Maxwell was laying on the floor, blood everywhere. For a second, Fran and CC thought he passed out, or worse…until he cried in agony.
"Why would you do a thing like this! Maxwell!" CC said, trying to find the source of the bleeding.
"I didn't. I was throwing things around and I accidently cut myself. UGHH," He cried again. He was obviously drinking.
"The cuts too deep, we need to take him to the hospital for stitches." She said,
Fran was crying, "Oh, my god Max, for a second I thought…" She cried again,
"Fran, it's alright, he's going to be fine, it's just a hand injury. He'll be alright." 'dumbass' she thought.
Maxwell broke down in tears, "CC, I'm sorry. I'm sorry…" he kept repeating over and over.
CC sighed. Roller her eyes in anger. After wrapping a towel around his hand, she placed a hand on his face, lifting it, forcing him to look at her. "Listen, I know. Do you hear me Maxwell, I know you are. Pull yourself together, the children are still in the house. You don't want to frighten them," she let go of him. Letting his face hit the ground.
"Maxwell…" She hated that she was feeling sorry for him. She hated that she couldn't bring herself to hate him. He didn't deserve sympathy. And yet, she couldn't help but give it to him. Not because she once had feelings for him, but because he was once a very good friend. A friend who trusted her enough to share half of his company with her. A friend she once thought she had feelings for, until the unfortunate event. She laid down next to him, lifted his chin up to face her again.
"Look at me Maxwell. I may not be able to forgive you yet…but…one day I will. All we need is time. Do you understand? You're not a bad person. I know you are not. The children know you're not. Like you said, you are not the villain. You just did something very stupid…but you can't take that back. You have to own your shit Maxwell."
"They looked at me like they…feared me." He said, "And I…took something from the both of you. I don't deserve them. I don't deserve your friendship. I'm so sorry."
"They weren't afraid of you Maxwell. They were afraid of the truth. We were all in shock. I don't know if they've forgiven you or when they will forgive you, but what I do know is that they love you. They will always love you."
She wiped the tears off his face while helping him sit up. Fran had left them alone feeling she would ruin the scene. She closed the door and left to check on the kids.
CC gave him a few minutes to pull himself together.
She looked at him, staring at the bruise she gave him the day before. "I'm sorry I punched you."
He was staring at the floor, numb. "I deserved it. And more."
"That's very true. But I still am sorry."
"You punch hard by the way. I'm surprised you didn't knock me out."
She chuckled. "Self defense class my father put me in for my sweet 16. Kept going ever since."
"Do you think Niles will ever forgive me?"
"If I'm able to forgive you one day, I'm sure he will one day too. You two have known each other since childhood."
"That's why I feel worse about it. I've always used him, made him clean my messes, every time I wanted something, he would always be the one to do it because I demanded it. And this is no different. I wanted a child and he unknowingly gave me one. I stole that from him. From you. I knew he wanted children someday, and I did it anyway."
CC sighed. She knew he was right. It would hurt Niles more than it hurt her. Although she did see a future with a husband and children, she knew Niles wanted that more than her. She wanted them because society made her think she needed them. He wanted a family because he wanted them.
"Perhaps. But he has a great heart, and very forgiving. As much as he annoys the hell out of me, even I know how sweet that man can be. And I know how much he cares for you."
"He cares for you too, CC."
They were silent for a while. Maxwell took his other hand, the one that had no cut, and took CC's. She laid her head on his shoulder.
"I think you're too drunk to go to the hospital. I'll call a friend, he's a doctor."
"Niles knows how to stitch."
"Of course that Dust mop knows how to stitch." She said unsurprised. They both chuckled.
Fran came back, and this time she stayed with him, while CC fetched Niles for the little surgery he had to do. This was also the first time the children were alone with CC after the incident. Sure she was alone with Grace, but alone with all of them in Fran's room?
"Is he ok Ms. Babcock?" Maggie asked, as they were all sitting down on the side of the bed closer to the door, they were holding hands, with Maggie in the middle.
She nodded. "He'll be physically ok, just need a couple of stitches. As for his mental health…he's better than he was an hour ago. I promise."
Maggie nodded. CC was standing by the door, not knowing what to do. She felt out of place.
Gracie placed her hand on the mattress patting it, as if to tell CC to sit next to her. She did. Gracie took her hand and CC accepted.
"I told him the truth. One day I'll forgive him. He may have done a terrible thing, but something good came out of it. Gracie. And we all have to remember that." She squeezed Gracie's hand.
They smiled. "And no matter what Gracie is our sister, right?" Maggie said, giving CC a hopeful look.
CC nodded, "Of course! You will always have each other. Do you understand? The memories you have together changes nothing. And there will be new memories to comes. I'm not going to take her away from you two, nor from Nanny Fine. I know I may not be the nicest person in the world…but I'm not cruel. I promise."
"We know Ms. Babcock. If you were you would've killed Niles a long time ago." Brighton said, they all laughed.
There was a knock at the door, it was Niles, popping his head open, "I came to check if the children are still alive. I know we haven't had lunch yet Babs, but I'm here to remind you that children are not food."
CC gave him a dirty look and the children laughed again.
"Speaking of lunch, I'd say we order pizza, what do you all say?" CC asked
"yeah!" they all screamed in excitement.
Fran and the children where eating in the living room eating pizza, while Niles and CC decided to have a talk. They haven't really had time to talk at all. Mostly because they were both ignoring it, as they didn't want to face reality.
"How was he?"
"I wouldn't know. I didn't talk to him. How could I Ms. Babcock, the man took advantage of us. He knew I wanted children someday. He manipulated us. Do you see that? Or are your feelings for him not letting you see that?"
"I don't have feelings for him! At least I thought I did before, but now I know he just infuriates me. He's just not doing well right now and I don't want to make it worse. He's not taking this well."
They were both in the office, Niles leaning against the side of the desk while CC sat down on her usually spot. The green couch she loved to hate.
"So you forgive him…just like that."
"No. I—Niles he was laying in a pool of blood, drunk, crying like a baby. He looked like…like he was about to do something stupid."
"So you give him pity."
"I don't want to lose him too Niles." She said in a low voice, as she stood up taking a few steps closer to Niles.
Niles looked away, shaking his head.
she sighed. "When I read the letter, what angered me the most was the fact that they didn't even try to ask when they planned it. They were thinking about it before the crash, why couldn't she ask me before that happened?"
"well for starters, they didn't know you were going to be in a crash."
"That trip was weeks before that happened."
Niles thought for a second. "They knew you would say no. Knowing you."
"That's just it Niles. I-I…"
"You would've said yes?" he asked surprised.
She looked away. "I would've done anything for her. She was like a sister to me, Niles. What hurts the most was the fact that she didn't know me like I thought she did. She should've known I would've done it. But she decided not to and just went and did it. That was a stab in the back." She started to cry. "I thought we were close enough to tell each other everything. That hurts more than them keeping Gracie a secret. Because Sara in a way let me be in her life without me knowing too much. What's done is done, and we can't do anything about it. And you and I both know that if they didn't do what they did, Grace wouldn't be here."
"You have your reasons, and I have mine."
"If you decide not to forgive him, I'll respect that. I won't push you two to make up. But Niles, you still have your best friend, you can tell him you forgive him, I know you. One day you will. I can't. She died feeling like she betrayed me. And I'll have to live with that now."
"If she knew you, she'd know you would've. I think that's why she decided to leave the letter under the couch, because she hoped you'd find it first, she knew you'd be the first to forgive. Probably didn't know you would also punch her husband, though."
She sat on the corner of the desk.
"You know we've been spending a lot of time on how angry we are with them for doing such a thing. We haven't really done much talking about the child."
"That's because I've been ignoring the fact that she has both our blood. I think I still am in shock."
"ditto."
"We need to talk with her. I want to get to know her in a new light."
"Niles you basically raised her,"
"Yes but…she'll never see me as a father. She already has one. She grew up believing that. She'll always see me as a butler."
"She has never seen you as just a butler. No one here does. You're part of the family and you know it. And many people have more than one father."
"Part of a family. Not family. That's why I'm not talking to him. I'll always be part of a family and never have my own. He took that from me."
"Who says you'll never have your own?"
"I lost hope a long time ago."
CC started laughing. "You're such a drama queen,"
He gave her a dirty look.
"look dust mop, it may take some time, but one day she'll see you in this light you were talking about. Probably already does. One day she may even call you mom," she laughed.
"Very funny." He said sarcastically.
"Look I don't know what's going to happen, but we can work on it one day at a time."
"Alright Yoda, since when did you become so wise and sentimental?"
"Since I realized I may have a chance of having my own family. That little girl is something special, and I am not going to waste any time feeling angry all the time over something we can't take back. I'm going to spend it with our daughter."
"our daughter…we have a daughter." That was when CC realized that it had finally hit him.
"Did it finally go through your thick ass head?"
"I just…it hit me awhile ago but… I never really put it all together until now."
"That she was also mine? That the child in the living room lives because of us? Well with the help of Bonnie and Clyde." Then it hit her too. Her eyes widened.
"Who has a thick head now?" He smirked.
She walked to the bookshelf next to the couch opened the glass door and took a small bottle of vodka from the back of the books. She sat down on the couch.
He didn't question why there was a bottle of vodka hiding in the bookshelf. He sat down next to her and sighed. He turned to her and noticed smudge of blood on her chin. He reached without thinking to wipe it off. She flinched.
"You have blood on you. I won't bite, just let me wipe it off."
"I thought I cleaned it off. He ruined my blazer. Won't let him ruin my life. If I let anger take over, it'll ruin me." She took a sip of the bottle. Niles took it and took the bottle from her and chugged.
"Do you mean me?"
She took back the bottle from him. "Decide you." She said mocking Yoda. Niles laughed.
"I didn't know you were such a nerd." They both laughed as they leaned back.
"To our daughter," She raised the bottle as if to toast, then passing the bottle to Niles.
"To our daughter," he said, as he took it, raised the bottle and took a sip.
They were quiet for a few minutes.
"We're so screwed up." She took another sip.
He chuckled. "Least we can be screw ups together."
"I'd toast to that too, but we finished the bottle." She laughed. She turned to him, noticing him glaring at her. "What?"
He leaned in closer, placing his hand on her cheek, leaning closer as she leaned close enough for their noses to touch.
"We're drunk." She whispered.
"are we really?"
"No." She grabbed him by the collar pulling him closer to kiss him hungrily.
He wrapped his arms around her lifting her up so that she would be on top of him. She helped him take off his suit jacket off while not breaking the kiss, then he started unbutton her shirt, as he started kissing her chin, then her neck, going down to the top of her breasts, CC took off her shirt, while he lifted up her skirt to find her panties, tugging them down to her thighs, he lifted her up again, getting up carrying her, pushing off the office supplies off the desk as he placed her on top of the desk, then finally taking off her panties and throwing them to the floor. Kissing her furiously, while lifting her skirt again as she wrapped on leg around him. She started working on his belt while he unzipped his pants. She wrapped her other leg around him and pulled him back into a kiss.
Then there was a knock. Then the door opened.
"Are you two Oooo—OH MY GOD!"
