Series 2, Episode 54 ~ House of Alibis

"FABIAN... CAMILLA!"

The two turned to see Trudy at the door. This was not good. "what have you done?!" the woman demanded. An exhibition had been broken into, and the twins were being blamed for it.

Within seconds Camilla was by her brother's side taking his hand the moment she got next to him, knowing that at that moment he was not the twin to be talking, not with his current forgetful state anyway. Camilla knew Fabian was grateful for her rush over, as the two looked at a horrified Trudy who was taking them in as if she didn't even know them. Neither twin wishing to ever see that look on Trudy's face ever again, they never wished for the woman to even think they were capable of doing something like this.

"Guys..." she whispered in a horrified way as she took a step closer to them both, Fabian gripping onto Camilla's hand tightly. Trudy passed them both and gasped as she looked at the exhibition that was missing and the glass that remained in its wake. "what did you do? Who did this?!" Trudy's tone was something neither of them had heard before – though Fabian wasn't sure how he knew that in the moment. It was blunt, sharp, cutting them both straight to the cores. This was a Trudy who meant business, this wasn't the Trudy who hugged them extra tightly on their birthday because their parents didn't send a card and everyone else was more focused on Halloween, this wasn't the Trudy who smiled knowingly with Camilla and Amber as they watched Nina and Fabian flirt, this wasn't their Trudy who fussed them and coddled them and was the mother figured the twins never knew they needed until they came to school. This Trudy was scarily like their own mother and that chilled them to their core.

Fabian was the first to speak up as he looked at the exhibition. Camilla was too busy staring at Trudy with pain in her eyes, trying and failing at not reacting to the cold nature of the woman that had turned on them. "I-I... I can't remember."

"Oh, come on, I know you two are as thick as thieves but you can't hide from this," Trudy demanded looking at the exhibition.

"I-I," Fabian's stuttering and distress caused something in Camilla to click as if the need of her twin outweighed whatever curse was on her. "I'm really sorry..." Fabian pathetically added looking to Camilla then to their hands as he felt something wash over him too.

Something warm, welcoming. Like a hot, steaming bath on a cold, wintery night, whose very warmth snuck right down to a person's very bones and soothed a person's soul.

Something that caused him to remember everything that had happened since he walked into the room, causing his memories with Camilla to brightly burn in his mind as if resisting the very curse he had been put under as if something with a greater power than Senkhara could ever dream took over the joined pair.

Something that seemed to have been waiting dormant for a very long time who's awakening felt like it had been a long time coming. The feeling greeted both Rutter twins like a cat stretching lazily after just waking from sleep, looking at its owner with a knowing secretive glance, as if the universe had told it all the secrets whilst in its slumber.

Something both twins knew, with nothing more than a shared look, they had to investigate further but now was not the time.

Camilla turned to Trudy, "You can't believe we of all people would do this? Our family preserves artefacts, studies them...we don't steal them!"

Trudy's expression softened slightly at Camilla's words, glancing over the pair with mothering eyes, not wanting to think the worst in the situation, but she had to work with what was in front of her. It was clear to the woman that the twins both seemed hurt at her accusations, she could read it from their actions. Fabian kept glancing at the case biting at his lip, his eyes darting around telling the woman he was thinking over every worst-case scenario possible and from the way he was blinking rapidly he was trying to suppress the act of crying. Camilla's shoulders hunched over, the fight in her words wasn't there like it normally would be, the biggest tell was the fact she kept pushing her hair out of her face as if even her hair was bothering her and she at least had some control over that.

The trio all glanced to the door as they heard someone push it open, the twins unsure if seeing their uncle step into the exhibition was going to be a good or bad thing. Not quite yet. Jasper could either assume the worst or he could take a step back, knowing his niece and nephew well enough to know this was not them. Not at all.

"WHAT?!" Was the first thing Jasper shouted in shock, which was to be expected. He had just gotten back from his lunch to see his niece and nephew and Trudy all stood next to an exhibition case that was empty and smashed in. "m-my..." Jasper stuttered in a very Fabian-like way as he approached them all, distress heard in his voice, "my artefact..."

"Jasper," Trudy quickly spoke up before either twin could interject. "it's the ox bell, it's been stolen."

"But its priceless."

"Yes." Trudy spoke calmly, looking to the twins who were looking at one another, Camilla doing her best to silently calm down a distraught Fabian who still looked close to tears. "and the twins were the only ones on the scene, and they are being very tight-lipped about the whole thing."

Jasper looked to his right at his family, just as the twins looked up at him. Jasper knew the moment he saw them the twins were innocent, hell he'd know even if he didn't see them. The twins had been taught the importance of history and learning from it, along with preserving history, before they knew how to walk. "this can't be anything to do with you two," Jasper told them softly, sending them a reassuring smile which the twins slightly returned. It was nice to know one adult in the room was on their side.

"that's what we've been trying to say to Trudy," Fabian told their uncle, his voice thick but reassured.

Trudy scoffed a little, but there was a slight hesitance to her next words as if she was unsure if it was really the twins like she had first thought, "you two would be the last people I'd suspect... but, it didn't look good when I walked in. Camilla on lookout as you did the deed, Fabian."

"Trudy..." Jasper calmed down the woman, stepping forward so he stood slightly in front of his niece and nephew. As if the small movement would guard them against the woman's accusations. "it is clear that a theft like this isn't in the Twins character..." the words came with a sense of knowing to them. As if they were the utter truth above all truth.

Trudy nodded her head slightly as if at her core she knew that to be the truth but she had just needed someone else to say it. "Alright, just go back to the house," Trudy told the twins, "but we will be talking about this later."

Camilla and Fabian glanced to one another, before glancing at their uncle grateful he had come in when he had or for all they knew they'd have been taken to Sweetie and with his current state they might have been out of Amun Academy.

"Come on..." Camilla muttered slightly, pulling on Fabian's hand pulling him from the library. Both of them hearing the worried sigh Jasper let out as they left.

They needed to find that ox bell and fast. Jasper's reputation was on the line as he had been given the role as the curator because of it. He was family and he needed their help, but they had no clue how to help him out at that moment.

The Curse had gotten worse for another Sibuna member, or so the twins found out as they separated once getting to Anubis house. Camilla reassuring her brother they would figure out what was going on together, like always. Neither of them forgetting the odd sensation that had happened in the library though they knew they had had enough excitement for one day. The gods would have to just wait for them to figure out what had happened for a little bit longer.

Amber was grateful to Camilla as she watched the girl finish the chapter of the Narnia book she was on, Alfie curled into her side cuddling an army man to him. from the way the boy's eyes fluttered ever so slightly he was fighting sleep. When she walked into the room earlier, she didn't gasp or make a big deal out of the ageing of Amber, instead, she grabbed the girl's hand and told her that they all knew to be jealous when they were older because Amber was ageing with such grace and beauty. When they all aged together it was now just confirmed that Amber was to be the most beautiful of them all no matter what age they were at. It was a small thing, but it was enough to make the worried blonde slightly happier. From her tone Camilla seemed confident they would break the curse, she kept talking of them ageing together, and if Camilla was confident that was enough for Amber to be confident, they would do it too.

"Amber, could you give me a –" Nina whispered from across the room, she had found a music box of Sarah's when Trudy had cleared out the attic and as a side project to keep her mind off all things Sibuna she had been trying to restore it and clean it up herself.

"Shh Nina," Amber retorted, "something important is going to happen to Lucy Pevensie."

Nina glanced over to Camilla with a grin as the twin closed the book, little Alfie having drifted off to dream about Ninja dinosaurs or whatever it was the little boy dreamt about.

Expertly Camilla detangled herself from the small boy and tucked him into her cover's before putting the book down on her bedside table for them to continue reading tomorrow, looking between her friends before looking down at the boy.

Her two friends knew something had happened to the twins on their library visit; it was written all over Camilla's face but whatever it was they had hoped she'd share it after Alfie was sleep. From how she was acting however they knew it wasn't going to happen.

"We should all get some sleep." Nina murmured slightly, as she picked up the jewellery box from the floor and put it away, "we need it as much as Alfie does."

"No, I want to help," Amber told Nina as she glanced up from one of the twin's notebooks from some dig, they had been on with their family. She had been hoping to see as Senkhara had links to the boy king that something Annabeth Rutter had found might help them out – so far nothing but she had just moved onto Fabian's notebooks which were way more informative than Camilla's. As much as she liked the fact Camilla took great detail in naming the trenches they dug in after the Teletubbies or the fact that her hair and the humidity would never be friends (something Amber had noted down to try to see if she could fix somehow. If anyone could help Camilla out in that situation it be her), the girl's notebooks just weren't as informative as Fabian's, even if it felt like she was trying to decipher that information from some situations when he got too excited to record something down and his handwriting went out the window.

Nina smiled kindly at the girl, "it might be easier to read if I turn the light on?"

"no!" Amber instantly spoke up, causing Camilla and Nina to glance at her confused, "please don't."

"Okay," Nina told her, before looking to Camilla who was pulling on a jumper, a new grimoire out at the end of her bed for her to sit up all night and pour over trying to find magical solutions to her friends' issues. Nina had given up trying to get her to sleep, knowing Camilla would rather be sleep deprived and live off coffee, even if she hated the bitter stuff and was confused as to how her brother drank it every day, but if it meant somehow finding a solution to their curses she would drink it.

"So, find anything about the other elements about the song of Hathor in your books?" Nina asked after 20 minutes of silence in their room where each girl silently read their own books.

Camilla shook her head causing the loose messy bun she had pulled her hair into to come tumbling down, causing her to groan softly and an amused smile from Amber before she answered Nina's question, "nothing so far, I'm only up to them finding Gary – which I'm glad Fabian found worthy of adding a note on. It makes a nice break from reading about pottery." Amber looked between the girls, "this stuff is actually kind of fascinating, why didn't you two tell me?"

"When you grow up with it, it's less reading for fun and more reading for something to have something to talk about at the dinner table," Camilla told Amber who sent the girl a sympathetic smile.

Nina missed the end of the conversation as she glanced down at the book she had taken from Robert's hidden study, an excited smile flitting onto her face, "Okay...," this got the attention of her friends, "no mention of instruments here but this book does have the lyrics!" with that Nina got to her feet the read aloud what it said, "Egypt Mourns Tutankhamun, Killed by a stepmother's knife. The son of Hathor shall declare. Senkhara took his life."

Camilla sat up straighter as Nina finished reading, hating that the first thought that flitted through her mind was how much her mother would love the book Nina was holding as it went with her research badly. Not that she would give it to Annabeth Rutter.

"Our ghost lady killed king tut?" Amber said bringing Camilla back to the real issue at hand in one sentence.

"According to this," Nina lifted the book though from the worried tone it was clear she believed what the book said.

"At least we know what we are up against now," Camilla smiled at them trying to act confident and hoping it worked.

"Do we? Who knows what she is capable of?" Amber's voice cracked a little as she tried to hide her fear, "and why does she have to pick on us? Its so unfair. I had a lot of stuff planned and I'm past it before I've even graduated." Camilla jumped off her bed and ran over to Amber as the first tears spilt from the girl's eyes. The twin gathering her friend in her arms and looking over to Nina who sat at the end of the bed. "things could not be worse... "

"Well..." Camilla spoke causing Amber to look up at her, "what? things can always get worse," she told her friend honestly.

Fabian rushed through the door at that moment still in the clothes from before having not changed into his PJ's like everyone else despite the lateness of the hour. He looked worked up, panicked and slightly out of breath as if he had rushed up the stairs after pacing his room for some time – which is probably what he had done knowing Fabian. "something bad happened at the library!" he told the girls looking to his sister apologetically.

"Worst than this?" Amber pointed to her face.

"Yeah..." Fabian responded instantly with a nod of his head, because yeah it was slightly worse than Amber's ageing up because his sister and him were being framed for a crime they didn't commit. It could turn bad and quickly – if the Mara situation proved anything to anyone. "the Ox Bell from the library has been stolen, and Cam and I were caught standing right next to the display case."

"That is what you weren't telling us," Amber spoke looking to Camilla whose arms she was still in as Nina jumped to her feet looking as panicked as Fabian did.

"There is no way they can pin that on you guys," Nina spoke trying to reassure herself as much as the twins, missing the wide-eyed looks the pair sent to each other as they both realised at the same time Fabian remembered that. It had been at least an hour and a half and he still remembered the details. Whatever had happened to them they needed to get on top of ASAP because they might have found the magical loophole Camilla had been giving up her sleep-in order to find.

"Slight issue, I can't remember," Fabian told Nina as he tore his eyes off Camilla in order to deal with the pressing issue at hand. The Ox Bell theft. "how can I convince anyone we didn't steal that bell when I don't even know myself what it was, we did."

"and it's not like I have much of a leg to stand on," Camilla added with a shrug, "my record has a list of disciplinaries a mile long. No one will believe I didn't do it, not if someone pulls my schools records out."

Nina glanced between the twins worried, "if you two stole it, then where is it?" she asked them both bluntly.

Camilla and Fabian looked back at her blankly because honestly, they had no clue where the bloody bell was, "I don't know..." Fabian sighed after a few seconds, getting rather sick of hearing the phrase leave his mouth. He was starting to sound like a broken record.

"Because neither of you took it!" Nina firmly told them both. The twins would never do something like this and she would go down fighting for them if needs be. "neither of you are thief's,"

"Except that time when we stole things from Victor's office, the cellar, the attic..." Amber pipped up trying to lighten the mood a little.

"don't listen to her!" Nina intervened missing the sarcasm in her worry but Camilla didn't as she let out the smallest of laughs which caused a bright smile to creep onto Amber's face. At least someone got her words.

"how do we prove we didn't do it?" Fabian asked apprehension etched into every word as he knew at the end of the day when they needed someone to blame whoever did end up doing it was going to be expelled. Expulsion was nothing really, but to the twin's parents if they got expelled for stealing an Egyptian artefact – neither twin wanted to even start to think about the trouble they would get in for that.

Nina looked back at Fabian mouth open, but it was Amber who spoke for her, "we find this bell and return it, right Nina..."

"You figured something out..." Camilla spoke up. She had been watching Nina's face, she knew the girl's expressions almost as well as she knew Fabian's these days. When the girl had paused it hadn't been out of shock of trying to answer Fabian's question it had been because a realisation of something had dawned on her. A realisation she didn't seem to what to have had.

Nina glanced at Camilla before taking a breath and slowly breaking the realisation she had to them all, "is anyone else wondering that the bell might be the thing we're missing to finish the task?"

"Who's take it? Victor" Amber asked.

"Or Vera..." Camilla mumbled but thankfully no one heard her.

"Victor might not want us to finish the task," Fabian said softly.

"well, we will see about that," Nina spoke in a determined voice.

Camilla knew she needed to be seen around school the next day, with this confusion as to if she took the bell or not being around people gave her an alibi, which came with the issue of who was going to look after little Alfie. An issue which was easily sorted with the help of her little sister, Poppy. The girl wanted out of her morning classes and Camilla was paying her to do so, win-win the Clarke girl thought.

As the two girls walked into Alfie and Jerome's bedroom Camilla couldn't help but smile as they walked into Alfie running around the room with an aeroplane pretending to fly it, "I found you a babysitter, Squirt," Camilla told the boy as he turned around to see who had walked into the room. He looked over the two girls before he climbs onto his bed and started to bounce.

"LOOK I'M BOUNCING REALLY HIGH!" he told them both causing both girls to let out a laugh.

"Hey buddy what's your name?" Poppy asked him watching him bounce.

"Flash!"

"Call him whatever you want, just watch over him till lunchtime," Camilla told her little sister who smiled at her.

"Don't worry Cam, I am great with little kids," Poppy told her.

Camilla gave her a hug as she smiled, "you are honestly the best popsicle. I'll take over from lunchtime okay."

With that Camilla rushed from the room. She had agreed to walk over to the school with Fabian so they could talk over what happened the day before.

"Well, that's our little monster sorted with, you ready for school Fabian?" Camilla called as she noticed Fabian go up the stairs, clearly, he had forgotten she had said they'd just meet in the entranceway as she had to deal with little Alfie.

Fabian looked up at his sister's voice before turning to see her waving at him from the bottom of the stairs, Camilla rolling her eyes as she saw the collection of paper's in his hands – Fabian's weird way to remember everything he had forgotten. Mumbling to himself he walked back down the stairs, pausing just before the bottom one for some reason.

Camilla turned around as she heard heels and saw Vera coming out the kitchen holding a full laundry basket. The woman paused at the sight of the twins together, "lost something you two?"

Fabian's headshot up at the woman's voice. Even though he was forgetting everything else he couldn't forget Camilla's curse and he knew this could be dangerous. He jumped down the remaining steps and stood next to his sister, "you could say that," he told her with a sigh. Camilla remaining silent because she could not trust her mouth these days. "it's just, I've been making lots of mental notes..." Fabian told her, lifting the notebook from his blazer pocket as if to prove to her what he meant.

"Well, I'm sure it all makes sense to the two of you..." Vera smiled at the pair as she wandered past them to head up the stairs herself, stopping where Fabian stopped to reach down and pick up a folded bit of paper. "oh, you dropped one."

Camilla stepped forward and took it for Fabian, Vera smiling before headed back up the stairs as the twins opened it instantly. On it read; 'Dear Fabian, remember that Vera is going to steal an exhibit, love Fabian'.

"Oh, for Set's sake!" the curse was out Camilla's mouth before she could stop it, causing the woman to pause on her travels up the stairs. It wasn't often you heard Egyptian gods being used as curse words which is why she paused.

"Anything important dears?" she asked them causing the twins to look up at her.

"No, no..." Fabian quickly spoke as Camilla glanced away from the woman, the pure hatred she felt in that moment towards her clearly etched onto her face. That bitch was the reason she and Fabian were close to expulsion.

Fabian smiled once more before looping his arm in Camilla's and all but dragging her from Anubis house. They needed to get to the library and fast. They needed to prove it wasn't them.

"TRUDY!" Fabian spoke the moment he burst into the library, Camilla on his heels though she was sure the little bit of paper wouldn't be enough to clear their name.

The woman in question was dusting exhibitions but turned around at her name, slightly surprised to see the twins back again so soon. "Fabian? Camilla?" she spoke up in confusion looking around the room anxiously, "I don't think you two should be here until this case is closed."

Fabian opened the note and handed it to her, "we have cleared it up." He told her as she glanced over the note.

"Dear Fabian, remember that Vera is going to steal an exhibit, love Fabian'" Trudy read aloud before she sighed and looked at the pair of them with a sad smile on her face. "I don't think this will exactly stand up in court."

"That doesn't matter!" Fabian groaned slightly as the woman didn't get what he was trying to hint, "Vera took the Ox Bell, that's what matters."

"Trudy it really wasn't us," Camilla spoke softly, almost pleading the woman to believe them.

Trudy looked over the pair before lowering her voice a little, "Well I may have one or two suspicions of my own, already," She told the pair causing a smile to flit onto Camilla's face as she realised, they had their Trudy back on Team Rutter twin.

"You need to help us clear our name Trudy," Camilla softly spoke to the woman grabbing her hand.

"You are the only one who can," Fabian finished for Camilla grabbing her other hand causing the woman to look between the pair for a second before nodding her head. The twins had a special place in her heart. When she had met them they had never really understood what it was like to have affection as a way of love, causing her to always go out her way to hug them a little tighter even if they stiffened for a second before allowing the hug, or always putting a little more food on their plates the first week back as she knew they had been in Egypt for three months. In her time, she had seen the two grow from quiet 11-year olds into the fiercely loyal twins they now were today and she couldn't be prouder of them. They were asking for her help, and her help she would give them.

Camilla had a slight spring in her step as she and Nina wandered back to Anubis house to collect Alfie from Poppy. Nina not being too happy Camilla had trusted Poppy in the first place but it had happened, they had best deal with what they had to deal with.

Poppy was on her brother's bed, headphones in and a magazine out as they entered the room again, looking slightly spooked as she looked up to see them before ripping her headphones out her ears and at least having the nerve to look apologetic as the two older girls looked at her disappointedly.

"Coming!" Poppy pretended she was playing hide and seek rushing over to the bed, crouching down under it and looking for Alfie.

"Has he been okay?" Camilla asked, looking to Nina nervously.

"No trouble at all," Poppy told her big sister over her shoulder.

"Where is he?" Nina asked looking around.

"It turns out he is actually very good at hide and seek." Poppy laughed nervously.

"Please tell me you didn't let him leave this room," Nina asked the girl who was getting to her feet.

"Never been out my sight..." Poppy lied causing Camilla to sighed, before pushing her hair back and leaving the room. They had to hunt for Alfie.

Nina was on her heels and they split up as they got to the top landing, Nina rushing to their room where Amber was sat in bed, "we can't find Alfie anywhere, have you seen him?" Nina asked, Camilla, smiling and waving to her friend from the doorway.

"I just saw him," Amber told them both with a nod.

"Where?" Camilla asked instantly she was getting worried for the little boy.

"In the wardrobe..." Amber pointed.

"Narnia, of course!" Camilla laughed before pushing past Nina to rush to her wardrobe, opening the doors and letting out a gasp. Nina behind her letting out an equally surprised gasp as she saw the baby that was cuddled up in little Alfie's old clothes. Things were getting serious and fast.
