Series 2, Episode 52 ~ House of Laments
"Alfie..." Camilla whispered as the child looked up at her confused, grabbing her hand as she knelt beside him. Camilla's expression caused Nina to rush over and the girl let out a gasp too, Camilla looking to her friend unsure how they were going to get this passed Joy who was still stood in the room.
The 5/6-year-old Alfie (Camilla wasn't too sure) stood up, still clutching at Camilla's hand as he looked around in shock.
"Who is that?" Joy asked as she looked shocked at seeing the literal child at the back of the classroom wearing an oversized shirt and tie.
Fabian let out a nervous noise as he tried to think up a lie, along with the rest of them, "Eh, it's it's..." Nina spoke up, "it's Alfie's little brother... he's only visiting." She told Joy the rest of them smiling confidently at the lie and nodding their heads.
Knowing they needed to get little Alfie out of the room and quickly, Camilla grabbed his bag and directed the boy to the front of the room.
"why is he dressed like that?" Joy asked.
"that look is so on-trend for pre-tweens, you know nothing." Amber quickly spoke up as Nina and Fabian gathered their things along with Camilla's following the girl who was rushing the child Alfie from the room.
"W-we should be... getting him back to the house..." Fabian quickly said ushering Nina and Amber from the room before he to all but ran after his sister.
Little Alfie it was decided was staying with the girls until they could find out a way to get past the task or find another solution to turning him back to his normal size. Camilla had stolen a few clothes from the younger schools lost and found so they could dress Alfie properly.
Patricia had been talking to Eddie, Camilla hoping the two were arranging the date that they so desperately needed when they snuck Alfie into the house, the four teens not so subtly racing up the stairs with the smaller boy.
"Don't ask," Amber told the girl who was clutching her iPad to her looking at them all in confusion. "Oh, you can't ask, that's good."
"Amber!" Camilla hissed from the top of the stairs.
"Coming!" the girl shouted, turning and racing up the stairs Patricia on her heels.
"I didn't like being 9 the first time around," Alfie told them all with a sigh as Camilla pulled him into the girl's bedroom, causing Camilla to pull a face because she had been thinking he was like 6 this whole time.
"Go change kiddo," Camilla smiled reassuringly at the boy trying not to show how freaked out she was about the whole thing.
"This is insane!" Nina said watching as Alfie took the clothes Camilla had stolen and slunk behind a folding-screen Camilla had pulled open. Mr Millington had bought her two it in a deep dark blue colour that matched her bedding as a way to split up the room so the girls could feel like they had their own space but they never used them.
As she looked around, she saw Patricia holding up her iPad the words 'Alfie?' displayed, causing them all to make head nods telling her that the small child was in fact, Alfie.
"What are we going to do about him?" Fabian asked in a blind panic.
"I don't know." Nina sighed.
"I can heal him," Camilla confidently spoke up, picking up the old grimoire she had been reading before, all of them hearing the pages creak as she opened it, "I will find a way." little Alfie smiled up at her, and Camilla smiled back slightly. The boy climbing onto the book box at the end of her bed, Camilla holding her hand out so he wouldn't fall, so he was at a similar height to them all.
"if healing means potions I'm out." He told Camilla pulling a face causing the girl to laugh.
"If potions mean healing then your gonna do as I say, kid." Camilla retorted tapping his nose. "I'll pull a sicky tomorrow, you know, stay home from school to look after him." Camilla turned to tell the Sibuna's.
"Eh, I can look after myself," Alfie responded instantly.
This caused Fabian to scoff, and Amber quickly responded; "you couldn't look after yourself before you shrunk."
"Are you sure Cam?" Nina asked the girl, unsure of how Camilla would hide Alfie if Vera came looking.
Camilla nodded with a confident smile; she always knew she would eventually show Alfie the lab. She just didn't think it be so soon and with him being a 9-year-old, but if they were to hide away anywhere for a day it was the perfect place – plus she could try working on stuff to help reverse the curse.
"well, then it is more important than ever that we find out how to play the song of Hathor," Nina told them all, relaxing a little at the idea that at least tomorrow Alfie had someone looking after him. "Has anyone figured it out yet?"
"We've kinda been busy..." Camilla told Nina, ruffling Alfie's hair causing the boy to let out a small 'Hey' but the smile on his face told the girl he was glad it was her who was looking after him in his kid form. They'd actually have fun, and he wouldn't have to do homework or deal with a panicked Nina.
"what about getting the amulet off Victor?" she asked getting head shakes from everyone once again, Alfie being the one to not miss Camilla's expression as Nina asked that. "nobody?! Nope, nothing?!" Nina looked around at them all her voice rising in panic, "don't worry, we'll figure something out."
Camilla knew that in order to look after Alfie she'd need to take more than one day off, and there was only one person who could give her permission for that without causing anyone to question it. She had to go to Victor. She had been avoiding the man as much as she could since her curse got worse, knowing that her Arabic truth hiding method would soon leave her too if Alfie's curse was anything to go by.
"You have been avoiding me," Victor spoke up without even turning around from whatever he was doing at the back of his office.
Camilla rolling her eyes dramatically as she shut the door behind her, giving the phonograph in the corner a strange look. She knew that they had cleared the attic but she didn't realise Victor had kept the strange device they had used last year, and from the looks of things he was still using it. Camilla wandered over and picked up a cylinder, unlike the ones Sarah had recorded on the year before the ones Victor had, had been preserved professionally. Camilla smiling slightly at the signature of Frobisher-Smythe that was on the outside along with god symbols. Clearly, Victor had been listening to Roberts old lectures, only she would be surrounded by Egyptian nerds, but she loved Victor and Fabian for their strange nerdy ways.
"a bit of self-education?" she asked holding up the cylinder.
Victor turned around to see what she was talking about, shutting the small cabinet he had been looking in, though the man wasn't quick enough that Camilla didn't see the secret stash of chocolate he had hiding in the back of it. "I felt like listening to some of Roberts old lectures," Victor told her with a shrug, watching her put the cylinder back where she found it, "so why have you been avoiding me?"
"I have been cursed, to tell the truth..." Camilla hated the words as they tumbled from her mouth. The frustrated sigh as they did, causing the older man's eyebrows to quirk up bemused at how annoyed the young Protector seemed at the new reality of her life.
"and that involves avoidance because?" Victor asked, Camilla silently thanking him for not asking about how she was cursed or anything along those lines.
"I'm sorry Victor but I don't trust Vera!" the words were ones the two in the room expected, "And while this curse is happening, I don't think I'm safe being around you." She told him honestly moving forward to lean on the back of her chair.
Victor seemed to expect the answer and sat himself down in his chair not looking upset at her words, "I am sorry to put you in that position."
"don't get me wrong, it's just her I don't trust, you... if you had asked last year, then yeah I would say I didn't trust you, but now..." Camilla told him causing the man to look up at her, "let's just say, I will stop seeing good in you when I believe there is no good left to see, old man." Camilla told him with a roll of her eyes.
Her words having more impact than Victor let the girl see. No one had seen good in him since Sarah, so to hear the words out loud from someone almost caused tears to well up in his eyes.
"So, what can I do for you, Camilla?" Victor asked softly giving the girl a smile, which Camilla returned. That's what she was growing to love about her relationship with Victor, he knew when to push and when to not ask. He trusted her to come to him and tell him when she was ready to tell him.
Nina decided she too had to pull a sicky also the next day to look after Alfie, she was sat on her bed watching the pair bemused. Alfie was leaning on Camilla who was giving him her full attention as the pair coloured in the colouring book Camilla has before. Everything Alfie said Camilla was enthusiastically responding to causing the boy to keep grinning up at her before going back to colouring.
Nina would never tell the girl it but she knew one day she would be an amazing mother, but she had watched the girl with Alfie the night before too. Alfie had been playing up running around their room as Nina screamed at him to get to bed. Camilla, however, had grabbed the boy and put him into her bed, before settling down next to him with the first Narnia book, sat in a way he could read along with her, she got a fourth of a way getting through The Magician's Nephew and the boy had drifted off clutching Camilla's teddy to him snoring softly. At the questioning looks from Nina and Amber she just muttered something about Mrs Lewis always putting them to bed reading the Narnia books as having a hunch it would work.
Fabian and Amber had left early for the advertisement shoot, agreeing to make up some excuse for Camilla (Nina also getting strict instructions not to allow Camilla onto the laptop for Jamilla reasons). Though the twins both knew Mr Sweet wanted to flaunt them to show the Rutter's had come to the school. Sadly, he would have to just have to make do with just Fabian but Camilla was sure that one of them was more than enough.
"Why can't we go to the park?" Alfie asked quietly to Camilla causing the girl to sent Nina a grin, expecting the girl's reaction as she let out a sigh and looked over at Alfie. Whilst Camilla was making the boy his breakfast and sneaking it up, he had been demanding to go to the park. Camilla had distracted him the best she could, but Alfie was a young 9-year-old who had too much energy. The park was always the Lewis's solution to keeping him entertained.
"Alfie," Nina sat up putting her pencil into her jotter because she believed in doing the work, she would miss out on in class today even if Camilla didn't, "you know we can't go to the park when you've been transformed by an Egyptian curse."
"add that to the list of stuff we never thought we'd say in life," Camilla spoke up causing a smile to creep onto Nina's face.
"I've already rigged the toilet doors, so I am bored," Alfie spoke up, Camilla holding up a door handle behind his head to show Nina she would fix them later.
"What you can do," Nina spoke to him, "is help me think of a way to hear the song of Hathor."
"Boring!" He groaned dramatically falling back on Camilla's bed causing the girls to laugh at his antics.
"Maybe," Camilla laughed, tickling his sides causing a squeal from him before he sat up, "but unless we can think of a way to get that song."
"or stop Victor or get the amulet," Nina added, "then..."
Alfie gasped standing on the bed, "we distract him, you, Nina take it." He said as if it was the easiest thing in the world.
"Distract him?" Nina asked, a smile on her face as it was clear the young Alfie had a plan forming in his head.
"Alfie has a plan." He told the girls with a grin.
The girls soon came to learn that Young Alfie plans were almost as strange as normal Alfie plans. The only reason Camilla wasn't on take it duty was because Alfie wanted her to use magic. Camilla snuck to the bottom of the stairs, placing a broken lightbulb by her feet hoping the spell she had found would actually work. Little Alfie snuck over to Victor's door and knocked on it three times before he raced down the stairs towards Camilla, both of them expecting Victor to go see who had knocked.
Camilla stepped on the lightbulb and muttered, "Imphatus Bannacd." Just as he did causing all the electronic devices in the man's office, and in the hallway to go off. this caused a giggle to erupt from little Alfie's mouth as he grabbed Camilla's hand and they ran off into the living room. Of course, Camilla knew Victor would know it was her (she was going to argue she was just practising and didn't realise what the spell would do if he caught her), and she wasn't surprised when he came charging from his office and down the stairs. All the lights flashing back on as the man reached the bottom step, whatever he was listening too in his office coming back on again from the sounds of it too.
Alfie and Camilla hid in the kitchen hoping Nina used her time wisely.
"What's with the flowers..." Camilla asked as she bit into the cheese toasty she had just made, wandering out of the kitchen to see Eddie and Jerome talking at the bottom of the stairs. "it's Patricia your going on a date with, I told you the chocolates will be enough for her."
"wait," Jerome asked looking at his watch once he took in Camilla's tiger onezy clad self, her hair up in space buns clearly the girl was having a comfy night, trying not to find the look adorable, "weren't you meeting up at 6?"
"No sweat." Eddie shrugged it off, though Camilla couldn't help but frown a little why hadn't Patricia shown up yet, "girls right? It just means I can't get in trouble for giving a flower to my second favourite gal."
Eddie grabbed a single flower and handed it to Camilla with a wink causing a bright smile to appear on her face. This caused a frown to appear on Jerome's face as he watched the interaction. He didn't know why but seeing the way Camilla's face lit up at the small gesture from another boy didn't sit well with him, even though he knew Eddie was utterly enamoured with Patricia something about it just didn't sit right with him.
Thankfully a noise came from the upper floor giving him an excuse to look that way to see Mara coming down the stairs, "Where are you off to Jaffrey?" he asked.
"going over to the school to use the internet," Mara laughed looking at them all, "the Wifi seems to have gone down in here."
"I noticed that too," Eddie pipped up, pointing to her, "it's like gone dead. Like someone pulled the plug."
"Thank god for your date, between Fabian, Alfie and J here," Camilla said elbowing Jerome who smiled down at her, "we have too many movies to count."
"Don't forget Amber with her romcom's," Mara added causing Camilla to laugh and nod her head.
"Imagine someone doing that..." Jerome spoke, now after years of living with him, Camilla knew the tone well and glanced at him suspiciously. He, however, ignored the look, "now you go get ready for our next fake date." He told Mara causing Camilla's eyes to widen slightly, but thankfully only Eddie noticed her reason. The pictures were fake. They were probably only put up to make Mick jealous. Jara wasn't a real thing.
Hope and joy flooded through her and she couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face at the though and from the quiet snigger in her ear, Eddie had watched her realisation and couldn't help but find it rather funny.
"Really?" Mara spoke up. "okay... I mean another one?"
"Well Alfie's with his family in town, apparently," Jerome explained, "and I've got no plans." Jerome watched as Camilla held up her toasty for Eddie who took a bite out of it – the girl could tell he was worried and it was Eddie, food always helped – the action, however, was not apricated by Jerome who turned the full charm on as he turned back to Mara, "what's the big deal? It's not like your going to get used to me being your boyfriend."
The words caused a look to cross Camilla's face as she turned her back away from the boy to look at Eddie, it was a mix of disgust at the thought of Jara and heartbreak at the same time. Eddie knowing if it wasn't for the three-cheese cheese toasty he had in his mouth (his invention he was proud to have shown Camilla a few weeks before) he'd have burst out laughing at it.
Mara just laughed good-naturedly at Jerome before shaking her head and running back upstairs to get dressed for their fake date.
"excuse me boy's I have a date night of my own, filled with carbs and cheese," Camilla told them, following Mara up the stairs.
Eddie watched Jerome as he followed the small girl's path up the stairs, "you and Mara..." he started looking at Jerome, "are you sure about that?"
"What?"
"I don't know, it just, seems wrong..." Eddie shrugged trying to play off the moment as an observation before he glanced at his watch.
"Coming from the boy who wants to date Patricia." Jerome scoffed.
"We make sense at least," Eddie pointed out, "what do you and Mara honestly have in common? I don't know, I always thought you'd be great with our Cam." Eddie sighed, "but what do I know." He glanced back at his watch, missing the strange look that crossed Jerome's face. "you know what she has bailed on me!" he sighed frustratedly, handing his flowers over to Jerome. "don't want these to go to waste, on your fake date."
"Right..." Jerome responded taking the flowers and slowly walking off, unsure of how to process what had just been told to him.
Alfie was in a matching tiger onezy Camilla had next day delivered as they curled up with Amber, Nina and Fabian to watch the ad that had taken all day to shoot.
"Welcome to our school," Mr Sweet said on the screen, "A place that brings out the very best in young people. Here are our pupils learning –" Amber angrily pressed pause and the four watching the advert with her all burst out laughing.
"Bedtime squirt," Camilla spoke up getting to her feet.
"I can't believe they recast me." Amber told them, watching as Alfie jumped onto Camilla's back and this girl piggybacked him over to her bed, as it was time for him to go to sleep "this must be what it feels like to be a regular untalented person."
As Nina comforted Amber, Fabian sat up and smiled as Camilla tucked Alfie into her bed, the boy yawning before rolling over. The two had had an epic scooby doo marathon, with sweets and dinner in bed. She was really pulling out all the stops to look out for him.
"Your good at that you know," Fabian said putting an arm around her shoulder as she stood up and stepped back to look at the sleeping figure of the boy.
"It's Alfie, he's easy to look after," Camilla shrugged slightly.
"not to the normal person he isn't," Fabian joked as the pair walked over to Nina. "Have you thought about what will happen if we all get worse?" Fabian asked the girl softly, being aware of the sleeping tween in the room with them. "look at Alfie,"
"I promise that won't happen guys." Nina told the pair seeing the worry in their eyes. "maybe if we get the lyrics it will give us a clue as to what the tune is. They are on Victor's recording."
"so em, we need to keep watching Victor's office. Maybe one of us will get the chance to sneak in," Fabian told her.
"If I'm on Alfie duty, that is all on you two," Camilla told them causing Nina to laugh and roll her eyes at Camilla but nodding her head in agreement. Alfie was a full-time job in itself. Camilla would need as much sleep as she could so it was cool for her to bail on this midnight mission.
"Okay, me and Fabian will keep a lookout." Nina smiled at the plan.
"I'll take first watch," Fabian spoke with a confident smile that only Camilla noticed didn't reach his eyes.
"satakun bikhayr" (You'll be fine) Camilla told him in Arabic, knowing he wouldn't want to worry Nina, reassuring her brother as she lifted his arm from her shoulders giving his hand a squeeze.
"la 'urid alfawdaa," (I don't want to mess up) Fabian sighed speaking softly to her.
Camilla rolled her eyes and picked up his notebook from her book box at the end of the bed, "thuma la tansaa hdha," (Then don't forget this). Fabian shook his head at his sister's words but took the notebook from her, before leaving the room.
"You know," Amber spoke up looking to Camilla, "when you do that, it really freaks me out sometimes."
Camilla couldn't help the grin that formed on her face at the girl's words, Nina took smiling at the Amber comment. Despite everything that was happening to them, the fact they still had each other was the main thing holding them together. Sibuna was their family and family could get through anything together.
