CHAPTER 2
Richard Castle was a happy man. He was doing what he liked and he was paid for it. He has a supportive mother, and a more supportive girlfriend. He couldn't have imagined his life better. In a few words, he was a rising star. The only thing that was going to complete his life was a child and he hoped Meredith was thinking at the same thing, but he really need to talk to her about this subject.
His latest book , `Storm Fall`, was published a few days ago and it was already on top ten of The New York Time best seller list. Rick was preparing himself for the party that Black Pawn was throwing for him when he got a text from Meredith. He knew she texted him to let him know she's ready and waiting for him. What he read left him with tears in his eyes.
`I am very sorry Richard, but I can't continue with this relationship.` Why? He couldn't figure it out. He thought everything was fine between them, but now it seems it was only for him. He tried to call her but she turned her phone off. How Meredith could do this? And before his releasing party?! And now he was supposed to go there, smile to everyone when his heart is broken in a thousand pieces. Maybe he could cancel it? No, Ginna would kill him. Instead, he got out of his bedroom and went straight to where his mother had all the alcohool. Martha was in the living room when Richard got out of his bedroom. He seem so upset, but what it was about?
„Richard? What are you doing? You're trying to get drunk before you leave for the party?", Martha asked around the third shot. He was startled about his mother presence. He walked past her and didn't even saw her there, he was really upset.
„Mother? When did you arrived?" He put the glass down. He didn't want to get drunk, just to help his aching heart. It didn't help. On contrary, it made it worse.
„Son, what happended? Why are you so upset?"
„Meredith. Meredith happened. She just broke up with me over a text, mom."
He called her 'mom', just like he did when he was a little boy. It broke Martha's heart to see her son like this again. She hoped that he will find the perfect woman for him after the whole Kyra thing. Yes, she liked Kyra, but what she did to Richard was unforgivable. And now Meredith did the same thing? She didn't liked her, ever. She was an actress just like Martha, and the actors supports each other but Martha couldn't support that woman. She knew Meredith was with Richard because of his money and the people he knew. She just took advantage of her son. If only Martha could made her son saw that before. She wondered how that heart of his could take another blow.
„Oh Richard." How dared Meredith do this to her son?
„I tried to call her, to see what I did wrong, but she turned her phone off. I am supposed to smile today, right? How Mother? Please tell me, `cause I can't figure it out."
He was now in Martha's embrace, the only place he always felt safe.
„I was going to propose today, you know? After the party I was going to take her for a walk and then ask her to marry me."
Martha hugged her son tighter. "What you did wrong was to love her too much. You gave her every piece of yourself, you loved her with your every fiber from the start. That is the only thing you did wrong. Sometimes we have to lose something to appreciate the things we had before. And now you have to appreciate your fans, and the life you build up by yourself."
„I didn't built it by myself, you helped me. You were always there for me."
„I just encoureged you. I did nothing more."
„You're so wrong, Mother. You inspired me. I am the man I am today only because of you. You were and are my life model."
This brought tears of joy to Martha's eyes. She knew she helped Richard, that's what every mother does for her child, but she didn't knew it was a huge help until now.
The mother-son duo was now a crying mess. One of them cried tears of joy while the other was mourning his love.
„Mother, I will ever find the perfect girl for myself?" Rick asked after a few minutes.
„Of course you will find it. Your soulmate is out there asking the same question and trying to find you, I am sure of it."
„How can you be so sure?"
„Because I asked myself the same question as you. That's when I found your dad. And even if it was a one night stand I am pretty sure he is my soulmate."
„And what about Chet? You said you love him. How can you love another person who is not your soulmate?"
„I love him with my whole heart. He may not be my soulmate, but he helped me to see the joy of the world, to see the magic every day holds. Meredith an Kyra already showed you the everyday joy, now you have to find that girl who will show you the magic. Or maybe she will find you."
„Thank you Mother!"
„For what?"
„For making me see there is no ending in Meredith's leaving."
„It is her loss, not yours, even if for you right now it seems it is yours." And with that, the duo left the loft for the party.
Meredith was just across the street from Rick's loft, watching as her former lover was leaving for his party. She couldn't be with him right now. She loved him, but that was in the past. Richard wanted a family while Meredith was more focused on her career. She couldn't commit to this kind of life Richard wanted, even if he didn't say anything to her yet. She wanted to go to parties, not changing diapers every few hours.
She started a relationship with Richard Castle because he loved to go to parties, loved to be in the spotlight. But after the first year of relationship he changed. He didn't want to go out as much as in their first months, and the parties were almost non-existent. He was just like an old man, staying home, cooking, writing, and watching TV. Meredith endured this for 2 and a half years, but the love for Richard was gone after the first year. She stayed with him because he had money and connections. And the sex life was something she never imagined before. Because of his connections she wanted to be an LA actress, not a Broadway one, like Martha, who wasn't recognized by almost anyone. She wanted the paparazzi, interviews, lots of fans, not a mediocre life. She wanted to be known by something what she did, not by being Richard Castle's girlfriend.
A couple of months ago she met Derek Riggs, a famous Hollywood producer and he promised her a part in his new movie, so of course she accepted. It wasn't anything between the two of them, because even if she didn't loved Richard, she just couldn't cheat on him. So, she decided to be a free woman and broke up with Richard. Maybe Derek could give her the fame she so wanted.
Rick never did drugs but right now he felt like a drug addict. He had to smile to every person he met, to talk with some of them, when the only thing he wanted to do was to be at home, alone, looking at photos of Meredith and himself. He just couldn't find the answer to why she left. He thought about going somewhere, anywhere to forget about her, but where?
The next day he called his real estate agent to find him something, maybe on the beach, but close to New York. He wanted to go away a few days but still be around if his mother needed him. So, three hours later James called him with an offer to put for a house in the Hamptons. Rick didn't care about the price of the house, he knew he had the money so he told James to offer even more to be sure the house would be his, since he did like the house and the view.
And here he is, almost a week after Meredith left him, looking how every wave hit the shore. If only his pain could be washed over like the waves washed the sand. He wasn't the type to wash his sorrow with alcohol. Maybe buying this house was a good thing. He almost felt better by just watching the ocean. He took a pause from writing; he wasn't in the mood to do this and felt like his inspiration disappeared too with Meredith. Not once he tried to call her, only to hear the same thing: "This number is no longer available."
Maybe it was for the best, he could focus on himself and his eccentric mother, like he did when he started college, or like Martha did when she was a young single mother with the most beautiful boy.
