eyes carefully examined her wrists as the sleeves of her nightgown rode up slightly, revealing the marks from her previous life, and felt a lump form in his throat when he noticed that they had grown red. A quick glance towards her ankles confirmed that they too were reddened. Worry wormed within his chest as she sat up, the words she was speaking not reaching his ears as he spotted the thinnest of lines around her slender neck.

Heat exploded across her body as he rose, his upper body hovering over her own as his hand gently tilted her head back. She instinctively leaned backward as he came even closer and felt her breath hitch as the fabric of the chaise met her back. Shyness overcame her as his darkened amethyst eyes remained locked on something she couldn't see but could feel his gaze tracing her skin as if he were using a feather. The dull pounding in her ears suddenly grew deafening when she felt the cushion sink slightly under the weight of his knee and it felt as though her fluttering heart would explode as his warm breath tickled the sensitive skin of her neck. Somehow their hands found each other, their fingers entwining somewhere above her head, and she relished the feeling of his warmth as their closeness began to spread a pleasant bliss through her body. The blush blooming across her cheeks was closely followed by the slow close of her eyelids, her teeth catching upon her bottom lip to withhold the softest of gasps as his free fingertips brushed her sensitive skin.

"I thought we agreed that you would wake me up before you left in the mornings…" Yugi froze as his innocent eyes widened, voice dying as he spotted the pair. He had woken to find his adoptive brother missing and had ensured that his grandfather was settled before hurrying to the place he knew his doppelgänger would be. He had even been careful enough to walk quietly as he entered and shed his coat but had been excited upon hearing his closest friend's voice, signaling that she was awake, that he didn't even think to announce himself before entering the parlor. Lilac eyes narrowed at first in anger, thinking the worst was occurring, but it was quickly replaced with horror when he found himself under Tea's blazing gaze as she removed herself from Atem with a shriek and crossed the room within the blink of an eye, her face redder than he had ever seen it. Against his better judgement, his eyes attempted to look anywhere but her own as she made to slip past and felt his stomach drop when her figure brushed against his own, drawing his attention to the lack of clothing that she wore. "S-sorry, Tea!" He called as she caught sight of where his gaze was, her arms protectively wrapping around herself as she hurried down the hall and causing the house to quake slightly as she slammed the bedroom door shut.

The former pharaoh inhaled deeply through his nose, dragging a hand down his face as Yugi sputtered apologies and offered to come back later. "Do not worry yourself," he sighed, gaze rising to the ceiling as he cursed himself internally. He had been so caught up in his inner thoughts that he hadn't even noticed what he was doing. She had moved away from him so quickly that he hadn't been given the opportunity to gauge if she held anger towards him for his behavior. Intimacy was something completely foreign to him, though it had taken no time at all for him to become accustomed to Tea's physical affections such as when she would grasp his hand or place small kisses upon his brow. The thought of her slender fingers drifting upwards towards his sensitive scalp to run through his hair caused a shiver to pass own his spine and he quickly shook the thought away as he made room for Yugi to sit next to him. Atem made the mental note to formally apologize to Tea when she returned, the heat of their closeness fading away and leaving him slightly cold as his eyes met lilac. "I did not wish to wake you when you were sleeping so soundly, Yugi, forgive me. It appears that there are a great many things that I have yet to learn, and I can only hope that I learn them quickly so as not to be a bother to you or Tea."

Yugi could practically feel the confusion radiating off him as their gazes met. He had seen a few occasions in the last week of how Atem would hesitate slightly when reciprocating her affections, as though he had never experienced what they had before. "I was the one who should have been more careful. I didn't mean to interrupt your little moment." His lilac eyes drifted down to Atem's left hand, noting the almost tattoo-like infinity band. The letters that Tea had sent him were a bit confusing, especially when there was mention of Horus and Anubis or the reincarnation cycle that she had been caught in. "I'm sorry but can you tell me what exactly happened, you know, that brought you and Tea together? I'm afraid I don't' fully understand how all that happened."

. . . .

Tea leaned against the door as she struggled to control her breathing despite the thunderous pounding of the heart in her chest. She had always viewed herself as someone made of stone, someone that would be able to withstand the worst of life and survive without a scratch. A hearty conviction, strong will, and thick skin have served her well her whole life. All the empty threats the coward of a man she was been born to had daily shouted at her were the cause of any of her qualities but never had she thought of herself in the same group as the other women and girls of town. They all wore fancy dresses and paint on their lips, which they could have never afforded so she made do with that fact, but the way they held themselves or portrayed their femininity with blushes and delicate word choices was polar opposite to how she was. That was mostly the reason why she had found refuge with Yugi and the two bellmen, Tristan and Joseph, she was able to be herself without having to worry about appearances. It was different with Atem though, a good different. With him she felt strong yet frail at the same time; he supported her in every way, strengthening her dreams and hopes in ways that was nearly mind boggling. There were times though when she felt as though his smiles and gentle tone would cause her outer defenses to crumble into dust, leaving her defenseless and vulnerable. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing if it were just them but whenever someone happened upon their rare moments together and witness her equally rare delicate state, the idea alone filled her with confusing shame, as if she only wanted to appear that way to him alone. Her gaze shifted to the infinity band around her ring finger as the conflicting emotions in her chest threatened to gather into moisture droplets along her eyelashes.

It had given her a strange form of comfort during these yew years. It reminded her that true love was more than a legend but it also served as a constant reminder that it didn't rightfully belong to her. That honor rested with her previous incarnation, the dancer girl. She hated to admit that she envied the pair whenever a memory would return on its own to her. Tea always had the sneaking suspicion that she could lock them away but she allowed them to surface and resolved to reliving them. The story of the pharaoh and his beloved needed to be known, providing inspiration to her dances ever since she had pursued her dream of dancing. Despite the pain she always felt when a memory would present itself Tea would use every ounce of her strength to withstand.

Their reunion had been surprising and nothing short than a miracle. She had honestly come to terms with the sorrow that had grown in her heart during the last few years so stumbling upon him within those ruins back in Cairo practically ripped the scab that had formed over her wounded heart. At first she thought it was a cruel trick by a greater power or suspected that there was some sort of catch, a price that had to have been paid somewhere in the balance of things, the true reason behind why she had slept little since then in fear that she would have to pay. Perhaps she was fearing the worst though and attempted to swallow the lump that still lingered within her throat as she slipped the nightwear from her figure.

. . . .

Yugi listened intently to each word Atem spoke, his lilac eyes carefully observing the former pharaoh's features. The sorrow and anger that appeared within the planes of his regal features or darkened amethysts that were his eyes were genuine so the young Mutou held no doubt that the truth was being told. "You truly cared for her, the dancer who was owned by Bakura, but something is bothering me. The bond you shared sounds similar to the one Tea and I share yet it had tied you to each other across time. I'm not trying to be a downer when I say this so please don't take it the wrong way when I ask if you are sure that the feelings Tea have are fully her own and not the echoes from her previous life?" He wanted to immediately take back his words the second they had slipped through his lips but the questions that were plaguing him needed to be answered. "I'm sorry, but I have known Tea all of our lives. Never once have I seen her act the way she does with you and I can't remember a time when she had shown interest in any of the men of town either. There were plenty that were drawn in by her appearance, I don't have to point out how beautiful she is, but she never gave them the time of day. It just feels a bit off that she would suddenly be so attached to someone and then nearly shattered when the dust settled."

Amethyst eyes widened. His last memory before waking in the desert and being discovered by the Ishtars was of the cyclone within the church after Bakura had been engulfed by Anubis himself. Hearing Yugi's words caused his heart to freeze, the image of what he had witness this morning replaying in his mind. "What do you mean by shattered?"

"I found her in the church rubble looking as though death itself had passed over her." Yugi's eyes fell to the carpet. "I have never seen her so broken, so fragile, as if she was going to fall apart by the smallest breeze. She was so exhausted that she stayed locked within this horrible house, which looked nothing like this at the time, and spent most of her time sleeping. It was so painful for me to see her in that disheartened state. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a little hard to accept something that sounds so much like a fairytale."

"Your curiosity and honesty are testimonials to how deeply your truly care for Tea, Yugi, I believe that it is never wrong to wish for understanding when one who is held so dear is affected." Atem felt a stuttering within his chest as the look of skepticism upon the young Mutou's softened slightly as he rose to his feet. The Millenium puzzle around his neck glittered subtly in the firelight as he added a log to the fire, his eyes slipping closed. "It is difficult to put what I feel into words. I am a reborn pharaoh from ancient times but in many ways I am nothing more than a man who is struggling to understand the whispers of his heart." Yugi's breath caught as the firelight flickering across Atem's features suddenly grew into a soft glow that outlined his figure, transforming the clothes he was wearing into the extravagant attire that he had seen within several old paintings that were befitting the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, as he bowed his head lowly. "A king I may have been, coveted by many for my wealth or power, but I had felt more lowly than a beggar. What good are materialistic things if they cannot be used to protect what matters most? For a while it seemed that I was able to satisfy the loneliness within my heart by using every resource at my disposal for the good of Egypt. Every citizen's needs were cared for to the best of my ability, enabling Egypt to flourish and prosper, yet there always was a void that remained empty despite all of my attempts." Atem's amethyst eyes met Yugi's lilac and the young man was startled to find moisture gathering within the pharaoh's eyes. "I cannot speak for Tea's feelings but I assure you that mine are genuine. Her lighting that fireplace answered the wish of my heart that remains today. In ancient times I had been saved by her previous incarnation from the pressures of becoming pharaoh and ensuring my kingdom's safety from all who threatened the peace my father had struggled for. I will forever hold her dear to my heart but knowing that Tea is she was not the reason why I still remain by her side. They are their own persons, Yugi, their hearts are their own. Perhaps we were tied together by fate but that does not mean that we are obligated to one another. I would not hesitate to remove myself if Tea were to decide her heart lay elsewhere, despite how my heart would surely break." The spell that had caused his clothing to change dissipated as he stood and faced the young man who had remained transfixed. "But until that day, I vow that I will not part from her side."

A chill passed through the air as the fire suddenly vanished, plunging them into near darkness. The sun was beginning to peek over the horizon so at least there was some light but it was not near enough to see each other fully as they met in the center of the room before the shorter carefully began to make his way towards the west wall of the parlor. Yugi's finger flipped the switches that were the electric lights, which Kaiba had installed along with the new renovations, and found that they were unresponsive. Tea's home had been one of the last in town to receive the modern upgrades so that meant that there was a fuse box somewhere. "That's weird though, I didn't hear anything trip so why is the power out?"

Atem's instincts flared as a shadow within the room shifted, drawing his attention to the far side where Yugi was walking. His eyes struggled to focus on the spot and it always seemed that something would move within his peripheral vision then disappear when he attempted to hone on it. "Yugi, wait!" Pain seared up his leg as something sharp pierced his skin, his gaze searching the darkness as it began to make its way up his body.

"Pharaoh!" Yugi's eyes wide spotted his shadow grow smaller and he moved in time to grasp onto Atem's had that searched for something to hold. Panic filled him when a sharp yell came from the man he was clinging to and felt something give a pull. Something was attempting to pull him down into the floor! Their ears rang with as a shriek filled the air, causing them to grimace as the horrible sound raked across their beings in ways that reminded each of something scratching against glass. Desperation filled him as a cry fell from the pharaoh's lips and tightened his hold as another pull came. A flash of gold that nearly blinded them both caused the strange sound to rise in pitch and they tumbled to the ground as the unseen force released its hold. "What in the world was that?!" His wide eyes shot around the room as the electric lights flickered to life but they quickly refocused on the man next to him as he hissed lowly. "You okay?"

Amethyst eyes bore into into lilac as he stifled a groan, the pain in his leg throbbing as he fought to keep his breathing level. "I will live." Their eyes together traveled down to his leg and them both blinked in shock when they found an acid burn that should have affected the underlying skin of the now missing pant leg but showed tan skin that was normal. It made no sense, there was no mistaking the near blinding pain that had threatened to rob him of his consciousness so why was there no wound? His breath caught as a resounding heartbeat accompanied by a piercing pain to his chest caused his vision to swim, the room beginning to spin as a pressure built in his head. A hand impacted his back, forcing his body to jump start, and the air filled with his gasps as he attempted to regain his breath. He quickly used his sleeve to rid himself the sweat that had appeared across his brow when the sound of a door opening reached their ears and hurried to stand as footsteps followed. His eyes met Yugi's as her shadow fell across the floor, silently asking him to keep the event silent and between them solely, earning a nod just as she appeared in the doorway. The smallest spark of power slipped over his skin and traveled downward to where the missing fabric was, the smallest threads of gold attaching themselves to the the exposed fabric then dimmed dissipated to reveal the repaired cloth.

. . . .

Their motions stalled as Ishizu's eyes glazed over, her gaze fixated on something they couldn't see as she moved from the bed to stand before the open window. Marik kept close to her left while Odion on her right when her hands rested upon the window mantel for fear that an accident might occur. Her head tilted to the left then to the right as her necklace began emitting waves of light that caused rainbows to dance across the walls. It was as if something had snapped at her when she violently flinched backwards and would have fallen to the floor if it hadn't been for her brothers's quick reflexes. "The pharaoh's power is growing," a warped voice slipped from between her lips as they kept a firm yet gentle hold on her shoulders as she began to tremble. "It will once more return to its full strength, mirroring the mighty Ra's own, but beware the serpent who swallows the sun. The sands of time shall flow backward when the skies turn dark and shadows shall reign as the eighth wielder weeps."

They quickly moved her back to the bed as she lost consciousness, their gazes meeting as the glow of her necklace subsided. A yelp fell from Marik's lips as the rod in his hand seared with heat and caused his still healing skin to blister as his eye rolled. The mouth of a giant serpent opened before him, threatening to swallow him whole as its fangs closed in on him, but it fell back with a feral hiss as a figure appeared before him, the golden light of the Millenium puzzle revealing the pharaoh they had nursed back to health. Amethyst eyes pierced his soul when the mighty king glanced his way and startled as the room came back into view. Odion had placed him upon the bed next to Ishizu, who was sitting upright with her expression one of confusion. "Are you both alright?"

Ishizu's lapis eyes met Marik's periwinkle as their brows furrowed in unison. "There is no doubt that my necklace has shown me a vision. I do not fully understand its meaning though but perhaps if we combine our visions we may see a meaning. There is one thing that confuses me most…there are only seven items according to our ancient texts; the rod, the necklace, the ring, the key, the scales, the eye, and puzzle. There is only mention of these, so why did my vision cause me to mention an eighth?"

. . . .

Her breaths came in loud gasps as she slipped from her beloved's grasp, body trembling as she slipped within the washroom and secured the door. Kisara's reflection stared back at her with paled skin and wide eyes that held traces of the nightmare that had woken her. It has been several years since she had last had a dream as vivid as the one she had just woken from, leaving her drenched in a cold sheen of sweat and shaking like a leaf. She inhaled deeply as she rested against the door and slid to the tiled floor as she attempted to calm her hammering heart. A long tear slipped down her cheek as she heard his voice call her name from the other side of the door. It felt as though they had just begun their lives together, so why had she dreamt that she should value and treasure the time they spent together even more than she already did?

See you next time!
