Chapter 2:
Andy bought 1 box of tests (2 in the box) and a bottle of water.
They were still on shift for 3 more hours… She told Sam they could wait but he drove to her apartment (so she would be more comfortable) and told dispatch they were out on a personal for 30 minutes and walked her into her apartment.
Inside Andy took off her belt, vest and shoes and told Sam he could too if he wanted and to make himself comfortable.
She took her box and her water and went into her bathroom.
Andy sat down on the side of the tub and read the directions. Three times.
Andy had been gone for 10 minutes already… He had to check on her.
"Andy, you.. uh… you okay?"
"I…" She opened the door and told him, "I can't look. I did both of the tests and it said to wait and I did but I haven't looked yet. What if they're positive?"
"Then you're going to be a mom." Sam said with a supportive hand finding her shoulder.
Her lip trembled… "a…. mom…?"
"Yes… that's usually how that goes… unless I mean unless you don't want to be, you have other um options too."
Andy thought of that already too. Adoption was out because if she saw a mini piece of her in no way would or could she give it to strangers. And Abortion, while legal, just seemed like something she couldn't do but might need to consider discussing with Luke if she is actually pregnant. She just feels like he is going to hate this.
She was quiet too long.
"Andy, you need to look and that will reduce some stress because you will know one way or the other and you can make one of your plans that you love to make."
She takes a big breath and grabs his hand and intertwines their fingers. She pulls him into the bathroom with her and turns towards the counter.
Sam sees that both tests have 2 solid pink lines instantly. She's pregnant with Luke Callaghan's child.
Andy still hasn't looked, she noticed her and Sam in the mirror and got distracted by the thought of them doing this together.
She looks.
"Oh." Is all she says.
"Andy… I need more than oh. Are you alright?"
She is gripping his hand and her eyebrows are furrowed but she isn't crying or moving. She is just staring at one of the positive pregnancy tests that will affect her life forever.
Sam turns her towards him. "Andy. Are you alright?"
She swallows. "I um… now I know."
"yep, and how are you feeling about it?"
She pulls her hand from his and runs her hands up her face and into her hair and then down her pony tail.
"That is a difficult question right now Sam. I …this… I'm not sure."
Sam nods. "That is completely normal. But I am here for you and you will be okay. Okay?"
Andy is loving his words but realizes this is not the man who should be saying that. This is not the man who got her pregnant. This is not the man she still has to tell… or does she not have to tell him? She is so confused right now.
"Sam?"
"Yeah Andy?"
"Do I … do I?" she licks her lips and tries again, "Do I have to tell Luke?" she asks softly.
Sam's eyebrows shoot up! "Um… well… he uh… I mean… is he?"
"Yes. He is." She knows he wasn't being disrespectful it was just the way she had phrased it.
"Then, as a man in general, I would think yes. I would want to know."
She sighs.
"But… as your friend… I think you have to do what your gut tells you. You said you were afraid of how he would react. Do you think he would hurt you? Or what are you afraid of here?"
She pulls him to the couch leaving the tests just sitting on the counter.
"I don't know honestly. I mean no I don't think he would physically hurt me but if he doesn't want to have it that might hurt me or on the flip side if he does want to and I don't want to that might hurt me or him. I'm just still not sure how I feel… so im wondering if it is okay to wait to tell him…"
"I think whatever your gut tells you is what is right. Breathe Andy and listen to your gut."
"Thanks Sam."
"Anytime, McNally. I'm gonna be here for you… that's uh… that's what friends are for right?" He was so out of his comfort zone but he did want to be there for her.
She smiled and nodded.
"Let's get back to work then."
And off they went for the last 2 and a half hours of shift.
