Series 2, Episode 51 ~ House of Status
"Alfie no!" Nina shouted but she was too late.
Alfie had already put his lips to one of the trumpets and blown into it.
The sound was horrible but that wasn't what had them worried no. As Alfie blew the horn the ceiling above them started to crack and splinter as a loud booming noise filled their ears causing all the Sibuna's to cover their ears instantly looking around the room. Clearly, they only had so many attempts before it would fall in on top of them.
"RUN!" Camilla screamed at her friends as they clutched at their ears, "RUN!"
No one needed to be told twice by the protector as they raced from the room instantly, Camilla waiting behind to make sure she was the last one to leave just in case something bad was to happen.
Thankfully nothing bad did happen but it was enough to spook them all into all but running back to bed.
A Sibuna meeting was called the next day, however, it couldn't be during breakfast so the Sibuna's ate in a hurry and rushed up to Nina, Amber and Camilla's room. Camilla laughing as Alfie ran in and dived onto her bed, grabbing her teddy and hugging it too him being extra careful with his head because he knew Camilla – like him – used her teddy to hide her secrets. It was something they had thought to do together one summer when they were at Lewis Manor.
"So," Nina started as Fabian and Alfie joined them in the room, smiling bemused at Alfie's antic's whilst Camilla sat down on the storage box at the end of her bed so she could keep an eye on him but also be apart of the conversation, "everyone's hearing back to normal this morning?" she asked looking around at the group.
"Speak up Nina," Amber told the girl from her vanity as she added the last touches to her makeup for the day, "and stop mumbling."
"that answers that question," Nina spoke smiling at the twins who both let out soft chuckles at Amber's response.
"Hey, Fabian!" Alfie sat up, looking at the boy from the end of his twin's bed, holding up two action figures he had brought upstairs with him, "do you want to play with me?" he asked pressing the button on the back of the army soldier causing him to make a war-cry sound.
"Alfie, you are not 9 years old." Nina scolded him, though her words were ignored as Camilla took one of the action figures from him and mock fought with him. "everyone can we please focus?!"
Camilla let out a loud dramatic sigh causing Nina to turn her way her jaw set knowing something was going to come from the twin's mouth that she wasn't going to appreciate, "God Nina no need to act all bitchy! He is cursed because of you!" Camilla told her gesturing to Alfie who had dropped his toy and had a sad puppy dog look on his face cuddling Camilla's teddy for comfort.
"Eh..." Fabian spoke up looking confused glancing to his sister for support but only seeing her annoyed look towards Nina, "focus on what?"
"the task Fabian!" Nina instantly responded in an exasperated tone, holding her hand up to Camilla as she heard the creak of wood meaning the girl had got up. She didn't need Camilla to remind her once again they were in this mess because of her. She knew that already. It didn't help with anything the small girl kept telling her it.
"Oh right..." Fabian spoke in a panicked tone. Camilla held her hand out to him as she saw him panic and Fabian instantly moved past Nina to take it. He knew he should know what Nina was talking about but he simply didn't. "I'm sorry," he told Nina with an apologetic half-smile, "the memory's getting worse." Camilla instantly reassuringly rubbed his arm as Fabian stood next to her, at least he had Camilla. She wasn't shouting at him; she was still in his memory.
She was still constant. She would always be a constant.
"I think it's pretty clear everyone is getting worse," Nina told the boy.
"wait, does this mean that because Fabian isn't 1oo% I'm our official Egyptian brain on hand? Oh isn't that bloody great." The words were out of Camilla's mouth before she could stop them and the look of disgust at the thought of showing how nerdy she could be on the topic she was brought up on, was a look that caused Patricia to grin. This was something she would never let the girl live down, once she had her voice again.
Nina wasn't stupid she didn't miss the amused look shared with the girls at Camilla's remark and honestly, she knew part of her reaction was frustration at the fact the task was getting harder because of a curse she put on all her friends. She just wished they would all focus so they could move onto the next task quicker. "Okay, we need to find a way to finish this task and lift the curse."
"it's got to be about knowing the melody, for the trumpets," Camilla pointed out causing Nina to nod her head in agreement.
"if only Sarah was here," Nina told her sounding panicked and frustrated, "I'm sure she would know."
Fabian glanced at Camilla who was looking sadly at Nina's distressed state, not completely understanding why or who this Sarah was that caused the American girl and his sister to be so sad all of a sudden. "who's Sarah?" Fabian asked.
The look Nina shot him instantly caused him to wish he had asked his sister privately in Arabic because Nina's sharp look with her sad eyes was one, he never wanted to ever see on the girls face ever again, "Sarah Fabian! Dollhouse Sarah!" Nina frantically screamed at him causing them all to jump at her raised tone of voice. Fabian even went to take a few steps back but the iron grip Camilla had on him prevented him from doing so. Nina glanced at Camilla after she shouted and saw the look on the small girl's face turn dangerous, her jaw tightened and her eyes narrowed in at the American almost daring her to keep talking, this look from Camilla caused Nina to take a calming breath, knowing she was out of line at that moment. The last thing she needed was Camilla to snap her fingers and curse her right back.
"I'm sorry," Nina apologised honestly to the boy, "Sorry. Its just..." before she could say anything more, she glanced to the dollhouse in question, her only connection to Sarah she felt she had left just to see it light up. An excited gasp left her mouth as she rushed over to it, "Thank you Sarah!" she muttered excitedly as she opened the dollhouse.
The Sibuna's looked at the dollhouse all the dolls were gathered around something in the living room.
"it's a music stand." Fabian pointed out; happy he could add something he actually had knowledge about to the conversation.
"wait..." Amber leaned forward with her tweezer's and gently picked up the sheet music from the small music stand, holding it out for the twins to take.
Fabian took the paper and he and Camilla glanced over it, "the Song of Hathor..." Fabian read the title off, before looking up at them all, "that's got to be it. That's got to be the name of the tune."
"Hathor the goddess of the sky, of women, and of fertility and love. The daughter of Ra," Camilla spoke up listing off the traits of the goddess on her fingers talking in a bored tone as if she was being forced to do homework or something, "the Greeks identified Hathor with their goddess Aphrodite."
This caused Amber to squeal as she pointed to Camilla, remembering their history project from the year before when she dressed as the goddess Aphrodite, "the goddess of love."
Camilla snapped her fingers excitedly as what Amber was hinting at clicked in Camilla's brain, "We are looking for a love song people,"
"Yes..." Nina seemed excited as she looked around at them all with a grin, "so how does the love song go?" she asked causing them all to look to the twins who both instantly shrugged. They might be the Egyptian brains of the group but even they didn't know everything.
"Morning all," Ms Valentine's bubbly attitude as she grinned at the class was refreshing as she walked into the history class before the Sibuna's, giving the group a smile as they rushed to their seats. She couldn't fault them for being late technically as the bell rang just as they walked into the room. "please tell me you did your homework on Cleopatra." She told the group.
Camilla rolled her eyes as she saw Jerome enthusiastically hold up his homework from the back of the class and she turned to the teacher, "Does a chapter we wrote in my parent's book on the subject count as homework, cos if so, Jerome totally copied from us." She said innocently smiling as she heard spluttering noises from the back of the room.
Ms Valentine took the jibe in her stride giving the pair smiles as she pointed to them, having finally sussed out who they were, "Yeah, I was told when it came to this subject you two would know a fair bit thanks to your dad or one of your aunts or uncles, anyway I was told to tell you that because of your key basic knowledge on the subject that I expect a more in-depth essay from you both," this caused Camilla to be the one who was a spluttering mess as she sat herself down in her chair.
"oh, miss!" Mara spoke up excitedly as the class laughed at the fact the twins managed to get themselves more homework in a subject Camilla had hoped to get none for, "you're the one who knows Mick, arent you?"
"Yeah, I taught him at my previous school." She told Mara with a smile, "we haven't met, I'm Ms Valentine." She told Mara.
"Mara Jeffrey," Mara replied with a smile, glad to meet the teacher the students who took drama (or were forced to take drama – Rutter's -) were talking about so glowingly the day before.
"Mara," Ms Valentine spoke in realisation as she put a name to the face, "at last, I have a message for you from Mick." She told the girl who looked surprised but sat up straighter in her seat, keen to hear from her boyfriend? Camilla honestly wasn't sure if Mick and Mara were still a thing. It be awkward if they were seeing how much time Mara was spending with Jerome but she wouldn't hate the news much to hear it if they were still dating honestly.
"teacher's grapevine," Joy laughed slightly causing a smile from Patricia, "only you Mara," even Mara couldn't help but laugh at the slight teasing because it was true, only she could have messages sent across the globe via teachers.
"Mick said to tell you," Ms Valentine spoke slowly as if trying to remember everything correctly, "he's doing really well in Australia."
"aww, how sweet."
"he talks about you all the time and there was another thing..." the teacher trailed off slightly.
"Does this guy ever quit ruining my life," Jerome mumbled, causing eye rolls from Amber and Camilla which he saw, causing him to look at them strangely.
"Mara is perfect for Mick," Amber explained simply to him in a whisper, "your girl is someone else, Jerome."
The boy pulled a face at her words, but something in the back of his mind told him not the dismiss the idea that perhaps Mara wasn't perfect for him. Maybe he was enjoying the chase of Mara too much.
"oh, he said he couldn't wait to introduce his girl from Australia."
Any second thoughts Jerome had about Mara not being right for him were wiped away as he realised Mick Campbell had fucked up big time with his message, breaking up with the nerdy girl then and there and now Mara was free to date.
"he's got an Australian girlfriend?" Mara said sounding heartbroken.
"Ms Valentine," Jasper's voice caused Camilla to look around to the front of the class a bright smile on her face as her uncle gave her and Fabian waves after placing down books on the teacher's desk. "those books you asked for."
"Aww thank you, Jasper. Rutter's, I hope you don't mind re-reading your family's work, but I must say it is the best on the current subject." The teacher laughed as she held up a book expecting the face Camilla pulled at seeing the cover, Fabian sending the teacher a weak smile.
"aw, guys don't look too upset." Jasper teased.
"Eh, I'm sure we have a great excuse not to be happy..." Fabian said turning to his sister before turning back to the front of the room, "but I've forgotten whatever that excuse is. Don't worry, it was brilliant."
"We are all very proud of them," Jasper told the teacher in a sarcastic voice, not missing the middle finger Camilla held up to him causing him to stick his tongue back at her causing the laughter to ripple around the room.
"So eh," Eddie leaned over to Patricia taking the opportunity of the laughter to talk to her, "how about me and you hang out after school tonight?"
"Ohhhh... I think she's washing her hair." Joy told the boy as Patricia mimed washing her hair as an excuse.
"Are you bailing on me?" Eddie asked the currently mute girl. "I have to ask, it's a new experience for me." This caused Joy and Camilla to laugh and Patricia sent him a sceptical look, the boy shooting them unhelpful looks as he knew they had all seen right through his 'smooth' lie.
"Okay," From the front of the room Ms Valentine called for the classes attention, "so for the benefit for you all a wee re-cap, nice look by the way Amber," this caused the girl with the shades and the hat to smile at her, "we are about to get down to the reign of Cleopatra."
"Miss do you know anything about ancient Egyptian love songs?" Amber asked bluntly causing all the Sibuna's to look at her with wide eyes.
"it's," Nina racked her brain to think up a lie to the weird specificness of the girl's question, "for the school concert."
"what school concert?" Joy asked Nina until Patricia kicked her to shut up and not ask questions.
"It's called..." Fabian stuttered trying hard to remember, "the song of ha..."
"Hathor." Nina and Camilla spoke together. Camilla watching as her brother's shoulders slumped in defeat, she could tell he was feeling useless.
"'ant taqum bieamal rayie" (You're doing great) she whispered to him in Arabic, watching as her uncle came back into the room, sending the twins a bemused look as he heard their whispers. He had never thought of Arabic of a way for them to talk privately as the whole family knew it that's why they had come up with their own code when they were younger, but he guessed at school it was a way for them to talk without anyone else knowing what they were discussing.
Fabian leaned back and glanced to his sister, "'ana edym alfayidat lak alan" (I'm useless to you now).
"'ant shakhs walays muhmisat khabza. lays ealayk 'an yakun ladayk aistikhdam" (You're a person, not a toaster. You don't have to have a use.) this blunt motivational comment from Camilla to her brother caused Jasper to let out a laugh, it was her father (his younger step-brother) in her coming out to play. Jonathan had always been a blunt straight forward person who's mouth sometimes ran ahead of his mind, which had caused him many an upset in the community but it was one of the things he loved in both his brother and niece. The man's laugh at the front of the room causing eyes to fall on him from the students, the twins looking round at him wide-eyed as they had forgotten he could understand what they were saying too.
Seeing as he had their attention he decided to answer the question his nephew's future wife (or so he was told Nina would be by both Amber and Camilla every time they came to the library) had asked the teacher, "I've heard of the song of Hathor," he told the girl with a bright smile, "I mean it's one of the key compositions of ancient Egyptian music. My dad specialised in the subject," he added to Ms Valentine with an excited smile. Camilla looked at her uncle in interest, she never knew her Pops Choudhary (not her real grandparent but her grandma and him had remained close even after their breakup so he was pretty much a third grandparent to her) had specialised in Egyptian music. It explained why he kept buying them instruments for their birthday and Christmas and got excited when Fabian learned the guitar.
"cool!" an excited Alfie came from the back of the room, "how does it go?!"
"Ah, well nobody knows," Jasper told the boy.
"W-what do you mean, nobody knows, like nobody at all?" Camilla asked her uncle confused. If they knew of the song, knew its name, then they must have heard it right?
"Well if it's Ancient Egyptian it will pre-date musical notation," Ms Valentine explained, "isn't that right, Jasper?" she asked double-checking.
"Indeed," he nodded his head at her, "the song of Hathor is now lost to history. Nobody alive today has ever heard it." This caused the Sibuna's to look to one another in worry, it was one step forward and 3 steps back for them. Like normal.
Nina was distraught as they left the history classroom. Jasper's news about the fact no living person had ever heard the song of Hathor had clearly been weighing on her mind throughout the entirety of the class.
"How are we supposed to play a song that no one has ever even heard?!" She asked, causing Amber to raise her eyebrows dramatically at the twins who were walking arm in arm. The two felt their curses lessoned when together and were all for that at the moment so were more than happy to be strangely twin connected at that moment.
"she didn't say when it was lost to history," Amber told Nina as they watched the girl open her locker and switch out the books.
"Wait -" Camilla turned to Amber curiously, Fabian doing the same.
" - What do you mean by that?" he asked finishing Camilla's sentence for her.
"Well, it obviously wasn't lost when Frobisher-Smythe's time, because he couldn't have used it to set the task," Amber explained to the pair as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
"yeah..." Fabian said looking to Camilla who was looking as amazed at Amber as he was.
"When did you get so wise?" Nina asked the blonde.
Amber let out a dramatic sigh, "I think its an age thing." She told them honestly, "yuck."
As they all laughed at her distress of being wise Mr Sweet came bustling over with a wide smile on his face, Joy trailing behind him, "Miss Millington, could we borrow you for a second?" he asked.
Nina instantly grabbed Amber and pulled her down the hall, the twins on their heels, "eh, I'm a teensy bit busy right now." She told him, but that didn't stop the pair following behind the four.
"its to star in a new online ad for the school," Joy called out to her, causing Amber to stop in her tracks and turn around to face them with a bright smile.
"where do you want me?" she asked.
"Is this a good idea Amber?" Nina hissed as she rushed after the girl who was walking back down the corridor to Mr Sweet at a shocking pace for the heeled shoes she had on.
"I couldn't possibly turn down a staring role," Amber told the girl as if it was obvious, "Joy and Mr Sweet have recognised my talents and singled me out for this."
"Actually your name came up first in alphabetical – " Joy started but was interrupted by the blonde.
"-Can we discuss my character motivation before..."
Joy handed her the script with a smile, "Just learn your lines." She told the girl.
"Rutter's can you be present too?" Mr Sweet asked them with a kind smile, "I'll see you tomorrow first thing in the library." With that Joy and Mr Sweet turned and left whispering about camera angles and other things.
Fabian and Nina stepped in front of Amber and Camilla who had let go of her brother to look over the script Joy had handed Amber, seemingly just as excited as the blonde for the advert.
"Amber." Fabian hissed to the girls, "have you forgotten something?"
"running the project past my agent?" Amber asked.
"not having enough time to hire the appropriate hair, makeup and wardrobe team?" Camilla also asked, trying to figure out why the two were so angry about such an amazing opportunity.
"Eh, grey hair and worry lines!" Nina pointed out, "don't you think people are going to notice?"
Before either of the pair could argue their point to Nina, Alfie came stumbling from the classroom hugging his arms around him grunting in pain. Camilla pushed past Nina and rushed over to her friend, who was more than happy to hold onto her arm as she looked over him worried. "what's happening Alf?" she asked.
"I don't know," he sounded so scared and Camilla could see the tears in his eyes as he hissed in pain once again, "it feels like growing pains but it..."
"Come on..." Camilla whispered, pulling him to her and kindly leaning him down the hall, the Sibuna's on their heels.
Camilla was pacing with worry about Alfie in a classroom, a bad habit both twins had they knew.
"Cam..." Amber's tone was worrisome as Camilla glanced to her friend who was sat on her laptop at her desk, Nina and Fabian where settling Alfie down in his chair at the back of the room, "promise me you won't go on the school profiles pages for a bit."
"what?"
"Just promise me."
Camilla walked over to her friends, "what do you –" she grabbed the laptop as Amber tried to move it away resulting in the screen to bend back and reveal a picture. A picture of Jerome and Mara in a very couplie picture. "I need to be anywhere but here..." she whispered painfully, it felt as if someone was slowly squeezing her heart.
As she turned to leave Nina, turned around and started talking, so she couldn't escape, so instead, she turned and wandered over to the other side of the room hoping she wouldn't be asked anything by anyone as right now she didn't know if she could go spilling the biggest secret of them all. Her feelings about Jerome.
Nina let out a sigh as she looked over them all, Amber quickly shutting the laptop and going back to her makeup – the girl seemed to be trying to fight the ageing with make-up. "Amber, I really think you should drop out of the ad," Nina told the girl.
"Are you serious?" Amber irritably replied, "this could be my big break, my one shot at stardom."
"Yeah... but if people start to realise what's happening to you..." Nina argued.
"Guys..." Alfie murmured causing the twins to look around at him as he started to wriggle around in pain, Nina ignoring him to keep arguing with Amber.
"People will start to ask questions that we can't answer."
"So, I have to choose between personal fame or a horrible fate for my best friends." Amber dramatically spoke. "Sad times. Never underestimate the power of makeup and forgiving lighting." Amber told Nina wisely. "look at Bart Simpson, he's been on TV for years and he still looks 12 years old."
Fabian let out a laugh as he looked up from the little notebook he had. It was his field notebook from digs but he felt it would come in handy to start writing things down if his memory kept going the way it was. "he's a cartoon Amber," he told the girl who shot him an exasperated look as he wasn't helping her point at all.
"How do I look?" she asked, glancing between Nina and Camilla. Noting Camilla was wiping at her face slightly.
Before either girl could respond Joy walked into the classroom and Amber quickly put her sunglasses back on. "I hope you're not planning on rocking that look for the shoot." Joy told the girl.
"what's wrong with my look?" Amber demanded.
"nothing." Joy said almost too quickly, "I love retro glamour... it's just, this is a school not a country club fundraiser."
Camilla turned around as she heard a thud, seeing Alfie fall from his seat and her eyes widened as she realised why.
"What was that?" Joy asked.
Camilla rushed to her friend, but Alfie wasn't their Alfie anymore. She was looking at Alfie when he was 4 or 5, she had seen many many pictures of Alfie that age hung around Lewis Manor. This curse had just taken everything to the next level.
"Alfie..." Camilla whispered as the child looked up at her confused, grabbing her hand as she knelt beside him.
