Writer's Note: Based on the 1993 SEGA CD video game, Sonic fights to save Little Planet from the clutches of Doctor Robotnik and meets Amy Rose. Warning: Small Classic SonAmy Romance.
It had been a month since the Death Egg crisis was taken care of and Sonic was taking a much, well-deserved break. Tails was off at a plane convention, especially since he loved planes, so Sonic was by himself.
Robotnik had not made a move or a sound in a while, this meant that he was licking his wounds from his last defeat and had somewhat learned his lesson. But something told Sonic he hadn't heard the last of the doctor.
Sonic was resting on a grassy hillside just outside a human city, minding his own business, he hoped to have a nice few weeks off before looking for his next adventure, but today had much different plans for him.
Before the hedgehog could blink, a newspaper flew into his face and he was about to throw it out when an article got his attention, it was about Little Planet, that appeared over Never Lake once a year.
"Little Planet, huh? Never lake?" Sonic questioned, "I like it, let's go see this." Rising to his feet, the potbellied black-eyed hedgehog dashed off, running as fast as the wind and as fast as his legs could carry him.
He ran across watery ponds, ran through canyons and over hills, sped through loop de loops and jumped over cliffs, all while looking for Never Lake until he seemed to spot it in the distance.
When Sonic arrived, he was in for the biggest surprise of his life: a huge metal ball with chains attached to it, floating in the sky and the chains connected to rocks surrounding the lake.
Pondering what was going on, the speedster quickly noticed a familiar face etched into a rock. "Eggman!" Sonic grunted, it was obvious that Robotnik was up to no good again and had taken over Little Planet.
Always ready for action, the fastest thing alive jumped up on one of the nearby rocks and raced up the chain at light speed, all the way towards Little Planet, encased in the big metal ball...
-Action Stage: Palmtree Panic Zone-
Upon seeing the lush, Green Hill-like landscape of Palmtree Panic, Sonic was nearly breath taken by its beauty until he spotted Robotnik's Badniks in the area, noting that it felt as if the doctor had been here for a while.
With full understanding of what to do, the speedster made his way through the environment, smashing robots and freeing critters as he went. Things got crazy when Sonic passed by a sign post that read: Past.
The world around him seemed to suddenly shift and distort until Sonic found himself standing in a different version of Palmtree Panic, what it looked like IN THE PAST! Time Travel was possible here? No way!
If there was one thing that was different about it, there was a bit less robots here and Sonic could see a machine close by, it looked like a real portable roboticizer. Would destroying it make a difference?
Not even having second doubts, Sonic ran up and smashed the machine, watching as flowers started blooming. A shiny blue object fell out and the hedgehog caught it, was that a Chaos Emerald?
He shook his head, that was impossible, the Chaos Emeralds were scattered somewhere else. This had to be one of the legendary Time Stones and, if Sonic was correct, there were three or four lying around Little Planet.
Putting away the blue Time Stone for safekeeping, Sonic proceeded onward through Palmtree Panic IN THE PAST and soon walked by a signpost which, this time, read the words: Future!
Another change of scenery and Sonic was back in the present day of the area, seeing more plant life and trees, more blooming flowers. Plus, there were LESS robots. 'I made a good future,' The hedgehog thought.
Sonic was just running through more of Palmtree Panic and passing by some rocks when he ran right into someone he never expected to see: A pink hedgehog wearing a green shirt and an orange skirt.
"Hi," The female hedgehog said with a giggle.
"Uh, hey there?" Sonic replied sheepishly.
"I'm Amy Rose," Amy introduced, "And you're Sonic."
"I take it you're a fan of mine."
Amy playfully bopped his nose, "Not just that, I'm your future girlfriend."
"Future girlfriend?" Sonic was confused.
His new friend pulled out some cards and showed it to him, "The tarot cards say we're eventual destined lovers and that we would meet here on Little Planet, I've been here a while, waiting for you."
"Sounds like you're willing to follow me anywhere."
"That's true, besides you're a handsome hero and we're meant to be, you're a hedgehog and I'm a hedgehog. We would make an ideal couple."
Before Sonic knew it, Amy was hugging him, smiling happily. Heck, they'd just met and the hedgehog was a bit creeped out by what was going on. 'Oh dear.' Sonic thought nervously.
"Ok, sounds life changing, but I gotta go." The speedster said quickly, pushing the pink hedgehog off him, before racing off at lightspeed across the landscape, blasting through remaining Robotnik Badniks.
It wasn't very long before Sonic came face to face with the mad doctor himself for the first time in a long time, as the hedgehog arrived in a clearing, a huge two-legged robot made its appearance, piloted by...
"Ah, Sonic the Hedgehog." Doctor Robotnik mused, a sinister smile upon his mustached face, "Its been a while hasn't it, due to how time works on Little Planet, you could say it feels like years."
"Fancy running into you, Eggman." Sonic retorted, "Ya got a lotta guts for a mad scientist, especially if you're gonna take over this place as part of some evil plan to build your own sick and twisted utopia."
"STOP CALLING ME THAT DREADFUL NAME!" Robotnik slammed his fists on the control console near some levers, "Also, yes, I intend to turn Little Planet into ROBOTNIKLAND… with HELP FROM THE TIME STONES!"
"Getting the Chaos Emeralds is crazy enough, but going after the Time Stones is a whole new level of insanity, even when time travel is involved. Guess what, doc? I'm gonna put a stop to that."
"Why don't you give it a try, pincushion? Oh ho ho ho!" Robotnik cackled and began working with the levers and buttons on his new battle mech. The RBCD Robo Chicken advanced, its shield arms raised.
The battle-ready Sonic charged and launched a homing attack in an attempt to hit the Eggman, only for Robotnik to raise shields and bounce Sonic back. Thankfully, the hedgehog didn't get hurt.
Quickly formulating a new strategy, Sonic ran at the mech and spin-dashed under the legs, positioning himself behind the RBCD-1993 and rammed into the mech's bottom, launching a series of attacks on it until...
POW! Robotnik's mech crumbled, leaving only the doctor in his Egg Mobile as he flew off. "You won't stop me again, Sonic." Robotnik declared, "Once I have full control of the Time Stones, Robotnikland will become reality!"
Sonic gave chase after his nemesis like he always did, soon leaving Palmtree Panic behind like everywhere else, the world around him blurred as he ran at lightspeed until he came to a new, terrifying location...
-Action Stage: Tidal Tempest-
Even after going through Labyrinth Zone on South Island, Sonic was still afraid of water and almost reluctant when he arrived at this place, looking out over large pools of water from atop a ledge.
Yet, the hedgehog had no choice, he had to press on and save Little Planet. He couldn't let people down, taking a deep breath. Sonic dove into the water and began fighting Badniks as best he could.
Whenever he felt his air was running low, the speedster would quickly find an air bubble and take in as much air and bubbles as he could. The water felt cold, probably because of Robotnik's meddling with everything.
Sonic found another "Past" signpost which warped him back to before Robotnik ruined the cavernous, aquatic location's peace. Once in the past, the hedgehog trashed another robo-maker and got another Time Stone.
The Time Stone he got was a red one, fascinating that these gemstones, like the Chaos Emeralds, varied in color. The hedgehog found a Future Signpost hidden in a cave which warped him back to the present.
Upon returning to the present, Sonic was amazed to find warm water (despite his still-present aquaphobia) and much less Badniks to worry about. But, there was still the doctor to worry about.
And speaking of Robotnik...
Sonic made his way into a humongous underwater area full of statues and rocks everywhere, as he looked for a way up to the surface, he was in for a surprise when the doc returned... in a big, oval-shaped submarine.
"Whatcha think of my Rrrrobotnik Sub, rrrrodent?" Robotnik purred, rolling his r's menacingly. "Nice one, Eggman." Sonic retorted through gritted teeth, talking underwater was somewhat hard.
Berating the hedgehog for calling him 'Eggman' again, Robotnik launched his attack, sending torpedoes at Sonic and trying to blow him to pieces. Sonic caught on and evaded, jumping off a statue and lunging at his nemesis.
In spite of the gravity underwater, the hedgehog managed to get some damage off Robotnik's submarine and completely wreck it to pieces, watching as the villainous villain retreated.
Sonic climbed his way out of the water onto dry land, drying himself off with a towel he conveniently found lying around, before taking off at high speed and pursuing Robotnik once more.
-Action Stage: Collision Chaos-
Sonic was breath taken by the lush forest-y scenery of the area and surprised to find that there were casinos here too, Collision Chaos seemed to be a Green Hill-Casino Night hybrid. Did Robotnik or someone else do this?
Just as he was about to go looking for the doc, the hedgehog was in for a surprise when he ran right into none other than Amy Rose... again! "Found you, my future darling." Amy said teasingly.
Before the hedgehog could say something, a wall exploded and something robotic raced forward and snatched up Amy. "AH!" She wailed, "SONIC! HELP! AHHHHHHH!" The hedgehog got a glimpse of Amy's kidnapper...
It was unbelievable, the robot looked just like HIM! This was NOTHING next to Silver Sonic, this shiny new, blue robot with red eyes and properly shaped like him was a completely new brand of beast.
The new Sonic robot flew off with Amy in its arms and Sonic gave chase, not knowing what was going on. Just then, just as the hedgehog reached an area full of bumpers and bingo machines, his old nemesis appeared...
Robotnik descended, piloting what looked like a UFO with casino-y decorations on it. This was obviously what Sonic would call an Egg Jackpot, the words etched on the side of the mech confirmed it; Robo-Jackpot.
"What did you think of my new Metal Sonic, meddlesome fool?" Robotnik cackled, looking down at Sonic with villainous glee and telling the hedgehog what the name of the new robot was.
"So, ya made a new robo-clone?" Sonic remarked, "Looks like your robo Sonic making standards have improved since Silver Sonic, I'm impressed Eggman. But you can't get away with kidnappin', Amy!"
"I already just kidnapped her, oh ho ho! AND WOULD YOU QUIT CALLING ME, EGGMAN! I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF THAT NAME, I AM DOCTOR ROBOTNIK! RO-BOT-NIK! I'll make sure to shut you up, Sonic!"
A hatch opened under the Robo-Jackpot and a barrel surrounded by electricity dropped out, Sonic leaped up onto a casino lever just as the electric bomb exploded and an electric wave spread across the ground.
Right before he fell off the casino lever, Sonic bounced off it and began attacking the Robo-Jackpot, smashing it until it fell apart, causing Robotnik to drop a YELLOW Time Stone before retreating.
Picking up the Time Stone, Sonic gave chase, knowing that he not only had to stop the doctor and save Little Planet, but save Amy Rose from the clutches of his own new metal doppelganger.
-Action Stage: Stardust Speedway-
-Boss Race: Robot Doppelganger Metal Sonic-
No sooner than he reached the mysterious, yet almost lovely, Stardust Speedway, full of ancient scenery, a huge and winding road and a city in the distance, Sonic was almost reminded of Star Light Zone on South Island.
If anything reminded Sonic of that, it was the starry sky and the city scenery. But this was not the time to respect the beauty of this, he had to save Amy and defeat Robotnik.
Sonic ran through Stardust Speedway, plowing through Badniks ranging from Moto Bugs to Buzz Bombers and Mosquito Bots, ducking under giant hammers to avoid getting crushed and jumping over spike pits.
Before long, Sonic found himself on a racetrack that stretched out for almost miles and, before he knew it, he found Metal Sonic waiting for him near what appeared to be a starting gate.
"There you are, metal me." Sonic remarked, "Looks like trashing you is gonna be fun." Metal said nothing, he only stood and suddenly lagged his finger, almost attempting to mimic the real blue hedgehog.
"Oh ho ho ho!" Robotnik laughed excitedly as he came down in his Egg Mobile, which seemed to have some sort of laser cannon on its undercarriage, "Are we ready to race, Sonic?"
"What the...?" Sonic raised an eyebrow, "I'm racing Metal Sonic?"
"Right as rain, Sonic!" Robotnik remarked, "Amy is at the finish line, if you beat Metal, you can have Amy. If you lose, Amy and Little Planet are mine."
"What a joke, Eggman!" The hedgehog laughed, "Everybody knows how this is gonna end, let's do it to it." He got into a racer starting position, revving up his legs in a figure eight as Metal Sonic's engines glowed.
Robotnik counted down, his finger over a button. "GO!" He said and pressed the button that opened up the starting gate. Sonic got a head start and ran along the raceway at high speed, Metal Sonic was right behind him.
The fastest thing alive ran at top speed, trying to stay ahead of his robotic counterpart, who was trying as fast as it could to keep up with the real deal and fulfill his master's programming of beating Sonic!
Sonic went through a loop-de-loop and accelerated his speed, trying to go even more faster well beyond his limit even with Metal struggling to keep up, the scene was passing in a blur, everything feeling bright and colorful.
Right behind the two racers, Robotnik was following, burning the path behind them with his Egg Burner device as rays of fiery laser beams came down and obliterated the road.
Sonic ran faster, seeing the finish line just ahead. He looked behind himself, noticing that Metal Sonic seemed to be closing in fast, attempting to take the lead and finish the race before the real Sonic.
Focusing all his strength, Sonic reached the finish line and stopped to watch as the gate closed and Metal Sonic crashed into it, smashing to pieces and falling off a ledge as an angry Robotnik screamed with rage.
"MY ROBOT!" The doctor yelled, "You'll pay for this, Sonic!" Sonic watched as Robotnik flew off, declaring his hatred of the speedster again. The hedgehog noticed Amy tied up to a post close by, waiting for him.
Relishing with pride that he'd just beaten another robot doppelganger, Sonic approached the tied up pink hedgehog and untied the ropes, freeing her. "Oh, Sonic! I knew you'd save me," Amy said happily.
Expressing her gratitude, the pink hedgehog kissed Sonic on the cheek and he blushed before hugging her right back. "Get to safety, I'll handle the rest." He instructed, Amy nodded and headed elsewhere.
Before he left to pursue Robotnik, Sonic noticed a gray Time Stone lying next to the rope that bounded Amy and picked up the stone, obtaining his fourth and (possibly) final Time Stone, before racing off...
-Final Zone: Metal Madness-
When Sonic arrived at Metal Madness, the place quickly reminded him of Scrap Brain and Metropolis Zone, due to its advanced robotic utopian and dystopian feel and the fact it was swarming with Robotnik robots.
Lightning flashed across a cloudy sky and illuminated the shadowy outline of a huge fortress just meters away, the fortress seemed to be shaped in the form of a Robotnik statue just from the waist up and it was intimidating.
Understanding that this was the doctor's base of operations on Little Planet and that there was no time to waste, Sonic dashed off across the metallic landscape, plowing through the Badniks guarding the whole area.
Animals and flowers were freed from Moto Bugs, machinery got wrecked and alarms went off, Sonic was doing his part in stirring up chaos that got on Robotnik's nerves and he felt that he was doing a fine job.
Sonic tore through the streets and smashed down the front doors of Robotnik's Fortress Lab, annihilating Badniks in his path along with Robo-Maker machines, tearing through the infrastructure like no tomorrow.
Closing in on the heart of the base, the hedgehog jumped down a ledge and into a large metallic chamber where Robotnik waited in a big new mech with huge arms, a red nose, black eyes and an orange moustache.
"Found you again, Eggman!" Sonic remarked.
"It's Robotnik..." Robotnik muttered quietly and then spoke loud enough for all to hear, "Remarkable job on making it this far, hedgehog. But this is the end, I'm going to destroy you and then build my ultimate utopia!"
"Love to see ya try, but it ain't happenin', Robuttnik!"
Robotnik closed down the hatch over the pilot's seat of the robot and it activated as Sonic got into a battle stance and so began their final climactic battle that would determine Little Planet's fate.
The doctor raised a humongous arm and brought it down, only for Sonic to jump aside and leap onto his arm, running along it and then attacked the head, damaging one of the eyes.
With the damage done, Sonic jumped down as Robotnik fired lasers, attempting to blow up the hedgehog. Evading every laser beam that fired, the speedster jumped to avoid another arm slam and leaped onto the arm.
Sonic ran up the Egg Fever's left arm and attacked the head, damaging its left eye before hitting the nose. Cannons activated and fired on Sonic, trying to blast him to pieces only to get destroyed by the hedgehog.
The robot blindly flailed, trying to launch an attack, but it was hindered by blindness. Robotnik growled with frustration as smoke billowed from the broken robot, indicating that the fight was nearing its end.
Ready to end this, Sonic launched at the Egg Fever and smashed through it with a Homing Attack, bringing down the robot as Robotnik retreated in his Egg Mobile/Egg'O Matic, crying with fury!
Rumbling shook the area and let Sonic know that Metal Madness was self-destructing, the hedgehog was about to make a run for it when Amy suddenly arrived, begging for him to help her get out of here.
Being the noble soul he was, Sonic scooped up the pink hedgehog in his arms and ran at light speed out of the area as Metal Madness crumbled around them, breaking apart as debris fell everywhere.
Sonic ran out of the crumbling base and jumped down a collapsing piece of ground, leading to him and Amy landing back on the surface of their world just as the chains broke and the ball surrounding Little Planet vanished.
Both hedgehogs watched as Little Planet flew up into the sky and slowly vanished, leaving scattering confetti that caused plant life to grow around the lake nearby. Sonic even felt the Time Stones he collected vanish.
He set down Amy, who gave him another kiss on the cheek, and his eyes widened when the pink hedgehog pulled him into a big kiss that was short and sweet. Sonic hugged Amy and she hugged him back.
"Uh, you ok?" The hedgehog asked sheepishly, making sure that his number one fan was fine. Amy nodded and thanked him again, Sonic smiled with relief and ran off to take care of any leftover business with Robotnik.
The spikey hedgehog found the doctor sitting around a broken hover device, grumbling over his latest defeat. Sonic was greatly surprised when Robotnik pulled out a gemstone out of his pocket: Another Time Stone, an orange one.
Just before the madman could try to use the Orange Stone, Sonic ran up, punched him and grabbed the Time Stone from his hand. "NO!" Robotnik yelled angrily, jumping up and down, throwing a tantrum.
Sonic smiled as the Time Stone vanished, marking the end of another adventure and another crazy battle with a mad scientist.
