Maya's POV
I don't know where I'm walking to, I just know I had to get out of there. The warm tears coat my face and meet the cold breeze from the wintery air. I sniffle, trying to keep the snot in my nose as I wrap my arms around my body to keep in the warmth. I shouldn't have come out here without a proper jacket, but it's too late to turn back now.
I keep walking until I find a bench that's not covered by the snow, I take a seat a look over to see the lodge in the distance, a tiny speck on this big mountain. I didn't know I walked that far. I can see kids laughing as they sled around and enjoy snowball fights. I remember innocence like that, it feels so far away now though.
I bring my knees to my chest in an attempt to keep more warmth, it works for a short while but before I know it I'm shivering. It's okay Maya, you're not cold. I try to distract myself from the cold but my mind keeps roaming to the memory of Riley and Lucas. I don't want to think of them right now, I know they're happy-and I don't deserve to be.
The cold begins to feel more and more inviting and soon I don't feel cold at all. I release the grip on my knees and let my feet crush the snow white snow beneath them. I lay back into the bench and close my eyes, taking a deep breath of the thin air. I can hear the silence of snow, the laughter of children, and the wisps of cold breeze as it passes by me. I feel sleepy. I try to make my body get up to find its way back to the lodge, but it feels heavy, and a lot more comfortable staying right where it is. My blinks become slower as I can feel my eyelids struggling to stay open, before I fade away into slumber I feel a pair arms under my knees and around the small of my back. I can suddenly feel the warmth from them and it makes me start shivering all over again.
"Maya.." I hear the voice trail off until my vision fades black and I fall into a slumber.
