Series 2, Episode 50 ~ House of Warnings
It was obvious to Camilla that a good night sleep was something she would never have under the roof of Anubis house. At least not anymore.
Amber's scream pierced through her dreams, shattering them within an instance. Though that didn't matter, nothing mattered because Amber was in danger. Or she possibly could be in danger and to Camilla that meant more to her than anything.
So, she was out her bed within seconds of hearing that scream to see Amber touching her face as she sat up in bed, Nina racing over to the girl's bed also looking worried but not at all unsurprised to hear the girl screaming. Which meant one thing; Nina had been communicating with the spirit again during her dreams and the spirit had used Amber as an example dragging Amber into the dream also.
The spirit seemed cautious of Camilla and didn't pull her into dreams as much anymore, in fact, the only reason Camilla saw the tears of gold dream with Nina was because Isis wanted her to see it – or so the girl assumed.
As much as she enjoyed the protection her Deity gave her from the spirit it did a fat lot of good for her when Nina kept provoking the spirit within her dreams and Camilla could do nothing to help or stop her.
"Mirror! Mirror! Mirror!" Amber's demand brought Camilla back to reality which was figuring out what Nina had done in her dream to cause Amber to scream.
Nina rushed to Amber's vanity as Amber grabbed Camilla's hand in a comforting way, grabbing the hand mirror from Nina and inspecting her face. The spirit must have shown Nina Amber in the worst state of ageing in the dream that's why the two girls were worried so much.
"Okay, we can breathe." Amber spoke as she examined herself. "breathe, breathe..."
The three girls sighed with relief as they all realised it was just a dream, and Amber was still her normal beautiful self now rocking some silver streaks – or that's how Camilla had talked her into thinking the look wasn't as bad as it was.
"that felt so real," Amber spoke up looking between her friends in worry, "I was old. Like, old-old." She informed Camilla with a worried look on her face. "it's not going to get like that, is it, Nina?" She asked, her hand giving Camilla's a squeeze in worry which Camilla squeezed it back trying to comfort the girl as she too looked to Nina.
"no Amber," Nina reassured her, "it's not."
"I can't grow old before I grow up." The sentence left Amber's mouth with a heart-breaking sob as the realisation of the situation she found herself in dawned on the blonde. "Cam, what's going to happen?"
"I'm going to fix this," Nina told the pair as Camilla moved closer to Amber on the bed and put an arm around her. Amber leaning into her friend needing the comfort.
"How are you going to fix this Nina?" Camilla asked her friend, "you got us into the mess by getting angry and defying the spirit, I hope you have some magical plan you haven't shared on how to fix this." The words where harsh but even Amber didn't have the heart to tell Camilla off because she agreed with the harsh truth. They were fine, maybe they were working a little slower than the spirit wanted but come on they still had school. Then Nina's anger got the better of her now they were cursed, as much as she loved the American girl Amber wasn't too happy with her at the moment.
Nina looked at the pair and bit her lip guilt washing over her like a bucket of ice water, knowing even without the curse that was forcing the truth from her lips, the harsh words from Camilla was true. This was her fault and she had to fix it, and soon.
If Anubis breakfast were chaotic before, having 5 members of the house cursed with 4 members unaware of said curses, made the mornings even more chaotic.
Camilla was on Alfie duty that morning and the boy couldn't help but grin as she presented him Mummy pancakes, where the bandages were lines of skoosh cream, with eyes poking out with strawberries. The pairs favourite that his dad used to always make them during the summer holidays when they were younger. "it's been a while but I think I still have a knack for these, not as good as Papa Lewis but no ones will ever be," Camilla told him with a smile as she passed her brother who was examining Amber's hair on the way back to her seat.
"these are awesome!" Alfie told her as he grabbed his glass and tried to grab the green straw Patricia had put into it to help him drink his juice easier. Small things but it made for an easier day, as they all remembered Alfie when they were 11 and if he had a lot of energy now that was only going to increase the 'younger' he got.
"There is defiantly whiter back here," Fabian told Amber who was looking at her face in her handheld mirror.
"I need a hat," Amber instantly spoke up, glancing to Camilla as after her Camilla was the most fashionable person in the house and could help her out, "or a wig."
"Or a head transplant." The childlike response from Alfie caused a smile to creep onto Camilla's face before she could stop it, though she knew it wasn't helpful at all and she probably should have been more worried at the rate Alfie was regressing back to his childhood days.
"just as soon as you get a personality transplant Alfie," Amber rolled her eyes dramatically at him though Alfie didn't seem offended as he let out a loud laugh at her sassy response.
Nina came rushing into the room causing all their heads to look her way, "Guys, I don't want anyone to panic but Victor's got an amulet."
Camilla was the only one not to look shocked at the news, it was like her body couldn't fake the reaction she knew was appropriate for the situation.
God this curse sucked!
Instead, she focused on her toast as Fabian sat down next to her looking as Nina took her place at the table too. "But how?" Amber asked the girl, "we have all six."
"maybe not," Nina spoke up her tone curious as if she had been working on a theory, "Patricia remember when you lost yours and took the spare one from the doll's house?" Patricia nodded her head at the girl's words, "what if it was a fake? What if Victor found it, had a copy of it made..."
"And swapped them and that's the one Patricia took down the tunnel," Amber finished for the girl, causing both twins to give them weirded out looks. Neither of them ever really witnessed the finish each other's sentences thing, seeing it was strange.
"dingh, dingh, dingh," Camilla mumbled under her breath in Arabic, knowing that if she had to speak the truth, she could at least hide it in her second language, "ladayna fayizin." (Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner).
The only two who heard the girl's comments were Patricia and Fabian who sat either side of her. Patricia shot the girl an odd look, hearing the foreign language come from her lips, whereas Fabian's eyes widened as he looked to his sister understanding what the implications of her sarcastic sentence meant. Camilla had known, though he wasn't sure how long for, that Victor had an amulet and didn't share it with the Sibuna's.
Camilla looked up at Fabian just in time to see his expression soften as he looked over Camilla. She hadn't meant to keep it a secret he could tell from the sad smile that crept onto her face; she had done it as a way to protect Victor he could only assume.
"Eh," Fabian looked around at the table, trying to remember what Amber was talking about with Patricia, "I'm guessing this wasn't a long time ago." He felt Camilla take his hand under the table and give it a small squeeze as a thank you for not outing her.
"Exactly," Nina agreed, "which means Victor must have seen everything that happened down there. Fabian, Cam, remember when you solved that last chemistry task."
"We did?" Fabian asked looking from Camilla to Nina.
"yeah..." Nina spoke as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, "well now I'm thinking maybe you didn't, what if Victor got to it first and then covered his tracks."
"This is bad," Amber spoke up slowly.
"Yeah, it's bad!" Nina sassily responded missing the look between the twins, "I knew there was something wrong with the tunnel door."
"Chill Nina." Camilla spoke up for the first time, holding her hand up to silence the girl, "I mean at least we got through to the next task." She told the girl choosing her words carefully, "You all suddenly put all this pressure onto me to do that task so be glad we even managed it. You all seem to think I'm like NEWT level Hogwarts when I'm barely scraping 3rd year Hogwarts at the moment. Lower your magic expectations from me, I got these powers a year ago, in case you had all forgotten." Nina's expression soured as Camilla spoke, she may have wished for the girl to tell the truth but boy she was learning the truth hurt.
Fabian let out a soft chuckle at his sister's rant, "so what are we going to do now? We need to stop him."
"Yeah, or Nina and the rest of us are history," Amber added with a nod of her head as she agreed with Fabian.
Alfie, of course, had missed the tension and had gotten bored of all the talking deciding a better use of his time was to blow bubbles into his juice.
"Alfie," Nina spoke sharply, more so than she probably intended, "what are you doing?" Alfie looked at her innocently, "don't you care about any of this?! And stop playing with your juice!"
"I'm going to tell my mum on you!" Alfie cried out upset, "your mean and your smell and I just don't like you anymore!" with that Alfie jumped up from the table and ran over to the couch.
"Oh well done Nim, just what we need right now." Camilla groaned getting to her feet and rushing over to where a sulking Alfie was sat. Settling down on the coffee table, and folding a bit of paper into an origami butterfly casually as she listened into the rest of the Sibuna's conversation.
"So, Patricia can't speak, Fabian's been losing his memory, Camilla has to only tell the truth, and Alfie is de-ageing." Amber listed off trying to remain calm, "why do I get the worst hex? I could be like thirty by dinner?!" Amber's eyes widened at the thought of it and a small, "eww" left her mouth.
"Okay, listen up guys," Nina spoke up trying to keep calm, "everything's going to be fine. We just need to think of a way to get the amulet off Victor. Any ideas?"
"Eh..." Nina's eyes shut in annoyance as Camilla pipped up from where she sat with Alfie, "don't you think the task should be the main focus, seeing as passing it means uncursing us?!"
"Amulet off who?" Fabian asked Nina with a confused look as Patricia tried to talk looking between Nina and Camilla.
"Is that a worry line?" Amber asked pulling her mirror back to her face quickly. "Please no."
"This is impossible," Nina spoke up putting her head in her hands as she watched Camilla place the paper butterfly into Alfie's hands, covering it with her own. There was a soft glowing light and when she lifted her hands the paper butterfly flapped its wings and shot off into the sky causing a childlike laugh from Alfie.
Unknown to Camilla, Alfie had accidentally spoken to Amber about her little breakdown the day before and she had decided to do something subtle about it. Watching Jerome and Alfie wander into the study hall she watched her best friend who was lying across a couch throwing balls off paper at Eddie's head as he tried to hurriedly do his homework for their Math's class, the blonde had a curious look in her eye that normally would have Camilla scared if she knew she was on the receiving end of it.
Two girls from across the hall waved at the boys flirtatiously causing Jerome to wave back a smirk on his face, missing the eye roll and the sour expression from Camilla as she saw the interaction. The downside of a truth hex was the emotions she was ever so good at hiding were now coming to the surface that included jealousy. Amber was happy to see it because boy had the Jamilla fan club been waiting for some physical signs of actual feelings for a very long time (the badges were made thanks to Evan and Poppy – who knew it annoy both parties people had them, though Amber felt something bigger was needed like jackets or something. She had designs that were being worked on). They weren't like Peddie who were both so hot-headed it was clear they'd figure it out themselves, these two were sly and always 3 steps ahead of everyone else, they guarded their hearts carefully which made the matchmaking business very very hard especially when everyone around them could see they were simply a match utterly made in heaven for one another.
Sometimes Amber just wanted to go up to them both and shout at them to open their eyes to what was in front of them, the utter unabashed love they could have with one another, happiness wasn't as hard as the two were making it for themselves.
"see Alfie," Jerome spoke trying not to give his best friend a confused look as he wildly waved at the whole room not at the two girls who were trying to flirt. "our status as school champions has defiantly impressed the ladies. I did not see that coming."
Amber didn't bother to hide her smile as Camilla scoffed, the girl looking over at her blonde friend and closing her eyes in defeat as she realised, she had been caught in her little act of jealousy.
"uhhh girls germs, icky!" Alfie loudly spoke shuddering before running over to Camilla and sitting down cross-legged next to her, smiling as she produced a colouring book and pencils from him from her bag. The boy happily settling down to colour in. some girls might by icky but Camilla wasn't one, as his best friend she had always been that exception even when they were younger. She was Camilla. It was as simple as that.
"Jerome hi," Amber's voice caused Camilla's head to whip around in her friend's direction across the room in alarm.
"Hello," Jerome spoke knowing the tone of Amber's voice as well as anyone else in Anubis house and knew Miss Millington wanted to talk to him.
Amber took a seat on one of the armchairs and waited as Jerome cautiously sat down in the twin chair. When Amber wanted to talk to you sometimes it was easier to just accept your fate and get it over with, though Amber was very aware of the girl across the room listening into their every word which just made the whole thing that much more fun for her.
"So, partner..." Jerome spoke as he settled himself down in the chair, "I guess me and you are now the new, eh, power couple of the school." Even to Jerome, the words sounded weird and Camilla could tell from the way his eyebrows scrunched together.
"I know, logically we should be dating." Amber spoke up causing them both to pulls disgusted faces at the thought, "but in this case, we aren't going to follow logic I have other plans for you."
"other plans?"
Amber sent Jerome an all-knowing smile, "you aren't ready yet, but when you are the plans will come together. I'm love guru Millington, after fashion it's just what I'm good at."
Camilla was distracted as Fabian sat down next to her unceremoniously causing her attention to divert from Amber and Jerome to Fabian and Nina. "I honestly wish I could remember more about the tasks," Fabian said to Nina, smiling slightly as Alfie held up his colouring book to the pair to show them the purple tiger he was working on. "Why are we doing them?" he asked the two girls most important to him.
Nina glanced to Camilla who made a gestured that she could explain, as she leaned her head on Fabian's shoulder as she watched Alfie. "to find the mask, to give it to Senkhara and rid ourselves of this curse once and for all."
"you make it sound so easy when you say it like that," Camilla joked causing a smile to creep onto Nina's face. In that simple list, it did sound easy, however, the reality was things were never as easy as they appeared. If the task for the cup the year before had taught Sibuna anything there was always something more to the story than what they knew.
"And Senkhara is the Egyptian spirit?" Fabian asked slowly, smiling as he got nods from the girls. "I remembered!" he excitedly spoke up.
"You still remember me, right?" Nina asked softly.
Fabian looked at her as if shocked she would ever ask something like that. There were two people in this world he could never forget. One was Nina, his first love (not that she knew that) and his best friend. The second was Camilla – mainly because he knew his twin would never let him forget who she was. "of course, I do." He told her comfortingly, being rewarded with a smile from the girl sat in front of him.
"So, who am I?"
"your Nina Martin," he told her confidently, taking her hand and giving it a tight squeeze, "my best friend." Both twins heard the words of 'and first love' in the boy's pause and Camilla knew if they were in school, and she wasn't using her brother as a lean he might have told her that much at that moment. However, school was a massive bitch and she was highly emotional because of the truth hex and needed a lean so sorry Fabiana she was more than happy to take the moment off them.
"and that's Mr Sweet," Fabian spoke up pointing to the door, causing Camilla to sit up and look around at the door as Mr Sweet and a woman she had never seen before walked in. the woman was on the shorter side, and her bright clothes complimented her dark skin in a way that made her glow warmth, which only was added too as she looked around the room with a bright smile. Whoever this woman was Camilla immediately liked her. "and... I don't know who the other one is." Fabian whispered to the girls in a very worried tone.
"it's okay," Nina whispered back as Mr Sweet asked for their attention, "Me neither."
"I'd like to introduce you to, Ms Valentine!" he said with a bright smile, the new teacher waving slightly at the class at her introduction. "she'll be taking over from Mrs Andrews."
"Wow, it's like Megan Fox taking over for Marge Simpson," Jerome whispered but Camilla was close enough that she heard his comment.
"What is your deal with crushing on teachers Jerome, it's creepy!" she whispered back before she could stop herself, causing Amber to let out a laugh at the girl's words seeing the jealous look in Camilla's eye again, "Plus, you don't stand a chance in hell!" she added before looking back to the front of the class as the new teacher started talking, leaving a very perplexed Jerome looking at her oddly, wondering where her outburst came from and why.
"So, I'll leave you in her capable hands," Mr Sweet said with a smile to the students before leaving the study hall.
"ah, thank you, Mr Sweet," Ms Valentine smiled at the man as he left before she took in the class in front of her, "hey, I feel like I know most of you already." She told them jokingly as she pulled her bag off and causally placed it in the one chair not being used by students. "thanks to Mick." The use of their old Anubis housemate caused a few very different reactions around the room, Amber laughing at the different ones between the current couple she was matchmaking. Jerome sitting up jealousy flaring at the boy's name, whereas Camilla seemed almost happy to hear it as if the boy would come and whisk away Mara to Australia leaving Jerome to her – well maybe that was Amber's hopeful thinking into seeing Camilla sit up and smile at the name.
"Mick?" Joy asked the question they were all thinking.
"oh, on my last job in Australia," Ms Valentine explained as she sat down on the arm of the chair her bag was in, "I taught Mick there. He told me so much about this place, and when they advertised for a job I just had to apply." She then looked around the room, "shall we start with a little ice breaker?"
This is how they all found themselves stood around the room holding a ball throwing it to one another. "Amber," Nina threw the ball to Jerome who had just called her name.
"Alfie," Jerome said throwing it to Amber.
"Yay!" Alfie screamed getting ready to catch the ball.
"Patricia," Amber spoke without even thinking, throwing the ball to Alfie before pulling an apologetic face to Patricia as she remembered the girl's lack of voice.
"FABIAN!" Alfie screamed throwing the ball full force at Patricia.
Patricia pointed to Joy before she threw the ball at Fabian.
"You need to say their name," Ms Valentine explained to Patricia as she pointed at Joy.
"Eh, Pam..." Fabian looking panicked before throwing the ball at Joy. From beside him, Camilla slunk down in her seat putting her hand over her mouth as she knew she would say something in this situation that would get her in trouble.
Joy looked at Fabian hurt as she caught the ball, "What?" she asked. Ignoring the shocked faces of everyone around them.
Fabian looked at her apologetically, before glancing to Camilla. Right now, the only memories he had that didn't seem to be fading slowly from his head were the ones that involved just him and Camilla. The ones with Camilla and groups were there too but everything was slowly dissolving away at different paces and he knew from the looks he had messed up but it was an honest mistake, he just wished he could correct it but the name just wasn't coming to him.
"I'm Joy." Joy said softly, her eyes welling up, as she threw the ball back at Fabian and left the room. Patricia pushing up from her seat and following her friend ignoring the teacher's shouts.
Camilla agreed to go see Nina's gran in the hospital with her because she had a few tonics in mind for the woman but she needed to know what the issue was so she could help. She trusted the hospital but they were dealing with magic that much was clear, no matter how much Nina rolled her eyes at the idea of it on the taxi over.
Also, part of that reason was because, if Nina saw Senkhara on the way back from the hospital Camilla could step in and stop her from cursing them even more. This comment when brought up wasn't appreciated by Nina either but Camilla felt she deserved that dig – just a little.
"GRAN!" Nina rushed into the room, Amber and Camilla on her heels as she saw her gran was sat up and reading. "You look so much better," she told the woman as she hugged her.
"Aww Nina darling," the woman happily hugged her granddaughter, letting her go to smile at Amber and Camilla warmly. Camilla instantly got to work listening in to the conversation as she did, her focus was on the windows of the room where she placed a line of crystals and a very subtle line of salt. It wouldn't do much to stop whatever the issue was, but it would stop something else coming in to add to Nina's gran's pain. "How are you dears?" Nina's gran asked, not bothering to ask Camilla about the crystals. After living with the girls for a week she had learned the female twin was a little on the odd side.
"I think I'm growing a bunion," Amber honestly told the woman.
"I'm not surprised with those heels," Nina's gran told her wisely looking down at the girl's feet. "you need a comfy pair of loafers." The word loafers caused the fashion girl Amber had been helping create in Camilla physically caused the girl to shudder at the word and she didn't feel ashamed of the dirty look she gave her blonde friend as she slipped on the woman's shoes.
"So did you get the test results back yet?" Camilla asked the woman as she looked her way, going back to why she came to the hospital with her friends.
"inconclusive." Nina's gran informed them with a roll of her eyes, "they want to keep me in for observation." This was more than enough evidence for Camilla anyway that whatever was going on with Nina's gran it was magic related.
"Is this designer?" Amber asked holding out the cardigan that had been put on the only chair in the room.
"Amber I'm sorry, future you will thank me for this," Camilla spoke, causing Nina to let out a chuckle as Camilla took the cardigan from their blonde friend and held it away from her so she couldn't wear it. Somethings, no matter how strange their life seemed, would never change with her friends and it was one of the many reasons why she loved them.
"did I really just consider that..." Amber spoke after a moment looking to Camilla with wide eyes.
"its no fun growing old." Nina's gran said with a sad smile as she watched their antics.
"do as I command!" a voice came from the doorway causing Camilla and Nina to look around but no one was there, "or your friends will suffer more." Nina looked to Camilla who gave her a confident smile. They could do this. They had to do this. There was no other option really.
That evening they decided to go down to the tunnels as a group. Patricia was avoiding Camilla's knowing smirk the best she could, glad no one had asked the girl yet why she was smiling. She and Eddie had had their first kiss and it was as epic as both had hoped, however, the only thing was because of her not being able to talk she couldn't really tell him how much she enjoyed it.
Now Camilla only knew because Eddie grabbed the girl as she arrived back at Anubis house with her roommates and demanded to talk to her. Needing a girl to decipher what the hell went on between himself and Patricia.
Alfie was playing with a toy car on the bannister when the girls crept down the stairs, Fabian was looking at the hallway in his own little bubble only looking around as the girls appeared.
"Okay..." Nina trailed off taking in the sight in front of them, "let's get this task done."
"Yeah, because let's face it, none of us are getting any younger," Amber spoke uplifting her hair to show them all her white streaks.
"Well accept Alby," Fabian joked getting worried looks from everyone but his sister who smiled at him.
"Who?" Amber asked.
"Alfie, Ambs, he meant Alfie," Camilla said as she moved forward and linked her arm in Fabian's.
Nina taking a deep breath as she put her hand to her temple, "let's just go before this gets any worse."
Nina moved past Fabian, Patricia and Amber following. Amber grabbing Alfie as she did leaving the twins at the back.
"Hal faealt shayyana khataan?" (did I do something wrong) Fabian asked his sister in Arabic as they followed behind the Sibuna's. Nina's reaction was one he didn't like.
Camilla instantly shook her head, "La. 'iinaha faqat nayna tataeamal mae suqut 'afealiha" (No. it's just Nina dealing with the fall out of her actions) she told him with a squeeze of his arm.
The task they had to complete looked even more daunting when they knew so much was riding on it. It didn't help that Amber had handed Alfie back his toy car in the hopes of getting him to shut up as his moaning about being dragged along was getting to them all.
"Alfie!" Nina shouted, "Alfie stop it!"
Alfie glanced to Camilla who held out her hand and he ran over to her grabbing it upset. He had never dealt well with being shouted at when he was younger and clearly that part of him had come back. "She's mean..." he whispered to Camilla.
"She's just stressed and worried," Camilla told him softly.
"Why?" he asked in an innocent childlike tone but before Camilla could respond Fabian spoke up and the two looked his way.
"Hey, look at this," Fabian pointed to Hathor playing the instruments in a hieroglyphic form on the wall.
"Yeah, we saw it last time we were down here," Nina told him.
"W-We did?" Fabian asked glancing to his sister, but she was dealing with Alfie so probably best to just accept the fact they did.
There were the sounds of rocks falling and Nina rushed to the entrance of the room, "what was that?"
"Talk about subtly old man..." Camilla muttered to herself as she and Alfie moved closer to the horns to examine them. It was clearly Victor and she knew it not that she was going to say anything unless directly asked.
"It must be a rat," Fabian told them all but there wasn't any confidence in his voice.
"We hope it's a rat." Amber bluntly spoke up crossing her arms, "I'll just add that to the list of things I am never going to say again after this mission is over."
"Okay, lets just focus," Nina told them all nervously.
During this time Camilla had let go of Alfie's hand and let him wander freely as his energy seemed to have lowered. "What are these?" he asked, poking one of the trumpets, "can I have a go?"
"Alfie no!" Nina shouted but she was too late. Alfie had already put his lips to one of the trumpets and blown into it. The sound was horrible but that wasn't what had them worried no. as Alfie blew the horn the ceiling above them started to crack and splinter as a loud booming noise filled their ears causing all the Sibuna's to cover their ears instantly looking around the room. Clearly, they only had so many attempts before it would fall in on top of them. This task was only getting harder and they were nowhere near closer to figuring out what to do to complete it.
