It's been 4 years since her mother was murdered and the case was closed. 4 years in which Kate thought she lost both her parents, 4 years in which she was drowning in her mother's case, 4 years in which she wanted to help her father to end his alcoholism. Since she finished the academy the only thing she was doing was to look into her mother's case, maybe she or the detectives responsible with the case missed something, and coming home to her alcoholic father. Kate Beckett was tired of this kind of life, she wanted something more.

She passed the detective test, but the position wasn't available until detective John Samuels retires so she had to wait a couple more months. Captain Roy Montgomery was the person who told her about this position and of course she accepted. He saw officer Beckett into the archives looking into Johanna Beckett cold case and promised himself that's he'll keep an eye on young Beckett. After a couple of months, Roy took Kate under his wing, trained her, talked to her and convinced her that her father can't cure his addiction on his own. That was the moment when Kate gave Jim Beckett an ultimatum: it's his daughter or his alcohol. Jim started with baby steps, and not once he came home to drawn his sadness into a bottle of whiskey. When he woke up the next day throw all the bottles away and promised he'll be the father Kate deserves, the father he wasn't in the last years. Now, he's sober for 18 months and the coincidence was that Katie's birthday will be soon so he wanted to do something special with his little girl and he took his phone.

"Hello? Katie? Can I talk to you? " Jim asked I little uncertain. He thought his daughter was working and didn't want to disturb her.

"Hi dad, yes. How are you? " Kate was worried, beacuse Jim sounded a little distracted. What if her father was drinking again? Could this be the motive for which he wanted to talk?

"I'm good, great now that I speak with my amazing daughter. " Kate was relieved to hear this, maybe she jumped to early to conclusions.

"Look Katie, I want to do something special with you. Are you available this weekend? I was thinking of Coney Island, but if you're working we can... "

"Yeah dad, I'm available. I have a few days off. " she interrupted his rambling and started to laugh. Jim didn't realised he was holding his breath until this moment. He was happy that his Katie could spend some time with him. He asked her about her job, told her everything that happened at his law firm and hung up the phone after Kate told him she really need to clean up her apartment. After the phone discussion she had with her father, Kate was really happy. Jim was out of his rabbit hole, now it was Kate's turn to open her eyes and get out of it as well, and spending time with her father would help her to see the joys of the world.

But what if her dad won't like the idea she's planing? What if he would judge her? What if her coworkers would judge her? What if Montgomery won't agree with it, what she'll do after? These questions were in Kate's mind since she saw that flyer and decided to try for it.

A month ago, Kate was taking a walk in Douane Park and after some time she stopped on a bench. At first she didn't saw it, but then the flyer caught her attention immediately. It was an Alliance for Children Adoption New York flyer. On the day she was looking for answers to what to do next? It can't be a coincidence. So she took a closer look, but for her it seems like the Universe already took a decision and who was she to ignore it?

The next day she made a call to the New Jersey agency for more information, to see if she can put the papers for adoption even if she's single. She met all the requirements, now she needed to find a lawyer. Kate knew the perfect lawyer for her action, but how can she tell him? It looks like the opportunity arose, but she was really nervous. If he said no she needed to wait a few more days to find a lawywer in order to apply for adoption. Perfect, now she won't sleep until she asks her dad if he will be her lawyer for this situation.

To her surprise, the days went by so quickly. She thought she spoke to her dad yesterday, and now she has to meet him in an hour to go to Coney Island. She was putting the finishing touches to her make up when her dad called her he's out front. Great, now she is even more nervous.

Coney Island was 30 minutes away from Kate's apartment, but for the detective it seems like the trip took hours. She was so quiet for the whole trip. Jim thought that someting is up to his Katie mind, but how can he aproach the subject? They got out of the car and were slowly walking to the beach, What was with this akward silence? For God's sake, it was her dad, the person who told her he will support every decision she's going to take, just to see her happy, and out of her own rabbit hole, so why it was so hard to open the conversation?

„What's on your mind, Katie? And don't try to tell me it's nothing, remember I can see the truth.", Jim was already fed up with the akward silence that fell over them and tried to make a joke.

Kate was so glad that her dad decided to open the conversation, but she was still nervous. How can you tell your dad you want to adopt a child? Are there any books about it?

„I want to adopt a kid, and I want you to be my lawyer." Kate blurted out, avoiding her father's eyes and playing with her cold hands.

To say Jim was surprised is an understatement, but the next second he started to smile, and got something out of his pocket.

„This is the best time to give you your birthday gift. Happy birthday, my little Katie!"

Kate was confused. She told her dad about her plan and he decides to give her a gift?! Something was odd here, so she opened the envelope Jim handed her.

„Papers? For what? What is this, dad?"

„Please, go ahead and read them."

She did as she was told and a few moments later she had the surprise of her life. How can her dad came with the same idea Kate came?

„But dad, how? How did you know?", she was speechless and crying?!

„I didn't. I saw this flyer at the firm and thought about what you said a couple of months ago, that you want something more, and decided to tell you this idea. But you beat me with a few minutes. So I take your reaction as a YES. And to answer your question, I'll be happy to be your lawyer. I can make this my last case."

„That's definitely a yes dad, and thank you so, so much" Kate said while hugging her father.

„Wait, your last case? You want to retire? Why and what would you do?"

„Well, it's about time. I'm not so young anymore and I can't keep up with the increased number of cases. I'm thinking about teaching law at NYU. I have a friend there and I already told him to ask if there is any free position. And look at the bright sided: if and when you're going to have a child, adopted or not, you will have a babysitter for free."

Kate was laughing now. „Ok dad, if that is what you want to do. I am going to support you no matter what, even if you get tired of babysitting."

After that, they just walked along the shore, telling stories about when Kate was a little girl. That made Kate think about her future.

„What if I'm not going to be the mother this child deserves?"

„Don't go there, Katie. You didn't event applied for adoption and you're already worried about the child's future. I can assure you you're going to be the best mother just by being so worried. I will help you with everything. Hell, even your mother is going to help you, and you know that."

„I know, thanks dad. It means a lot to me that you're going to do this. I can't find the right words to thank you enough. I just want you to be proud of me."

„Oh Katie, I already am. I thought you knew. It seems I didn't do a great job with showing you how proud I am. And I am sure your mom is proud too. Wherever she is, she's proud."

They continued their walk for another hour and then decided to go home for an early dinner. On the way home Kate thought about her fears for before her meeting with her dad. Why was she affraid? She can't even remember.

Because it was weekend she had to wait a couple of days to apply for adoption, but now she was impatient, not nervous. She started to imagine how her future baby would look like, if is going to be a girl or a boy. Jim was watching her and somehow he knew exactly what Kate was thinking about. These thoughts crossed his mind when he found out Johanna is pregnant. He decided to let her be, to think about her future. He just knew his little girl is not so little anymore and she is ready to be a mother.
