Chapter Five: From the Fire

Kagome didn't see Eren for quite some time.

There was no sun to clock the hours or days that passed.

There was only new pain and hunger.

The door to the cell block opened, she heard the creak as it swung closed. She didn't bother lifting her head, another round was what she was in for. She cringed and it hurt to do so. Her dry tongue, touched her cracked her lips and as she prepared herself for the torment. She waited several minutes and the door to her cell opened. She closed her eyes and waited for harsh laughter and harsher hands to grab her. When they didn't she opened her eyes and turned her head toward the front of her cell. Cerulean met harsh, steely gray and she felt her breath catch in her throat. There was a line of tension in the shoulders of the man that had brought her to this hell.

She looked away and waited. He hadn't been the kindest to her upon finding her in that abandoned house. His hands had caused her pain and she was waiting for his assault to begin. Why else would he be there if not to continue where her previous captors left off? She heard movement, clothing whispering against one another and was surprised when cool hands touched her feverish cheeks. Her head was gently being lifted and a warm cloth was put under head like a pillow. She inhaled the masculine scent attached to the cloth, knowing it to be his from the last time she was held in his arms. Her sticky eyes opened as his cool fingers gently prodded some of her deeper scrapes.

Her lips parted and she had to clear her dry throat to question, "What are you doing?"

His eyes met hers again and his voice rumbled over her, just as cold as his hands, "Can't you tell?" She heard water trickle and his hand reached out to tilt her head as a cup was pressed to her lips. There was blood on his boots but she was too concerned with the cool water soothing her throat to question it. When she greedily had her fill, she sighed, the small pleasures in life really made it worth it. He set her head down and stood to step away. "I came to tell you, you'll go to trial this afternoon. I felt responsible for your being here and felt it best I tell you."

Kagome turned her gaze up at him, brows furrowing, "Trial? I have done nothing wrong."

Levi's steely eyes hardened, "It's the way things are done. Your fate is out of my hands..." he was quiet for a moment, "...this isn't what I had in mind for you." He gestured to the cell and her abused body. He felt responsible for what had happened to her, she should have fallen under the Scouting jurisdiction, he found her after all. He pitied this woman before him, knowing she had no choice but to take her licks, bound like an animal as she was.

She wasn't the Jaeger boy, a titan-shifter that was healing at abnormal rates.

She was just a girl, a crazy girl with phenomenal powers.

And she didn't deserve the shit she was being put through.

He found her. She was his responsibility if nothing else.

The military police wanted the same for her as they had for Eren. Death. Execution. For existing and being an unknown factor in their straight-forward little world. The garrison wanted her to man the walls, make their jobs easier while burdening her, keeping her captive. He watched her shudder, despite the fever that plagued her.

None of it would happen, not if he had any say it. And he would have a say.

"Rest. They will come for you soon." He watched her eyes close as she nodded her head though it looked like it took her every effort to do just that. If he so much as caught a whiff of the scum that did this to her, they would pay in flesh and blood. His moral compass was definitely off but he could recognize torture for the sake of gathering information and torture for the sake of enjoyment. He knew which one these men had decided to pursue.

He closed the cell behind him and met Erwin the hall outside.

The man's light gaze was calculating, "Interesting girl." Levi didn't bother answering him, "Is she a benefit to us?"

Levi pinned him with a stare, "Immensely. I watched with my own eyes as she launched arrows at titans and saw them disintegrate. If her power is that effective, controllable, then she would be an asset on our missions. I can kill Eren if worse comes to worse, but that girl could do it without needing to be near him."

He turned toward the cell and Erwin's voice was careful and curious when he asked, "And she poses a danger, could you kill her too?"

Levi's eyes flicked almost lazily to his commanding officer and the response was quick on his tongue, "Of course."

"Would you want to?"

Levi crossed his arms over his chest, "She is my responsibility for better or worse, I'll do what needs to be done if and when the time comes."

Erwin nodded his head and left it that.

Levi was nothing if not responsible. Whatever that mean, for good or bad.

.

She was dizzy when they grabbed her and all but dragged her outside and into the sun. Her eyes were hurting her after days and days of being in a fire lit room. She grimaced and she cried out when they shackled her arms behind her. She couldn't tell, her eyes were adjusting, but she could hear whispers all around her. She felt a pole placed behind her and she crossed her legs out in front of her. Her arms were bound behind her back, linked behind the pole and finally her eyes adjusted the room. Her eyes came in contact with the floor first, seeing the blood stained stone. She wondered whose blood it was before turning her gaze to her surroundings.

She was surprised to see she was in a court house with people surrounding her and whispering.

There was a man, older, presumably the judge that would sentence her for whatever and to whatever.

His hand slammed several times on the desk in front of him and the room quieted down.

Her gaze caught that of the only person she recognized in the room.

Levi.

The judge began to speak and Kagome gave him her full attention, "Young woman, I am premier Darius Zackly, and you are here to decide your fate." His pale eyes met hers over the top of his glasses, "State your name."

She cleared her throat, it was no longer as sore as before thanks to the water she had been giving, "Kagome Higurashi."

He nodded and wrote it down, "How did you come to be outside the walls?"

Be honest.

"I came from outside the walls. I have never heard of this place until I was found."

Zackly's brows furrowed, "Have you been outside them your whole life?"

Kagome sighed, "No. I... woke up outside them."

"Were you kidnapped, have you lost your memories?"

Kagome shook her head despite how much it hurt to do so, "No. You're asking the wrong questions."

The older man frowned, "Then tell me what the answers to the questions I should be asking."

Her gaze met his steadily, "I am the Guardian of a jewel that was brought into existence long before you born. Long before this world was born. Before titans walked the earth, a time where demons took to the skies." Kagome's voice was distant, no longer was she in the room hurting, instead she was gone many years ago with a boy that had saved her thousand times before. "I was gifted with immortality from God's that felt this jewel needed protecting and that I was the only one capable. I have passed through years and snippets of time that you could only dream of seeing. The power I displayed that day I was brought here is miko power, I was born with the ability to slay demons... and your titans are easily slain much like my youkai. That is how I survived outside the walls when I woke up in this time... I sleep after a few years, after something bad happens. As the guardian of this jewel, it is my job to keep - "

A scoff came from the right side of the room, "Are you actually going to believe this nonsense, Premier?"

Kagome turned to him, a frown on her lips, "Whether you believe it or not doesn't matter. It doesn't change the fact it is true."

The man spoke again, ignoring her, "Clearly she's insane but there is little doubt of her powers. We need to determine if whatever gives her, her powers can be mimicked."

There was a pause.

They all knew what the unsaid words were.

Give her body to science. Experiment.

Kagome spoke up, "My powers I was born with. You're either born with them or not. You can't just... transfer them or create what doesn't exist in someone already."

Zackly turned from the military policemen that had spoken up and to the Scout regime, "And what of you, Commander Erwin?"

Kagome looked to a tall blond man with calculating eyes and little expression, "Use her. Her powers are unique, she is a great asset to our initiative. Like Eren -" Kagome visibly perked up, " - she can help our odds, eliminate titans within seconds and without having to be close to them."

Another man spoke up, "And who is to say her powers can't work on humans! What stops her from attacking us?" There were several choruses of agreement throughout the crowd.

A familiar voice spoke among the crowd, cut through it, and silenced it all at once, "Just as with the boy, I will keep her in check."

"Two abnormal creatures to watch? How can we trust you won't wear yourself thin and make fatal mistakes?" the same man yelled.

Levi turned that cold gaze to him, his mouth curling into a frown, "You try my patience, pig, this is second time today you question me. Look at her." He demanded as he jumped the small gate to her, pointing to the wounds, "Look at her wounds. If her aim was to hurt us, she would have done it days ago under the tender mercy of the Military Police."

A scathing remark came from the very military police that aimed to hurt her, "She could be biding her time."

Kagome spoke, quietly, her eyes earnest, a film of tears making them sparkle brilliantly, "I am a protector of mankind, I have fought wars and battles to defend man time and time again. I am here now to help you. Let me!"

"It doesn't change the fact she's crazy!" Yelled a random man from the crowd. "How can you trust a crazy person?"

Levi spoke, "Whether her story is real or not is irrelevant, her power is real."

"And it poses a real threat!" yelled the MP spokesman.

Levi turned to the man, "A manageable one."

Zackly cleared his throat as he called order to the court house.

"My decision is clear then. Commander Erwin, take this girl. The conditions of her captivity are as follows: she does not Captain Ackerman's side. If she even so much as steps a toe out of line, you are to eliminate her. She must prove her worth and maintain a steady kill count of titans."

Erwin met the premier's eyes and nodded, "Done."

Levi had yet to take his eyes from the girl in front him, "Yes, sir."

There were several that erupted in anger at the ruling but Levi ignored it and went to grab the keys to the shackles that bound her, offering a cool stare to the military policeman that held it in front of him. He returned to her side, unshackled her and knowing she lacked the energy to walk, lifted her into his arms. Erwin followed at a subdued pace, Kagome turning to look at Levi with curious eyes. They left the sound of the courtroom and Levi muttered, "Welcome to the Scouts, crazy."

Kagome quietly settled in his arms, grateful to not have to walk, "Not crazy."

.

She was being taken to a room, inside she heard voices, one of them familiar and angry, "But we have to save her! She can't stay there!"

Another voice female, and amused, "Relax! Let me take a look at you! Worry about that girl later! There is soooo much I need to look at!"

"But you don't understand what they're doing to her down -" the door opened and Kagome was not surprised to see her cell mate. Eren turned his gaze to her and he stood on unsteady legs as he moved toward the door. "Kagome! You're okay!"

Although 'okay' was a relative statement, she was alive and out of the dungeons belonging to the MP's.

Kagome reached out, her eyes meeting the magnificent turquoise of his, and her fingers touched the bruises on his cheek, "You look a little worse then when I last saw you." Eren's eyes darted to Levi for just a second but Kagome caught the look and blanched, turning to Levi, "Did you -"

Levi walked forward and deposited her none-too-gently on the couch, "It was for his own good."

Erwin walked in after them, "It was the only way to prove we could control him if needed."

Something dangerous flashed in her eyes and despite her own wounds she quickly began to mother the young man who honestly didn't seem too upset by the attention. Levi rolled his eyes and Hange appeared with a tooth in her handkerchief, explaining happily that it had grown back so quickly.

Erwin looked at Kagome and Eren, his new recruits, one completely unaware how her life was going to change and with a smile that was partially a grimace he began, "Welcome to the Scouts."

Eren's smile lit the room.

Kagome could only nod her head. What could she say to the men that had saved her from a worse fate?

Erwin turned to Levi, "Take them to their new home, settle them, and begin training. I'll leave them in your hands, Levi. Good luck."

Levi didn't say anything but he felt like he was going to need it.

Note: Sooo. Levi won, I have an Eren x Kagome in the making. Personally, I don't like when authors quote scenes directly from the show so I'll be paraphrasing/adjusting it to fit the story. Hope you enjoyed! Leave a little love, yeah?
