Series 2, Episode 57 ~ House of Reflections
"So the 7 little stars are, 7 random objects," Alfie concluded with a bite of his French toast, they were explaining what they found in the tunnels to Amber and Patricia as they finished up their breakfast the next day.
"Hmm! Yeah," Fabian spoke up chewing fast as he wanted to talk but his mouth was full.
Nina, however, spoke up for him causing Camilla to laugh quietly at her brother as he furiously chewed on his toast, "but the riddle says they borrow light so we think they must be reflector's in some way."
"Shiny stuff?" Amber spoke up sitting up in her chair happily, "mirrors? you've come to the right girl,"
"Told ya!" Camilla teased lifting her tea to her mouth. getting a good-natured eye roll from Amber at the jab.
"I'm guessing they're not just regular mirror's?" Patricia asked them all, knowing if it was that simple the four around them wouldn't be telling them about the task as between Nina and Camilla, they would have had a mirror on them.
"We tried regular mirrors; they didn't work," Camilla told her with a nod of her head.
"however, Nina now has 7 years bad luck," Alfie added intestinally causing the American girl to shake her head at him bemused.
Fabian finally swallowed his toast, taking a sip of his black coffee before speaking up, "we think each of them has the symbol of Horus on them," this caused blank looks from Amber and Patricia, both twins knowing that if Nina and Alfie hadn't been with them they too would have had blank looks at that sentence, causing him to instantly add, "it's a bird symbol." As a bit more detail for the two girls, "You know, the falcon takes flight." He added quoting the riddle causing the girls to nod their head in understanding.
"So, we hunt the shiny stuff." Amber told them all as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "what does the dollhouse say?" she asked turning to Nina, "in its usual... unclear dollhouse way."
"absolutely bloody nothing," Camilla answered Amber, with a look to say she didn't expect anything less from the dollhouse. She got it was their connection to Sarah but the clues to the Ankh pieces were clearer than the messages the dollhouse gave them.
"Yet!" Fabian added for his sister quickly, trying to remain positive as he looked around the table at the Sibuna's, "what we really need is a clue as to where the reflectors might be." Fabian glanced to Nina who looked as if she just remembered something, "Are you okay?"
"I don't know," she spoke up softly, "I keep thinking I've seen this bird symbol before..."
"Fabian's bedroom?" Camilla offered with a shrug of her shoulders, "he is one of his favourite Gods. He has a wee Horus statue on his bedside table and when he was younger he used to talk to him and –"
Fabian cut his sister off before she could keep talking by putting his arm around her head and clamping his hand over her mouth. "Serious discussion happening Cam, no need to bring that up."
This caused laughter to burst from Alfie and Patricia whilst Amber squealed about Camilla's hair being ruined.
Nina glanced at the twins with an amused smile. Since the curse on Fabian, she had taken a step back and observed them both and she finally understood why Camilla was the one person Fabian couldn't forget. They were mirrors of each other, similar in so many ways but with the odd difference to make them unique to themselves. Fabian didn't even need to look at Camilla as he stopped her from talking, his eyes trained on Nina, and Camilla didn't flinch or move – even though it was clear she could have stopped Fabian's arm if she wanted too. The love they had for one another was unquestionable. Nina even believed if the ancient Egyptian gods the two knew so much about even existed it could be argued the twins were gifted each other, because who else could have such a bond and have it make complete sense.
"it's like I can almost picture it, and then it's gone," Nina explained to Fabian as he willed her to continue with his eyes, fighting his sister who easily pushed his arm off her.
"One thing for sure. This place keeps getting weirder and weirder." Patricia said with knowing smile getting nods from everyone around the table.
"Wait, what day is today?" Nina asked them all suddenly.
"Tuesday," Patricia laughed at the question, "Why?"
"I'm meant to go visit gran with Trudy," Nina spoke in shock, "I almost forgot."
"You've had a lot on your mind," Fabian kindly reassured her, lowering his voice slightly as Joy and Mara entered the kitchen, "anyway if she knew the truth, she'd tell you to hurry up and get the mask and get yourself uncurse. Or else."
"I guess..." Nina agreed half-heartedly.
"Look, guys..." Fabian paused as he glanced at the two in the kitchen resulting in all the Sibuna's leaning in so they could hear his whisper's. "it's like the riddle said, whoever completes the task gets their hands on the mask." Fabian turned to Camilla, "Victor still has that Amulet, which we really need to get back." Fabian knew he was putting his sister in an uncomfortable position, he could read it from the micro-expressions on her face, but when it came to this, she had to choose a side as tough as it would be for her to choose one. Fabian sighed, "this could be our last one. Our final challenge."
Camilla pushed up from the table and smiled at Nina who was looking a bit better at the idea of their final challenge but still a little upset she had almost forgotten all about her gran. The female twin knew Fabian would stick around to comfort her a little more and she didn't need to be a third wheel, "grab me before you go with Trudy. I have a few things I think might help your gran out..." she told Nina who nodded her head at the girl with a smile. She might not know everything going on with Camilla but she was using the magic she had to help Nina out so she resorted to just accepting she would never know the full truth and be glad of the help.
A to-go cup of tea was thrust into Camilla's hands as Eddie grabbed Camilla and dragged her to her locker. "what is this for?!" she asked not complaining about the tea – because she would never – but more about the manhandling.
"I made you tea you've got to be nice to me now," Eddie told her simply as she raised her binder with her English notes in it and hit him as he opened his locker, "or not then."
"words, use them," Camilla asked as she leaned back against the locker next to him causing the American boy to look at her and laugh slightly.
"It's about Patricia,"
"I guessed..."
Eddie sighed, "she just seems... off... like there is something on her mind or something she is hiding from me."
Camilla bit her lip as she remembered Piper being in the house and knowing Patricia dealing with her twin along with Sibuna missions was probably taking up way more time than the girl wanted which was affecting Peddie. Eddie didn't like to admit he needed reassurance, but it was Camilla he was talking to now so he didn't mind showing that venerable side no one else but Patricia would see. Camilla and him somehow felt like a friendship written before either of them knew of each other. They just clicked, they worked, hell he was starting to see the girl as the annoying little sister he never knew he needed until now. The girl would never spill his secrets (hell she kept his dad a secret so well he didn't even know she knew).
"When it comes to Trish I can't say much as the girl is a firecracker," Camilla smiled causing Eddie to laugh. He didn't need Camilla to tell him that, part of her charm was her sarcasm, but it was the loyalty and the softer side he'd come to know that really had caused him to fall for the girl deeply. "Maybe you won't work out, but maybe seeing if you do will be your best adventure ever," she told him with a soft knowing smile.
Eddie glanced to Camilla at her simple but accurate words. Patricia, he knew deep down in his bones would always be his best adventure ever.
"Eddie!" the hiss of Jerome caused Eddie to look from Camilla and back to his locker. Jerome and his friendship was an odd one he could admit that to himself, mainly due to the small girl who was stood next to him sipping on the takeaway tea trying hard not to pull a face as she drank it. Clearly, he hadn't mastered the art of Camilla's tea just yet – but hey he was American their tea came cold and coffee was always the better drink of choice in his opinion anyway. He felt he should get points for trying. "Do you have the quick notes for French?" Jerome asked as he approached the locker.
"Yeah," Eddie bluntly said glancing to Camilla, who suddenly was very interested in her phone. Since the Mara fake-dating thing, the tension between Jerome and Camilla was clear to all. It was simple, Camilla pretended to ignore him, and Jerome acted like he didn't notice. Unknown to everyone but the two, they were each other's priority. Eddie put his hand into his locker and handed Jerome whatever he first picked up as he made sure Camilla was okay. The small smile the girl shot him was enough to tell him she was.
"Something on your mind?" Jerome's words caused the two to look around at him to see that Eddie had handed him his emergency sandwiches, not the French notes he had copied from Amber – after many holidays there she was practically fluent.
Eddie scoffed at Jerome's words like he was going to tell him his issues.
"Oh, come on, I'm not all bad," Jerome told him, causing the smallest of small smiles to creep onto Camilla's face at his words. Jerome glancing down at her at that moment and noticing it. He wasn't sure what he had done to cause Camilla to keep him at arm's length over the last few days but clearly, he was worming his way back in. "Try me." He spoke again looking back to Eddie.
Eddie glanced to Camilla and saw her smile, and with a look on his face as if he couldn't believe he was going to tell Jerome his issues he spoke up, "well, me and Patricia went on this date the other night."
"and it was a romantic disaster?" Jerome nodded his head knowingly, letting out a laugh, "there's a surprise."
"no, the date was fine." Eddie told him bluntly, "it's just after we didn't..." he trailed off. "we didn't... kiss."
Jerome looked slightly sad for the boy for a second before he went back to being Jerome, "but I thought you were one of those super cool, confident, piece of cake kind of guys."
"Eh, thanks." Eddie sarcastically replied to Jerome's teasing, once again realising why this was why he went to Camilla for advice over a guy. His reputation was whatever with him, she teased it all the same but didn't question him for having it there as a way to protect himself, but when he spoke about his feelings in an honest way, she never teased him about them. She let him have and feel his emotions and it was a small thing he really appreciated about her friendship.
"Well, would you look at the time? As fun as this hurricane of toxic masculinity is, I have to get to my extra-curricular class," Camilla spoke up causing a grateful smile to appear on Eddie's face at her distraction. Camilla pushed off the locker and pushed through them both, waving her fingers at Eddie as a goodbye before heading down the corridor.
"I don't know," Eddie spoke to Jerome as Camilla stopped to talk to Patricia down the corridor who was eating a packet of crisps. Both boys watching the girls, "she's...different. I've never felt like this for a girl." Jerome allowed himself to take in Eddie's words, but he wasn't focused on Patricia he was looking to the small girl next to her who laughed at something her friend said before twirling slightly before racing down the corridor and out of sight – timekeeping was never her strong point and he was sure she'd be late to her own wedding. Jerome felt something in him feel odd and disgusted at the idea of Camilla getting married to some faceless stranger. He didn't know why but he didn't like the idea at all.
"Being with her, it just makes sense," Eddie added slightly, before looking back to Jerome.
Of course, Jerome had to be Jerome and though he was battling his own inner turmoil over why he didn't like the mental image he had conjured up, that didn't mean he was going to miss a chance to tease Eddie, "okay... then here is what you do, my American friend," Eddie crossed his arms expectantly waiting to hear this magical advice of Jerome's. "the next time you're with her, you're going to plant a big fat smackroo right on those luscious lips!"
"You think so?"
"Yeah... everything bar luscious..." Jerome told him feeling slightly uneasy he had spoken about Patricia that way.
Eddie thought over Jerome's words, he had honestly expected worse advice and this way he got his kiss so..., "alright... yeah..."
"Where are you going?" Jerome asked as Eddie moved past him down the hallway, "French is that way..."
"oh, I've been to class all morning." Eddie told him with a smirk, "I'm pulling a Camilla and going to be anywhere but that class." He told the boy with a salute before wandering into the study hall to claim a couch to have a nap on.
Victor seemed in a slightly cheerful mood when Camilla wandered into the lab, the girl pulling out her grimoire and throwing it onto the table for him to look through. He had been doing that during the lessons to see what she felt important knowledge for her learning. Camilla then wandered back to the potion making set up as she wanted to focus on finding a solution for Nina's gran.
Victor broke the silence between the two with a bemused smile looking down at the book, "I'm beginning to realise we're a lot alike, me and you," he said causing the girl to look up from the bowl she had been chanting softly over. At her questioning gaze he added, "For a teenage girl, you're not as annoying as I thought you'd be," this caused Camilla to roll her eyes, before picking up the bowl and putting it behind her to let it sit for 48 hours.
"Actually, I was hoping to talk to you about something..." Camilla spoke up quietly, turning back to see Victor looking at her questioningly. "what do you know about the Bond of Old." Victor's reaction was something she hadn't expected. A few emotions flitted across his face but the two that shocked her the most was the worry and one she could only put down as realisation.
"There is a theory on it..." Victor spoke softly, closing Camilla's grimoire and pushing it towards the girl as she wandered over to him and sat down opposite him. "so, don't take this to heart but it was a name often referred to the bond between a Mage and a Pharaoh,"
Camilla frowned as Victor rambled on her thoughts going to the many many questions what did that mean when it came to her and Fabian? What did the spirit mean? Or was this just some big ploy to confuse her because she was protected by her Deity?
The questions plagued Camilla even as she and Victor walked back to Anubis house together. Amber, Fabian and Nina looking up as Camilla walked into the girl's bedroom all of them giving her smiles as she settled herself down on her bed, throwing her bookbag onto her desk chair leaving the homework inside it to do the next day.
"This is so annoying," Amber spoke up from the open dollhouse, "I spent a very long time making sure all the figures have a job to do while we're in school..." Nina glanced to Fabian as the pair did their homework causing him to let out a soft chuckle. "but then, when I open it up, they have all moved!" Amber re-opened the doll's house and opened her mouth in awe, "I don't think it was Alfie anymore."
This caused them all to glance at her before looking to the dollhouse to see all the figures were stood in Victor's office.
"It's Sarah," Nina spoke as she raced over to the dollhouse the twins following behind her to get a better look, "she's trying to tell us something."
"They are all in Victor's office," Camilla pointed out.
"Why there?" Fabian asked for her.
Nina gasped before looking at her friends, "remember... at breakfast! You asked for a clue for where the objects would be." She grabbed Fabian's hand.
"Victor's office," he replied excitedly.
Now a clue was one thing, what the object could be was a whole other story its self even with 3 of them hunting and Amber on lookout they had no clue what they were looking for, all they had to go on was the symbol of Horus.
"Hurry up guys!" Amber cried once again, not wanting any of her friends to be caught in the office. "we are looking for something shiny..."
Camilla looked up from the desk and gave her friend an unamused look, Fabian had an identical look to his sister as he hissed, "that could be anything!"
"If the dollhouse says it in here..." Nina trailed off as the twins glared at her. This was a mission that was doomed to fail.
"I hear someone coming!" Amber squealed in panic causing them all to go running from the room and to the noticeboard where they had already come up with a reason for why they were stood out there.
Victor smiled at Camilla as he whistled softly on his way up the stairs, the girl clearly looking bored. Amber once again must have been fighting for changing the chore list so she didn't have to do the washing up – or that's what he assumed.
"see, it is your turn to do the washing up Fabian." Amber loudly spoke pointing to the list.
"It can't be I did them last night..."
"Oh, did you not get the memo, I swapped you and Cam so she is on breakfast with Jerome tomorrow." Amber sweetly said causing Nina to let out a giggle as Camilla turned to look at her friend with wide eyes.
Victor chuckled softly as he passed Camilla to go into his office, causing the girl to turn to look at him and roll her eyes. The man would get some enjoyment over her panicking about something as petty (in his eyes) as setting the table and helping Vera with breakfast along with her crush.
Due to Trudy's absence, Jasper had called upon the twins to help out with the exhibition for the night, promising payment which meant Camilla was more than happy to let her annoying knowledge she had had implanted into her brain since birth, Fabian not being able to help due to the fact Amber had swapped his chores with Camilla's and he was now on the washing up.
Camilla looked around from the ladder she was on, Jasper had her categorizing books back to their correct order, as Jasper spoke up, "Ah Jerome, it can't be many more shifts left before you paid your debt to that Detective..."
Jerome glanced at Camilla who sent him an amused smile as she climbed down the stairs. He knew she found it highly amusing he was determined to pay her back for paying off his debt, and what she found even more amusing was the fact he refused to tell Jasper he was actually paying back his family. "oh well eh," Jerome pushed back his jacket sleeve to look at his watch, "four hours forty-five minutes and fifty-two seconds... but who's counting?"
Jasper let out an amused laugh as Camilla wandered over to them, "well you will be taking over from Camilla then, as her shift is now over," he picked up some books and handed it to the boy.
"We are doing a book inventory..." Camilla told the boy the fake fascination on the subject not missed on either man causing Jerome to grin at Camilla. The girl followed her uncle to his desk and picked up her jacket which she had put on the back of his chair as Jasper handed some books from the desk to Jerome.
"what's that?" Jerome and Camilla curiously spoke together pointing to a letter on the desk.
Jasper let out an unsure grunt before picking it up and opening it, unfolding the letter to read the contents, "it's a letter from Trudy," he told the pair, "it explains her absence..."
"Jasper, could I... please?"
Jasper looked at him before handing over the letter, "let me walk you to the door Camilla," Her uncle turned to her with a warm smile, and the girl knew she had to leave. As she did, she heard Jerome read the letter out loud.
"Dear Jasper had to leave suddenly. Everything fine – just needed to look after my nieces and their pets for a while (my brother broke his leg). Make sure you give everyone my regards. Yours Trudy."
As the library door shut behind her Camilla couldn't help but feel a wave of something wash over her. Something about that letter didn't sit right with her and she didn't know why.
